Good morning Gazzuz.

Do you have any experience with Mitsubishi GDI engines, specifically the 4G93.

A friend owns one that seems to have a failed high pressure pump( fuel pressure as obtained from a diagnostic tool drops from 4.7mpa to 0 and engine stalls whenever you rapidly rev the engine).

Thanks.

Many thanks sir.
Can you recommend a competent technician to handle the repair ?
makavele:

Sh!t happens and electronics can just go kaboom for no good reason.
But you need to give it to a seasoned electrician , , ,
Do not attempt to change the Fets on your own . . because in most causes;
the shorted Fets creates a short inside the gates . . and this damages
the circuitry that drives the gates . . .
Change the all mosfets and connect the inverter;
and you will hear another kaboom ; back to square one.

N.B.: Be careful when you handle circuit boards that contain capacitors; they can store power high enough
to deliver a fatal electric shock; even when they are powered off (especially when the unit was just disconnected; without discharging
the capacitors)
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by dejidotun2000(m): 3:37pm On Dec 18, 2017
The inverter was not being backfed. It was installed about 3 years ago and no modifications have been made to the wiring/connection since then.
Braaad:
Could you post a connection diagram,
that would help to determine if you were mistakenly back feeding the inverter.

The inverter being the only load on generator is not the cause of mos tube damage.

Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by dejidotun2000(m): 9:00am On Dec 18, 2017
Good morning house.

A friend put on his 5kva generator and switched on the change-over switch with the inverter being the only load on the generator.
He heard spectacular explosions and smoke from the inverter.
About 6 FETs are obviously damaged, the rest are also shorted.

Did the damage have anything to do with the fact that the inverter was the only load on the generator ?

Will replacing all the FETs bring the inverter back to life/Could any other components have been damaged besides the FETs ?

Thanks everyone.

Data sheets give you values other than at STC.

makavele:

Cos those are factory-based under STC which don't apply to real life . . .
Take for example, a battery spec sheet might tell you to charge your battery to 14.1V for optimum performance
And you might be living where you do not have enough sun-hours to float your battery.
What do you do? Increase bulk charge to say, 14.6 and let it smoke . . .
** and for those who might want to argue, it's called "max smoke" in the solar world & perfectly safe***
By the time the sun goes down; you would be closer to 100% SOC
If you seem to be smoking too much, reduce to 14.4 and try again . .
no battery spec sheet will tell you this.
so forget what the spec sheets say, they are theoritical and meant as guides
throw it away, and face real conditions applicable to you and you only.

I own a 1kva and a 3kva ipowerplus(Axpert) inverter. Both have tripped the Dc input breaker at least twice without any damage.

NiyiOmoIyunade:
I remember Oga Chris mentioned some Axpert inverters he had in production which failed when the end-users flipped the battery breaker while the inverter was 'inverting'.

I also had a Zinox (similar to Axpert) which died once after the breaker tripped due to an overload condition - it also had an internal component failure at the exact same moment so no way to know if the battery breaker tripping caused the internal component failure or if the internal short was what tripped the battery breaker grin

Thanks. That was a very helpful answer. Thanks to Kiekie too.
NiyiOmoIyunade:
All lead acid batteries benefit from desulfation because inherent to their design, they will always suffer from positive grid/plate corrosion and sulfation during the discharge and recharge process - in fact the very act of recharging a depleted lead acid battey implies desulfation.

The question then is how to do it right for an AGM/SMF battery since you cannot afford an overcharge (controlled or otherwise) leading to gassing and the battery drying up inside - for flooded/wet-cell batteries you would have simply replaced any lost fluids with distilled water after your equalization/controlled overcharge.

First things first you want to make sure your batteries get a full charge daily/regularly and are never left depleted for more than a week to get maximum mileage from them.

To desulfate/recover an AGM/SMF battery, first eliminate the misconception that you can do it with the battery bank hooked up in series e.g 24v,36v,48v and so on - each individual 12v battery (rarely you could have 6v AGM/SMF batteries in this part of the world) must be isolated and recharged to full charge individually > then load tested to ascertain capacity and > then recharged again to full charge > then you select batteries with similar capacity and hook them back up in series and connect to your inverter again and enjoy renewed performance

You could take a shortcut and buy a 12v inverter - e.g IcellPower (JUO) or Mustpower (Zeestone/KieKie) or any solid brand of your choice and hookup your batteries in parallel and charge fully - this method ensures you still get inverter backup/uniterrupted service while you are performing the full charge/desulfation process - you will need access to uninterrupted power during the period till you complete the charge cycle - yet, the best method is to isolate each individual battery and give it the treatment - full charge - load test - full recharge - group similar capacity batteries and put them back in service.

There is one last method where you can keep your series configuration and clap on a 12v charger to each individual battery and charge fully turn by turn given you have uninterrupted access to power to complete the charging process - needless to say you need to know what you are doing in this scenario and I will not dwell on it further.

To safely equalize/desulfate AGM/SMFs, you will need a smart charger capable of cutting off at 14.8volts (maximum safe upper limit) or lower as per manufacturer specs for the battery - anything over 14.8v per 12v battery you will likely gas the battery with no easy way to replace lost fluids in the AGM/SMF battery. I use a cheapo chinese charger called 'Suoer' for this purpose - it sells under 20k and cuts off reliably at 14.8volts.

You can also buy a battery desulfator e.g PowerPulse or BLS (Battery Life Saver) to assist in keeping your batteries healthy. I warrant to you though that in 8 years of using these desulfator devices I AM STILL UNDECIDED if they actually work!!! Sometimes they seem to perform a miracle and sometimes they appear useless - I know though that I will not buy any new ones apart from the ones I already have.

All in all, a very long reply to a very short question - I hope it is of help grin

About injector nozzle cleaning...... Do you know know anyone who does it professionally (ultrasonic cleaning and flow testing)

GAZZUZZ:

It is complicated, The database is quite clumsy.

If you want to re-reister an already registered vehicle, the program will notify you of a conflict of VIN, you cvan search by reg number and get full info, but searching Via vin (option exists) never seems to work.

Is it possible to ascertain the registration status and details of a car in Nigeria using the chassis number
saintjoel:

Never assume all is well when buying a Nigerian used car.

OYO may be your case if you don’t sight and verify all the vehicle documents before you part with your money..

Some have fallen victim.. and the car they bought ended up being stolen or smuggled vehicles. To prevent future occurrence, I have come up with this list that will prevent you from buying an undocumented vehicle..

These are the 8 Documents you should ask for when buying a Nigerian used car:

1. Custom documents fully stamped and check whether all things correspond like name and model of car, VIN and all payments were made. Mostly like 6 or more papers.. could be photocopy if multiple cars were cleared by one dealer. But make sure it is a clear crisp document not faded crap.. and don’t take the nobody will ask you for customer paper crap . It could spell doom or stolen vehicle.

2. CMR (Computerized Motor Registration) original copy

3. Current insurance (original copy)

4. Vehicle licence (original copy)

5. Road worthiness certificate (original copy)

6. Plate number allocation (original copy)

7. Original proof of ownership fully stamped

8. You will collect two printed and signed documents:
a. Change of ownership document
b. Receipt of purchase from previous owner

There are some other documents you may need like
a. Tinted permit doc
b. police report/doc of change of ownership/plate number/engine number/ chassis number (which we call vin)

Make sure you see the change of ownership letter given to the buyer duly signed when he first bought it as Nigerian used.. except the car was bought as tokunbo then you may not need this.

Once the car doesn’t have custom doc.. except it’s a beetle and the documents have expired years ago, I suggest you stay away from such ride.

If you have any further questions, don’t forget to drop it
Car Talk / Re: Read This Before You Buy Another Used Car by dejidotun2000(m): 5:24am On Nov 15, 2017
Are you absolutely sure that the details of a pre-registered car will come up if one tries to re-register it?

I am in a particularly difficult situation. I mistakenly registered my car with the custom papers of another car (dealer had two similar cars and mistakenly gave me the wrong paper initially) . Unfortunately I didn't know that MVAA will require the custom paper of the other car in order to correct mine.

TLDR:I need to contact the owner of the other car

chinjo:
This only happen when car owners prefer to patronize touts when registering a vehicle. Every genuine registered vehicle can not be re-registered except their is evidence of purchase and valid police clearance certificate. In the process of registering a vehicle, as soon as you imputes the chassis number into the computer, the name of the previous owner appears with all his details including his phone number. A call is then placed to that phone number to confirm if the car was sold or stollen before proceeding with the registration process. A lot of cars have been recovered in this process. That is why those that have clean cars with old number plates should try and get the new number plate because no data is available on the FRSC website for old number plates. All are encouraged to visit the FRSC NVIS desk officer at the state board of internal revenue of each state for the registration of their vehicles.
