CrimeTwo Nigerian Women Battle In Ireland Court Over Threat To Life by Delightikechi(op): 11:48am On Aug 14, 2019
The Irish police force, the gardai and security staff had to spring into action when a violent fracas broke out between up to 20 people in the Four Courts when it is claimed the defendant in a defamation action was attacked and injured.

The individuals involved had attended an action brought by a London-based Nigerian businesswoman, Rosala Uvbi Mku-Atu, who claims she has been defamed and threatened in social media posts by Ireland-based Ester Esabod Aboderin.

Shortly before the case was due to be heard by Ms Justice Leonie Reynolds, a violent fracas, involving up to 20 individuals, broke out in the area between the Four Courts Round Hall and the Supreme Court.

Court staff had to call on gardaí to help them restore order. A garda, supported by the Court Services' own staff, then escorted several people out of the Four Courts.

The individuals had earlier been in Court 3, where the case was due to be mentioned. They were asked to leave by Judge Reynolds after some of them became loud and agitated.

When the case was recalled, Rory Kennedy, Bl for Ester Esabod Aboderin, told the judge that his client had been "seriously assaulted" by unknown parties and had suffered injuries including "cuts and bruises" to her face and body.

A complaint has been made to the gardai about the assault, counsel said.

In reply, Patrick O'Brien Bl for Ms Uvbi Mku-Atu, who was not in court, said his client had "no knowledge" about the people who were involved in the incident and "did not condone" what had occurred.

In July, the plaintiff secured a temporary High Court order requiring the defendant to remove threatening and defamatory comments she had allegedly posted on social media.

The judge also made orders under Section 33 of the 2009 Defamation Act which prohibits the reporting of the allegedly defamatory comments.
The judge, who noted that the gardaí were investigating the incident that took place outside the court, agreed to adjourn the case, with the orders remaining in place to October.

The judge heard that the defendant has removed the comments complained of from social media that was under her control.
There were concerns about posts on platforms not under the defendant's control, but steps were being taken to address that issue, the court heard.

The court heard that the plaintiff, who lives in London due to ill health, is involved in property development, electricity-distribution businesses, and is also involved in philanthropy.

She claims that since May the defendant, who she does not know and has never met, has published numerous false, malicious, harmful, threatening and untruthful comments about her.

The comments relate to the plaintiff's businesses, her philanthropy, and her personal reputation. Other comments, it is claimed, include threats to kill Ms Uvbi Mku-Atu and expressing a wish for her death in unpleasant ways.

The comments are contained in videos posted on Facebook and YouTube. It is claimed they reached a significant audience, have had thousands of views and have been shared.

Some of the posts call on Ms Esabod Aboderin's online supporters to attack Ms Uvbi Mku-Atu, Irish Independent newspaper reports.

FoodFood Crisis Hits Zimbabwe With Over 5 Million People In Need Of Aid by Delightikechi(op): 3:48am On Aug 08, 2019
Dib.com.ng

Zimbabwe has been hit by a food crisis with more than five million people in dire need of food aid.

The United Nations has said that most of those without food are close to starvation.

The World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday launched a $331m appeal to help the country.

Zimbabwe is currently battling the effects of drought, a cyclone, and an economic crisis.

David Beasley, head of the WFP has said that many people are “in crisis emergency mode… marching towards starvation”.

Mr. Beasley said at the launch that “We are talking about people who truly are marching towards starvation if we are not here to help them,” referring to a figure of about 2.5 million people.

“We are facing a drought unlike any that we have seen in a long time,” he adds.

Washington has said it would provide an additional $45 million in response to the social challenges.

EU delegation intends providing $11 million while the UK is providing £7.9 million.

In April this year, Zimbabwe’s government said it needed millions of dollars to rebuild parts of the country.

Zimbabwe was one of the countries affected by the deadly Cyclone Idai at the time.

The country appealed for some $613 million in aid from local and foreign donors as it struggles to provide food for citizens following a severe drought.

The United Nations said the El Nino-induced drought destroyed many crops across Zimbabwe.

The government months ago launched an appeal with the ministry of information saying it requires $300 million in aid for food.

But the UN says it needs more funds to support Zimbabwe and it’s a current food crisis.

PoliticsPresident Buhari Has Ruined Nigeria - Atiku Abubakar by Delightikechi(op): 10:30pm On Aug 04, 2019
Dib.com.ng

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday said President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration had ruined Nigeria.

In a statement by his media adviser, Mr. Paul Ibe, Atiku said Nigerians in the past four years lived in multi-dimensional poverty.

He said the United Nations reawakened Nigerians to the perceived reality of how poorly the Buhari-led administration had managed the nation’s economy with a damning verdict that 98 million Nigerians live in multi-dimensional poverty.

He said it was not surprising that Buhari and his handlers, didn’t make any comment about the scary statistics coming from the United Nations Development Programme.

The statement read, “Perhaps, one reason why they didn’t want to comment on the report is that it is factual – Nigerians in the past four years indeed live in multi-dimensional poverty.

“Quite regrettably too, the administration has been groping in the dark since 2015, the reason majority of Nigerians decided not to reward their failures during the February 23 presidential poll consequently leading to the heist that characterized the conduct of that poll.”

He added, “The other plausible reason why they didn’t deem it fit to respond to the report is that Atiku had yet to make a remark on the report.

“If the only reason why the Buhari-led administration will react to the affliction it has brought on Nigerians is for Atiku to call the nation’s attention to how bad things have gone in the country under the leadership of Buhari, Atiku will more than always, be ready to stand and speak up for the millions of countrymen and women who have become victims of his (Buhari’s) misrule and grand cluelessness.”

Atiku stated that a Commander-in-Chief who fits the bill will not be unconcerned by reports from a reputable media organization on the welfare and well-being of troops at the frontline of combat.

He stated that like the case of other perceived dysfunctional aspects of the system, Buhari’s administration preferred to live in denial, and allegedly relying on propaganda, which the former vice president described as the machine that they know how to operate without a glitch.

He said he had respect for the practical purpose of the judiciary as an arm of government saddled with the responsibility of dispensing justice.

According to him, for the Buhari-led administration to allegedly call out the judiciary on how they might choose to do their job is not only emotional blackmail to the bench, but is also very disrespectful to the integrity of the honorable justices of the court of law.

Attempts to get reactions of Presidential spokespersons through the telephone were not successful as of last night.

PoliticsTribunal Sacks Ondo PDP Reps Member - Details by Delightikechi(op): 8:11am On Aug 02, 2019
Dib.com.ng

It was heartbreaking for Ikengboju Gboluga, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives member as the Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Akure, Ondo State Capital, nullified his election on Thursday.

Gboluga is representing Okitipupa/Irele constituency in the House of Reps.

The court nullified his election forswearing his allegiance to the United Kingdom (UK), having acquired the citizenship of the country.

he court emphasized that he was not eligible to contest for the Feb. 23, National Assembly election for his allegiance with the UK.

The three-man panel headed by Justice Nuhu Adi also declared Albert Akintoye of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the election and ordered the electoral commission to issue Certificate of Return to Akintoye after withdrawing same from Gboluga.

The petitioner wanted the tribunal to declare him the winner of the election on the ground that the first respondent, Gboluga Ikengboju was not validly elected by a majority of lawful votes cast.

Besides, he said Gboluga was not eligible to stand for the election having sworn to an oath of allegiance to the United Kingdom as enunciated by Section 66 sub-section one of the 1999 constitutions.

The tribunal chairman, Justice Nuhu Adi, said evidence of 15 witnesses called by the petitioner, including himself were not sufficient to prove that the grounds of noncompliance with the electoral laws substantially affected the conduct and outcome of the election
Justice Adi also said Ikengboju’s counsel did not oppose the evidence tendered by the petitioner that the PDP lawmaker swore to an oath of allegiance to the UK.

He said in line with extant laws, the tribunal was convinced that Ikengboju was not eligible to run for the election and therefore, nullified his victory
He, therefore, ordered INEC to issue the petitioner a certificate of return as the first runner up since the votes credited to Ikengboju had been a waste.

Akintoye expressed gratitude to the Ondo Elections Petition tribunal for upholding his prayers to be declared the winner of the February 2019 house of representatives election.

He said his victory showed rule of law at work and expressed readiness for further actions on the judgment by the respondents.

His counsel, Adamson Adeboro, said the tribunal was right to have upheld their arguments that Ikengboju was not eligible to contest having admitted to having sworn oath of allegiance to the United Kingdom.

However, counsel to Ikengboju, Olumide Ogunje, said his client would appeal the judgment.
The state chairman of APC in the state, Ade Adetimehin, lauded the tribunal’s judgment and hailed the resilience of Akintoye to reclaim his mandate in court.

He said the victory has swelled the ranks of the APC, particularly in the national assembly.

Adetimehin appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately issue a certificate of return to Akintoye as directed by the tribunal.

PoliticsYour Plans To Frame Atiku Will Fail - PDP Tells Buhari by Delightikechi(op): 11:31pm On Jul 31, 2019
The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that alleged plans by President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to frame former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will fail, The Nation reports

The APC had, in a statement on Tuesday, accused Atiku of committing felony through his various statements on topical national and international issues.

In a statement Wednesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the main opposition party said comments so far made by Atiku were patriotic and within his constitutional right and freedom of speech.

According to the party, by being the presidential candidate of the PDP in the February 23 elections, Atiku and his party command the followership and solidarity of overwhelming majority of Nigerians.

“As a responsible political party, we boldly state that none of the statements made by our presidential candidate falls within the realm of a felony in any way whatsoever.

“However, intelligence available to the PDP largely posits that the threats against Atiku Abubakar emanated from certain persons around the Buhari Presidency who are jittery that President Muhammadu Buhari’s defense is collapsing at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, for which they have become desperate to use underhand methods to stop Atiku Abubakar.

“The PDP invites Nigerians to note that the renewed allegations against Atiku Abubakar came after a witness told the court, as has been publicly reported, that the Army never required any enlisted officer to submit his WAEC certificate, in total contradiction to claims that Mr. President’s certificates were in the custody of the Army.

“Our party counsels the APC to rather get ready for justice instead of seeking ways to frame Atiku Abubakar on flimsy and unconstitutional grounds.

“Moreover, the APC is reminded that while the PDP was in power, it never gagged the APC and its leaders, including President Buhari, from exercising their freedom of speech and freedom after the speech, in line with our laws”, the PDP said.

The party recalled that Buhari issued over 160 statements while he was in the opposition, including inflammatory remarks like the one that called on his supporters to take their fate in their own hands.

The PDP added, “It is instructive to note that none of the PDP administrations threatened General Buhari over such comments.

“Furthermore, it is quite disturbing that the APC is attacking Atiku Abubakar for commending British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, for appointing 39-year-old Nigerian, Kemi Badenoch, as a minister in his cabinet.

“Contrary to President Buhari’s projection to the world that Nigerian youths are lazy and should not be given an active role in governance in our country, other nations are finding accommodation for our youths. Atiku Abubakar cannot but commend such world leaders, no matter whose ox is gored.

“It is also instructive to note that the APC has further shown its disdain for the Nigerian youth as being demonstrated by President Buhari, whose cabinet has no place for our youths.

“Instead of attacking Atiku Abubakar for standing for our energetic and focused young men and women, Nigerians expect that APC will accept its failures and advise President Buhari against total disregard for young Nigerians.

“Furthermore, the PDP notes the reference by APC to President Buhari as a ‘sitting’ President. Our party, however, states that what Nigeria needs at a time like this is a working President, not a President that sits down while our country becomes the world headquarters of poverty; not a President that relaxes in an arm-chair while insecurity festers and our economy continues to nosedive to the extent that Ghana has overtaken our nation as the number one recipient of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in West Africa.

“This is why the PDP stands with Nigerians in their determination to retrieve Atiku Abubakar’s stolen mandate at the tribunal and no amount of threats by the APC can detract from this resolve."

PoliticsNigerian Youths Take Things For Granted - President Buhari by Delightikechi(op): 9:28am On Jul 31, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari says he has no plan to groom a successor for the 2023 presidential election and accused Nigerian youths of taking things for granted.

The president stated this while reacting to one of the requests made by the members of progressives in academics, who visited him at the State House, Abuja on Tuesday.

The spokesperson for the group, Dr. Bolariwa Bolaji, had earlier urged the president to groom a successor, who will take over in 2023.
Bolaji said: “We are delighted having you and in another four years you would want to go and rest – then who takes over from you? We are suggesting that you bring vibrant youths among people who have shown interest, bring them in so that you start saddling them with responsibilities and you will be watching over these next four years so that when you want to leave the circle, you would have vibrant youths to hand over to.

“This is one of the ways the gains of this government can be made to be continues – so that there will be continuity in what you are doing.’’
However, President Buhari said he would rather stay away from identifying anybody as his successor so as not to create a problem for such a person.

The president said: “To me, this is very funny. I think if I identify anybody I’d create more problems for him or for her.

“So, I’d rather keep my mouth shut. Let those who would want to be president try as much as I did. And I believe that those who are interested know that I tried three times.

“And the first time, I thank God and technology, PVC. Before they just went on the television and they read the results. They said anybody who disagreed should go to court.

“And most of my supporters are looking for the next day’s meal. They don’t have money to give to lawyers. So I said, 'God dey'. So, the first time God and technology came along, PVC, they couldn’t rig the election, so I won."

The president added, "I tried to work hard but I think you have a lot more to do you as intellectuals so that you correctly document Nigeria’s political development. It’s very important for the next generation.

“A lot of our young chaps are taking things for granted. Imagine contesting election three times ending up in Supreme Court three times. It needs a lot of conviction you know, and hard work.

“But people take success for granted. They say, 'Ah, he’s the president'. They think I just closed my eyes and I got it?"

SportsFootballer "Neymar" Rape Allegation Dropped Due To Lack Of Evidence by Delightikechi(op): 7:51am On Jul 30, 2019
Dib.com.ng

Police investigating a rape allegation against Paris Saint-Germain footballer Neymar have dropped the case because of a lack of evidence.

The 27-year-old striker, Neymar was accused by Najila Trindade, a Brazilian model of raping her at a hotel in the French capital in May.
But following the report of AFP news agency, police in Sao Paulo have decided to close the case.

Prosecutors will now have 15 days to evaluate the police's findings, and a final decision will be made by a judge.

Neymar has vehemently denied the allegations - and says his relations with Ms Trindade were consensual.

The forward is also being investigated by police in Rio de Janeiro for publishing images of his accuser on social media without her permission, along with WhatsApp messages they exchanged.

On Instagram in June, Neymar had posted a seven-minute video in which he insisted the accusations were a "setup".

At the time, he said: "There was a relationship between a man and a woman between four walls.

CelebritiesNigerian Preacher Arrested In London, Receives £2,500 Payout For Wrongful Arrest by Delightikechi(op): 5:40am On Jul 29, 2019
Dib.com.ng

A Nigerian preacher who was halted from expressing his Christian views and driven four miles away by police has been awarded a £2,500 payout for wrongful arrest, it was reported today by several British media.

Police are however not apologizing for taking him away from the tube station where he was arrested.

Oluwole Ilesanmi, 64, was accused of Islamophobia while he was preaching outside Southgate Tube station in London in February.

He was approached by two officers after a passer-by called police accusing him of hate speech.

Ilesanmi, a former dentist, admits describing Islam as an ‘aberration’ but said he was expressing his point of view as a Christian rather than denigrating Muslims, the Mail on Sunday reports.

A video of his confrontation with police and subsequent arrest has been viewed by over 3 million times online.

In the video, a policeman takes his Bible away. One of the police officers claims Ilesanmi was disturbing the peace, saying: ‘No one wants to hear that. They want you to go away.’

He has driven miles away and then released. The Met said they offered him a lift back.

Scotland Yard has agreed to pay Ilesanmi £2,500 for wrongful arrest and his humiliating and distressing treatment.

A Met spokesman said: “The Met respects and upholds the rights of all individuals to practice freedom of speech, and this includes street preachers of all religions and backgrounds.

“However, if the language someone uses is perceived as being a potential hate crime, it is only right that we investigate.

“In this case, it was deemed appropriate to remove the man from the area.”

On Tuesday, Ilesanmi will hand a petition to the Home Office, signed by 38,000 people, asking for greater protection for street preachers.

Andrea Williams, chief executive of the Christian Legal Centre, is also writing to Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan police chief, raising concerns that officers are too quick to silence preachers.

Australian rugby league player Jarryd Hayne has pleaded not guilty to charges that he raped a woman last year.
Mr. Hayne, 31, is accused of attacking a 26-year-old woman in Newcastle, north of Sydney, last September.
He was arrested in December and charged with aggravated sexual assault and inflicting actual bodily harm - offenses with carrying a maximum 20-year jail term.

SportsFrank Lampard Appointed As Chelsea New Manager by Delightikechi(op): 10:20am On Jul 04, 2019
Dib.com.ng

Chelsea has appointed former midfielder Frank Lampard as their manager on a three-year deal.
Lampard, 41, has left Championship side Derby County to take over at a club where he spent 13 years as a player.
He succeeds Maurizio Sarri, who left Stamford Bridge in June to take charge of Italian champions Juventus.

Lampard led Derby to the Championship play-off final, where they lost to Aston Villa, in his first season as a manager.
The former England international made 648 Chelsea appearances, winning 11 major trophies with them.

He takes over with Chelsea under a transfer embargo after the club was given a two-window transfer ban by the world governing body Fifa - a decision they are appealing against at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

"I am immensely proud to be returning to Chelsea as head coach," said Lampard.
"Everyone knows my love for this club and the history we have shared. However, my sole focus is on the job in hand and preparing for the season ahead.

"I am here to work hard, bring further success to the club and I cannot wait to get started."
The appointment comes nine days after Derby gave Lampard permission to talk to Chelsea and 18 days after Sarri left Stamford Bridge.
Lampard is the 10th full-time manager appointed by Roman Abramovich since he bought the club in 2003.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said Lampard's Championship play-off final appearance with Derby demonstrated that he is "one of the most talented young coaches in the game".

"It gives us great pleasure to welcome Frank back to Chelsea as head coach," she said. "Frank possesses fantastic knowledge and understanding of the club."

Derby assistant manager Jody Morris and first-team coach Chris Jones have also joined Lampard at Stamford Bridge, while former team-mate Petr Cech was appointed as a technical advisor last month.
