Fernando Torres: Former Liverpool, Chelsea & Spain striker to retire.

Spanish World Cup-winning striker Fernando Torres has announced he is to retire from football.


Torres, 35, played at Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, and Chelsea in his 18-year career and is currently at Sagan Tosu in Japan's J1 League.


In 110 games for Spain, he scored the winner in Euro 2008 and was on target in their Euro 2012 final win.


"After 18 exciting years, the time has come to put an end to my football career," he said on social media.


Torres said he will hold a news conference in Tokyo on Sunday to "explain all the details".

His career started with Atletico, before a £20m move to Liverpool in 2007, where he scored 81 goals in 142 games.


In 2011, he was signed by Chelsea for a then British record transfer fee of £50m.


Although he failed to replicate his goalscoring form at Stamford Bridge, he was part of the Blues' Champions League-winning team in 2012.


He also won the FA Cup and scored in their 2-1 win against Benfica in the Europa League final in 2013.


After 45 goals in 172 games at Chelsea and a brief four-month loan spell at AC Milan, he returned to Atletico in late 2014.


He finished on the losing side as Atletico lost the 2016 Champions League final to Real Madrid, but won a second Europa League in 2018 - his final appearance before moving to Japan.


Torres, who is Spain's third highest goalscorer with 38, played in six major tournaments including their 2010 World Cup triumph.

The Special Adviser to the Ondo State Governor on Health, Dr. Jibayo Adeyeye, has disclosed that the state government has accessed $37m out of the $50m World Bank loan for the funding of health projects for the Nigeria State Health Investment Project (NSHIP).

Adeyeye, who disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, the state capital, called to deliberate on how to sustain the benefits of NSHIP facilities which began in 2014 and will end in 2020.

Adeyeye, who said the money was disbursed on Performance-Based Funding (PBF) policy, had benefitted 532 health facilities in the state, expressed optimism that the state would be able to access the balance of the loan and would not pull out of the arrangement.

He noted that the project had impacted positively on health care facilities and delivery in the state and stressed the need to do all that is necessary to sustain the project beyond 2020 when the World Bank pulls out.

He said: “The loan has been spent judiciously renovating the health centers and doing many other things. But the reality is that there must be a way to ensure that we continually have the resources to do what that loan was doing for us.”

Early today there was a violent gun battle between the policemen and armed robbers who attempted to rob a priest today at Hardel Junction, Orji, Owerri.


It was reported that the event happened at the junction which has a police station around, and the police engaged in a gun battle with the robbers and shot one of them dead, others escaped.

A young Nigerian poet has committed suicide hours after he took to Facebook to write a suicide post that no one paid attention to.

The Victim who identified as Chukwuemeka Akachi was suffering depression and spoke about it on a Facebook post hours before he took his life. Sadly, the post barely got any reaction as people thought he was simply seeking attention.

He wrote on Sunday, May 12;

"My mental health has been on life support for a while now. Thanks to those who call. Text. Visit. Speak to me. May we always remember. May we never forget. You may have added a few hours, months or days to my time here. But you know life support is expensive, right? Thanks for trying. Amen."


Then, on Monday, May 13, just before he ended his life, he shared a post titled, "suicide note". In it, he made it clear that he was about to take his life. But very few paid attention to it until he followed through with the suicide.

His suicide note reads:
"Suicide Note.
Forgive me. In case you are the one who found the body, I am really sorry. It had to be someone, you know. I have chosen Jo Nketaih’s poem as my suicide note: “They said you came looking for me. I didn’t drown; I was the water.” Where do atheists go to when they die? lol. Amen."

Five tricycle occupants have lost their lives early hours of Tuesday, April 30th, in Lagos as five passengers in a commercial tricycle and its rider was crushed to death by a speeding train.

It was reported that the incident happened at about 6:45 am at the Iju Ishaga area in Lagos
State.

According to the report reaching us, the tricycle rider was attempting to cross the railway when it got trapped and crushed.

The tricycle was said to be going from Ike Aro to Abule Egba when the tragedy occurred. People allegedly told the driver to stop to allow the train pass, but he didn’t listen.

It was reported that a 100 Level Chemical Engineering student of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has died of an apparent suicide after a long-standing battle with depression.

The victim who was identified as Hikmat Gbadamosi was found dead in her room, yesterday.

According to her bestie, the deceased had been battling a medical condition since birth and the resulting pain sent her into depression.

She is assumed to have consumed two bottles of a poisonous substance on Saturday and was only discovered on Monday after her bestie mobilized classmates to her room to know why she didn’t show up in school for a test they had yesterday.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Sector Commander in Edo, Mr. Anthony Oko, who confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Auchi, said the accident happened at about 11 a.m. at Jattu junction in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.

It was confirmed that five persons died in multiple road accidents on Sunday, 28th April 2019 along Auchi-Okene-Highway.

According to Oko, the five persons died on the spot, while six others sustained various degrees of injury.

“I can confirm to you that five persons have been killed in multiple accidents at Jattu junction along the Auchi-Okene-Highway.

“The dead included three males and two females,” Oko said.

He said the accident occurred as a result of brake failure of Dangote Group of Company vehicle.

It was also reported that the body of the deceased had since been deposited at the mortuary.

Nigeria billionaire businessman, popularly known as Dangote and his Foundation has made an impact on the educational sector in Nigeria by donating 10 blocks of hostels to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State.

According to the report, it has shown that this is the first hostels built in the school in the last 40 years. With the capacity of over 2000 beds, it is also the largest individual intervention in any tertiary institution in Nigeria.

It was reported that this intervention comes at a time when there has been a public outcry over the inadequate infrastructure in Nigeria’s public institutions.
