President Muhammadu Buhari will, today, leave for New Delhi to participate in the third Summit of India-Africa Forum, the official platform for the advancement of mutually beneficial relations between India and African nations. The forum was established in 2008. Buhari, Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi and other participating Heads of State and Government at this year’s summit, are expected to deliberate on issues of common concern to their countries such as climate change and international terrorism. They would also discuss additional measures aimed at boosting joint collaboration to accelerate the pace of socio-economic development in Africa and India as well as further cooperation for the alleviation of poverty, eradication of hunger, disease and illiteracy. This summit follows that of Addis Ababa held in 2011. President Buhari will be accompanied to New Delhi by the Governors of Kano and Delta States; the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd), and the permanent secretaries in the ministries of Defence, Power, Communications Technology, Agriculture, Foreign Affairs and Industry, Trade and Investment. His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in a statement, said the president is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Modi and other senior Indian government officials on Wednesday, ahead of the opening of the summit on Thursday. Buhari will also meet with chief executive officers of Indian companies with existing or prospective interests in Nigeria before returning to Abuja on Friday, October 30. http://nigeriamasterweb.com/paperfrmes.html |
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has condemned the tribunal judgments nullifying the elections of Rivers and Akwa Ibom States Governors, Mr Nyesom Wike and Emmanuel Udom respectively, saying; “the seeming collaboration between the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government and a section of the judiciary is worrisome and portends grave danger to the corporate existence of Nigeria. This is worse than corruption that the president claimed to be fighting.” Governor Fayose said desperation to take over the South South states of Rivers and Akwa Ibom through the backdoor by President Mohammadu Buhari and his APC, in preparation for 2019, using the judiciary may cause anarchy in the country. Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor accused the APC and President Buhari of another grand plot to rig the forthcoming Kogi and Bayelsa States governorship elections, using the newly appointed Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and the Director General of Department of State Security (DSS), Alhaji Lawal Daura. He described the suspension of the appeal court judgment on Senate President Bukola Saraki as “part of the grand plot to use a section of the judiciary to wrestle power from those the Buhari’s Presidency is not comfortable with,” saying the indefinite adjournment by the appeal court smacked of interference from the powers that be. Governor Fayose said; “There were widespread electoral malpractices during the presidential election in the North, with rampant under-aged voting. Yet, Dr Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did not take steps capable of threatening Nigeria’s corporate existence. “Curiously too, in a state like Yobe where it was established that the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Abu Zarma received N15 million bribe from the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the state governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Zakari Deba to influence the State Governorship election, the tribunal did not nullify the election.” The governor called on President Buhari to, in the overall interest of Nigeria, tread cautiously in his bid to consolidate power and prepare ground for his possible re-election bid. Governor Fayose, who reminded the President of the wild, wild west of the mid 60s and the 1983 saga between late Chief Adekunle Ajasin and Chief Akin Omoboriowo, which was orchestrated by the then Federal Government, said “the consequences of the orchestrated plot to prevent the people of Western Region from having the government of their choice through a fair and just election in 1964 should be a watchful example for Nigerians in general and President Buhari in particular.” He appealed to the people of the South South not to be intimidated and discouraged, expressing hope that the appellate court will protect the wish of the people of Rivers and Akwa Ibom States. “Governors Wike and Udom, as well as the teeming supporters of our party, PDP in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states should not be deterred and discouraged as I am sure that by the special grace of God, they will laugh last,” the governor said. http://www.nigeriamasterweb.com/ |
Governors in the Peoples Democratic Party are angry over the verdict of the River State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja, which, on Saturday, sacked Mr. Nyesom Wike as governor of the state. Their anger is further amplified as Wike’s sacking came few days after a similar tribunal ordered a rerun of governorship election in 18 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State, where the electoral victory of Mr. Udom Emmanuel, a member of the party, is also in a contest. The Rivers tribunal on Saturday asked Wike to vacate his office and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to organise a fresh election in the state within 90 days. It was learnt that as a result of the new developments, the governors are to meet and discuss the implications of such judgments to the survival of the former ruling party. The two affected states are oil-rich and are considered to be critical to the funding of the party ahead of its plan to re-strategise for the 2019 elections. It was gathered that the PDP governors’ ‘emergency meeting’ is tentatively scheduled to hold on Friday. Speaking to SUNDAY PUNCH on condition of anonymity, a PDP governor said, “These judgments are targeted at killing the PDP and we have to do something about it. http://www.punchng.com/news/pdp-govs-hold-emergency-meeting-over-wikes-removal/ |
