SportsWorld Cup: France To Test Sweden With Mbappe, Dembele, Olise by Deollaa(op): 10:25am On Jun 30
France will unleash their star-studded attacking trio against Sweden in a crucial Round of 32 clash at the World Cup on Tuesday as the race for a place in the knockout stages intensifies.

The French side heads into the encounter with confidence after impressive performances in the group stage and will look to rely on the attacking quality of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise.

Mbappe has already scored four goals in the tournament, while Dembele, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, delivered a hat-trick during France’s commanding 4–1 victory over Norway in the group stage.

Olise has also emerged as a key creative outlet, troubling defenders with his movement and direct play.

With attacking depth and midfield control, France appear strongly positioned to pursue a third World Cup final appearance in succession.

However, attention remains on their defensive organisation as Sweden prepare to test their backline.

Sweden eye upset

Sweden arrive as underdogs but possess attacking options capable of causing problems.

The Scandinavian side will hope forwards Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres can rediscover form after relatively quiet performances so far in the competition.

France coach Didier Deschamps warned against complacency.

“Sweden are playing for their survival. Obviously they will do everything to win the game,” he said.

“We need to stay humble, maintain our determination and concentration. In the group stage winning the first game gave us some margin for error, but now we have no second chances.”

Sweden manager Graham Potter acknowledged the scale of the challenge.

“They have quality all over… They have won the World Cup before and they have a fantastic manager.

“An exciting challenge awaits us, and we will have to play the game of our lives, clearly.”

Haaland leads Norway charge

Elsewhere, Erling Haaland will attempt to inspire Norway into the next round when they face Ivory Coast in Dallas.

Haaland, who has already scored four goals at the tournament, was rested during Norway’s defeat to France and is expected to return fresh for the encounter.

Norway coach Stale Solbakken praised his striker’s influence.

“He’s a great leader for us. He has something you cannot always train, the instinct for goals.”

Mexico target home advantage

Co-hosts Mexico will also continue their campaign in front of home supporters at the Estadio Azteca against Ecuador.

Victory would keep Mexico in their capital city for the next stage where they would face the winner between England and DR Congo.

Recent World Cup drama

Monday’s action produced major surprises as Paraguay eliminated Germany via penalties after a 1–1 draw.

CrimeEdo Man Allegedly Fakes Own Kidnap, Demands N4m Ransom From Family by Deollaa(op): 10:02am On Jun 29
The Edo State Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly staging a fake kidnap in an attempt to extort N4million from the family of one of the suspects.

Confirming the development in a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikioedem, said detectives uncovered the alleged scheme after acting on credible information.

According to the command, investigations revealed that the incident was orchestrated on 23 June when one of the suspects allegedly contacted Alabi’s relatives and demanded ransom for his supposed release.

The suspects, identified as 48-year-old Lucky Alabi, and 37-year-old Taiye Enahoro, both from Uneme Akpama Community in Edo State, were arrested by operatives of the Igarra Division following what police described as intelligence-led investigations.

Police uncover alleged plot

The statement partly read, “The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that on 26th June, 2026, at about 1030hrs, operatives of Igarra Division arrested two suspects, Lucky Alabi ‘M’, 48 years, and Taiye Enahoro ‘M’, 37 years, both of Uneme Akpama Community, for conspiring to stage the fake kidnapping of Lucky Alabi.”

The police said further findings showed that the suspects allegedly executed the plan through a series of telephone calls intended to convince family members that Alabi had been abducted.

“Acting on credible intelligence and through diligent investigative efforts, police operatives uncovered the deception and successfully arrested both suspects as preliminary investigation reveals that the criminal plan was executed on 23rd June, 2026, when Taiye Enahoro allegedly placed several telephone calls to relatives of Lucky Alabi, falsely claiming that Alabi had been kidnapped and demanding the sum of N4,000,000 as ransom for his release.”

Suspects allegedly confess

The command disclosed that both suspects admitted to their involvement and would face prosecution after investigations are completed.

“The suspects have confessed to their respective roles in the staged kidnapping and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation,” the statement added.

Police warn against criminal deception

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, warned residents against engaging in criminal deception and fraudulent schemes.

Mr Agbonika cautioned against staging kidnappings or attempting to extort money from unsuspecting relatives under false pretences.

“The command reiterates its commitment to ensuring all persons involved in criminal acts are brought to justice,” the statement quoted him as saying.

The development was disclosed by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Muhammad Goni, in a statement released on Sunday night.

SportsWorld Cup: South Africa Make History, Beat South Korea 1-0 To Reach Knockout Sta by Deollaa(op): 11:18am On Jun 25
South Africa secured a historic place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time after edging South Korea 1–0 on Wednesday in a decisive Group A clash.

The Bafana Bafana, featuring at the World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010, completed a remarkable turnaround after opening their campaign with a disappointing 2–0 defeat to Mexico.

Following that setback, South Africa responded with a draw against the Czech Republic before producing a disciplined display against South Korea in Monterrey to seal second place in the group.

South Africa claimed victory through a second-half strike from Thapelo Maseko, whose composed finish proved enough to send his side into the last 32.

Speaking after the game, South Africa coach Hugo Broos admitted the achievement was difficult to describe.

“We scored that goal, and it was 20 minutes of heartbeating and hoping that the game should be finished as soon as possible.

“So yes, we are in the second round. It’s historic. But I’m very happy for the guys. I’ve worked with them for five years. And what we did in those five years is amazing,” Mr Broos said.

South Korea’s missed opportunities

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo surprised many by leaving captain Son Heung-min out of the starting line-up.

The Asian side began brightly, with stand-in captain Kim Min-jae coming close through a powerful header that was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, while Lee Kang-in also threatened.

South Africa gradually settled and created several openings but struggled to convert.

Their clearest first-half opportunity arrived in the 30th minute after goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu parried Thalente Mbatha’s effort into the path of Evidence Makgopa, but the striker failed to capitalise.

Mr Hong introduced Son at the start of the second half alongside two additional substitutions in an attempt to change the momentum.

Despite improved attacking intent from South Korea, South Africa eventually found the breakthrough.

Historic breakthrough

With updates filtering in that Mexico had taken control against the Czech Republic, urgency grew on both sides.

South Africa made the moment count in the 63rd minute when Tshepang Moremi delivered a cross that found Maseko, who kept his composure and fired beyond the goalkeeper at the near post.

South Korea pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages but could not break through.

The result means South Africa progressed to the knockout round for the first time in their World Cup history and will now face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on 28 June.

SportsWorld Cup: Ancelotti Hails Vinicius As Brazil Beat Scotland 3–0 by Deollaa(op): 11:09am On Jun 25
Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has praised forward Vinicius Junior as “one of the best players in the world” after the Real Madrid star delivered another standout performance in Brazil’s commanding 3–0 victory over Scotland at the FIFA World Cup.

The victory, secured on Wednesday in Miami, ensured Brazil progressed into the Round of 32 as winners of Group C, with Vinicius scoring twice in the opening half to continue his impressive tournament run.

Speaking after the match, Ancelotti lauded the 25-year-old’s consistency and impact for the national team.

“I had no doubts about how he would be coming into this World Cup,” Ancelotti said.

“For him, it is an honour to play for the national team. He is playing well and he even scored a header, which is very rare for him.

“I knew all about what Vini could do. He is one of the best players in the world.”

The Italian tactician, who previously coached Vinicius for four seasons at Real Madrid, said the winger’s form had never been in doubt.

Vinicius continues golden boot charge

SportsMorocco Beat Haiti 4-2 To Roll Into World Cup Last 32 by Deollaa(op): 10:55am On Jun 25
Morocco twice fought back from behind to defeat Haiti 4-2 in World Cup Group C encounter in Atlanta on Wednesday, sealing qualification to the round of 32 despite finishing second behind Brazil on goal difference.

The result ensured Morocco progressed to the knockout stage but missed the chance to top the group, setting up a likely clash against either the Netherlands or Japan in Monterrey on Monday.

Haiti, already eliminated before kick-off following defeats to Scotland and Brazil, bowed out with pride after scoring their first World Cup goals in 52 years and delivering a spirited performance backed by thousands of supporters in attendance.

Haiti strike first

Haiti stunned Morocco after just 10 minutes when Jean-Kevin Duverne advanced to the by-line and delivered a cross that was turned into the net by Lenny Joseph via a deflection off Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Morocco responded through captain Achraf Hakimi, who converted from close range after Bilal El Khannouss’s effort was parried by Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide.

However, Haiti restored their lead within minutes through a spectacular effort from Wilson Isidor, who unleashed a powerful long-range strike into the top corner.

Morocco pushed back and found an equaliser before half-time as Ismael Saibari finished calmly from Hakimi’s low delivery to make it 2-2 at the break.

Morocco seal qualification

With Brazil comfortably leading Scotland in the group’s other fixture, Morocco knew only a convincing win would give them top spot.

The breakthrough eventually came in the second half when substitute Soufiane Rahimi’s powerful effort from a corner took a deflection and flew into the net to give Morocco their first lead of the match.

Rahimi later created Morocco’s fourth after winning possession near Haiti’s goal and setting up Gessime Yassine to finish into an empty net.

The victory confirmed Morocco’s place in the knockout rounds and extended their strong World Cup campaign.

After the match, Hakimi said he remained focused despite recent off-field attention and expressed confidence about continuing his form.

“I am in a very good moment, personally and professionally,” he said. “I feel very good, I have good people around me that help me concentrate on the most important thing.”

Foreign AffairsTwin Earthquakes Kill 32, Injure Over 700 In Venezuela by Deollaa(op): 9:59am On Jun 25
Powerful twin earthquakes have killed at least 32 people and injured more than 700 in Venezuela after massive tremors collapsed buildings, damaged critical infrastructure and triggered panic across several regions of the country.

The disaster, which struck on Wednesday, prompted Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, to declare a state of emergency as emergency responders and residents searched through rubble for survivors.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquakes measured magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 and struck the same area within seconds of each other, sending shockwaves across the country and forcing the closure of the nation’s main international airport.

Addressing the nation on Thursday, Rodriguez confirmed the casualty figures.

“At this time, we have received reports of 32 deaths and more than 700 injured,” Mrs Rodriguez said, adding that authorities were still gathering information from La Guaira, one of the worst-hit areas near the capital.

She earlier disclosed that at least 20 aftershocks had followed the initial quakes.

Rescue efforts underway

Emergency teams, volunteers and residents worked through the night in affected communities to search for trapped victims.

In Caracas, AFP journalists reported scenes of devastation as rescue efforts intensified around collapsed structures.

One of the most severe incidents involved a 22-storey building in the Altamira district, where volunteers climbed over debris while relatives called out for missing loved ones.

Authorities also ordered precautionary measures in several locations.

Politics“tinubu Is Nigeria’s Most Criminal President”—pdp’s Pearse Threatens ICC Action by Deollaa(op): 11:45am On Jun 24
The Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr Adetokunbo Pearse, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of undermining Nigeria’s democracy and warned that the opposition would challenge any alleged manipulation of the 2027 presidential election through legal and international channels.

Mr Pearse made the remarks during an appearance on Voice of the People TV’s People’s Voice programme on Tuesday, where he criticised the Federal Government’s policies, questioned electoral processes and challenged the presidency to respond through legal means.

Speaking during the interview, Mr Pearse alleged that President Tinubu’s policies had worsened living conditions and governance outcomes.

“Our president is the most criminal president we've ever had in the history of Nigeria. Say it, let them take me to court. I'm saying it.”

The remarks come amid continued internal disputes within the PDP and growing political positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.

Election concerns

Addressing questions on how an incumbent president could be held accountable if electoral outcomes become disputed, Mr Pearse said the opposition would first exhaust institutional and judicial channels.

According to him, any allegation of election manipulation would require constitutional challenge through the courts and broader democratic pressure.

“If this election is rigged, we will challenge the results. Ultimately, when it has gone through the system, through the courts, and including international court pressure, we will get back our mandate.”

When pressed on the legal feasibility of taking action against a sitting president or pursuing international consequences, he argued that political crises sometimes move beyond conventional legal processes.

“It was not legally feasible in Venezuela when Maduro was arrested. It's not a question of legality; it’s an extrajudicial action when things have become unbearable, intolerable.”

He maintained that electoral integrity remains central to democratic legitimacy.

“Rigging the election is compromising the interest of the people... in a democracy you win an election because people voted for you and they expected you to perform in a certain way to improve their quality of life.”

Mr Pearse also raised concerns about election administration and criticised the continued reliance on physical collation processes.

“First and foremost, the fact that immediate transfer, electronic transfer of results was not approved is questionable. It has left a loophole because when the results come from the polling units and they're not uploaded directly to the INEC server directly, electronically, immediately, and they're still carrying results by hand, you know that is where we have a problem.”

SportsColombia Edge DR Congo To Reach World Cup Knockout Stage by Deollaa(op): 10:38am On Jun 24
Colombia booked their place in the knockout rounds of the World Cup after defeating Democratic Republic of the Congo 1-0 in a tense Group K encounter on Tuesday.

A second-half strike from Daniel Muñoz secured the victory in Guadalajara and moved Colombia to the top of the group with six points, putting them two clear of Portugal with one first-round fixture remaining.

The result confirms Colombia’s progression to the knockout stage after missing out on qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Colombia dominate but struggle to break through

Backed by a sea of yellow inside the Mexican stadium, Colombia controlled much of the opening exchanges and repeatedly tested DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.

Mr Muñoz missed an early opportunity and later had an effort ruled out for offside, while James Rodríguez unleashed a powerful strike that forced a brilliant save.

Mr Mpasi continued to frustrate the South Americans with further stops to deny Johan Mojica and Luis Díaz.

SportsPanama Crash Out Of World Cup After Narrow Defeat To Croatia by Deollaa(op): 10:16am On Jun 24
Panama have been eliminated from World Cup contention after suffering a narrow 1–0 defeat to Croatia in a crucial Group L encounter on Tuesday.

The result kept Croatia’s hopes of reaching the final 32 alive while ending Panama’s campaign after two difficult outings at the tournament.

The decisive moment came in the 54th minute when Ante Budimir converted from close range to hand the Europeans all three points in front of a crowd of about 43,000 in Toronto.

Speaking after the match, Panama coach Thomas Christiansen admitted his side paid the price for failing to convert opportunities.

“You cannot win a match if you don’t score,” Mr Christiansen said.

Despite the elimination, Mr Christiansen praised his players’ performance and commitment against one of football’s established tournament sides.

“I am super proud of them. These players, after these two World Cup matches, won’t be where they are today,” he added.

Match details

Croatia entered the contest under pressure after opening their campaign with a 4–2 defeat to England and needed a response to revive qualification hopes.

Veteran midfielder Luka Modric marked his 200th international appearance for Croatia but nearly opened scoring early in the encounter when his headed effort sailed over the crossbar.

Panama, however, looked dangerous in the opening half and almost shocked the Croatians in the 23rd minute.

Jose Luis Rodriguez directed a header toward goal, but Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic stretched brilliantly to push the effort onto the crossbar.

The momentum shifted after the break.

In the 54th minute, Josip Stanisic delivered a dangerous cross which Budimir tapped home, sparking celebrations among the Croatian-heavy support inside the stadium.

Croatia almost doubled the lead moments later after Modric released Marco Pasalic through on goal, but Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera denied the first attempt before Pasalic blasted the rebound over the bar.

Panama continued to search for an equaliser but failed to break through, extending their goalless run at the tournament.

Modric milestone celebrated

After the match, Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic reflected on Modric’s milestone appearance.

Mr Modric, who was substituted after 81 minutes to a standing ovation, was later lifted by teammates in celebration.

“It could be that Luka might want to avoid all this. He’s very humble and very simple,” Mr Dalic said.

According to the Croatian coach, Mr Modric remains a natural leader whose influence comes through character rather than authority.

“That’s what makes Luka a quality person,” he added.

Crime‘we’re Ready For Talks Or War With Government’ — Turji Claims Responsibility For by Deollaa(op): 10:44am On Jun 22
A video allegedly showing wanted bandit leader Bello Turji has surfaced online, with the masked figure claiming responsibility for recent attacks on security operatives in parts of Sokoto and Zamfara states while declaring readiness for either negotiations or armed confrontation with the government.
The video, reportedly recorded in Hausa and dated 20 June 2026, showed the speaker believed to be Mr Turji surrounded by armed men dressed in military-style camouflage.

In the recording, Mr Turji alleged that members of his group launched retaliatory attacks against individuals he accused of targeting their communities and seizing livestock.

“Some people who are chasing away our livestock are killing our innocent brothers and sisters, people who have done nothing wrong, in places such as Shinkafi in Zamfara State, Sabon Birni in Sokoto State and other surrounding areas,” he said.

Claiming success in the attacks, he added, “Allah granted us victory over these people who are carrying out these operations and driving away our livestock. We killed them. May Allah help us to succeed in defeating them and in recovering our animals from their hands.”

Turji signals openness to negotiation
Mr Turji also addressed the possibility of peace talks, suggesting his group was open to dialogue but prepared to continue fighting if military pressure persists.

“If the government is ready for negotiation, we are also ready for negotiation. But if they want to continue with force, we are prepared. Our fighters are ready for whatever comes,” he said.

PoliticsEkiti Election: Opposition Faults INEC, Protests Vote-Buying, Glitches by Deollaa(op): 7:08am On Jun 22
Opposition parties on Sunday criticised the conduct of Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State and several by-elections across the country, alleging vote-buying, ballot irregularities and administrative lapses by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Osa Director, described the Ekiti governorship election as peaceful but questioned allegations of vote-buying and other irregularities.

“Although the Ekiti election was violence-free, it was marred by allegations of vote buying. I don’t know why INEC allowed people to get away with vote buying right under the watch of its officials.

Although the parties acknowledged improvements in logistics and the largely peaceful conduct of the polls, they expressed concerns that recurring complaints could undermine confidence in future elections.

“Again, I don’t know how some persons were also in possession of voters’ cards that don’t belong to them. That also begs the question of how they managed to access it.

“These are inadequacies and lapses that must be corrected before the 2027 General Elections,” Mr Director stated.

He added that the election should serve as a test of INEC’s readiness ahead of future national polls.

Parties raise concerns

Also reacting, the National Publicity Secretary of the Social Democratic Party, Rufus Aiyenigba, acknowledged improvements in election logistics but accused INEC of damaging public confidence.

“On a general note, there was a remarkable improvement in logistics movement. But the rampant vote-buying was a dent in the integrity of the election.

“Also, the deliberate shutting out of the SDP, by way of not allowing for the uploading of the names of party agents for the election, rendered the election a nullity,” Mr Aiyenigba said.

He called on citizens to defend democratic processes and resist actions capable of weakening public trust in elections.

The Labour Party also expressed reservations over the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election.

According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the election delivered both positive and negative outcomes.

“The election presented a mixed record of commendable performance and significant oversights on the part of the Independent National Electoral Commission,” Mr Asogwa stated.

The seizure was disclosed in a statement published on the official Nigeria Customs Service X account and contained in a press release issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs, Isah Sulaiman.

Mr Sulaiman said the operations were carried out through credible intelligence gathering, enhanced risk profiling systems, and collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and other relevant regulatory agencies.

According to him, officers intercepted two 40-foot containers carrying expired pharmaceutical products allegedly intended for illegal relabelling and reintroduction into the Nigerian market.

“The combined Duty Paid Value of the intercepted expired pharmaceuticals is N12,784,479,341.72,” Mr Sulaiman stated, describing the importation attempt as a major act of economic sabotage and a serious threat to public health.

Major drug interception

In one of the operations, Customs officers seized a 40-foot container identified as CAAU7569127, which contained a large consignment of Cannabis sativa, commonly known as “Canadian loud.”

Mr Sulaiman disclosed that officers recovered 3,639 sachets of the substance, each weighing 500 grammes, bringing the total estimated weight to about 1,819 kilogrammes (1.81 tonnes).

Preliminary field examinations confirmed the substance as Cannabis sativa.

According to the Command, the illicit drugs were concealed inside a black Toyota Nissan vehicle, a Toyota Sienna vehicle, and further hidden in bags and drums loaded inside the container.

Customs issues warning

Reacting to the seizures, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, warned importers and criminal networks against engaging in smuggling and illegal importation.

“Unpatriotic importers and their collaborators who deliberately engage in smuggling, drug trafficking and the importation of expired pharmaceuticals are enemies of Nigeria’s progress,” Mr Oshoba said.

He added that the agency possesses the intelligence capabilities, technology and operational readiness to detect and stop illegal trade.

“We have the intelligence, the technology and the resolve to identify and apprehend them. Anyone still contemplating these criminal acts should desist immediately because the consequences will be swift, decisive and uncompromising,” he stated.

Politics“yari Is Not Sponsoring Any Anti-tinubu Protest” — Ex-governor’s Aide by Deollaa(op): 1:33pm On Jun 20
Former Zamfara State Governor and Senator representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, has distanced himself from reports alleging his involvement in sponsoring a planned protest against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The clarification was made in a statement issued on Friday by Mr Yari’s Chief of Staff, Abdullahi Tsafe, who described the allegation as false, politically motivated, and aimed at damaging the senator’s reputation.

According to Mr Tsafe, Senator Yari has no connection whatsoever with any planned protest against the Federal Government and remains committed to supporting the current administration.

“Let it be stated categorically and without ambiguity that Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari has no connection whatsoever with any planned protest against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.

“The allegation is false, mischievous, politically motivated and exists only in the fertile imagination of those whose stock-in-trade is misinformation and character assassination.”

Reaffirms support for President Tinubu

Mr Tsafe argued that there would be no reason for Senator Yari to sponsor activities aimed at undermining an administration he had consistently supported.

He stated that Senator Yari’s relationship with President Tinubu is built on mutual respect, political conviction, and a shared commitment to national development and stability.

According to him, Senator Yari backed President Tinubu’s presidential ambition long before his emergence and invested substantial political goodwill and personal resources toward the success of that project.

PoliticsSenate Moves To End Regulatory Clash In Nigeria’s Petroleum Sector by Deollaa(op): 1:17pm On Jun 20
The Senate Committee on Petroleum Sector has pledged to resolve the longstanding jurisdictional dispute between the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority in a move aimed at improving regulatory coordination and strengthening investor confidence in Nigeria’s energy industry.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Downstream Petroleum Sector, Abdulrahman Sumaila, made the commitment at the end of a five-day retreat held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

According to Sumaila, the committee intends to produce practical and implementable recommendations that will promote regulatory harmony, support energy security, and drive sustainable economic growth.

Senate seeks practical solutions

Mr Sumaila explained that the retreat was designed to provide a neutral platform for engagement among all relevant stakeholders involved in petroleum regulation.

“The objectives of the retreat are to facilitate meaningful dialogue among all stakeholders on issues arising from overlapping statutory mandates and develop practical coordination frameworks capable of promoting seamless regulation while respecting the lawful mandates of the institutions involved,” he said.

PoliticsKwara Drags Saraki To Court Over Alleged Defamation by Deollaa(op): 10:16am On Jun 18
The Kwara State Government has filed a criminal defamation suit against former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over alleged false statements concerning the educational qualification of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The case was instituted before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin by the state Attorney General, Senior Ibrahim, alongside officials of the Ministry of Justice, and came up for hearing on Wednesday before Justice M.O. Folorunso.

According to court filings, Mr Saraki allegedly made and circulated claims on 17 April 2026, via social media and newspapers, suggesting that Governor AbdulRazaq did not complete secondary school education.

Prosecution seeks arrest warrant

The prosecution alleged that the publication was false, malicious, and capable of undermining public peace and the reputation of the state government.

Prosecuting counsel, R.O. Balogun, urged the court to issue a bench warrant against Mr Saraki for failing to appear despite being served court processes.

“The defendant was duly served but failed to appear before the court. We urge Your Lordship to issue a bench warrant,” Mr Balogun said.

He also opposed an adjournment request by the defence, insisting that the prosecution was ready to proceed.

Defence challenges jurisdiction

Mr Saraki’s counsel, Jimoh Mumini, challenged both the jurisdiction of the court and the validity of service, arguing that the matter should properly be heard by a Federal High Court.

“This matter falls within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court,” he submitted.

After hearing arguments, Justice Folorunso ruled that the defendant was entitled to seek an adjournment and fixed 3 July 2026, for hearing of preliminary objections and possible arraignment.

Political tension in Kwara

The case marks a fresh escalation in the political and legal rivalry between the AbdulRazaq administration and Saraki’s political camp in Kwara State.

Earlier, the state government had filed a separate 20-count charge involving Mr Saraki, former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, and other aides over allegations linked to the 2018 Offa robbery investigation.

Politics“no New Taxes For Fuel, Telecom Services”— FG by Deollaa(op): 10:06am On Jun 18
The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting it has approved or is considering new taxes on telecommunications services and petroleum products following recommendations contained in the latest report by the International Monetary Fund.

The government clarified that the recommendations contained in the IMF Article IV Consultation Report do not represent official policy and are not binding on Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations Unit of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie, the government insisted that no fresh taxes are being planned for either sector.

“The government has dismissed reports suggesting that it has adopted or is considering new taxes on telecommunications services and petroleum products following the publication of the IMF Article IV Consultation Report on Nigeria,” the statement said.

The clarification follows recent public debate after the IMF proposed revenue-enhancing measures aimed at improving fiscal sustainability and increasing government income.

The Federal Government, however, maintained that taxation decisions remain sovereign matters and must follow constitutional and legislative procedures.

PoliticsParty War: APC, PDP Clash Over Pantami In Gombe by Deollaa(op): 11:59am On Jun 17
A political dispute has erupted in Gombe State as the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party traded accusations over the political membership status of former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Ali Isa Pantami.

Speaking to journalists, APC Publicity Secretary, Moses Kyari, said ward executives in Mr Pantami’s constituency denied ever seeing or deliberating on any resignation letter.

“25 out of the 27 members of the ward executive committee publicly stated that they neither saw nor deliberated on any resignation letter,” he said.

The controversy follows Mr Pantami’s emergence as the PDP governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, after the APC primary reportedly produced Jamilu Gwamna as its flagbearer.

APC: “Pantami still our member”

The APC in Gombe State insists Mr Pantami remains a member of the party, alleging that due process was not followed in his purported resignation.

Mr Kyari added that the alleged resignation letter, reportedly dated 19 May 2026, was only received on 23 May and delivered by a third party, raising questions about its authenticity.

He argued that under the APC constitution and electoral guidelines, Mr Pantami remains a member until proper procedures are completed.

APC questions alleged presidential endorsement claim

The APC also dismissed claims that Mr Pantami said his defection and governorship ambition had the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We categorically reject this assertion,” Mr Kyari stated, urging the party leadership and the Presidency to clarify the matter.

PDP: “Pantami is our bona fide member”

In a swift response, the PDP insisted Mr Pantami had legally joined the party and is now its valid governorship candidate.

Crime“abducted Easter Worshippers Still Missing After 70 Days” — Kaduna Community Rai by Deollaa(op): 11:49am On Jun 17
The Kuturmi Unity Development Association has accused the Federal Government, the Kaduna State Government, and security agencies of failing to adequately respond to worsening insecurity in Kachia Local Government Area, alleging that worshippers abducted during an Easter Sunday church service in Ariko remain in captivity more than 70 days later.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its President, J.D. Ariko, and Publicity Secretary, Manasseh Samuel, the association said families of the victims have continued to endure uncertainty and emotional distress.

“It is now over 70 days since innocent Christian worshippers were abducted during an Easter Sunday church service at Ariko,” the statement said.

“Families whose loved ones were taken have been left to suffer in silence, with little evidence of a coordinated and determined effort by government authorities to secure their release.”

Community says captives remain missing

The association further disclosed that 11 residents abducted during a separate attack on the Awon community more than 50 days ago have also not regained freedom.

According to the group, prolonged captivity of victims has heightened fear and anxiety across affected communities and raised concerns about the level of attention being given to security challenges in the area.

KUDA alleged that persistent attacks and insecurity have displaced more than 100 communities across Kuturmi land and surrounding areas.

The group claimed thousands of residents have been forced out of their ancestral homes and are currently living in informal settlements without official camps or sufficient government support.

According to the statement, displaced families are facing shortages of food, healthcare, education, and other basic services.

The association added that many children have dropped out of school while vulnerable groups, including pregnant women and elderly residents, are experiencing severe hardship.

Calls for government action

The group called on the Federal Government, Kaduna State authorities, the Kachia Local Government Council, and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and improve protection for vulnerable communities.

PoliticsTinubu Warns Criminals After Troops Eliminate Kogi Bandit Leader by Deollaa(op): 11:42am On Jun 17
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to criminal elements across the country, declaring that there will be no safe haven for bandits and violent offenders following the killing of a notorious bandit leader in Kogi State by Nigerian troops.

The President gave the warning on Tuesday while commending the Armed Forces and security agencies for what he described as a decisive operation that led to the elimination of Ibrahim Bastuji, a suspected bandit kingpin linked to attacks and kidnappings across Kogi and neighbouring states.

According to the Presidency, the operation represents a major setback for criminal networks operating within the region.

“I congratulate our gallant troops on this decisive milestone. Nigeria will not surrender any part of its territory to criminals.

“Those who choose the path of violence against innocent citizens will find no hiding place,” he stated.

Presidency praises security forces

In a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Bastuji’s activities as responsible for prolonged hardship, insecurity and fear among affected communities.

He said the operation reflects renewed commitment by security agencies to reclaim vulnerable areas and restore public confidence.

“This success reflects the renewed determination of our security forces to secure every inch of our land,” he added.

Rescue of ex-defence spokesman’s widow

The President also applauded troops for rescuing Hajiya Amina Abubakar, widow of late former Chief of Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar.

Her rescue followed reports that the retired military officer died while in captivity after being abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State.

“The safe return of Hajiya Amina Rabe Abubakar is a source of relief to her family and to all Nigerians,” President Tinubu said.

He praised the intelligence coordination and professionalism of security personnel involved in the operation.

The President reassured Nigerians that his administration would continue investing in resources, training and operational support for security agencies to combat banditry, kidnapping and violent crime nationwide.

He also urged citizens to support security agencies through timely intelligence and community cooperation.

BusinessDangote Refinery Cuts Petrol Price By N75 Per Litre by Deollaa(op): 10:52am On Jun 16
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) by ₦75 per litre, adjusting its pricing structure in response to easing global crude oil tensions.

The refinery announced the reduction in a circular sent to fuel marketers on Monday, stating that the decision followed a decline in geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which had previously driven up energy prices.

“Following the de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East, which has impacted energy prices, we have reviewed our premium motor spirit gantry/coastal price,” the circular stated.

New pricing structure

According to the announcement, the gantry price has been reduced from ₦1,250 to ₦1,175 per litre.

The coastal price per metric tonne also dropped from ₦1,595,790 to ₦1,495,215, with the new rates taking effect from midnight on June 16, 2026.

The refinery added that all outstanding uncollected volumes would be repriced under the new structure.

Global oil market influence

The price adjustment comes amid a decline in global crude oil prices following reports of easing tensions between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz.

Foreign AffairsUS, Iran Reach Deal To End War, Reopen Hormuz by Deollaa(op): 8:49am On Jun 15
The United States and Iran have announced a breakthrough agreement aimed at ending the Middle East conflict across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, and reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a move that could ease pressure on global oil markets and reduce regional tensions.

According to statements released by both sides, the agreement is expected to be signed on Friday in Switzerland following weeks of negotiations and mounting international pressure to halt hostilities.

US President Donald Trump described the agreement as complete and suggested that global oil shipments would resume once the Strait of Hormuz reopens.

“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Mr Trump wrote on social media, adding that global shipping and oil flows should resume.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr Kazem Gharibabadi, later stated in televised remarks that the agreement would bring an immediate end to military operations and open the door for further negotiations within two months aimed at reaching a final settlement.

The announcement came after tensions escalated following Israeli military actions targeting Hezbollah positions in Beirut, raising fears that negotiations could collapse.

However, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Mr Shehbaz Sharif, later confirmed that both sides had agreed to permanently end military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon.

Deal details remain unclear

Despite the announcement, several key elements of the agreement remain undisclosed.

Iranian media reports suggested that the United States could release frozen Iranian assets as part of confidence-building measures tied to future negotiations.

Reports also indicated discussions around Iran’s uranium enrichment programme, although no official confirmation has been released.

Mr Trump later hinted that negotiations were continuing over possible timelines for restricting Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities but declined to disclose details publicly.

International reactions

Global leaders welcomed the development cautiously.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres described the agreement as an important opportunity to stabilise the Middle East.

European powers including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy also signalled readiness to support diplomatic efforts and potentially review sanctions frameworks if progress continues.

Financial markets reacted positively, with oil prices falling sharply and investors responding to expectations of reduced disruption to global energy supply chains.

Politics“90% Political Compensation For APC Members” — Anosike Slams President Tinubu’s by Deollaa(op): 11:40am On Jun 13
Public affairs analyst Dr. Peter Anosike on Saturday, criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Democracy Day honours list and national security narrative, describing both as disconnected from Nigeria’s lived realities and increasingly reduced to political messaging.

Speaking on Voice of the People TV (VOPTV) Political Lens, Dr. Anosike argued that the honours list announced during the President’s Democracy Day address was largely driven by political loyalty rather than democratic sacrifice or historical contribution.

“I saw those names and was shocked... Ninety percent of those names have nothing to do with the struggle for democracy. They were rewarded for being good members of APC.” He stated.

His remarks come amid ongoing national debate over the credibility of political rewards systems, state recognition, and the place of historical activists in Nigeria’s democratic memory.

Mr Anosike faulted the omission of key pro-democracy figures, insisting that the gesture weakened the symbolic meaning of June 12 recognition.

“Agbakoba was in prison... he almost got blinded at some point in Yaba during protests in 1993. His name is not there... This list does not mean anything to me.” Mr Anosike criticized.

Mr Anosike also expanded his criticism to Nigeria’s broader democratic trajectory, arguing that the country has failed to translate civilian rule into meaningful development or rights protection.

“We’ve made one step forward and five steps backward... Democracy does not mean changing khaki to civilian clothing. Democracy means development, it means observing fundamental human rights.” he said.
