Billionaire investor and Group Chairman of First HoldCo Plc, Femi Otedola, has further strengthened his controlling position in the financial services group after acquiring shares worth N18.11bn on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).

According to a regulatory disclosure filed with the NGX on Friday, Calvados Global Services Limited, an entity closely associated with Mr. Otedola, acquired 138,041,465 ordinary shares of First HoldCo Plc on Thursday, 6 August.

The shares were purchased at N131.20 each, bringing the total value of the transaction to N18,111,040,208, or approximately N18.11bn.

The transaction was executed on the Lagos trading floor and was disclosed to the market by the Group Company Secretary, Mrs. Abiola Baruwa.

The latest acquisition represents one of the largest single-day insider equity purchases on the Nigerian bourse this year.

The filing was made in accordance with regulatory requirements governing share transactions involving persons discharging managerial responsibilities and individuals or entities closely associated with them.

Calvados Global Services Limited is registered as an entity associated with Mr. Otedola, who is both a significant shareholder and board leader of First HoldCo.

The latest purchase is also Mr. Otedola's third major equity acquisition in less than three weeks, following other multi-billion-naira purchases in late July.

Following the latest transaction, his total beneficial ownership in First HoldCo has risen to approximately 27.16 per cent of the company's issued share capital, further consolidating his position as its largest individual shareholder.

Acquisition comes amid banking recapitalisation

The aggressive accumulation of shares comes as First HoldCo continues its recapitalisation programme following the Central Bank of Nigeria's mandatory recapitalisation requirements for commercial and holding banking institutions.

Mr. Otedola has previously outlined a long-term strategy for the financial institution, indicating that his investment is focused on sustained value creation rather than short-term market trading.

Speaking on his continued investment in the group, Mr. Otedola said:

"That figure speaks not to speculation but to unflinching confidence in the institution's future and my unwavering commitment to its success. If you look at my antecedents, my investment threshold is always centered on long-term value creation."

Analyst says acquisition could boost market sentiment

A Lagos-based trader and capital market analyst, Mr. Ade Ojapa, said insider investment of such magnitude could signal confidence in First HoldCo's financial position and long-term prospects.

According to Mr. Ojapa, the size of the transaction could also influence market activity around the company's shares.

"Market participants expect the sheer size of the trade to boost trading volume and sentiment around First HoldCo equities as the market digests the structural impact of the deal," he said.

The latest acquisition places renewed attention on First HoldCo's recapitalisation strategy, ownership structure and prospects within Nigeria's evolving banking and financial services sector.

A social and political analyst, Chijioke Nwoye, has warned that Nigeria's 2027 general election will be less of a contest between political parties and more of a confrontation between citizens and state institutions, alleging that opposition parties are being systematically weakened ahead of the polls.

Mr Nwoye made the remarks on Wednesday, on People's voice program on Voice of the People (VOP) TV, where he argued that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was using state institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, to frustrate opposition parties before the commencement of campaigns.

"The 2027 election is going to be a very tough election. It is going to be between Nigerians and INEC, not even APC and NDC or PDP—no, it's going to be between Nigerians and the system," Mr Nwoye declared.

Mr Nwoye’s comments followed recent public clarification by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, who denied endorsing President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027 after reports circulating on social media claimed traditional rulers had thrown their support behind the President's re-election bid.

Opposition under pressure

Speaking on the political climate ahead of the election, Mr Nwoye said the worsening economic hardship, insecurity and public dissatisfaction had increased voter determination, adding that attempts to weaken opposition parties through prolonged legal battles would ultimately fail.

"Everyone is seeing what is happening in the country. No one is safe; even the rich sometimes look like they are not safe," he said.

He alleged that opposition parties were being distracted from political mobilisation through court cases and internal disputes.

"They are using everything within their power to make sure that they frustrate all these political parties... The time other political parties would use in campaigning or building their structure, they are using it to go to court and argue this and that," Mr Nwoye said.

The analyst specifically alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was facing coordinated pressure from state institutions.

"To me, everyone knows that NDC is doing everything within their power to make sure that they are on the ballot box, and APC, INEC, and EFCC are using everything to frustrate them," he asserted.

NDC sets up reconciliation panel

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress has inaugurated a seven-member reconciliation panel chaired by Professor Pat Utomi to resolve internal disputes arising from its primary elections, including the controversy surrounding the submission of two candidates for the Edo South Senatorial ticket.

The panel was constituted on Thursday following concerns over the party's internal nomination process after INEC listed both Hon. Sunday Agubo and Mrs Akule C. as candidates for the Edo South Senatorial seat.

Speaking on Voice of the People TV, the NDC's Lagos Central Senatorial candidate, Ladipo Johnson, attributed the development to the party's rapid expansion and the compressed timetable for candidate submissions.

"When you have a situation where so many people from different places rushed into a party within such a short time... it became slightly difficult for the national working committee to control such a number of people," Mr Johnson explained.

He, however, maintained that the party remained firmly on course ahead of the commencement of official campaigns.

Obi-Kwankwaso alliance intact

Mr Johnson also dismissed reports suggesting a rift between the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and vice-presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to him, the alliance between the Obidient Movement and the Kwankwasiyya Movement remained strong despite recent disagreements involving supporters over the management of the coalition's digital platforms.

"There's no issue at all whatsoever between the Obidients and the Kwankwasiyya... The working together is getting stronger by the day," he said.

Explaining the source of the controversy, Mr Johnson added:

"A few people from the Obidient movement... had an issue with the director-general. Someone had access to the X handle and changed the password and started to issue directives."

Nigeria's aviation sector may be headed for another industrial dispute as two major aviation unions have threatened to begin picketing airlines accused of withholding billions of naira in statutory Ticket Sales Charges (TSC), warning that the action could commence at any time.

The threat follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the affected airlines on August 3, 2026, after an earlier 14-day notice failed to secure compliance.

The unions disclosed their position in a joint statement signed by the General Secretary of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Frances Akinjole, and the Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Odinaka Igbokwe.

According to the unions, the affected airlines have been collecting statutory Ticket Sales Charges from passengers on behalf of government aviation agencies but have failed to remit the funds as required by law.

The Ticket Sales Charges are deducted from passengers' airfares to fund key aviation agencies, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The unions argued that the failure to remit the charges threatens aviation safety oversight, air navigation services, accident investigations, weather forecasting, manpower development and other critical functions within the aviation industry.

"Dialogue has failed"

The labour groups said all efforts to resolve the issue through dialogue had been exhausted, insisting that the matter extends beyond financial obligations to the safety of the aviation sector and the welfare of workers.

The statement read, "The expiration of the seven-day ultimatum, coming after the earlier 14-day notice, has shown that these airlines are deliberately refusing to do what is right.

"They collected this money from passengers on behalf of government aviation agencies, yet they have chosen to withhold it despite repeated appeals."

The unions further alleged that the continued withholding of the funds was undermining the smooth operation of Nigeria's aviation industry.

"It has become crystal clear that these airlines have decided to siphon funds meant for the smooth running of Nigeria's aviation industry to the detriment of our collective safety and well-being," the statement added.

Airlines reject unions' claims

Reacting to the threat, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) dismissed the unions' position, saying they had no transactional relationship with the labour groups.

The Federal Government has approved a financing framework and key institutional reforms aimed at accelerating the electrification of health facilities across Nigeria, targeting reliable 24-hour electricity supply to at least 30 per cent of the country's health facilities by the end of 2027.

The approval was granted on Tuesday at the third meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee of the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative, a presidential programme jointly coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Federal Ministry of Power to improve electricity access in public healthcare institutions.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, disclosed the outcome of the meeting, saying the committee also endorsed new governance structures, approved a facility energy management framework and cleared eight private-sector proposals for further engagement after they emerged from about 70 submissions received during the National Healthcare Electrification Investor Matchmaking Week held in Lagos.

Dr Salako said the decisions marked a significant step towards delivering uninterrupted electricity to hospitals through public-private partnerships.

"This is progress with respect to the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative that was established by Mr President after the National Dialogue in December 2025.

"The steering committee considered the report of the technical committee, and members were particularly happy with the progress made so far," Dr Salako said.

According to Dr Salako, the committee approved a financing framework to mobilise investments for healthcare electrification, alongside a facility energy management framework to ensure participating hospitals establish sustainable systems for managing energy infrastructure.

He disclosed that Energy Management Teams had already been constituted in federal tertiary hospitals, while state governments had been encouraged to establish similar structures in their health facilities.

Dr Salako also announced that the initiative would be institutionalised through dedicated budgetary provisions and the establishment of a full-time Project Coordination Unit to oversee implementation.

"Our goal, as approved by Mr President, is to ensure that we deliver reliable energy access to at least 30 per cent of Nigeria's health facilities by the end of 2027 using public-private partnerships that prioritise energy-as-a-service delivery models," he said.

Tailored energy solutions

Explaining the implementation strategy, Dr Salako said different energy technologies would be deployed depending on the needs of individual health facilities.

"There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Some facilities will use mini-grids, others may adopt gas-powered systems or other solutions. We will deploy whatever technology best suits each location," Dr Salako added.

He noted that while governance structures had been established over the past eight months, electrification projects were already ongoing across primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities.

Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor have confirmed they are in transfer negotiations with Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, with the former Liverpool star expected to arrive in Turkey on Wednesday for discussions.

The Black Sea club announced the development in a statement on Tuesday, saying Salah would first arrive at Istanbul Ataturk Airport before travelling to Trabzon later in the day.

The Presidency has dismissed claims by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that the Federal Government received an unaccounted oil windfall of N7.98 trillion, describing the allegation as analytically flawed and unsupported by facts.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, challenged Mr Atiku to provide evidence for the claim while defending the economic policies of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

The statement, titled "Facts, Not Fear: A Point-by-point Response to Atiku Abubakar On Nigeria’s Reform Journey," maintained that no such oil windfall existed.

"There is no such windfall. Any incremental revenue from higher oil prices is reflected in the monthly FAAC figures," Mr Onanuga stated.

Presidency defends economic reforms

The Presidency argued that Nigeria's economic reforms were yielding positive results, noting that the country's dollar-denominated Gross Domestic Product had recovered significantly following the exchange-rate adjustment.

According to the statement, Nigeria's dollar GDP increased from about $253 billion after the currency reform to approximately $377 billion, representing a 49 per cent rise.

It also said the country's naira GDP expanded from N314 trillion in 2024 to about N530 trillion, reflecting stronger economic activity and price adjustments.

The Presidency criticised Atiku for focusing on earlier phases of the reforms instead of their long-term impact.

"Economies are dynamic. Reforms are processes, not events. Judging a reform programme solely by its earliest and most painful phase is like judging chemotherapy by the nausea it induces while ignoring the remission it seeks to achieve," the statement said.

Debt profile remains sustainable

Responding to concerns over government borrowing, the Presidency maintained that Nigeria's debt profile remained within acceptable limits.

It said the country's debt-to-GDP ratio stood at less than 40 per cent, lower than several other countries, including South Africa, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The statement also noted that the debt service-to-revenue ratio had dropped from nearly 100 per cent in December 2022 to below 60 per cent, describing this as evidence of improved fiscal management.

The self-acclaimed Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, Adeniyi Adeyemi, has denied allegations that he single-handedly created the disputed agency, alleging that several ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government processed, recognised or interacted with the council.

Mr Adeyemi, who is currently in police custody, made the claims in a statement issued on Sunday through his legal defence team, led by Festus Akhigbe, while demanding an opportunity to appear before the House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating the council.

The legal team argued that their client should be allowed to testify before the committee chaired by Mr Yusuf Gagdi, warning that any report produced without hearing from him would violate his constitutional right to a fair hearing.

“We formally request that the panel issue the necessary administrative clearance to allow our client, Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, to appear in person and testify.

“Any investigative outcome or final legislative report produced without affording our client a direct hearing would be fundamentally flawed, incomplete, and a breach of the constitutional right to a fair hearing (audi alteram partem),” the statement read.

Lawyers reject 'mastermind' allegation

Mr Adeyemi’s lawyers rejected what they described as attempts to portray him as “an isolated, mastermind impostor” who fabricated a government agency without institutional backing.

According to the statement, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation acknowledged documents relating to the council and facilitated office allocation within the Federal Secretariat.

“We, the legal defence team of Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, issue this public statement to set the record straight following recent developments, our client’s current police detention, and the ongoing legislative hearings.

“The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and Central Bank of Nigeria acted on official documentation to issue administrative budget codes, grant self-accounting status, post federal civil service staff to the council, and officially open operational accounts.

“The Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation formally approved the establishment structure and granted recruitment waivers that enabled the onboarding of 314 personnel.”

More agencies allegedly involved

The legal team further alleged that heads of security agencies attended programmes organised by the council, while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission allocated a property to it, requested a processing fee and presented a plaque of recognition to its leadership.

The statement added, “If the SGF, the Accountant-General, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Head of Service, the Budget Office, the EFCC, the National Assembly, and the heads of Nigeria’s primary security architecture all verified, processed, funded, and officially interacted with this agency over an extended period, how can a single citizen, Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, be held uniquely responsible for failing to detect what the entire apparatus of the State validated?

“It is an administrative impossibility for an unassisted individual to mislead every arm of the Federal Government simultaneously without official, high-level institutional sanction.”

The defence maintained that Mr Adeyemi was being made “a scapegoat” to cover up what it described as institutional lapses, procedural failures and internal approvals within government.

Calls for wider probe

The legal team called for a broader investigation involving civil society organisations, legal experts and independent observers to examine what it described as the complete paper trail across all ministries, departments and agencies linked to the council.

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has launched a fresh attack on President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of intolerance toward dissent and attempting to conceal Nigeria’s worsening economic realities through what he described as “statistical manipulation.”

The former vice president also condemned the Presidency’s criticism of former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, over his remarks on the state of the nation, demanding an immediate apology to the cleric and the Catholic Church.

The position was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.

According to Mr Shaibu, Atiku accused the Presidency of choosing political attacks over introspection following recent remarks by members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria on the state of the nation.

Mr Atiku said that instead of addressing the concerns raised by the bishops, the Presidency resorted to intimidation and attempts to discredit respected religious leaders.

“It was both unfortunate and dangerous that, instead of reflecting on the substance of the cleric’s message, the Presidency chose the familiar path of intimidation, ridicule and political attacks,” he said.

Mr Atiku described the Catholic Church as one of Nigeria’s enduring moral voices, noting that its leaders had consistently spoken in defence of the poor, vulnerable and oppressed, regardless of the government in power.

“The Catholic Church has, for generations, stood as one of the moral voices of our nation.

“Its bishops and priests have consistently spoken for the poor, the oppressed and the vulnerable, irrespective of who occupies Aso Rock.

“Their duty is not to flatter those in power but to speak truth to power,” he stated.

He commended the Catholic bishops for what he described as their courage in openly expressing concerns about the country’s economic and political situation.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the publication of its presidential candidate by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ended months of speculation over the party’s participation in the 2027 presidential election.

The party said those who predicted it would fail to produce a presidential candidate had been proven wrong.

According to the PDP, the inclusion of its presidential candidate, Senator Sandy Onor, and running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, on INEC’s published list of candidates represents a major milestone in its preparations for the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, said the publication had “effectively laid to rest” what he described as sustained misinformation and propaganda aimed at undermining confidence in the PDP.

The statement read, “Of particular significance is the publication of the names of our presidential candidate, Distinguished Senator Sandy Ojang Onor, and his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, who will proudly fly the flag of our great party in the 2027 presidential election.”

The statement followed INEC’s publication of the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2027 general election.

In recent months, the PDP had been embroiled in internal leadership disputes and legal battles that fuelled speculation over its ability to complete its nomination process before the statutory deadline.

The development also dealt a blow to the faction led by former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr Tanimu Turaki (SAN), which adopted former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Last week, Mr Turaki’s faction claimed it manually submitted the names of its presidential candidate to INEC after failing to obtain an access code for electronic submission.

According to Mr Mohammed, the development vindicates the party’s leadership after months of claims that internal disputes would prevent it from fielding candidates.

“This development has effectively laid to rest the sustained misinformation and propaganda by those who desperately sought to convince Nigerians that the PDP would not field a presidential candidate.

“For months, these unfounded claims were deployed as a campaign tool to mislead Nigerians, discourage our supporters and create doubts about the future of our party.

“Today, the facts have prevailed, the law has taken its course, and the PDP has once again been vindicated.”

Party thanks supporters, institutions

The party expressed appreciation to its members and supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora for remaining steadfast during what it described as a difficult period.

Mr Mohammed said, “We must express our profound appreciation to millions of Nigerians and commend the resilience and patience of our loyal party members across the world who kept faith with the PDP and refused to be swayed by deliberate falsehoods.

“Your confidence in the PDP and in our leadership has inspired us to remain focused on rebuilding the party and preparing it for victory in 2027.”

The PDP also commended INEC, the judiciary and security agencies for what it described as their commitment to the rule of law and constitutional order.

“The leadership of the party extends its appreciation to the Independent National Electoral Commission, the judiciary and all relevant security agencies for remaining committed to upholding the rule of law and for discharging their constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour,” the statement added.

Reconciliation, unity remain priority

Reaffirming its commitment to reconciliation, the party appealed to aggrieved members to return, saying unity remains essential to reclaiming political power.

At least nine people have been killed and 28 others, including four children, injured after Russian missile strikes hit Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, causing widespread destruction to residential buildings and triggering multiple fires.

According to the United Nations, June was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022.

The latest attack comes as Russia and Ukraine continue to intensify cross-border strikes, while Kyiv presses its Western allies for stronger air defence support.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said the Russian attack struck five districts of Kyiv, leaving at least nine people dead and 28 injured.

Earlier, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned residents of an incoming ballistic missile attack.

“Explosions in the city. Kyiv is under ballistic missile attack. Stay in shelters!” Mr Klitschko wrote on Telegram.

Journalists in the city reported hearing more than 10 explosions in quick succession, with the blasts setting off car alarms across several neighbourhoods.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has reiterated that the deployment of the Armed Forces during elections should remain an exceptional measure, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force is the constitutionally designated lead agency for election security under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known while delivering a keynote address at a seminar organised by the Army War College Nigeria in Abuja. The seminar focused on election security, civil-military relations and the legal framework guiding the conduct of democratic elections in Nigeria.

Represented by the Commission’s Director of Legal Services, Al-Hassan Umar, Prof. Amupitan commended the Armed Forces for their patriotism and commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity but maintained that their role during elections should be supportive, protective and strictly within constitutional limits.

Prof. Amupitan said, “As both a teacher and practitioner of law, permit me to begin by reaffirming the constitutional framework governing election security in Nigeria.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly delineates the responsibilities of institutions involved in the electoral process. INEC is constitutionally mandated to organise, undertake and supervise elections, while the Nigeria Police Force remains the lead agency for election security under the framework of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.”

According to him, military involvement in election security is not intended to be routine but is only justified where prevailing security conditions require military assistance to civil authorities.

“The role of the Armed Forces is exceptional rather than routine. Their deployment arises only where prevailing security conditions require military support in aid of the civil authorities and strictly in accordance with the Constitution and other applicable laws.

“Accordingly, the Armed Forces perform a supportive rather than supervisory role, protective rather than political, and one firmly anchored in constitutional responsibility.”

INEC seeks credible, inclusive elections

Prof. Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to conducting elections that are transparent, inclusive, technologically driven, professionally administered and fully compliant with the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

He said the commission would continue to prioritise inclusivity by making adequate provisions for persons with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups.

“In this regard, we look forward to the continued support of the Armed Forces and other security agencies in ensuring that election-day security is discharged with professionalism, restraint and respect for the dignity and fundamental rights of every citizen.

At least 34 workers have been killed following a methane gas explosion at a coal mine in Pakistan's southern Balochistan province, according to the provincial disaster management authority.

In a statement issued early Friday, the Balochistan Provincial Disaster Management Authority confirmed that 34 bodies had been recovered from the site.

The explosion occurred on Thursday at a coal mine near Quetta, the capital of the resource-rich province, triggering a large-scale rescue operation that continued into the night.

“According to information received from the deployed teams, 34 dead bodies have been recovered,” the agency said.

It added that rescue teams were still searching for other miners believed to be trapped underground, although authorities did not disclose how many workers were inside the mine when the explosion occurred.

Rescue operation continues

The agency said a joint rescue operation remained underway to locate and recover any remaining miners trapped after the blast.

Officials said the explosion was caused by a build-up of methane gas inside the mine, a common hazard in underground coal mining operations.

Mining accidents are frequent in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan, where poor safety standards and hazardous working conditions have contributed to repeated tragedies.

The Anambra State Government and key stakeholders have agreed on a coordinated plan to increase the enrolment of women of child-bearing age and other vulnerable groups into the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) scheme by strengthening community mobilisation and addressing barriers created by the mandatory National Identification Number (NIN) requirement.

The commitment was reached during a roundtable discussion organised under the Strengthening Public Accountability for Results and Knowledge (SPARK 2) project, supported by the International Budget Partnership, in Nnewi.

The engagement brought together representatives of government agencies, civil society organisations, traditional institutions and community groups to identify practical solutions to improving access to health insurance.

Participants included officials of the National Identity Management Commission, National Health Insurance Authority, National Orientation Agency, Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Anambra State Town Unions Council, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities and Community Development Network.

Stakeholders target wider enrolment

During the meeting, stakeholders resolved to leverage the ongoing ward-to-ward NIN registration exercise to mobilise women of reproductive age and other vulnerable residents for both NIN registration and enrolment into the state health insurance scheme.

The Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, Dr Obiageli Uchebo, identified the compulsory NIN requirement as one of the biggest obstacles preventing indigent residents from accessing healthcare under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund.

Dr Uchebo said, “It is observed that beneficiaries must possess NIN before they can be enrolled through ASHIA, yet many vulnerable people, including children, elderly persons and indigent residents, do not have one.

“The roundtable provided an opportunity for government institutions and community leaders to jointly develop practical solutions that would expand healthcare access for vulnerable populations.”

The Director of Justice Development and Peace Caritas, Nnewi, Rev. Fr. Benedict Okolo, urged participants to openly identify challenges and propose workable recommendations that would improve maternal and child healthcare through wider health insurance coverage.

The Executive Director of the Civil Rights Council, Mr Okey Onyeka, described the meeting as an opportunity to jointly tackle barriers affecting pregnant women and nursing mothers.

The Executive Director of the Social and Integral Development Centre, Mrs Ugochi Ehiahuruike, commended the commitment demonstrated by participating agencies and community leaders, expressing optimism that stronger collaboration would significantly improve health insurance enrolment among women of child-bearing age.

SPARK 2 project focuses on accountability

Introducing the SPARK 2 project, Programme Officer of JDPC Nnewi, Mr Onyekachi Ololo, said the initiative is designed to strengthen accountability and improve primary healthcare delivery in six local government areas of Anambra State.

Mr Ololo said, “Findings from community engagements showed that the NIN requirement remained one of the biggest barriers to health insurance enrolment, making the stakeholders’ dialogue necessary.

“The project is also working with government and community actors to strengthen referrals from traditional birth attendants, build the capacity of Ward Development Committees and sustain community advocacy through regular town hall meetings.”

The representative of the Acting Executive Secretary of ASPHCDA, Dr Ngozi Okeke, urged Ward Development Committee chairmen to intensify sensitisation in their communities, especially among women of child-bearing age, noting that the benefits of health insurance were enormous.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday officially took delivery of two long-awaited surveillance aircraft, one year after announcing plans to acquire the security assets to strengthen intelligence gathering and enhance the state's security architecture.

Mr Makinde, speaking shortly after the aircraft landed at the Ibadan Airport in Ibadan, the state capital, described the development as the fulfilment of a strategic security initiative conceived to complement security personnel on the ground across the state's vast territory.

"The decision to procure the surveillance aircraft was informed by Oyo State's expansive landmass and the need for rapid aerial intelligence to support security operations.

"When we decided to purchase this surveillance aircraft, it was because of the sheer landmass and the size of our state. We knew that we had to complement the boots on the ground.

"Although the security challenges that later confronted the state, including the recent abduction incidents, were unforeseen, the government's investment in aerial surveillance had proved to be timely.

"We didn't know what was going to happen. I've seen people criticise us and ask, 'Where is the aircraft?'

"But we planned for it so that we would be able to cover as much of the state's landmass as possible within the shortest time," Mr Makinde stated.

Expressing satisfaction that the aircraft had finally arrived, Mr Makinde reaffirmed his administration's commitment to taking decisions that serve the best interests of residents.

"I'm glad that now it's here, and I believe we will always do what is right in the interest of our people.

"In an atmosphere of insecurity, you can hardly do anything. Now, our children are back, our teachers are back, and we're moving on with our plans," he added.

Aircraft to begin operations immediately

The governor disclosed that the aircraft would become operational immediately, revealing that the state had entered into a partnership with the Nigerian Air Force to ensure their effective deployment.

"We're hitting the ground running. You can see the aircraft were flown by Air Force pilots. We have negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Air Force, and we will be working together," Mr Makinde said.

He assured residents that his administration would continue to prioritise their safety and welfare.

"My message to the people of Oyo is that their government will always be there to serve them," Mr Makinde said.

Earlier on Tuesday, while announcing the arrival of the two surveillance aircraft, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, said in a statement that the development marked another milestone in the state's efforts to strengthen security operations.

"The arrival of the aircraft marks another step in the state's efforts to strengthen security operations through improved intelligence gathering and aerial surveillance," Mr Oyelade said.

Mr Oyelade recalled that the government announced the purchase of the two surveillance aircraft on 8 July 2025, as part of measures aimed at enhancing the capacity of security agencies to tackle emerging security challenges across the state.

He added that Mr Makinde confirmed on 18 July 2026, that the aircraft had arrived in Nigeria and were undergoing reassembly at the Nigerian Air Force's hangar in Lagos.

The commissioner also noted that the state government had assured residents about a week earlier that the aircraft would arrive in Oyo before the end of July, adding that the latest development fulfilled that commitment.

"The aircraft are expected to support security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps and other relevant formations, in monitoring criminal activities and improving response efforts across the state," Mr Oyelade said.

Aircraft to support intelligence, rapid response

Government sources told The PUNCH that the surveillance aircraft would work in synergy with existing security agencies, the Oyo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, and other intelligence units to monitor forests, border communities and identified flashpoints across the state.

The 15 May 2026, abduction of 39 students and seven teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area triggered widespread outrage and increased pressure on the government to strengthen surveillance, intelligence gathering and rapid-response capabilities.

Mr Makinde subsequently said the incident reinforced the need for enhanced aerial surveillance, noting that although the decision to procure the aircraft had been taken before the abduction, the attack underscored the importance of the investment.

The arrival of the state's surveillance aircraft forms part of the broader security strategy adopted after the abduction to improve aerial reconnaissance, support intelligence-led operations and complement ground security personnel across Oyo's expansive territory.

The US Senate has confirmed Jay Clayton as President Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence, putting a permanent chief in charge of the country's intelligence agencies as the administration revives disputed claims about the 2020 presidential election ahead of the midterm elections.

Senators voted 51-47 on Tuesday to confirm Mr. Clayton's appointment, with all Democratic senators voting against the nomination.

“Jay is outstanding in every way, and will do a spectacular job as Director!” Mr. Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social shortly after the vote.

Mr. Clayton, a former securities regulator and federal prosecutor, succeeds Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned last month, and takes charge of an 18-agency intelligence community that has experienced leadership changes and staff reductions.

Mr. Clayton's appointment comes amid growing concerns that the Trump administration is drawing national security agencies into renewed efforts to challenge the outcome of the 2020 presidential election and cast doubt on the integrity of future elections.

Earlier this month, Mr. Trump used a televised White House address to release declassified intelligence which he claimed showed Chinese interference, while again asserting that the 2020 election was stolen.

Mr. Clayton replaces acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte, a Trump ally whose temporary leadership drew criticism from lawmakers in both parties due to his lack of intelligence experience.

Mr. Pulte also used his position as federal housing regulator to refer several of Mr. Trump's political opponents for possible prosecution and oversaw significant staff reductions at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Hours before Mr. Clayton's confirmation, Mr. Pulte announced that another round of layoffs would reduce staffing at the intelligence coordinating body by about 30 per cent within weeks.

Democrats voice concerns

Although Democrats initially viewed Mr. Clayton as a more conventional choice than Mr. Pulte, many opposed his confirmation after his Senate hearing.

When repeatedly asked whether former President Joe Biden won the 2020 election, Mr. Clayton declined to give a direct answer, saying only that Mr. Biden had been “certified” as the winner.

“I’m not an election denier,” Mr. Clayton told senators, without directly answering the question.

Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner said he left the confirmation hearing with concerns about Mr. Clayton's independence.

“I came away from his confirmation hearing with serious reservations about whether he would be willing to stand up to political pressure,” Mr. Warner said.

“I sincerely hope he proves those concerns unfounded, because the Intelligence Community deserves steadier leadership than it has received in recent months,” he added.

The American Bar Association has condemned what it described as increasing personal attacks and intimidation directed at judges, warning that such rhetoric threatens judicial independence and erodes public confidence in the rule of law.

The ABA criticised growing personal attacks on judges by government officials, saying the trend poses a serious threat to judicial independence and the rule of law amid escalating tensions between the judiciary and the administration of President Donald Trump over court rulings on key policies.

In a statement published on its website on Tuesday, the association urged public officials to uphold civil discourse and respect the independence of the courts.

“The American Bar Association strongly condemns personal attacks on judges by government officials and calls on all public officials, lawyers and citizens to reject rhetoric that targets judges or seeks to delegitimize the judiciary because of disagreement with a particular decision,” the statement read.

It added, “Words matter. Public officials have a responsibility to engage in civil discourse that respects the independence and integrity of our courts.”

The latest statement follows a similar warning issued by the ABA in March after US Chief Justice John Roberts cautioned that “personally directed hostility is dangerous” and had “gone too far.”

At the time, the association said there had been “an alarming pattern of rhetoric targeting individual jurists with labels like ‘crooked’ and ‘out of control’,” warning that “such language does not critique a legal outcome; it seeks to intimidate individual judges. It undermines the public’s faith in the impartiality of the courts.”

Political analyst, former Labour Party Caretaker Chairman in Kaduna State, and Kaduna Central Senatorial candidate, Dr. Yusuf Solomon Danbaki, has backed the position of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that rising poverty is fuelling insecurity across Nigeria.

Dr. Danbaki also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic and security policies, warning that efforts to address insecurity would continue to fall short unless poverty is tackled.

He made the remarks on Monday on VOP This Morning’s Programme On Voice of the People Television, where he argued that administrative reforms such as the creation of state police would have limited impact without addressing widespread economic hardship.

"I agree with Mr. Obi that the increase in poverty is a major cause of insecurity, and if this administration is not doing anything to reduce poverty, then even the state police cannot be able to manage the insecurity that we're up for in the coming years," Dr. Danbaki said.

Dr. Danbaki's comments come amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the country's security challenges, Dr. Danbaki said the current approach had failed to produce the expected results, stressing that the government must adopt more effective strategies.

"You cannot continue to do the same thing and expect a different result. The policy of this administration since inception has not yielded the desired result, and something ought to be done drastically," he said.

While supporting the idea of state police, Dr. Danbaki criticised the pace of its implementation.

"State police... might bring the desired change, because when you bring security closer to the people, definitely you will get a better result. But they've been very, very slow about it," he added.

Backs Obi's leadership style

Commenting on recent remarks by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, regarding divisions within the ruling establishment, Dr. Danbaki said the internal disagreements were exposing issues previously hidden from the public.

"He is one of them, and now that they are falling apart, we are getting to hear things that we do not know before," Dr. Danbaki said.

"One thing he said and one thing he's known for is being frank — he says it as it is, not minding who will be offended. So I agree with 90 percent of what he said, particularly on the fact that the ticket to defeat the ruling party is that of Mr. Obi."

Asked whether Mr. Obi's pledge to personally lead security operations as Commander-in-Chief was realistic, Dr. Danbaki expressed confidence in the former Anambra State governor's leadership style.

"I think it is realistic. Mr. Obi has been a man leading from the front in everything he does... So I think if given the opportunity as president, he will do exactly that," he said.

Former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has broken his silence over the controversy surrounding his commercial partnership with a Russian brand, insisting the agreement was purely commercial and unrelated to politics amid speculation linking him with the Italy national team coaching job.

As reported on X on Monday by football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Mr Pirlo said he deliberately remained silent in recent days out of respect for the Italian Football Federation and everyone involved in the process of appointing the national team's head coach.

"I chose to remain silent in recent days out of respect for the Italian Football Federation and everyone involved," Mr Pirlo said.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup winner said he had always conducted himself professionally throughout his playing and coaching career, respecting the laws of every country where he worked and honouring his contractual obligations.

"Throughout my career, both as a player and as a coach, I have always worked in full compliance with the laws of the countries in which I have been employed and with the contracts I have signed," Mr Pirlo said.

Partnership 'purely commercial'

Addressing the partnership at the centre of the controversy, Mr Pirlo explained that the agreement originated during his coaching spell in the United Arab Emirates and was solely commercial and sporting in nature.

He rejected suggestions that the deal reflected his political beliefs.

"To attribute a political meaning to this agreement is to attribute opinions to me that I have never expressed and that do not belong to me," Mr Pirlo said.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso says the club is beginning the new season with "good energy" as he looks to restore the Blues to the top of English football, though he declined to set specific targets for his first campaign in charge.

Mr Alonso, who officially assumed duty on 1 July, will take charge of his first competitive match on Tuesday when Chelsea face Western Sydney Wanderers in Sydney.

The Spaniard inherits a side that finished 10th in the Premier League last season and failed to qualify for European competition. Chelsea last won the league title in 2017 under Italian manager Antonio Conte.

Speaking on Monday, Mr Alonso expressed satisfaction with the attitude of his players and the progress made during pre-season following several new signings, including Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

"We want to build a competitive team. We are in that process. We have great quality, great talent," Mr Alonso said.

"We need to know what it takes to compete in the Premier League, and we want to have a squad with the right balance between quality and mentality.

"But I think that we are starting the new season with good energy, that's going to be important."

Mr Alonso earned widespread acclaim after leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double during the 2023/24 season.

However, his spell at Real Madrid was short-lived. Appointed last year, Mr Alonso left the Spanish club in January after just seven months in charge.

Flexible tactical approach

Known for his possession-based style and successful 3-4-2-1 formation at Bayer Leverkusen, Mr Alonso said he would remain tactically flexible rather than overhaul Chelsea's playing style.

"We will be flexible in our tactics, in our approaches, game plans," he said.

"It's not that I'm changing everything. It's about updating. It's about developing something that they have done with new concepts that each manager has.

"But the good thing is that many things that I like they have already done. So now it's about changing or updating a few other things."

'Success will take time'

With several managers having failed to return Chelsea to Premier League glory since their last title triumph, pressure is already mounting on Mr Alonso to end the club's trophy drought.

Despite expectations, the 44-year-old manager refused to define what would constitute a successful first season.

"I don't want to talk too early about what's our goal," Mr Alonso said.

"We want to be as high as possible, and for that we need to work hard. We need to develop this team with new players, with new ideas, but sometimes it takes longer, sometimes it happens quicker.

The All Progressives Congress has drafted former Osun State Deputy Governor, Iyiola Omisore, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, into its 276-member National Campaign Council for the 15 August 2026, Osun State governorship election.

The campaign council, unveiled on Sunday by the APC National Working Committee, will be chaired by Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum, Hope Uzodimma, and will be inaugurated on Tuesday, 28 July, at the Transcorp Hilton Event Centre, Abuja.

The announcement was contained in a notice signed by the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru.

The inclusion of Mr. Omisore is expected to put to rest recent speculation about his commitment to the APC following the defection of some of his close political associates to the Accord Party in support of Governor Ademola Adeleke's re-election bid.

The rumours gathered momentum after Mr. Omisore was absent from the APC governorship campaign flag-off in Ile-Ife, fuelling claims that he had distanced himself from the party.

According to the notice, Mr. Uzodimma will serve as chairman of the council, while Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas will serve as co-chairmen.

The President's Senior Special Assistant on Political and Other Matters, Ibrahim Masari, was named deputy chairman, while Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin will serve as secretary.

The statement read, "Mr. Uzodimma will chair the National Campaign Council, while Yobe State Governor, Mr. Buni; Senate President Mr. Akpabio; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Abbas, will serve as co-chairmen.

"Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters, Mr. Masari, will serve as Deputy Chairman, while the Deputy Senate President, Senator Mr. Jibrin, will function as Secretary of the council.

"The council comprises governors, members of the National Working Committee, principal officers of the National Assembly, ministers, federal and state lawmakers, party leaders and other stakeholders drawn from across the country."

Mr. Basiru added that specialised sub-committees had also been constituted to coordinate the campaign.

They include Election Planning and Management, Finance and Resource Mobilisation, Contact, Grassroots Engagement and Mobilisation, Logistics and Campaign Management, Monitoring and Compliance, Protocol, Media and Publicity, Security, Youth Mobilisation, Special Interest (Persons with Disabilities) Mobilisation, Women's Mobilisation, and Secretariat.

"The inauguration of the National Campaign Council and its Sub-Committees is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the Transcorp Hilton Event Centre, Abuja, at 12:00 noon," the notice added.

The APC is fielding former Commissioner for Finance, Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, who emerged as the party's consensus governorship candidate after consultations among key stakeholders.

Mr. Oyebamiji will face the incumbent governor, Mr. Adeleke, in what is expected to be a keenly contested election widely seen as a political test ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Omisore remains loyal to APC

Reacting to Mr. Omisore's appointment, the Chairman of the Omisore Campaign Organisation, Mr. Ajibola Famurewa, dismissed suggestions that the former deputy governor was drifting away from the APC, saying he would accept the assignment as a loyal party member.

"I have not spoken with Otunba Mr. Omisore, and I have not seen the list too. If Otunba Mr. Omisore's name is there, as a former deputy governor, senator, and national secretary of the party, it is the tradition to list people of that calibre in the campaign council, especially from Osun State.

"That is the tradition of the party. On whether he will accept or not, as a party man, he will. It depends on the assignment given to him within the council.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is facing criticism over his alleged role ahead of the 2027 general election, after the Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum accused him of secretly working to secure President Bola Tinubu's re-election.

Responding to the claims, Mr Obasanjo's former Political Adviser, Dr Akin Osuntokun, dismissed the allegations as unfounded, insisting that Mr Obasanjo remains one of the principal forces behind the opposition alliance.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE Television on Sunday, Mr Osuntokun said Mr Obasanjo personally brokered the alliance between Mr Obi and Mr Kwankwaso and continues to support their joint presidential ticket.

"If you can say that Obasanjo is supporting any ticket, it is the Peter Obi–Kwankwaso ticket. As a matter of fact, he is the principal sponsor of that ticket," Mr Osuntokun declared.

The latest disagreement over Mr Obasanjo's political positioning comes only days after the former president reignited his long-running feud with African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Abubakar Atiku,  by alleging in a public letter that the former vice president supported attempts to remove him from office while he served as president.

Mr Atiku, through his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, rejected the allegation, insisting that his opposition to Mr Obasanjo's failed third-term bid remains one of the defining moments of Nigeria's democratic history.

Rejecting claims that the former president was secretly backing President Tinubu, Mr Osuntokun described the allegation as illogical.

"How do you then suggest that he is secretly working for Tinubu? It does not make sense to me.

"I think that claim is absolute bunkum. The evidence is in the public domain. Obasanjo is playing a major role in supporting the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket. He was the one who brought the two men together," he said.

Yoruba Ronu accuses Obasanjo

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its President, Akin Malaolu, the Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum alleged that Mr Obasanjo's recent political interventions were carefully designed to weaken the opposition rather than strengthen it.

The group pointed to Mr Obasanjo's recent letter to former Ogun State Governor, Segun Osoba, in which the former president alleged that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar mobilised the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na'Abba, in an attempt to impeach him during his administration.

According to the forum, the letter was not merely a personal attack on Mr Atiku but part of a broader strategy to destabilise the opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

"What many perceive as an attack on Atiku is, in reality, a deliberate assault on the opposition parties in Nigeria," Mr Malaolu said.

Forum questions Na'Abba reference

The group also criticised Mr Obasanjo for invoking the name of the late Mr Na'Abba, arguing that the former Speaker could no longer defend himself against the allegation.

"By dragging the name of Ghali Umar Na'Abba into his allegation, Obasanjo knows too well that the late Speaker is incapable of a right of reply.

"To respond to Obasanjo, he has to be resurrected from the dead, which the former President knows is impossible," the statement read.

Alleged support for Tinubu

The forum further alleged that Mr Obasanjo's public support for the presidential aspirations of Mr Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso was merely a political smokescreen intended to conceal his alleged support for President Tinubu's second-term ambition.

"By this letter, Obasanjo has only confirmed speculations that he is working for his kinsman, President Bola Tinubu, to actualise his second-term ambition," Mr Malaolu stated.

The group claimed that before the opposition coalition settled on its political platform, consultations were held with several national leaders, including Mr Obasanjo, but alleged that the former president was determined to ensure Mr Obi emerged as the coalition's presidential candidate.

It further alleged that when those efforts failed, Mr Obasanjo facilitated political realignments that eventually resulted in Mr Obi and Mr Kwankwaso contesting on the NDC platform.

The forum also alleged, without providing evidence, that Mr Obasanjo was collaborating with a member of President Tinubu's family to build political structures that would aid the President's re-election.

'He brought the ticket together'

When pressed on whether Mr Obasanjo directly negotiated the alliance, Mr Osuntokun maintained there was no ambiguity about the former president's role.

"Yes, of course. That's what I said. He brokered the ticket between Obi and Kwankwaso. Both of them are quite close to him. It is a ticket that makes sense and has the potential to make a significant impact in the 2027 election.

"I can tell you for free that he was the one who brought the ticket together," he added.

Mr Osuntokun also disclosed that discussions on a possible Obi-Kwankwaso partnership predated the current political arrangement.

"Kwankwaso could have teamed up with Obi four years ago. I remember him saying that if they had agreed then, they would probably have had an arrangement in which they would each spend one term in office, and Kwankwaso would now have been the beneficiary," he added.

As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, major opposition figures have intensified consultations and alliance-building efforts aimed at presenting a formidable challenge to the APC.

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a soldier, Private Mohammed Yusuf, who was recently declared wanted over his alleged involvement in the illegal supply of military accoutrements to terrorist and other criminal elements.

The Army, in a statement on Sunday, said the suspect was arrested by troops of 7 Provost Group, Operation Hadin Kai, at Jidari Bus Stop, Maiduguri, while allegedly attempting to flee to the Republic of Cameroon.

The Acting Military Information Officer of the Northeast Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Muhammed Goni, said preliminary investigations revealed that Private Yusuf absconded from his unit on 7 July 2026, before relocating to Maiduguri, where he reportedly went into hiding.

The statement read:

"Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have arrested a soldier recently declared wanted by the Nigerian Army for his alleged involvement in the illegal supply of military accoutrements to terrorist and other criminal elements, in a sustained effort to dismantle criminal support network."

According to Capt. Goni, the suspect, 23NA/84/1939 Private Mohammed Yusuf of the Nigerian Army Ordnance Kits Factory, Lagos, was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. on 25 July 2026, by troops of the 7 Provost Group following credible human intelligence.

He explained that Private Yusuf had been declared wanted by the Nigerian Army on 23 July 2026, over the same allegations.

"The suspect was apprehended at Jidari Bus Stop, Maiduguri, while allegedly attempting to flee to the Republic of Cameroon," Capt. Goni stated.

According to Capt. Goni, preliminary investigations showed that Private Yusuf absconded from his unit and later relocated to Maiduguri.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect absconded from his unit on 7 July 2026 and subsequently relocated to Maiduguri, where he reportedly went into hiding in the Gomari Costain area of Jere Local Government Area with the assistance of an associate," Capt. Goni added.

Investigation ongoing

The Army spokesman said the arrest demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and reaffirmed the Nigerian Army's commitment to holding its personnel accountable for actions that undermine military ethics, discipline and national security.

He disclosed that Private Yusuf is currently in the custody of the 7 Provost Group, where further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of his alleged activities and identify any accomplices.

Army reaffirms commitment

Capt. Goni stressed that there is no safe haven for anyone supporting terrorism or any form of criminality, regardless of status.

He reaffirmed the military's commitment to professionalism, accountability and the highest standards of integrity in the conduct of ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu is fully committed to ending insecurity across the country, expressing confidence that the challenge would soon become a thing of the past.

Mr Akpabio gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving members of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, led by its National President, Dr. Lima Ahmed, during a courtesy visit to the National Assembly in Abuja.

The Senate President's remarks were contained in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom.

Nigeria has continued to face security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and communal violence, with several states witnessing deadly attacks and mass abductions in recent months.

Speaking during the visit, Mr Akpabio said the recent rescue of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State reflected the Federal Government's commitment to improving security.

"As Nigerians, we are all aware of the insecurity challenges that we are currently facing. All I can say is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is giving the situation its utmost attention, and that is what led to the recent release of the school children that were abducted in Oyo State.

"The current administration is doing a whole lot. I can assure you that very soon, the issue of security would be a thing of the past. Don't rely on what you hear or see on social media. They are not a true reflection of what is happening in our country," Mr Akpabio said.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has said she will wear an Akwete wrapper if President Bola Tinubu is re-elected for a second term, praising the traditional fabric for its quality and cultural significance.

She made the remark during her maiden visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Abia State on Tuesday, where she also announced a ₦2 billion donation to support the revitalisation of the historic weaving industry.

Speaking during the visit, the First Lady described Akwete fabric as soft, breathable and a symbol of Nigeria's rich cultural heritage.

"If God brings my husband in a second time, I'll be wearing a buba and wrapper made from Akwete. I am going to be wearing that because it is very soft breathable cotton.

"I saw young people in their family doing the exact thing. So it is a craft transferred from generation."

Commends women preserving the craft

Oluremi Tinubu praised the women of the cooperative for preserving the centuries-old weaving tradition despite economic challenges.

She encouraged Nigerians to embrace traditional Igbo attire made from Akwete fabric as a way of supporting local artisans and sustaining indigenous craftsmanship.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has declared 31 companies as preferred winners of 37 oil and gas blocks under the 2025 Licensing Round, warning successful bidders to complete all post-award requirements within 90 days or risk forfeiting the assets.

The announcement was made on Tuesday at the conclusion of the commercial bid conference in Abuja, bringing to an end an eight-month licensing process.

Speaking after the exercise, the Commission Chief Executive of the NUPRC, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, disclosed that members of the evaluation committee were subjected to repeated threats and intimidation throughout the licensing process.

She said the pressure continued until the eve of the commercial bid opening but stressed that the evaluation team remained committed to ensuring a transparent and credible exercise.

"It has been a journey… If you have been told anything contrary to the fact that this process was going to be credible and transparent, do not believe it," Mrs Eyesan said.

Commending the evaluation team, she added:

"The evaluators have worked tirelessly since June 12. They have been inundated with calls and with threats, serious threats, but they stood their ground. Up until yesterday, we were still threatened, but we stood our ground to say that the times have changed. Nigeria is really open for business."

Mrs Eyesan also said President Bola Tinubu directed the commission to ensure transparency throughout the licensing process and thanked the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) for monitoring the exercise.

31 firms emerge winners

According to the commission, 143 companies submitted about 200 bids for 37 oil and gas blocks out of the 50 assets offered during the licensing round.

The successful firms include SSonic Petroleum Limited, CFP Pipeline and Flowlines, Dutchford E&P Limited, Attabanson Global Company Limited, Rosem Energy Limited, Pivot-GIS Limited, Network E&P, Asharami, LexOil, BVOF, Gupsco Energy Limited, Saratoga, Volante, Concept-Reel Petroleum Services Limited, Clinton Oil Field, Nuway Oaklane Limited, Ramec Italia, Blueridge E&P, Up Energies Limited, AYM Shafa, Blackrock Holdings Limited, Funtay Integrated Business Limited, Riparian Development and Production Limited, Nikstallis, Stardeep Petroleum, Dakoda & U Limited, Southborne Oil and Gas Limited, Lanaka Petroleum, Highban Resources Limited and Eyre Energy Limited.

The commission clarified that the companies have only emerged as preferred bidders and will receive Petroleum Prospecting Licences (PPLs) only after meeting all statutory requirements under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

90-day deadline

Mrs Eyesan urged the successful firms to begin the post-award process immediately.

"These firms will only be presented final awards after the payment of the appropriate signature bonus and the approval of the Minister of Petroleum Resources in line with the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021."

She warned that any company that fails to fulfil the required conditions within 90 days would lose its allocation, allowing the commission to invite reserve bidders.

The Federal Government has warned of a possible flood disaster in 17 states, as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) issued a seven-day flood advisory covering 21 July to 27 July 2026.

In the National Flood Advisory (Alert No. NFA-2026-200) issued on Tuesday, NIHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, listed the affected states as Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.

The agency said the alert followed rising water levels at key river monitoring stations, increasing the likelihood of localised flooding along river channels and floodplains.

According to him, river levels at Saminaka on the Karam River, Waya Dam site on the Waya River and Amber on the Amber River have exceeded watch and warning thresholds.

The New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) has announced the upload of a placeholder presidential candidate on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying the move complies with electoral guidelines.

The party also disclosed that its original logo has been restored on the INEC portal, describing the development as a major victory in its leadership dispute and a confirmation of the legitimacy of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by its National Chairman, Dr. Major Agbo.

The NNPP has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership crisis, with rival factions laying claim to the party's leadership, identity and official logo ahead of preparations for the 2027 elections.

An independent check confirmed that the party's original logo, symbolised by a basket of fruits on the Nigerian map, now appears above the party's name on the INEC portal.

Addressing journalists on Monday, Mr Agbo said the electoral commission had replaced what he described as the party's "fake" logo with its authentic emblem.

"We are pleased to formally announce that the logo and identity of our party have been fully restored by INEC. Our dear and very cherished 'Basket of Fruits on Nigerian Map' is now back on the INEC portal," he said.

According to him, the development reinforces the legal and institutional integrity of the NNPP.

"This development reaffirms the legal and institutional integrity of the NNPP and further strengthens our determination to continue building a formidable political platform for national renewal."

Agbo urged Nigerians to verify the change on the INEC portal, insisting that those who attempted to hijack the party had been defeated.

Presidential placeholder uploaded

The NNPP chairman also disclosed that the party had uploaded a placeholder presidential candidate to the INEC portal in line with the electoral timetable.

He added that the party successfully completed the upload of its National Assembly candidates, including placeholders, across the country.

355 National Assembly candidates submitted

According to Mr Agbo, the exercise was concluded despite time constraints caused by what he described as the delayed recognition of the party's legitimate leadership.

"In addition, our party has completed the upload of its National Assembly members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

"Despite the time constraints due to the late recognition of the legitimate National Working Committee under my leadership, our Situation Room was able to upload a total of 355 National Assembly candidates, including placeholders."

The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has called on the Federal Government to explain what it described as a significant disparity in the allocation of about N8.05 billion for church and mosque projects in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, saying the imbalance raises concerns over fairness and equal treatment.

The association said it was not opposed to government support for religious projects but insisted that such funding should comply with the constitutional principles of equity, transparency and justice.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, the NCA said reports indicated that approximately N1.91 billion was allocated to seven church-related projects, while about N6.14 billion was earmarked for 52 mosque-related projects in the 2026 budget.

According to the association, the disparity has reinforced concerns among many Christians over what it described as a pattern of unequal treatment and selective implementation of government policies.

Calls for fairness

Mr Hayab said persistent inequality in government decisions continues to fuel division and distrust among Nigerians.

"How long will Nigerians continue to read stories that expose the hypocrisy of our leaders?

"The partiality, lack of equity and unequal treatment of citizens by government and political leaders are among the major factors responsible for division, distrust, segregation and the absence of genuine unity and love among Nigerians," he said.

He added that while Christians have continued to exercise restraint in the interest of national peace and unity, successive governments have often mistaken that patience for weakness.

Constitution guarantees equality

The NCA argued that the Nigerian Constitution recognises all citizens as equal before the law and urged the government to avoid actions that could create the impression of preferential treatment for any religious group.

"Our constitution recognises every Nigerian as equal before the law, while the teachings of all religions discourage unfair treatment of children, women, family members and fellow human beings.

"Government should, therefore, not be seen to promote policies that suggest preferential treatment for one religious group over another," Hayab stated.

Demand for explanation

The association stressed that its position should not be interpreted as opposition to Islam, Christianity or collaboration between government and faith-based organisations.

Instead, it said public funds allocated to religious projects should be distributed transparently and fairly to avoid perceptions of bias.

"NCA is challenging the Federal Government to explain these abnormalities. Government should not establish a system that creates division among citizens or gives the impression that one religious community is more important than another.

"Instead, it should initiate programmes and policies that unite Nigerians and strengthen our collective national identity," the statement added.

Isaac Fayose has urged his elder brother, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, to decline his appointment as Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) Board, arguing that the position is beneath his political standing.

Mr Isaac made the remarks in a video posted on his Instagram page on Monday while reacting to the Presidency's announcement appointing Ayo Fayose as chairman of the REA board alongside 25 others into the leadership of 10 federal agencies and commissions.

According to a statement by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Ayo Fayose will chair the REA board alongside Ahmadu Abubakar and Ilyasu Ibrahim Makinta as non-executive directors.

The statement also confirmed that the agency's Director-General, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, and three executive directors would retain their positions.

'You deserve a bigger role'

Reacting to the appointment, Isaac Fayose questioned why his brother was offered the chairmanship of a federal agency instead of what he described as more senior positions.

"They said they gave my brother DG, not a minister, not ambassador.

"They said they gave him DG, head of parastatal, chairman of a committee. They no give him minister, they no give him ambassador."

He also compared the appointment with that of Reno Omokri, whom he claimed was appointed ambassador.

"Even Reno Omokri sef, they gave him ambassador. They couldn't give my brother ambassador. So why just chairman of a parastatal?" he asked.

Links appointment to Peter Obi's visit

Mr Isaac suggested that the timing of the appointment was connected to the recent visit of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), to his residence.

"They gave my brother DG because Obi came on Saturday to visit me. So they said, no, we must enter that family," he said.

Peter Obi had visited Isaac Fayose days after the younger Fayose publicly threatened to withdraw his support before reaffirming his backing for the opposition candidate.

Recalls brother's earlier position

Mr Isaac also recalled that Ayo Fayose had previously insisted he would not seek or accept political appointments after leaving office.

According to him, the former governor had pledged to return to private business rather than become a minister, senator or director-general.

"My brother told me... when I leave Government House, I will not be a minister, I will not be DG, I will not be senator. I will face my business," he said.

He noted that Ayo Fayose was already financially successful before entering politics and described the latest appointment as a "Greek gift."

Advises brother to reject appointment

Mr Isaac congratulated his brother but urged him to hand the appointment to his son instead of accepting it.

"Congrats on your appointment. You better give your son. Please, don't use that kind of appointment. You are too big for that. Afobaje ni e," he said, describing his brother as a kingmaker.

Predicts opposition victory

Beyond the appointment, Isaac Fayose reiterated his confidence that the opposition would perform strongly in the 2027 general election.

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is scheduled to visit Abia State on Tuesday, 21 July, 2026, to celebrate the state's renowned Akwete weaving heritage.

The visit was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.

According to the statement, the First Lady will be received by Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Priscilla Otti.

A major highlight of the visit will be a tour of the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area, where Senator Tinubu will interact with master weavers and observe the centuries-old craft that has earned Akwete textiles international recognition.

"During the visit, Senator Tinubu will interact with master weavers and witness first-hand the craftsmanship that has made Akwete textiles globally recognised," the statement read.

Civic reception planned

Following the inspection, the First Lady and Governor Otti will proceed to the Akwete Central School Field for a grand civic reception scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.

According to the state government, the event is aimed at celebrating the historic visit while showcasing Akwete's rich cultural heritage to the nation.

The reception is expected to attract government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, stakeholders and residents.

Prince Okey Kanu said the Abia State Government has invited residents, particularly those in Ukwa East Local Government Area and neighbouring communities, to come out in large numbers to give the First Lady a warm reception.

Akwete cloth, which has been handwoven for centuries in Ukwa East Local Government Area, remains one of Nigeria's most celebrated traditional textiles and serves as a major source of livelihood for many women in the community.
