Politics13,000 Terrorists Killed, Terror-related Deaths Down By 81% Since 2015 — Preside by Deollaa(op): 10:41am On Jun 12
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has disclosed that more than 13,000 terrorists were neutralised in the past year, while terror-related deaths across Nigeria have declined by 81 per cent since 2015.

The President made the disclosure on Friday during his national broadcast marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration, his fourth Democracy Day address since assuming office in 2023.

According to Mr Tinubu, Nigeria’s security strategy has evolved from relying primarily on training partnerships with international allies to executing precision-targeted operations against terrorist groups.

“We have moved from training with our allies, the United States, France and other European countries, to precision targeting.

“In Arege, Borno State, we degraded ISWAP’s command centre.

“Terror-related deaths are down by 81 per cent since 2015. Over 13,000 terrorists have been neutralised in the past year,” the President stated.

Record security budget and recruitment drive

Mr Tinubu attributed the reported security gains to increased government investment in defence and law enforcement.

He disclosed that the 2026 national budget earmarked a record ₦5.41 trillion for defence and security, representing the highest security allocation in Nigeria’s history.

The President also highlighted the recruitment of over 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military personnel under what he described as a national security emergency response.

“Our administration is ever ready to do much more to secure our people,” he added.

CelebritiesEFCC Arraigns Blessing CEO Over Alleged N13m Medical Fraud by Deollaa(op): 9:58am On Jun 11
Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court, Lagos, has ordered the remand of popular social media influencer and self-styled relationship therapist, Ms Blessing Okoro, popularly known as Blessing CEO, in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service pending the commencement of her trial on 24 September 2026.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arraigned Ms Okoro on a six-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, forgery, possession of false documents, fraudulent conversion and retention of proceeds of alleged unlawful activities amounting to N13 million.

At the proceedings, EFCC counsel, Mr H.U. Kofanaisa, informed the court that the commission had filed a six-count charge against the defendant and requested that the charges be read to her for plea.

Following the reading of the charges, Ms Okoro pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Alleged false cancer diagnosis

According to the EFCC, Ms Okoro allegedly obtained N13 million from members of the public after claiming she had been diagnosed with a terminal illness involving a left breast lump and invasive ductal carcinoma with lobular features.

The anti-graft agency alleged that she used the claim to solicit financial assistance from unsuspecting members of the public.

The commission further accused her of forging a medical document titled "Histopathology/Cytopathology Report," purportedly issued by Xinus Medical Diagnostics, and presenting it as evidence of her medical condition.

Fraud, forgery and retention of funds alleged

The prosecution alleged that Ms Okoro knowingly possessed and used the purportedly forged medical report while disguising the source of the funds allegedly obtained from donors.

The EFCC also accused her of fraudulently converting the money to personal use and retaining the funds in her bank account despite allegedly knowing they were proceeds of unlawful activity.

Following her plea, the prosecution requested a trial date and asked the court to remand the defendant pending the commencement of proceedings.

SportsFIFA Defends Ticket Prices, Visa Handling Ahead Of 2026 World Cup Kick-off by Deollaa(op): 9:10am On Jun 11
FIFA has come under criticism over soaring ticket prices and visa-related controversies affecting some officials and supporters. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the organisation's preparations, insisting that ticket pricing remains competitive when compared with major sporting events in North America.

Speaking in Mexico City on Wednesday, Mr Infantino said FIFA had introduced lower-cost tickets in response to concerns from fans.

"Our entry price, which is 60 dollars, is the lowest entry price of any American sports playoff event. Our average ticket price, which is below 500 dollars, is also among the lowest," he said.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins on Thursday with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa at the historic Estadio Azteca, marking the start of the biggest World Cup tournament in football history.

The expanded competition, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, features 48 teams and will run for nearly six weeks before concluding with the final in East Rutherford on 19 July.

FIFA responds to Visa controversy

The governing body has also faced scrutiny following visa challenges involving several World Cup participants, including Somali referee Omar Artan, who was reportedly denied entry into the United States over security concerns.

Mr Infantino described the development as unfortunate but stressed that FIFA does not control immigration decisions made by sovereign nations.

"We work on everything and try to solve every issue. Sometimes it is important to remain calm and focus on finding solutions," he stated.

FIFA also highlighted the successful participation of Iran despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, describing it as evidence of football's ability to unite nations during difficult times.

Infantino praises Trump’s role

Mr Infantino also acknowledged the support of Donald Trump, arguing that the United States President played a significant role in ensuring the tournament could be staged successfully in America.

According to Mr Infantino, the scale and complexity of the World Cup required strong cooperation between FIFA and government authorities.

PoliticsJune 12: “atiku Supported Rotational Presidency Agreement” — Akume by Deollaa(op): 10:53am On Jun 10
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was among political leaders who supported the adoption of rotational presidency in Nigeria following the annulment of the 12 June 1993 presidential election.

According to Mr Akume, the annulment of the election won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola forced political leaders to take difficult decisions aimed at preserving national unity and strengthening democracy.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued by Mr Akume’s Media Aide, Yomi Odunuga, following a World Press Conference held in Abuja on Tuesday as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.

“Atiku was part of the agreement” — Akume

Mr Akume recalled that leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party met in Kaduna under the leadership of the late Chief Solomon Lar and Alhaji Adamu Ciroma to deliberate on Nigeria’s political future after the 12 June crisis.

According to him, the issue of rotational presidency generated intense debate before political leaders eventually agreed to alternate power between the North and South.

“It was a tough argument before the issue of rotational presidency was agreed on. At the end, we had to concede. We must do this.”

SportsMessi Scores On Injury Return As Argentina Beat Iceland In World Cup Warm-Up by Deollaa(op): 10:45am On Jun 10
Lionel Messi scored within minutes of returning from an injury scare as Argentina national football team defeated Iceland national football team 3-0 in their final FIFA World Cup warm-up match in Auburn, Alabama, on Tuesday.

Messi started the game on the bench as the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continues his recovery after suffering muscle fatigue during Inter Miami CF’s dramatic 6-4 victory over Philadelphia on 24 May.

Also rested at kickoff were Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister as coach Lionel Scaloni fielded an experimental line-up before a packed 88,000-capacity crowd.

Argentina dominate despite slow start

Iceland nearly stunned the reigning world champions early in the match when Mikael Egill Ellertsson blasted over the bar with a clear opportunity in front of goal.

Argentina quickly responded and took the lead after Iceland failed to properly clear a goalmouth scramble, allowing Strasbourg defender Valentin Barco to fire home from close range.

Nico Paz later missed a golden chance to double the advantage before halftime when his powerful strike was denied by Iceland goalkeeper Elias Olafsson.

Messi makes instant impact

At halftime, Scaloni introduced Fernandez, Mac Allister and Lautaro Martinez among several substitutions as Argentina increased the pressure.

Martinez twice struck the post before Messi finally entered the game in the final quarter to loud cheers from the crowd.

Foreign AffairsGunmen Kill 12 In South Africa Mass Shooting by Deollaa(op): 10:19am On Jun 10
At least 12 people have been killed after gunmen stormed an informal settlement near Johannesburg, South Africa, in another deadly mass shooting incident that has heightened concerns over violent crime in the country.

A police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

According to South African police, the attack occurred shortly after 11:00 pm on Tuesday when more than 10 armed men reportedly arrived in a vehicle and invaded the settlement before opening fire on residents.

Police said the gunmen entered the community through different access points before launching coordinated attacks across the area.

“The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle,” Colonel Nevhuhulwi said.

She disclosed that preliminary investigations confirmed that 12 people lost their lives during the attack.

“Eight adult males and three adult females were declared dead at the scene,” she stated, adding that another victim later died in hospital.

The attack happened in Cleveland, an area located about six kilometres east of Johannesburg city centre.

Politics“INEC Working With President Tinubu To Force A One-party Ballot In 2027” — Chila by Deollaa(op): 11:08am On Jun 09
Political affairs analyst, Prince Francis Chilaka, on Monday accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of allegedly working in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Chilaka made the allegation on Voice of the People TV Political Lens programme, where he claimed that INEC was taking advantage of internal crises within opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, African Democratic Congress and Social Democratic Party to sideline credible challengers before the final publication of candidates.

According to him, the commission’s handling of disputes across political parties reflects what he described as “double standards” capable of undermining public confidence in the democratic process.

“Double standards are the refuge of those who lack principles and from what is playing out it is obvious that INEC is playing double standards and it shows that INEC lacks principles,” Mr Chilaka said.

Analyst alleges bias in opposition party crises

Mr Chilaka argued that INEC had failed to take a firm and principled stance on lingering factional disputes rocking opposition parties, warning that the development could narrow Nigeria’s political space ahead of the elections.

“You cannot go to A today, dine with A, and B will call you on the same matter and you're dining with B, and then when they tell you to give a verdict you say you want to stay in the middle. You have encouraged the two people to go to war,” he added.

PoliticsKwankwaso Faults Security Strategy, Calls For Urgent Reforms by Deollaa(op): 10:23am On Jun 09
Former Kano State Governor and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called for urgent reforms to Nigeria’s security architecture, warning that insecurity is worsening across the country despite massive investments in the sector.

Mr Kwankwaso made the remarks in a statement shared on X on Tuesday, where he expressed concern over the escalating wave of violence affecting several parts of Nigeria.

“I have noted with grave concern the escalating wave of insecurity that has engulfed our beloved nation. Once again, Nigeria is bleeding profusely,” he said.

The remarks come amid renewed concerns over insecurity in different parts of Nigeria, with kidnappings, armed attacks and communal violence continuing to threaten public safety and economic activities.

Mr Kwankwaso listed states including Zamfara, Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, Kwara and Oyo among areas heavily affected by insecurity, noting that many Nigerians now live in fear due to banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, communal clashes and armed robbery.

According to him, the situation has become more troubling because of the increasing boldness of criminal groups operating across the country.

“What is most alarming is the audacity of these criminals, who now brazenly hold live sessions on social media to taunt the authorities and terrorise the public. This is totally unacceptable and not befitting of a sovereign nation like ours,” Mr Kwankwaso stated.

EducationNANS Slams LAUTECH Over Student Suspensions, Plans Monday Protest by Deollaa(op): 11:26am On Jun 07
The National Association of Nigerian Students, South-West Zone D, has condemned the suspension of some students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, over their alleged involvement in a peaceful protest concerning the relocation of the Anatomy and Physiology Departments.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan, the student body described the suspension as excessive and unfair, insisting that students who raised legitimate concerns should not be punished for expressing grievances.

The students had protested the movement of the departments from the College of Health Sciences to the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, arguing that the decision would negatively affect their academic activities and welfare.

The statement was jointly signed by the association’s Public Relations Officer, Olugbemi Timothy; General Secretary, Ojetola Babatunde; and Coordinator, Adeyemo Josiah.

NANS rejects “punitive measures”

NANS said while it does not support the breakdown of law and order, it is troubling that the institution chose sanctions over dialogue.

According to the association, the affected students protested the abrupt implementation of the relocation policy because of its implications on transportation, finances, welfare and academic activities.

According to reports, the victims were kidnapped by armed men who allegedly trailed the vehicle conveying them from their residence before intercepting them around 7:30am at the scene of the incident.

Rising kidnapping concerns in Ibadan

The incident has further heightened concerns over insecurity and rising cases of abduction in parts of Ibadan and Oyo State.

Foreign AffairsUS, Iran Trade Fresh Strikes Despite World Cup Visa Approval For Iran Team by Deollaa(op): 9:03am On Jun 06
Fresh military strikes between the United States and Iran on Friday threatened to derail an already fragile ceasefire in the Middle East, even as American officials confirmed that Iranian football players had received visas to participate in the FIFA World Cup.

The renewed tensions come after weeks of difficult negotiations aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route.

A ceasefire in the Middle East war, which began nearly 100 days ago following coordinated US and Israeli strikes that reportedly eliminated top Iranian military leaders, has remained shaky since taking effect on 8 April.

US strikes radar sites after drone interception

Tensions escalated again when the United States Central Command said American forces struck Iranian radar facilities after intercepting drones allegedly heading toward the Strait of Hormuz.

According to CENTCOM, four Iranian drones were downed before US forces targeted radar installations in Goruk and on Qeshm Island.

“The attack drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic,” the command stated, adding that the radar strikes were intended to prevent further attacks.

Shortly after the strikes, air raid sirens reportedly sounded across Kuwait and Bahrain, with residents hearing explosions in both Gulf nations.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards later claimed responsibility for retaliatory missile attacks on what they described as “enemy bases in the area.”

Iran fires missiles toward Kuwait, Bahrain

Iranian state media reported that missile strikes were launched in response to what Tehran described as a US “invasion” of Sirik and Qeshm Island.

CENTCOM stated that Iran launched seven ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain.

According to the US military, six missiles were intercepted while the seventh failed to reach its target.

“There are currently no reports of harm to US personnel, and Iranian claims of damaging US 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain are false,” CENTCOM said.

Kuwait’s military later confirmed that its air defence systems were responding to what it described as “hostile missile and drone attacks.”

SportsWorld Cup: FIFA Demands Payment After Ticket Glitch Gives Fans Free Access by Deollaa(op): 8:29am On Jun 05
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association has confirmed a ticketing error that mistakenly allowed dozens of football fans to secure free tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the organisation now demanding payment from affected supporters or risk cancellation of their seats.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Thursday, FIFA acknowledged that about 60 fans were allocated tickets at “0 USD” because of a payment processing issue during checkout.

“FIFA can confirm that approximately 60 FIFA World Cup 2026 fans received a communication on Wednesday, 3 June, regarding tickets that had been allocated at no charge (0 USD) due to a prior payment issue during the checkout process,” the organisation stated.

The development has sparked renewed criticism over FIFA’s ticketing process ahead of the tournament scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

FIFA apologised for the error but maintained that the tickets remain reserved pending proper payment by the affected fans.

“The tickets requested by these fans remain reserved, and the affected fans have been invited to complete payment of the correct amount,” the football governing body added.

According to reports by Ticket Talk Network, supporters affected by the glitch have been given seven days to pay for the tickets or forfeit them entirely.

The affected tickets were reportedly for group-stage matches scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada.

PoliticsNDC Defends Party Primaries, Denies Imposing Candidates by Deollaa(op): 8:19am On Jun 05
The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has dismissed allegations that its recently concluded presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state Houses of Assembly primaries were characterised by irregularities and the imposition of candidates.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, the party’s National Secretary, Morgan Enekweizu, said criticisms surrounding the primaries were largely based on ignorance of the party’s constitution and internal guidelines, as well as deliberate attempts to weaken the party’s growing political influence.

According to Mr Enekweizu, the party adopted a consensus-driven process designed to reduce internal disputes and strengthen unity among members.

“The NDC, the fastest-growing political party in Nigeria, is founded on the principles of leadership, consultation, inclusiveness, and consensus-building,” he stated.

Peter Obi, South-East leaders referenced

Mr Enekweizu cited the South-East geopolitical zone as an example of the party’s consultation-based structure, noting that the process involved caucus leaders and respected political stakeholders across the region.

He said the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined the party with an established leadership network made up of elder statesmen and political figures serving as caucus heads in their respective states.

PoliticsKogi Teachers Protest School Abductions, Demand Stronger Security by Deollaa(op): 10:55am On Jun 03
The Kogi State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest in Lokoja to condemn the rising cases of school abductions and attacks on educational institutions across Nigeria.

The protest, organised in line with directives from the union’s national leadership, was aimed at drawing attention to growing insecurity in schools, including the recent abduction of teachers and pupils in Oyo State and the kidnapping of dozens of schoolchildren in Borno State.

Addressing members during the demonstration, the Kogi State Chairman of the union, Abayomi Ayoola, described the recurring attacks on schools as disturbing and traumatic for the education sector.

NUT raises alarm over school attacks

Mr Ayoola said the union was deeply concerned over the continued attacks on schools and called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure the release of all victims still in captivity.

According to him, videos circulating online showing abducted victims have heightened fear among citizens and exposed the vulnerability of schools and learning environments across the country.

“We, as members of the union, are appealing to the Federal Government to rejig the security architecture of the country. The issue of kidnappings on a daily basis is traumatic and saddening. It has cast a shadow of grief over the entire nation,” he said.

Suspected bandits have killed a resident and abducted two women during an attack on a Fulani settlement in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Confirming the attack on Tuesday, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said one person was killed while two women were kidnapped.

“Yes, one man was killed while two women, 25 and 35 years of age, who are wives of the Seriki Fulani, were abducted,” Mr Ojo stated.

The police commissioner added that preliminary investigations showed the gunmen specifically targeted the Fulani leader, identified as an Ardo.

“The attackers targeted the Fulani leader, Ardo. And for now, we are still on their trail because before we got there, the military had repelled them before they ran into the forest, but we are on their trail,” he said.

Residents said the gunmen stormed the settlement at about 8pm, firing sporadically as villagers fled for safety.

PoliticsADC Primaries: Babachir Lawal Dumps ADC After Verbal Clash With Atiku by Deollaa(op): 10:07am On Jun 02
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, on Monday exchanged strong words over the conduct of the African Democratic Congress presidential primaries which produced Mr Atiku as the party’s candidate for the 2027 election.

Mr Atiku secured a total of 1,846,370 votes to defeat former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and businessman-politician, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who polled 504,117 and 177,120 votes respectively.

Mr Lawal, a prominent opposition figure and former ADC chieftain, announced his resignation from the party while accusing Mr Atiku of influencing the outcome of the primaries.

Babachir Lawal alleges primary manipulation

In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Mr Lawal described the primary election as massively rigged in favour of Mr Atiku.

“I am exiting the ADC because its just concluded primaries were at all levels massively rigged in favour of Kachalla Abubakar Atiku.

“Results were just written or rewritten to favour him and his coven. Even where they allowed some semblance of an election to be held, the winners were simply replaced with members of his syndicate. In the real sense, it was a disgraceful charade,” Mr Lawal stated.

The former SGF said he could not remain silent over what he described as irregularities within the party.

“I sense a conspiracy of silence of which I want no part. Most members of the party are behaving as if this is the normal thing to do,” he added.

Mr Lawal further declared that supporting Mr Atiku’s presidential ambition would amount to handing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu an easy path to re-election in 2027.

PoliticsDSS Denies Arresting Writer Okey Ndibe At Lagos Airport by Deollaa(op): 9:48am On Jun 02
The Department of State Services has denied reports alleging that acclaimed Nigerian writer and academic, Okey Ndibe, was arrested or detained at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on 1 June 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Deputy Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Favour Dozie, the DSS clarified that its interaction with Mr Ndibe at the airport was part of a routine process connected to the review and possible removal of individuals from its watchlist.

“The Department of State Services hereby clarifies that it did not arrest or detain Prof Okey Ndibe at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on June 1, 2026 or any other place on that date for that matter,” the statement read.

Reports had emerged on Monday claiming that Mr Ndibe was arrested and detained by DSS operatives upon his arrival in Nigeria through the Lagos airport.

The reports triggered reactions from civil society organisations and media stakeholders, raising concerns over press freedom and civic rights before the DSS issued its clarification.

DSS explains watchlist review process

According to the DSS, the current Director-General had ordered a review of long-standing Watch-List Actions, some dating back to the military era, to prevent citizens from facing embarrassment due to outdated security alerts.

The agency explained that individuals previously placed on security watchlists are routinely invited for interaction during transit as part of a process that may lead to their eventual delisting.

“In this regard, all those who had previously been watchlisted while on transit are routinely interfaced with as a prerequisite for a review and possible downgrade of the Action. This, being a precursor to a final delisting in accordance with international best practices,” the DSS stated.

The Service added that the review process helps determine whether the activities and travel histories of affected persons still justify their inclusion on the watchlist.

PoliticsI’m Happy States No Longer Struggle To Pay Salaries — President Tinubu by Deollaa(op): 10:21am On May 30
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said Nigeria’s economy is recovering, noting that many states are no longer struggling to pay workers’ salaries or relying heavily on federal government interventions.

Mr Tinubu stated this on Friday while receiving members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, during a Sallah homage at his Lagos residence.

Reflecting on his journey to becoming President, Mr Tinubu described the process as politically difficult and filled with legal and electoral challenges.

At the time, I faced the challenge of trying to become the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“It was very, very challenging. It was tough, for those who were in the party with me. Some kept faith, and instead of dodging the bullets, I took it. I took the point in the chin. Very hard work,” Mr Tinubu said.

Tinubu defends economic reforms

The President said many governors and party loyalists supported him despite uncertainty over the policies his administration would later implement.

“I didn’t disclose to anybody what I would do. Many of you took the risk and went along because of the party platform and everything. We survived. You faced litigations and accusations, and we survived it,” he stated.

Mr Tinubu maintained that Nigeria had avoided economic collapse and is now witnessing signs of recovery and growth.

“Instead of bankruptcy, Nigeria has survived. The economy has recovered. It is growing. Agriculture is humming. Food is here.”

He also commended governors for helping sustain public confidence during the implementation of his administration’s economic reforms.

“You kept the spirit, you kept the hope, you persuaded our people to be patient, to endure these three years of painful reforms, while we put the economy on reset.”

“No more struggle to pay salaries”

According to the President, ongoing reforms have improved the financial condition of many states across the country.

"Today, the benefit is showing. The economy has recovered, macroeconomic indices are doing very well.

“Construction is ongoing on roads and infrastructure. The ones abandoned are being rehabilitated. The housing industry is coming on very well,” Mr Tinubu said.

He added that states are now in a stronger fiscal position compared to previous years.

“I am glad that out of the 27 governors borrowing from the federal government and asking for interventions, we are no longer struggling to pay salaries. No more.”

Focus on agriculture and infrastructure

Mr Tinubu also highlighted the economic potential of infrastructure projects, particularly developments along the Sokoto-Badagry corridor.

“Today I was watching some clips of the Sokoto-Badagry axis, imagine how many dams on that corridor for irrigation, for farming land, for electricity.”

The President urged governors to maximise agricultural opportunities within their states, expressing optimism that Nigeria can achieve food sufficiency and long-term food security through effective land utilisation and investment in farming infrastructure

PoliticsFULL SPEECH: Tinubu Marks Third Year In Office by Deollaa(op): 9:17am On May 29
STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU (GCFR) ON THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ADMINISTRATION, MAY 29, 2026

My fellow compatriots,

Three years ago, you entrusted me with the sacred responsibility of leading our beloved nation at a defining moment in our history. I accepted that responsibility, fully aware of the magnitude of the challenges before us, but also deeply confident in the resilience and potential of the Nigerian people.

Today, on the occasion of the third anniversary of our administration, I speak to you not only as your President but also as a fellow citizen who understands the sacrifices many families have made in recent years and shares your hopes for a better Nigeria.

When this administration assumed office, our nation faced profound economic and structural difficulties. Mounting fiscal pressures, unsustainable fuel subsidies, declining revenues, exchange-rate distortions, rising debt-servicing costs, insecurity in several parts of the country, energy supply constraints, and declining public confidence in institutions all threatened our progress.

At the height of the subsidy regime, Nigeria was spending as much as ₦18.4 billion daily to sustain petrol subsidies—over ₦4 trillion in 2022 alone—resources that could have been invested in roads, healthcare, education, housing, and critical infrastructure. Multiple exchange rate windows and forex arbitrage created massive distortions, with Nigeria losing more than ₦8 trillion over three years to rent-seeking and speculative practices.

The situation demanded urgent and courageous action. Difficult but necessary decisions had to be taken to stabilise the economy and prevent a deeper national crisis. The easy choices would have been politically convenient. But leadership demands courage, especially when the right decisions are difficult.

Had we refused to act, our nation would have drifted toward fiscal breakdown, worsening poverty, and severe economic uncertainty. Together, we chose reform over ruin and decisiveness over hesitation. We chose long-term national recovery over short-term comfort.

These decisions came with sacrifice. The rising cost of living triggered by our measures placed enormous pressure on families, workers, and businesses. Young people searching for jobs felt discouraged. Many questioned whether these difficult decisions would lead to a better future.

I remain deeply conscious of those sacrifices, and I assure you: your sacrifice has not been in vain. And today, I can say with confidence that Nigeria has stabilised and is moving forward again. Across the country, visible progress is taking shape.

VISIBLE PROGRESS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Our economy is now more competitive and better positioned for sustainable growth than it was in 2023. Public finances are improving. States and local governments have greater resources to invest in their people. Investor confidence is growing. The stock market is booming, with the All Share Index rising from 53,000 and market capitalisation of N30 Trillion in 2023 to a record All Share Index of 250,000 and market capitalisation of N160 Trillion this year. Companies are declaring record profits and dividends.

Critical infrastructure projects are advancing at an unprecedented scale. Over 2,700 kilometres of highways and major roads are under construction, reconstruction, or rehabilitation, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road, the East-West Road, and many rural access roads. Significant sections are already completed or nearing completion, improving transportation, reducing travel time, boosting regional trade, and creating thousands of jobs.

Rail modernisation projects are ongoing to improve connectivity, logistics, and economic integration across the federation.
In the oil and gas sector, the reforms we instituted have attracted billions of dollars in fresh investment from the international oil companies that had shunned our country. The $5 billion NLNG Train 7 project is nearing completion to boost LNG production capacity, exports, and dividends.

Domestic gas utilisation is expanding. Local refining capacity has improved our energy security. With large-scale domestic and modular refineries operational, Nigeria is reducing its dependence on imported petroleum products and conserving foreign exchange.

For years, the power sector suffered from debt, underinvestment, and uncertainty, which weakened generation capacity and limited growth. Today, we are confronting those challenges directly.

Our administration is clearing legacy obligations, expanding transmission infrastructure, investing in renewable energy, and strengthening the national grid because no modern economy can grow in darkness. When power improves, businesses expand, industries grow, jobs are created, and families prosper.

We are determined to power Nigeria into a new era of industrial growth and economic opportunity.
