A Nigerian Catholic priest serving in the United States has died by suicide, days after being directed to leave the country and return to Nigeria, where he had repeatedly expressed fears for his safety. The late 54-year-old Reverend Benjamin Okwy Madu, died on 2 July at his residence in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, according to the Archdiocese of Boston, where he had served as a hospital chaplain and parish priest on Cape Ann since 2021. His R-1 religious worker visa was due to expire on 29 July. Ordered to return to Nigeria According to the Boston Globe, Madu's home Diocese of Abakaliki instructed him to return to Nigeria before the expiration of his visa ahead of a new pastoral assignment scheduled to begin on 4 August. The report said the priest had repeatedly indicated that he did not wish to return. In a farewell message posted on his parish's website days before his death, Madu wrote that leaving the United States was not his desire. "Returning home was not my wish, but circumstances beyond my control have warranted that my time in the United States come to an end." Panic attack before death The Sunday before his death, Mr Madu reportedly suffered a panic attack while driving to celebrate Mass and was treated at a hospital emergency room, according to a parishioner who spoke to the Boston Globe. Boston Archbishop Richard Henning later informed fellow priests in an internal email that Madu had "tragically took his own life," according to reports by the National Catholic Register. The Archdiocese's public statement announcing his death did not specify suicide as the cause. The Essex County District Attorney's Office confirmed that Madu's death remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police, adding that foul play is not suspected. Coalition links death to fears over return The US-Nigeria Civil Society Coalition alleged that the priest suffered severe emotional distress over the prospect of returning to Nigeria, where Catholic clergy have increasingly faced kidnappings and attacks. In a statement circulated to several media organisations, the coalition said Madu feared returning to a region where priests had become targets of violent criminal groups. The group also cited the inability to renew his US religious worker visa under current immigration policies as a contributing factor. "The terrifying reality of these rigid restrictions was made plain on July 2, 2026, when Father Benjamin Okwy Madu, a beloved 54-year-old Nigerian Catholic priest serving the North Shore of Massachusetts, tragically took his own life," the coalition stated. Served nearly six years in the US Born on 15:May 1972, Madu was ordained at St. Theresa Cathedral, Abakaliki, in Ebonyi State. He had served in the Archdiocese of Boston for nearly six years under successive R-1 religious worker visas and was due to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his priestly ordination on 7 July, just five days after his death. According to the Boston Globe, Archdiocese spokesperson Terrence Donilon said there was no legal pathway to extend the priest's visa under current US immigration policies affecting Nigerian nationals. Calls for immigration protection Following the incident, a coalition of Nigerian diaspora and Christian advocacy organisations urged the United States government to halt deportations of Nigerians and consider granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to eligible Nigerian nationals living in the country. A United States lobbying firm engaged by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Von Batten-Montague-York, says it will brief members of President Donald Trump's administration on the arrest of Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-acclaimed Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC). The Washington-based firm disclosed this in a statement posted on its X handle on Wednesday, hours after Mr Adeyemi was arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following a bench warrant issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja. Firm links arrest to planned U.S. briefing According to the firm, Mr Adeyemi's arrest came just as arrangements were being concluded for him to engage senior officials in the Trump administration over allegations he made against top Nigerian government officials. "We learned a short time ago that Mr. Adeyemi has been arrested by Nigerian law enforcement just as we were preparing for him to speak with senior members of President @realDonaldTrump's Administration," the statement read. The firm said Mr Adeyemi was expected to submit documentary evidence and a sworn statement to U.S. officials. "We are told that his arrest occurred shortly after it became public that we were in contact with him and just before he was expected to provide us with evidentiary materials and a sworn statement regarding his account. "Those materials were to be transmitted to senior members of the Trump Administration, who had requested that we provide all available information concerning Mr. Adeyemi's allegations," it added. Allegations against Presidency Without presenting evidence, Von Batten-Montague-York alleged that Mr Adeyemi's arrest was intended to stop him from sharing information with U.S. authorities. The firm claimed it would inform the Trump administration of the circumstances surrounding the arrest, including allegations that it was influenced by the Presidency. "Tomorrow, we will report that Mr. Adeyemi has been arrested. We will also report our concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding his arrest, including information we have received suggesting that his prompt arrest was pushed by President Tinubu's Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to prevent Mr. Adeyemi from presenting evidence to the U.S. government," the statement said. It added that it would continue to update the public on developments. Managing partner seeks U.S. investigation Earlier this week, the firm's managing partner, Karl Von Batten, disclosed that he had discussed Mr Adeyemi's claims with members of President Trump's team and planned to brief members of the U.S. Congress. According to him, Mr Adeyemi's allegations warranted investigation by the U.S. Congress, the State Department, the U.S. Treasury, the Government Accountability Office and other relevant agencies over the alleged misuse of World Bank-funded loans in Nigeria. Atiku's lobbying contract The development comes months after Atiku Abubakar engaged Von Batten-Montague-York under a $1.2 million, 12-month lobbying agreement. The contract covers lobbying U.S. government officials as well as providing strategic communications and reputational advisory services on behalf of the former vice president. Police arrest and court proceedings Mr Adeyemi was arrested on Tuesday in Osun State by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force's Intelligence Response Team after Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a bench warrant for his arrest. The police accused him of conspiracy, forgery and impersonation, alleging that he forged official government documents, including a purported presidential appointment letter allegedly signed by the President's Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. Investigators also alleged that Mr Adeyemi falsely presented himself as the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, an agency the Presidency insists does not exist. Before his arrest, Mr Adeyemi claimed he paid ₦400 million through an intermediary to secure the appointment and alleged that he feared for his life. Nigeria's crude oil production has climbed to its highest level in more than six years, surpassing the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) production quota for the fourth consecutive month. Latest figures released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) show that the country's average crude oil production reached 1.56 million barrels per day (mbpd) in June 2026, while condensate production stood at 0.18 million barrels per day, bringing total daily oil and condensate output to 1,735,398 barrels per day. In a statement issued by the Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, the NUPRC said June marked the fourth consecutive month of production growth, reflecting the continued recovery of Nigeria's upstream petroleum sector. "Nigeria's crude oil and condensate production soared to an average of 1,735,398 barrels per day in the month of June 2026, representing positive growth for a fourth consecutive month," the commission stated. The production level represents 104 per cent of Nigeria's OPEC crude oil quota of 1.5 million barrels per day and marks the country's highest crude oil output since April 2020, making it a 74-month high. According to the report, total crude oil and condensate production increased from 1.700 million barrels per day in May to 1.735 million barrels per day in June, representing a 2.2 per cent month-on-month increase. Production has maintained a steady upward trend, rising from 1.483 million barrels per day in February to 1.564 million in March, 1.663 million in April, 1.701 million in May, and 1.735 million barrels per day in June. Improved operations boost output The NUPRC attributed the improved performance to enhanced operational stability, better production efficiency and the absence of major pipeline disruptions during the review period. According to the commission, stable operations across key oil-producing assets, improved crude evacuation and successful completion of scheduled maintenance activities contributed significantly to the production increase. While a few facilities experienced temporary operational shutdowns, the commission noted that the overall impact on national production remained minimal. It added that operators and industry stakeholders had continued to improve operational efficiency, maintain asset integrity and enhance production reliability across the upstream sector. Bonny, Forcados lead production Analysis of production by export terminals showed that Bonny Terminal remained Nigeria's highest-producing export terminal, recording an average of 318,280 barrels per day, up from 293,880 barrels per day recorded in May. Forcados Terminal ranked second with 306,360 barrels per day, while Qua Iboe Terminal recorded a decline to 164,730 barrels per day. Production at Escravos Terminal rose slightly to 138,030 barrels per day, while Bonga Terminal maintained stable output at 103,660 barrels per day. The commission also disclosed that Nigeria's highest daily combined crude oil and condensate production during June reached 1.89 million barrels per day, while the lowest daily output stood at 1.57 million barrels per day. Economic significance The sustained increase in oil production is expected to strengthen Nigeria's export earnings, improve foreign exchange inflows and boost government revenues. Nigeria has struggled for years to meet its OPEC production quota due to crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, ageing infrastructure and underinvestment. However, industry reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act, improved security around oil facilities and stronger collaboration between government agencies and operators have contributed to the gradual recovery. The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the recent killings in Benue and Plateau states, describing the attacks as heartbreaking and a painful reminder of the country's worsening security challenges. In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, Mr Obi reacted to the killing of at least 18 people in Benue State and the murder of nine members of a family, including a two-month-old baby, in Plateau State. The attacks in Benue occurred in Otukpo-Nobi community and Akpachi village in Otukpo Local Government Area, while the Plateau victims were killed in Kum and Wereng-Camp communities in Riyom Local Government Area. Mr Obi said the continuous bloodshed across parts of Nigeria should never be accepted as a normal occurrence. "The relentless cycle of bloodshed in parts of our country has persisted for far too long," he said. According to him, families across Benue, Plateau and other violence-hit communities have endured years of fear, displacement and loss. "For years, families in Benue, Plateau and other communities across Nigeria have lived under the constant shadow of fear, violence and displacement. Mothers have buried their children, children have become orphans overnight, farmers have abandoned their lands, and entire communities have been left devastated. We cannot continue to accept this tragic cycle as though it were normal. It is not." Calls for proactive security The former Anambra State governor stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of any government. Defending champions Argentina have booked a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating 10-man Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in a dramatic quarter-final clash on Sunday in Kansas City. The victory sets up a highly anticipated last-four encounter against England, reviving one of football's fiercest international rivalries. Argentina made a bright start at Arrowhead Stadium, taking the lead in the 10th minute when Alexis Mac Allister headed home from a Lionel Messi corner, giving the South Americans an early advantage before a crowd dominated by Argentine supporters. Despite falling behind, Switzerland gradually grew into the contest and found a deserved equaliser in the 67th minute through Dan Ndoye, who finished neatly after being picked out by Ricardo Rodriguez. Switzerland reduced to 10 men The game took a decisive turn just minutes later when Swiss striker Breel Embolo received a second yellow card for simulation following a VAR review, leaving Switzerland to play the remainder of the match with 10 men. Argentina piled on the pressure but were unable to find a winner in regulation time, forcing the match into extra time. Alvarez inspires Argentina With penalties looming, Julian Alvarez produced a moment of brilliance in the 112th minute, curling a spectacular strike into the top corner to restore Argentina's lead. Lautaro Martinez added a third goal in stoppage time of extra time to seal a hard-fought 3-1 victory and send Lionel Scaloni's side into the semi-finals. Reacting after the match, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged the challenge posed by Switzerland. "We had to suffer a lot but we knew they were a physical team. We had many difficulties. Sometimes we couldn't find the solutions, but today we had luck on our side because one of their players was sent off." Messi continues to shine Although he did not score, Lionel Messi played another influential role, providing the assist for Mac Allister's opener to register his 10th World Cup assist across six tournaments. The Argentina captain remains joint-top scorer in the race for the Golden Boot with eight goals alongside France's Kylian Mbappé. Argentina have now stretched their unbeaten World Cup run to 12 matches as they continue their bid to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title. Historic semi-final awaits The semi-final against England promises another memorable chapter in one of football's most storied rivalries. The two nations have produced several iconic World Cup encounters, including Diego Maradona's famous "Hand of God" and "Goal of the Century" during Argentina's 2-1 victory at the 1986 World Cup. England later gained revenge at the 2002 tournament after Argentina won their 1998 World Cup meeting on penalties. Two people were killed and at least four others sustained serious injuries after gunfire erupted during a salsa festival that attracted thousands of people in Toronto, Canada. Investigators said the incident occurred on Saturday during the Salsa on St. Clair Festival, where more than 13,000 people had gathered for the Latin music event. According to police, the shooting resulted from an exchange of gunfire between two individuals. Toronto Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo said officers recovered two firearms at the scene. He disclosed that two men were pronounced dead, while four other victims were taken to nearby hospitals with serious injuries. “Two males have been pronounced dead, and another four individuals have been transported to local hospitals with serious injuries,” Mr Barredo said. Police had initially described the incident as involving an active shooter, but Mr Barredo later clarified that investigations no longer supported that assessment. He added that investigators had not ruled out the possibility that more than two people were involved in the shooting. “There have been no arrests at this time,” he said. Carney reacts Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the shooting as horrifying in a post on X. “I am horrified by the shooting that has killed two people at the Salsa on St. Clair Festival in Toronto,” Mr Carney wrote. “My prayers are with the families grieving their loved ones.” The Prime Minister also commended police officers and emergency responders for their swift response, saying their actions prevented further tragedy. Mayor condemns attack Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the violence, describing it as reckless and irresponsible. “I am deeply disturbed and angry about this reckless and irresponsible act of violence right in the middle of a festival attended by families, children and seniors,” Ms Chow said. A festival attendee, Jason Ferda, told AFP he initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks. “I was scared, I left,” he said. Another eyewitness told local broadcaster CTV News that panic quickly spread through the crowd. “Suddenly, everybody was running towards the stage, and everyone was like, ‘What’s going on?’ The police came and they stopped the music,” the witness said. “Everything happened so fast.” Recent shootings in Canada The Toronto shooting comes weeks after another deadly attack in Montreal, where two people, including a police officer, were killed before the suspected gunman was shot dead by law enforcement officers. Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia says his side is embracing the underdog tag ahead of Friday's FIFA World Cup quarter-final against European champions Spain, insisting his team is capable of pulling off a major upset. Spain head into the clash in Los Angeles as overwhelming favourites after reaching the last eight without conceding a goal throughout the tournament. Belgium, however, endured a more difficult route to the quarter-finals, narrowly topping their group after draws against Egypt and Iran before staging a dramatic comeback to eliminate Senegal in the knockout stage. 'We think we can do it' Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Mr Garcia said many people had already written Belgium off, but stressed that his players remained confident. “Everyone is already talking about us going home. But we think that we can do it,” he said. “We think we can pull it off, and we’re going to do everything we can to get to the semis.” Belgium finding momentum Mr Garcia noted that Belgium produced one of their best performances of the tournament in the Round of 16, thrashing co-hosts United States 4-1 to book their place in the quarter-finals. He also highlighted his team's attacking statistics, revealing that Belgium have scored 13 goals at the tournament, trailing only France and Argentina, while their 107 shots are second only to France, who have played one more match. Asked whether he was worried that American supporters in Los Angeles might back Spain following Belgium's victory over the United States, Mr Garcia dismissed the concern. “We just beat the US, obviously, and again at a stadium where everyone was against us. So I don’t think the conditions will be any more difficult tomorrow,” he said. “It’s not the fans that score the goals. We’re going to focus on what we can do. We’ve got enough on our plate with the Spanish squad that is a wonderful footballing team. “And even if we’re the underdog for tomorrow, we’re going to do everything we can to give them a run for their money.” Lukaku backs Belgium Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku also expressed confidence ahead of the encounter, saying the team had not reached the quarter-finals simply to make up the numbers. “If you manage to get this far, then you’re not going to play a game just to go home,” Mr Lukaku said. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned the leader of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Abdullahi Bodejo, before the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged money laundering involving $2.33 million. Mr Bodejo was arraigned on Thursday before Justice Inyang Ekwo on a 12-count charge bordering on alleged violations of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act. At the proceedings, prosecution counsel, Wahab Shittu (SAN), informed the court that the charge, dated 24 June 2026, and filed on 25 June, was ready for arraignment and urged the court to allow the defendant to take his plea. The court granted the request. Allegations against Bodejo According to the first count, Mr Bodejo allegedly accepted $100,000 in cash on 11 January 2022, from Sa’idu Abubakar, a former Accountant-General of Bauchi State, without routing the transaction through a financial institution as required by law. The EFCC alleged that the act contravened Section 16(1)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) and is punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act. In Count Four, the anti-graft agency further alleged that Mr Bodejo accepted another $980,000 in cash from Mr Abubakar on 7 February 2024, also without passing the funds through a financial institution, contrary to the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Mr Bodejo pleaded not guilty to all 12 charges. Following the plea, Mr Shittu asked the court to fix a trial date and remand the defendant in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service. Bail request opposed Counsel to the defendant, Ahmed Raji (SAN), urged the court to grant his client bail based on an application filed on 30 June 2026. The prosecution opposed the application, relying on a 28-paragraph counter-affidavit dated 6 July 2026. Mr Shittu argued that Mr Bodejo posed a flight risk, adding that the Department of State Services (DSS) was also interested in him. He further contended that the defendant's influence could enable him to interfere with witnesses and obstruct the trial. Families and residents of the Omugo community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have celebrated the return of the three remaining worshippers of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Omugo, who regained their freedom after spending 105 days in captivity. In a statement issued on Tuesday, President of the Omugo Development Union, Oladimeji Thompson, described the return of the three women as a moment of mixed emotions, saying the community was celebrating their freedom while mourning those who lost their lives. "With grateful hearts, we give all glory to Almighty God because the three remaining mothers in captivity have finally regained their freedom and have been reunited with their families. "Indeed, God has once again shown that He hears and answers the prayers of His people. To Him alone be all the glory," Mr Thompson said. He recalled that the attack on the church was one of the darkest moments in the community's history, noting that Omugo endured 105 days of fear, uncertainty and continuous prayers while hoping for the victims' safe return. "For 105 painful days, our community lived in fear, anxiety, uncertainty and unceasing prayers. Yet, we never gave up hope. We trusted in God, stood together as one people and believed that He would make a way where there seemed to be none," he added. The three women, including a hearing-impaired widow, were among eight worshippers abducted by suspected kidnappers who invaded the church during a Sunday service on 22 March 2026. While five of the victims reportedly died in captivity, the remaining three regained their freedom following a coordinated security operation targeting suspected kidnappers operating in forests along the Kwara-Kogi border. Tribute to deceased victims Mr Thompson also paid tribute to the five worshippers who died in captivity, describing their deaths as a painful loss that would never be forgotten. "Even as we celebrate this joyful reunion, our hearts remain heavy with grief as we remember the five precious worshippers who lost their lives in the kidnappers' den. "On behalf of the Omugo Development Union, I extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, ECWA Church, Omugo, and the entire community. May the Almighty God comfort every grieving family and grant eternal rest to the souls of our departed brothers and sisters," he said. Appreciation to security agencies The community leader commended the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Armed Forces, local vigilante groups and other security personnel for their roles in securing the victims' release. "We sincerely appreciate the government at all levels, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Armed Forces, local vigilante groups and all security personnel whose courage, professionalism and relentless efforts contributed to the successful rescue of the remaining captives," Mr Thompson said. He also praised the Oloro of Oro Ago, the Olomugo of Omugo, the Council of Chiefs, and members of the Omugo community at home and in the diaspora for their support, prayers and financial contributions throughout the ordeal. Mr Thompson further urged displaced residents to return home, assuring them that measures had been put in place to guarantee the safety of lives and property. Security operation Earlier, the Joint Security Watch, Kwara South, disclosed that the victims regained their freedom after sustained pressure was mounted on the kidnappers during a coordinated security operation along the Kwara-Kogi border. The group said a joint operation involving the military, police, hunters and vigilante groups forced the kidnappers to release several captives held in the forests. Church confirms release The pastor of ECWA Omugo, Rev. Sunday Omole, confirmed that the three women had returned safely and appealed for prayers for their recovery. Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved the employment of 100 unemployed graduates from Biu Local Government Area as part of efforts to tackle youth restiveness, political thuggery and other social vices in the state. Mr Zulum announced the approval on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Biu, Alhaji Mustapha Mustapha II. The development was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Dauda Iliya. The governor was in Southern Borno to officially flag off the 2026 wet farming season, commence the sale of fertiliser at government-approved subsidised rates for smallholder and returnee farmers, and launch other empowerment programmes. Mr Zulum said incidents of thuggery had reduced significantly since the beginning of his administration but stressed that creating employment opportunities for young people remained the most sustainable way to address the challenge. Employment plan The governor said each local government area in Borno State would have 50 graduates employed, while larger councils, including Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Jere, Bama, Askira/Uba and Gwoza, would have 100 beneficiaries each. "We are here for the flag-off of the wet farming season and the sales of fertiliser at subsidised rates. I am grateful to the people of Biu for the overwhelming support and the warm reception they have always accorded us," Mr Zulum said. He added that empowering unemployed youths was critical to preventing them from being exploited for criminal and political activities. "We will be doing a great disservice to our youth if we allow them to continue to engage in thuggery without empowering them. You hardly find the children of prominent politicians, governors, senators, commissioners or even councillors involved in political thuggery," he said. Warning against social vices Mr Zulum warned against the vandalisation of public infrastructure, particularly electricity facilities, saying anyone found engaging in such acts would face the full weight of the law. He also urged the Emir of Biu and other community leaders to support the government's campaign against drug abuse, gangsterism and other social vices. "Your Royal Highness, we must address the rising cases of drug abuse, gangsterism and other social vices if we are to bequeath a better society to the next generation. "We will continue to invest in our youth. I want Biu Local Government to identify 100 unemployed graduates, preferably those who studied health-related courses, English, Mathematics and Physics, especially among those involved in political thuggery, and we are ready to offer them employment opportunities," he said. APC governorship running mate Mr Zulum also disclosed that the running mate to the APC governorship candidate, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, would be unveiled next week. Legal practitioner and political affairs analyst, Darlington Agumuo on Monday, accused West African leaders, including the Nigerian government, of lacking the political will to establish a unified regional military force to combat terrorism. Mr Agumuo made the remarks during a global affairs programme on Voice of the People TV, alleging that religious sentiment continues to undermine efforts to end insurgency across the region. According to him, some political leaders are unwilling to confront terrorist groups because they regard the insurgents as "brothers in faith." "They have not decided, they have not mastered the political will to carry out action because religious sentiment has come in. Some of them see them as their brothers; they are their religious brothers. Is that not the same thing that has happened in Nigeria? 'They are our brothers, they are our prodigal sons.' And so this type of mentality will never solve this problem," Mr Agumuo said. Calls for regional military action Mr Agumuo argued that a regional force comprising one million soldiers could eliminate terrorist groups operating across West Africa within six months if member states demonstrated genuine commitment. He also criticised Nigeria's previous military engagements outside its borders, questioning why resources deployed to assist neighbouring countries had not been fully directed toward addressing insecurity at home. "Our own Nigeria sent 198 fighter jets to help them fight their own insecurity, meanwhile the home front is still loading. The terrorists at home have not been taken care of, but we can muster such resources to go and help another West African country.” "If all of them agree, Nigeria will never agree. That's just the issue here. So why should I blame the terrorists? They should continue to have their way now," he added. Mr Agumuo maintained that political hypocrisy remains the greatest obstacle to lasting peace in the region. Comments on xenophobia Speaking during the same programme, Mr Agumuo also defended the actions of some South Africans against Nigerian immigrants, arguing that countries have a right to protect their economies from what he described as the consequences of Nigeria's governance failures. "You are blaming South Africa, so you want to come and spoil their own country the same way you spoil your own? If I'm South African, I will not allow you. I will not. You go back to your country, I will not allow you, seriously. You must go and repair your country," he said. His remarks drew an immediate response from the programme's anchor, who challenged the comments as unfair to Nigerians leaving the country because of economic hardship. Responding, Mr Agumuo questioned why Nigerians appeared to constitute a significant proportion of migrants facing deportation or detention in several countries. "Wherever they are causing problems, it's Nigerians that will be larger in number. In a deportation camp in India, over 300 of them are Nigerians. Can you imagine? And they are treated like dogs," he said. He argued that rather than demanding compensation from foreign governments over attacks on Nigerian citizens, the Federal Government should focus on addressing the conditions driving citizens to leave the country. Mr Agumuo’s comments come amid renewed diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa following a fresh wave of anti-immigrant violence involving Nigerian nationals, as well as growing security concerns across the Sahel following continued terrorist attacks despite regional military efforts. The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot has become one of the closest in the tournament's history. France forward Kylian Mbappé, Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Norway striker Erling Haaland are all tied on seven goals heading into the quarter-finals, with little separating three of football's biggest stars. Mr Mbappé moved to the top of the scoring chart after converting a penalty in France's 1-0 Round of 16 victory over Paraguay. Mr Messi had reached seven goals a day earlier after scoring against Cape Verde in Argentina's extra-time victory, extending his record as the FIFA World Cup's all-time leading scorer. Mr Haaland joined the duo on seven goals after netting twice in Norway's shock 2-1 victory over five-time champions Brazil to send his country into the quarter-finals. It is the first time in FIFA World Cup history that three players have scored seven or more goals at the same stage of a tournament. Should the trio remain level after the final, FIFA's tiebreakers would be decided by assists and then minutes played, with Mr Mbappé currently holding the advantage. Kane leads chasing pack England captain Harry Kane is one goal behind the leading trio with six goals after converting a penalty in England's 3-2 quarter-final-clinching victory over Mexico. The 32-year-old, who won the Golden Boot at the 2018 FIFA World Cup with six goals, has already equalled that tally with three rounds still remaining. A group of players are next on four goals, including England midfielder Jude Bellingham, whose brace helped defeat Mexico, France winger Ousmane Dembélé, and Spain forward Mikel Oyarzabal. Golden Glove race remains wide open The race for the Golden Glove is also finely balanced as the tournament heads into the quarter-finals. France goalkeeper Mike Maignan is among the leading contenders after conceding only two goals in his country's opening five matches, with only Senegal and Norway finding a way past him. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, the reigning Golden Glove winner, is also in contention as he seeks to become the first player to retain the award. Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) has been formally launched at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State. The landmark project is a joint initiative of the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and the Abia State Government. Speaking during the inauguration, Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, said the establishment of the Manu-Tech UniPod reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning higher education as a catalyst for innovation, entrepreneurship, research commercialisation, and job creation. Describing it as a “strategic investment in Nigeria’s future,” Mr Shettima said universities must evolve beyond traditional teaching and research to become hubs for enterprise development, technology transfer, and industrial competitiveness. According to the Vice President, “This initiative represents far more than the commissioning of another university facility. “It is the unveiling of the broad national vision that positions our universities as agents of industrial transformation, innovation, enterprise creation, and sustainable economic development.” He added, “Let me reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the Federal Government to creating an educational system that develops talent, drives innovation, accelerates industrialisation, and contributes meaningfully to the achievement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion Nigerian economy by the year 2030.” Otti hails project Speaking in a keynote address titled Science Meets Enterprise, Abia State Governor Alex Otti said the siting of the UniPod in Abia reflects the confidence the UNDP and the Federal Government have in the state’s potential as an engine of growth and economic prosperity. Mr Otti noted that the confidence reposed in Abia by the partners was already yielding tangible results and appreciated the decision to establish the project in the state. UNDP highlights innovation drive The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, Ms Ahunna Eziakonwa, described the Innovation Pod as more than a physical structure. “This Innovation Pod—this UniPod—is one thread in that grand tapestry. Here, in Abia State, Nigeria, we believe in the impossible. “What this Innovation Pod represents is more than a physical space. It is a commitment to unlock the creative and innovative potential of Africa’s youth. Here, engineering meets art. Business meets social enterprise. The boundaries between disciplines dissolve. Here, failure is a critical step in innovation. Here, diversity of thought is our greatest asset,” she said. Also speaking, the Resident Representative of UNDP Nigeria, Ms Elsie Attafuah, described the launch as part of a remarkable innovation journey unfolding across Nigeria. She said the project responds to efforts to position Abia as Nigeria’s leading hub for innovation-driven industrial transformation. Ms Attafuah acknowledged the contribution of TETFund under the leadership of Arc. Sonny Echono, noting that the agency continues to deliver strategic infrastructure across Nigerian universities. She added that UNDP is mobilising $1 billion to build Africa’s largest innovation ecosystem, supporting 10,000 startups, enabling 1,000 high-growth ventures to scale, improving the livelihoods of over 100 million people, and generating $10 billion in value across the continent over the next decade. Vice-Chancellor speaks Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of MOUAU, Prof. Ursala Akanwa, described the commissioning as a defining moment in the university’s history. The Nigerian Senate has defended the proposed State Police Bill, saying it contains constitutional safeguards that would allow the federal police to intervene in cases of electoral intimidation, serious human rights violations and threats to national security. The clarification was made on Sunday by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele amid growing concerns that state governors could abuse state police for political purposes ahead of future elections. According to Mr Bamidele, the proposed legislation clearly defines the responsibilities of both federal and state police to prevent operational conflicts while strengthening security across the country. Senate defends state police bill Mr Bamidele disclosed that 84 out of the 109 senators voted in favour of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, during its clause-by-clause consideration. He described the outcome as evidence of broad bipartisan support for the legislation. “The intervention can only be granted when there is an outright breakdown of public order; where a state police service is incapable of functioning; where there are serious abuses of fundamental rights; where there is partisan or electoral intimidation; and when national security is heavily strained and threatened,” he said. Federal, State police roles defined The Senate Leader explained that the federal police would retain responsibility for protecting federal institutions, policing the Federal Capital Territory, combating terrorism, organised crime, cybercrime, border security, arms trafficking and other national security matters. State police, he said, would focus on enforcing state laws, maintaining public order and protecting lives and property within their respective states. Safeguards against abuse Addressing fears that governors could weaponise state police against political opponents, Mr Bamidele said the bill establishes an independent State Police Service Commission to regulate state police operations without the approval or control of state governors. He also explained that although governors would nominate commissioners of police, appointments would only take effect following recommendations by the National Police Council and approval by a two-thirds majority of the relevant State House of Assembly. “To avoid any form of abuse, the bill creates the State Police Service Commission,” he said. Product of National consultations Mr Bamidele dismissed claims that the proposal was politically motivated, noting that it followed extensive consultations with the executive, the Nigeria Governors' Forum, the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force. At least nine farmers have been killed and several others kidnapped after armed bandits attacked a farming community in Kaduna State, according to a security report seen by AFP and local sources. The attack occurred on Saturday in Kakangi village, located in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, where the assailants reportedly stormed farmlands and opened fire on farmers working during the ongoing rainy season. A security report prepared for the United Nations stated that the attackers invaded the farmlands outside Kakangi village and shot farmers while they were cultivating their fields. “Nine bodies have been recovered so far, with six of the victims identified by local authorities,” the report said. The latest attack comes despite a peace agreement brokered by local authorities in November 2024 between communities in Birnin Gwari and armed groups operating in the area. However, violence has continued unabated. Community confirms casualties A community leader in Birnin Gwari, Kabiru Ishaq, who visited the village to sympathise with residents, said the death toll stood at 10. According to Mr Ishaq, the attack was a reprisal after farmers reportedly killed one of the bandits during an attempted robbery earlier on the same day. The security report also attributed the attack to retaliation, stating that the slain bandit's accomplice returned with reinforcements and launched the deadly assault. Rising attacks on farming communities Armed criminal gangs, locally referred to as bandits, have intensified attacks on farming communities across northern and central Nigeria since the onset of the rainy season. The groups are known for attacking villages, killing residents, abducting victims for ransom, rustling cattle, looting homes and imposing illegal levies on farming communities. Lagos business operators have expressed deep frustration over escalating electricity costs coupled with persistent blackouts, warning that standard utility billing practices have turned into aggressive extortion. Speaking on Voice of the People 90.3 FM Evening Rush program on Friday, Manager representing one of Romeo’s Pizza and Cold berry ice cream outlet highlighted a stark space-versus-pricing disparity under the current energy regime of Mrs Ogochukwu Onyelucha who was formerly Chief Commercial Officer was promoted Acting Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director. He noted that while Romeo’s Pizza operates a 250-square-meter duplex production line in Surulere for roughly 320,000 Naira monthly, a tiny 40-square-meter business outlet in the Ajao area was hit with an estimated bill of 1,124,000 Naira for a single month by Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (Ikeja Electric). This occurs despite the Ajao business experiencing near-total grid blackouts, forcing them to power 24-hour operations entirely with a 25kVA diesel generator. With diesel costs hovering near 2,000 Naira per liter, he warned that double-paying for estimated bills and fuel is unsustainable and will force heavy staff layoffs. Adding to the outcry, a live guest shared the grueling experience of managing KARAT 24 Hotel, a 20-room hospitality business in Festac Town. He revealed that after paying a baseline of 1.7 million to 2 million Naira early this year, the hotel's monthly bill from the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKDC) suddenly skyrocketed to 3.9 million Naira for May. The hike followed a verbal, undocumented notification that they had been shifted to "Band A." While Band A promises 18 to 20 hours of daily supply, Mr. Michael verified the hotel rarely received up to 4 hours of grid light, forcing them to spend an additional 3 to 4 million Naira on diesel. Furthermore, he detailed predatory billing tactics, stating that EKDC field teams deliberately omitted the hotel's meter number from the bill to keep them on estimated billing despite having a verified, functional analog meter. After confronting management at the Festac 23 Road office to no avail, he took the issue to the EKDC Head Office in Marina. There, an official named Miss Chinyere confirmed the billing fraud and promised immediate reconnection if a goodwill payment of 3 million Naira was made. However, despite paying the 3 million Naira and providing the receipt, the hotel remained disconnected as field teams ignored the order. Reacting to the situation, studio guest Barrister Darlington Agumuo slammed the utility crisis as a symptom of President Tinubu administration's multi-tiered tariff reforms. He argued that regulators like NERC have previously ordered DisCos to reimburse Band A consumers for low service delivery and refund 20 billion Naira spent out-of-pocket on meters, yet these directives are actively ignored. Mr Darlington labeled the operational strategy of the distribution companies as "corruption pro-max," warning that officials view their positions merely as a "cashing-out point" to milk local enterprises to the detriment of the public. President Bola Tinubu on Thursday playfully referred to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as “Iya Alakara” (Mama Akara Seller) during the Presidential Press Corps Dinner at the State House in Abuja. The light-hearted remark came while the President was acknowledging dignitaries during his address, drawing laughter and applause from guests at the event. A video of the occasion, shared by Aso Rock TV, showed Tinubu smiling before turning to his wife during the protocol session. “Good evening, gentlemen of the press, ladies and gentlemen, my dear wife, the First Lady, Iya Alakara,” the President said, prompting reactions from the audience. The President's comment comes weeks after the First Lady encouraged Nigerian women to embrace small-scale businesses such as selling akara (bean cakes), roasted corn and kuli-kuli under the Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment programme. Mrs Tinubu had stated that such businesses require minimal capital to establish. Her remarks generated widespread reactions on social media, with some Nigerians arguing that the comments did not reflect the current economic realities facing many citizens. First Lady clarifies remarks Responding to the criticism during the inauguration of the newly constructed Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the Emir of Hadejia's Palace in Jigawa State, Mrs Tinubu explained that the Federal Government's empowerment programme extends beyond akara sellers. She disclosed that the Federal Government had donated N100 million to the Jigawa State Government to support 2,000 petty traders. “Because of the atmosphere, what is going on, I’ve told Her Excellency that we’ve already given, donated about 100 million to her to use to empower 2,000 petty traders. “And I know they’ve been talking that I said akara. It’s not only akara, we also have tomato sellers. We have boole, and those also selling pepper, selling vegetables for us in the market. United Kingdom law enforcement agencies have identified more than 150 offenders and victims as part of a nationwide crackdown on organised drug-facilitated sexual assault and domestic abuse networks. The coordinated operation, announced on Thursday by the National Crime Agency, targets criminal groups that allegedly use digital platforms to coordinate sexual assaults, share abuse material and exploit victims. According to the agency, organised drug-facilitated sexual assault involves offenders deliberately incapacitating victims with drugs or alcohol before committing rape or other sexual offences. Authorities said the crimes are often committed by people known to the victims and may continue undetected for years. Investigation expands The NCA disclosed that since October 2025, investigators have identified more than 270 individuals connected to an online forum and its successor platforms. The agency said over 210 intelligence packages relating to suspects, victims and persons of interest had been shared with law enforcement agencies in the UK and abroad, leading to at least 14 criminal investigations. Authorities added that technology has increasingly enabled offenders to organise, encourage abusive behaviour and facilitate offences across international borders. Coordinated response Under the new strategy, the NCA will work alongside the Crown Prosecution Service, police forces, health services, Sexual Assault Referral Centres and specialist organisations to strengthen intelligence sharing, improve investigations and better protect victims. The initiative also builds on the existing Operation Soteria programme, which focuses investigations on offender behaviour and digital evidence to improve prosecution outcomes in rape and serious sexual offence cases. International cooperation The agency said it is also expanding international collaboration through Project Medusa, a Europol-supported initiative launched in April 2026. Investigators from Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, the United States and Europol recently met in London to exchange intelligence on suspected offenders, victims and online criminal networks. According to the NCA, the operation resulted in the identification of more than 150 offenders and victims, the launch of over 270 new international investigations and the discovery of four previously unknown online communities linked to the offences. Despite the progress, authorities warned that the true scale of organised drug-facilitated sexual assault remains unknown because many cases go unreported. NCA Deputy Director Nigel Leary said protecting victims remains the agency's priority while intensifying efforts to dismantle criminal networks. “Drug facilitated sexual assault is no longer isolated behaviour, but increasingly organised, conducted via coordinated networks and enabled by digital platforms, requiring a more sophisticated operational response,” Mr Leary said. Appointment letter. Photo credit: Kenneth Okonkwo South-East concerns Mr Okonkwo disclosed that discussions with Atiku and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress addressed concerns relating to the interests of the South-East despite challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026. He said, “At a dialogue with HE AA and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East have been discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground.” He also expressed appreciation to Dr Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr Ekene Onwuka, for their contributions to strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections. “My sincere gratitude to my family, fans, and friends for their support and prayers, which God answered in covering my errors and colouring my efforts to pave way for this appointment. I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision, and protection needed to carry out this challenging post, which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria,” he added. Background The appointment comes weeks after Mr Okonkwo criticised the ADC’s choice of a vice-presidential candidate, arguing that selecting a candidate from the South-South would further marginalize the South-East in Nigeria’s highest political offices. Business owners in Lagos state have lamented exploitation of their businesses by Ikeja Electric. According to them, because of the outrageous tariff charges, most of them are no more making profits in their businesses. They said that the tariff became worse when Mrs Ogochukwu Onyelucha who was formerly Chief Commercial Officer was promoted Acting Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director. According to them, since then all their profits are going into payment of electric bills. For instance, they said that MD metre which Eko electric gave free of charge to their consumers, Ikeja Electric under Madame Onyelucha is asking for more than two million naira from their own consumers. A general manager of a pizza company in Ajao Estate who does not want to be mentioned because of victimization said that due to constant power outage they spend more on diesel and also spend more on the maintenance of diesel generators and other machineries like air conditioners, and dough chillers. He also said that poor power supply prevents them from preserving perishable consumable items which add to more cost for them. According to him, at times they bring high voltage which destroys their ovens, bulbs, chillers and air conditioners. His words, “The biggest problem that is affecting our businesses right now is Ikeja Electric. Their new Acting Chief Executive Officer /Managing Director,Madame Ogochukwu Onyelucha does not want business owners under Ikeja Electric to breathe. Every day she is suffocating us with outrageous charges. For instance, Eko Electric gave out MD metres for free to their consumers but she is insisting that we must buy it for more than two million naira. We are experiencing epileptic power supply but yet paying outrageous bills every month and if you delay in paying, her boys would disconnect you. They don’t want to know how our businesses are faring. That is the reason why businesses are packing up on a daily basis and because we are not making profits, we are no longer employing.” On what he felt could be done to ameliorate the tough business situation, he said that if businesses must survive, Ikeja Electric must be sensitive to the plight of the businesses owners under them. According to him, power supply should be stable, at least 18 hours a day and of regular voltage so that it would not be destroying their equipment. He also said there would adequate maintenance of the transformer and cables on the part of Ikeja Electric. SOURCE: https://vop.ng/how-ikeja-electric-is-killing-businesses/

Chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and the party’s Lagos Central senatorial candidate, Barrister Ladipo Johnson, on Monday, criticised Nigeria’s National Assembly, alleging that lawmakers have abandoned their constitutional oversight role and become complicit in actions that weaken accountability and public trust. Speaking during VOP This Morning's program on Voice of the People TV, Barrister Johnson claimed some lawmakers were prioritising political interests over their constitutional responsibility of checking executive excesses. According to him, repeated extensions of the implementation period for the capital component of the national budget reflected broader concerns around fiscal discipline and institutional independence. “A lot of our members of the House of Reps and Senate have turned themselves into an extension of the executive arm of government. They don't perform their oversight functions properly, and Nigerians are fast losing confidence in them as well,” he said. Mr Johnson added that recurring adjustments to budget timelines should trigger stronger public conversations around accountability and public finance management. “The good thing, not deviating from what you've said, is that you see that you've extended your capital aspect of your budget for the third time in a row. So it shows that there's no fiscal responsibility. A lot of things seem to be happening that have not come to the fore yet,” he stated. He also expressed concern about what he described as public desensitisation to governance and security challenges. “Whether it will work or not is a different thing. Nigerians are numb even to kidnappings now, unfortunately. We have been battered, we have been dealt with by the people we elected. “If the same people who have not accounted to you for four years are reelected, then they have no reason to then account to you.” Oshiomhole, anti-graft institutions raised Also speaking during the programme, member of the African Democratic Congress, Dr. Dayo Kayode alleged that public institutions responsible for oversight and accountability require stronger independence. Dr. Kayode claimed that lawmakers sometimes resist internal scrutiny and referenced discussions involving Adams Oshiomhole and oversight conversations around the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. “There is no way that we can run away from the fact that our elected officers are just there to milk our commonwealth brazenly. “Look at the one that just happened between the Senate and the NNPC, to the extent that even Oshiomhole, who was trying to bring up a lot of issues, was now being connived against by his colleagues,” he said. Dr. Kayode further called for reforms within anti-corruption and security institutions, arguing that stronger institutional independence would improve public trust. He referenced public discussions surrounding allegations involving former Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa. “Our EFCC and DSS must be overhauled too. They must have their independence because if they are being controlled by the executive, there’s no way they’ll be able to work,” he said. Responding to allegations linking part of the funds under public discussion to the 2023 presidential campaign of Atiku Abubakar, Dr. Kayode questioned whether allegations had translated into proven wrongdoing. “A lot of allegations have been put on Atiku’s lap, but which of them have been proven?” he said.
