My current job doesn't have a lot to do with my research interest. I work on psychiatry and cancer projects at work; PhD offer is in my primary area of interest i.e. immunity and infectious disease (http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/funding/biomedical-science/funding-schemes/phd-funding-and-undergraduate-opportunities/wtd004384.htm)- for people interested.

I'm leaning more towards leaving my current job but I'm worried a PhD may take my career in a different direction (academia)- which I don't want.

Hmmmmm....I just think the PHD offer has a lotta benefits ranging from the opportunity to explore other areas different from your present job etc.
Whether you like it or not the fact is that even your current job is academic focused and a PHD in immunity and infectious disease would make you more competitive and may be dynamic/flexible. I don't know if its poSsible to integrate your research experience in cancer with new PHD experience in immunity and infectious diseases....I really think the PHD tin makes more sense...buh still looking forward to hear more views from you
TV/Movies / Re: Teju Babyface Show Or Time-Out With Tee-a? by deolub: 12:27pm On Oct 31, 2012
Apparently, both of them are direct copy cats of foreign shows...buh the idea is Teju Babyface added some ginger and concepts more appealing to naija people especially the lagosians and thus always making sense every episode...buh this Tee A show hen...I appreciate the fact that he is talented and trying his best...I don't seem to find his program interesting cos its too direct

You're right although it takes 4 years to complete a PhD and I'm wondering where I could be in 4 years time if I just continue the job. I miss working on my own research, which is why I'm considering d a PhD. The prospects on my current job is good- I'd like to hear from people that have been in a similar situation.

Yea bro...I think I understand what you mean...and that is why I suggest people like @tanimola @ajanlekoko et al to address it...please can you tell us the discipline or your research interest(I mean your current job) and the Phd course we are talking about cos certain specialization dwells more on experience for professional growth....and of course I believe you applied for the Phd scholarship as well+ the fact that its in a top 2 UK university...that was why I support the idea of you going for the Phd
Career / Re: Full Phd Scholarship Or Keep Job? by deolub: 10:35am On Oct 31, 2012
Since you have gotten to this stage...I really support the fact that you should take the PHD scholarship offer...cos the PHD will allow you to improve your expertise even though its research and academic focused..trust me a job will always come after PHD...buh am sure ppl like @ajanlekoko and @tanimola are in good position to analyse this critically....

Career / Re: Have You Noticed That Nigeria Has No Respect For Education. by deolub: 9:59pm On Sep 30, 2012
Inova: Does it bother you or is it just me. Have you noticed that in Nigeria it seems the more you seek education, the higher your chances of being unemployed.
To be a politician: Minimum education is pry 6
Salary package: stupiiiiddd money money$

To be a fresh graduate employee: minimum of BSc second class upper
Salary Package: God help us ??

So now at least we see a reason for our backwardness.

Oga don't be defensive joor ...initially you were comparing education wiv politics and now entertainment the fact is a lot of Nigerians are into politics, entertainment and are yet to make a living out of it after years of hardworks....if Tuface tells you his story am sure u will even be more discouraged...so nothing in Nigeria comes easy getting a job, becoming a politician...becoming a Dbanj et al. You ve gat to keep pushing and trusting God...God help us

AjanleKoko:

It's better to study one of the generic engineering disciplines. You can easily fit into any industry, not just agric-related.
But not to worry. It doesn't really matter what you study at bachelors' these days. You can do just about anything else, after you're done with that foundation. Just try and figure out what you really want to do.

Yes boss gaskiya you said everything...just that he should make sure he graduate wiv a very good result....minimum of second class upper...its very important with that am sure you can fit in anywhere at the entry level
Career / Re: Footballers Vs Oil Workers by deolub: 1:26pm On Sep 30, 2012
I really think it depends on your own definition of a better career...buh apparently the reward, fame et al that comes with being a footballer surpasses that of Oil and Gas by every standard....
In addition to that, football is highly competitive...and you may waste over 2 decades playing football and of course no one gives a damn about you .....so the choice is urs

@ajanlekoko lol...leave the guy nau make him stop school then...most peeps have forgotten that the fad of politicians amassing public fund will soon be over...infact a time is coming that nigerians will vote leaders based on the values we fink they can add to the country...I see a better Nigeria
Career / Re: Agricultural Enginering Companies In Nigeria by deolub: 12:43pm On Sep 30, 2012
If you can change please work towards that...except if agricultural engineering is what you really have passion for....as for coys...where agricultural engineer is needed...apart from research institutes like IITA and feed mills...I remember vividly coys like flour mills asking people wiv background in agric engineering to apply for positions like milling engineers...etc..buh the main thing is for you to do your research very well and of course come out with a good grade....!!!!!
Career / Re: Structural Engineering In Nigeria by deolub: 4:09pm On Sep 29, 2012
Trust me that is a vey good ambition....even apart from great financial benefits that comes relatively with experience and networking there is a feeling of achievement that comes with every sucessful/Existing project you ve designed and probably supervised...However, your cousin has to really convince employers and clients that he is really interested in structural engineering by starting with a PGD in civil engineering + an Msc in structural engineering....Its a good profession just that initially rewards may not be coming forth ....buh after 3-5yrs of experience and recognition...he will be fine....its ma profession tho...buh am planning to explore business related career...

Career / Re: Building A Career In Investment Banking: Please Advice by deolub: 4:32pm On Sep 04, 2012
AjanleKoko:

I was referring to the 'fad', not the profession itself. Investment banking can't die, for obvious reasons.
The point is, most young people, especially young Nigerians, are drawn to the profession due to the purported high bonuses and wages, and the celebrity status most top bankers enjoyed some years back. It's the fad that I think will soon be dead.

With the current market factors, expect tighter regulations. Only the very serious and well-established players will likely remain. My view.

Hmmm thats quite insightful.....Kudos baba...

The issue is not tution free school as there is a thousand of them. the issue is can you afford the living expenses necessary to be granted a visa to study. think about this.
