Nigeria needs stability and men of ability, and it behoves us as a nation to tread with caution at this critical time of our national life. Institutions such as the Legislature should not be trifled with because of partisan considerations. “I will not stand idly by while some persons try, both home and abroad, to destroy an institution I was once proudly a part of. I am a Nigerian, who is proud of Nigeria, and will give my all to protect and project my country to the world. “I give him my right hand of fellowship and stand firmly with him. Recall that in recent times, the use of the traditional passwords or passcodes for authentications emerged as a new switch to passkeys. Google in a bid to tighten up both mobile and general security decided to shift from SMS code authentication to QR codes scanning. Google further explained that the reason for ditching the SMS code authentication for QR codes scanning is to reduce the unnecessary impact of ‘sms abuse’. I understand the news of this emerging shift might feel unnecessary to a number of gmail users, who would prefer the conventional way of receiving authentication codes for verification. However, Google took all these into consideration, by explaining the reasons and why it’s going to be of utmost advantage to the end users. An example of this, as provided by Google, was when criminals create thousands of Gmail accounts in order to distribute spam and malware. Reason Behind Gmail’s Ditching Of SMS Code For QR Codes SMS codes pose significant security risks, as highlighted by Richendrfer and his colleague, Kimberly Samra at Google. These codes are vulnerable to phishing attacks, users may not always have access to the device receiving the codes, and their security is dependent on the practices of the user’s mobile carrier. “If a fraudster can easily deceive a carrier into taking control of someone’s phone number,” Richendrfer explained, “the security value of SMS is completely undermined.” Additionally, SMS verification codes are frequently exploited in various criminal activities. One emerging scam that Google has identified over the past few years is known as traffic pumping. This scheme is also referred to as artificial traffic inflation or toll fraud, but the underlying method remains consistent. Richendrfer and Samra further added: “It’s where fraudsters try to get online service providers to originate large numbers of SMS messages to numbers they control, thereby getting paid every time one of these messages is delivered." Alausa stated that phasing out the 6-3-3-4 model and substituting a 12-4 will transform education in Nigeria to accord with "global standards." Nigeria uses the 6-3-3-4 education system, where a kid begins school at six and completes six years of primary and secondary education before turning 18. According to Alausa, the administration is seeking clearance from the NCE to designate 16 as the minimum entry age for academic institutions. He stated that integrating secondary schools into basic education would provide pupils continuous learning until they reached 16. A pregnant woman in Imo State died after a doctor allegedly performed a Caesarean Section (CS) on her using a YouTube video. In a social media video, the deceased's spouse, Onyekachi Eze, was brought by renowned Nollywood producer Stanley Ontop to the Imo Police Command on Tuesday to report the crime. This was made known to the public in a post by Nollywood producer Stanley Ontop. Onyekachi Eze, the deceased's husband, revealed the sad story in a video on Tuesday. Eze revealed that the incident occurred at Lebechi Hospital in Owerri, Imo State's capital. Eze narrated the incident. “I carried my wife to the hospital when she was in labour, and the doctor said she needed to undergo an operation because she was bleeding. “So the female doctor called another doctor to come and operate on her. Right in my presence, they were using their phones to watch a YouTube video on how to perform surgery, and I lost my wife and my baby during the process.” Shortly after the report, Stanley shared an updated video showing how the police arrested the owner of the hospital after the doctors absconded. According to the most recent report from Musk's super PAC, the giveaways cost him more than $50 million out of the $290 million he spent on the 2024 race. Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has dismissed raising VAT. The forum announced this after its Thursday, January 16, meeting in Abuja. The governors also expressed their confidence in the tax reform bills, which are now being voted upon by the National Assembly. However, in one of these tax reforms, the federal government suggested increasing the VAT rate from 7.5% to 10%, which they opposed. "The transition is too soon," they said. In its statement, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Kwara State governor and chairman of the NGF, suggested a balanced distribution formula for the value-added tax. The governors argued that the new VAT-sharing formula needed to ensure a proportionate distribution of funds: 50 per cent for equality, 30 per cent for derivation and 20 per cent for the population. Members concluded there was no need to raise the VAT rate or CIT at this stage as it was not needed for economic stability. To maintain the public interest and promote agricultural production, the Forum proposed that necessities and farming products should continue to be exempt from VAT, as one of the communiqué suggests. The Presidential Tax Reform Committee and Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) held meetings on January 16 2025, to address key national issues, including tax and fiscal reforms in Nigeria. We reached the following resolutions: The Forum reiterated its full support for reforming Nigeria’s outdated tax system. Members understood the importance of revising the tax code to boost fiscal stability and adhere to international best practices. To ensure a fair resource distribution, the Forum implemented a new Value Added Tax (VAT) sharing formula based on 20% population, 30% derivation and 50% equality. The meeting requested that the legislation relating to development levies be shared without a terminal clause for TETFUND, NASENI, and NITDA. The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) said the meeting will "guarantee that the legislative process in the National Assembly will now end with the eventual passage of the Tax Reform Bills."
