Following the allegation of impeachment against the American President, Barack Obama, the Republicans have denied the move, insisting they have no plans to begin impeachment proceedings against President Barack Obama, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner declared on Tuesday, putting the blame on Democrats for stirring up pre-midterm election tensions in Washington. Boehner is, however, hoping this week to pass Republican legislation that would authorize a lawsuit, claiming Obama overstepped his powers in ordering unilateral changes to his landmark healthcare law known as “Obamacare.” The speaker said any such lawsuit could take years to wind through the court system. Meanwhile, Obama is weighing whether to take executive action to scale back deportations of some undocumented residents, a move that would further ratchets up tensions with Republicans, who have blocked comprehensive changes to U.S. immigration law, insisting the president take stronger action to stop the flow of illegal migrants. He further said that “We have no plans to impeach the president. We have no future plans,” Boehner said in response to a reporter’s question. He however noted that it was the Democrats themselves who have been raising the notion of a Republican impeachment effort, using it to incite liberal voters and win campaign contributions for Democratic candidates running for re-election to Congress in November. Last week, White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer told reporters that unilateral action by Obama on immigration reform “will certainly up the likelihood that they (Republicans) would consider impeachment.” Since Obama’s first term, some conservative Republicans have mused about impeachment, which would be the initial step in a two-step process that allows Congress to remove a sitting president. Under the U.S. Constitution, if the House were to approve articles of impeachment, the Senate would then have to vote on whether to convict the president of any charges brought by the House and thus remove him from office. The last effort to impeach a president came in 1998 and 1999, when Republicans attempted to remove President Bill Clinton from office on perjury and obstruction of justice charges in connection with his relationship with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The Senate failed to achieve the two-thirds majority needed to remove Clinton, and the episode caused enough negative fallout to allow Democrats to win back five Senate seats in the 2000 election, wiping out a Republican majority. http://www.channelstv.com/2014/07/30/congress-denies-impeachment-move-obama/ |
BY NOAH EBIJE, KADUNA ON JULY 31, 2014 · POLITICS The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) yesterday kicked against the proposed Niger Delta youth rally slated for today in Abuja to support President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2015 re-election bid. A statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim, said the rally was ill-timed and ill-advised, considering the current security challenges facing the country, particularly the North. However, the ACF said if the solidarity rally must hold, the authorities should ensure that such event is properly guided to avoid any likely security breaches. The ACF said the mass movement of Nigerians from other parts of the country into Abuja at the time of the rally might cause security breaches and possibly be hijacked by hoodlums to wreak havoc including likely death and loss of property. Furthermore, such mass demonstration by some youths from certain sections of the country may portray them as insensitive to the plight of other Nigerians that have been under siege by terror attacks. “In as much as ACF is not against any peaceful rally or solidarity march by any group of persons in support of Mr. President or any cause, however, considering the insecurity in the country and in particular, the northern region, where there have been a spate of bomb blasts and attacks on innocent Nigerians. The forum considered it as ill-timed, ill-advised and a disregard to the feelings of other Nigerians affected by the insecurity challenges. “In view of this, ACF advises the authorities to ensure that such solidarity demonstrations are properly guided to avoid any likely security breaches. ACF equally appealed to the demonstrators to exercise caution and restrain in their utterances and actions in order not to insult the sensibilities of other Nigerians. “ACF calls on supporters of Mr. President wherever they are, to express such love and solidarity to Mr. President in their various domains rather than mass movement to Abuja, the federal capital,” the statement said. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=74601 |
