Romance / Re: 'Shoprite Road Girl': The Name Man Used In Saving Girlfriend's Number by DevelopNaija: 9:40pm On May 31, 2018
Lol. Very funny! But should that be a reason to break up? I mean, some people have their partner's name still stored same way as the first time they met. It should be something to laugh about and not the other way round. If she wasn't comfortable, she should have joked about it and changed it herself. If the man refuses or changes it back, then that's when she should become suspicious.

Literature / The Guy With Twelve Fingers And Twelve Toes by DevelopNaija: 1:38pm On May 31, 2018
During one of my volunteer outreaches, I met Idris who is blessed with twelve fingers and twelve toes. I was very amazed and that was my first (and still only time) I saw someone with extra body parts. Life is indeed full of wonders. Some people are looking for complete body parts, while some people have extra body parts.

My focus today is the beliefs/sentiments attached to a lot of things especially in Africa.

During my chat with Idris, he revealed that every member of his family is blessed with twelve fingers and twelve toes. For those who always attach spirituality to rare situations (no thanks to Nollywood movies), you would hear things like ‘Maybe his forefathers are cursed’ This is satanic’ ‘God-forbid bad thing’ ‘Go for deliverance, this is not ordinary’ ‘My child cannot marry someone like this oh!’ etc.

This equates the kind of sentiments/beliefs a lot of people upholds when it comes to the different situations impeding the growth and development in Nigeria. True change, growth and development begin from our mind-set. We need to change our mind-set on certain things for us to witness sustainable development in Nigeria.

Let me drop some of the beliefs/sentiments we should trash out for development in Nigeria to be fast-tracked.

1 . Religious Sentiments – (It is only a Muslim that will behave like this, Christians don’t. )
2. Christian Denomination Prejudice - (I can’t marry someone who doesn’t attend my church.)
3.Tribalism Brouhaha - (Is he Yoruba? Ah! I won’t vote for him.)
4. Gender Discrimination - (Over my dead body will I work under a female boss.)
5. Favouritism – (He is my brother, I can’t give this job to a stranger even if the stranger outperformed my brother)
6. Social media Ass-licking – (Why are you asking for his source of wealth? Broke people always have something to say. Mtcheeww!)

What other sentiments or beliefs should our minds be purged of, inorder to have a full cooperation of growth and development in Nigeria? Your comments will be appreciated.

Gbam i concur boss
relying on government to solve every problem in society inevitably leads to political disagreements about how to solve those problems. If everything in our lives becomes political, then there is no respite from the political. This can only increase the polarization of society, driving us nigerians farther into their respective bunkers.

Obviously, there is a proper role for government, and the limits of that role will always be the subject of political debate. But perhaps the next time we encounter a problem in society, we should think twice before asking government to solve it for us.

Thank you!
I think the earlier we stop depending on the government to solve our problems, the better we become in strategizing on how to make Nigeria become better without the government.

I believe is possible.

Good question asked there
But u know this is Nigeria everything u think right or that was supposed to be done its always the opposite , the country is faced with different problems so those returnees supposed to get help from the gov or able individuals but wallas this is 9ja its a secondry prob the gove or those who can donate dosent cares

Sad truth! It's high time we stopped waiting on only the Government to do everything! If we do, we will wait endlessly! Dear individuals and organisations, let us rise, take valuable actions and contribute sustainably (no matter how little) to the growth and development of Nigeria.

Moreso, in this coming election, we should vote leaders who have the vision for sustainable development, and prior, have contributed sustainably to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

Never let the name of a political party be a voting criterion, rather, the candidate's past and present contribution to sustainable development in Nigeria, should be the major factor!

Some people never learn!

It has nothing to do with 'some people never learn'. They know the path they are treading is suicidal.
You think if the government or financial capable individuals care, they'll think of going back?

In this county, we need to stop talking and apportioning blames, and start taking meaningful and valuable actions no matter how little it may appear.

Politics / Where Are The Libya Slavery Returnees? by DevelopNaija: 7:59pm On May 20, 2018
Last year, there was a viral video about the slave trade/inhumane treatment of Nigerians (mostly illegal migrants) in Libya. Virtually everyone who saw the video felt sorry for the Libya slavery victims and advocated for the safe return of these Nigerians back to Nigeria.

Nigerian celebrities posted clips of the slavery on social media, showing their sympathy and advocating for the end of Modern Day Slavery. Political figures aired their opinion and condemned the slavery. Others blamed certain individuals and bodies for the slavery. Political parties blamed their opponents for the slavery.

The slavery news then faded gradually and the media now barely covers anything relating to it. The big Questions are:

1. Did anything change?

2. Were there solutions implemented to curb the slavery and the incessant illegal migration?

A lot of people wrote: “This is injustice…” “It saddens my heart…” Nigerian lives matter….” “End modern slavery…”; But how many individuals, celebrities, political parties, influential figures and organisations took impactful actions to support the Libya returnees and/or discourage people who have thoughts of treading such path through empowerment? How many? I guess they aren’t even up to the total number of my fingers and toes.

“In foreign countries, especially western countries, you will see different people donating to these people that have been to hell and back. But black people, especially Nigerians, the only time you see them contributing massively is when they fund their pastor’s expensive lifestyle or on frivolous things that can never add value to the economy. They want everything to be the government. Before you ask, what about me? I’m also part of the problem, but at least I don’t get my priorities wrong and I contribute from the little I have.” – Expression of a concerned fellow.

In this county, we need to stop talking and apportioning blames, and start taking meaningful and valuable actions no matter how little it may appear.

You may say – “I don’t know any of the returnees’’, but what about those people around you who are desperately seeking for something engaging and meaningful to do? Who knows, their next plan could be illegal migration to Libya or another country. Right now, there are people who just left the country illegally for greener pastures.

Accolades goes to the few individuals and organisations that have secretly or openly empowered the slavery victims and those who are in desperate need of a better life.

We should stop waiting on only the Government to do everything! If we do, we will wait endlessly! Dear individuals and organisations, let us rise, take valuable actions and contribute sustainably (no matter how little) to the growth and development of Nigeria.

Don’t forget to vote leaders who have the vision for sustainable development, and prior, have contributed sustainably to Nigeria’s economic growth and development

What is your contribution towards empowering the Libya returnees and their counterparts? What is your contribution towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria? We would like to hear from you.

Education / 12 Simple SDG Contributions Every Nigerian Should Do For Nigeria by DevelopNaija: 3:35pm On Apr 18, 2018
SDG - Sustainable Development Goals

1. Shop Local. Supporting local businesses create decent work and economic growth.

2. Shop Smart – plan meals, use shopping lists and avoid impulse buys. Don’t succumb to marketing tricks that lead you to buy more food than you need, particularly for perishable items.

3. Buy Funny Fruit—many fruits and vegetables are thrown out because their size, shape, or color are not “right”. Buying these perfectly good funny fruit, at the farmer’s market or elsewhere, utilizes food that might otherwise go to waste.

4. Bike, walk or take public transport. Save the car trips for when you’ve got a big group.

5. Use refillable water bottles and cups. Cut down on waste and maybe even save money.

6. Bring your own bag when you shop. Pass on the plastic bag and start carrying your own reusable bags.

7. Take fewer napkins/serviette. You don’t need a handful of napkins to eat. Take just what you need.

8. Shop vintage/fairly used. Brand-new isn’t necessarily best. See what you can re-purpose from second-hand shops.

9. Maintain your car. A well-tuned car will emit fewer toxic fumes.

10. Donate what you don’t use. Local charities will give your gently used clothes, books and furniture a new life. (We can help you locate charity organisations you can donate your used stuff or even new ones)

11.Vaccinate yourself and your kids. Protecting your family from disease also aids public health.

12.Take advantage of your right to elect the leaders in your country and local community. (Vote for leaders who have ‘sustainable’ vision and goals)

Career / 16 Interesting Things To Do At Work As Your Contribution To SDG In Nigeria by DevelopNaija: 3:25pm On Apr 18, 2018
1. If you have a fruit, food or snack that you don’t want, don’t throw it out. Give it away to someone who needs and is asking for help.

2. Does everyone at work have access to healthcare? Find out what your rights are to work. Fight against inequality.

3. Mentor young people. It’s a thoughtful, inspiring and a powerful way to guide someone towards a better future.

4. Women earn 10 to 30 per cent less than men for the same work. Pay inequality persists everywhere. Voice your support for equal pay for equal work.

5. 4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services. Lend your voice to talk about the lack of toilets in many communities around the world!

6. Make sure your company uses energy efficient heating and cooling technology.

7. Does your company invest in clean and resilient infrastructure? It is the only way to keep workers safe and protect the environment.

8. Raise your voice against any type of discrimination in your office. Everyone is equal regardless of their gender, race, sexual orientation, social background and physical abilities.

9. Bike, walk or take public transport to work. Save the car trips for when you’ve got a big group.

10. Organize a ‘SDG Week’ work. Learn to live more sustainably for at least a week.

11. Speak up! Ask your company to engage in initiatives that will not harm people or the planet.

12. Examine and change everyday decisions. Can you recycle at your workplace? Is your company buying from merchants engaging in harmful ecological practices?

13. Know your rights at work. In order to access justice knowing what you are entitled to will go a long way.

14. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) counts! Encourage your company to find ways to help local communities achieve the goals.

Nairaland / General / 15 Stress-free Things Every Nigerian Should Do At Home As A Contribution To SDG by DevelopNaija: 4:11pm On Apr 13, 2018
1. Air dry. Let your hair and clothes dry naturally instead of running a machine.

2. Take short showers. Bathtubs require gallons more water than a 5-10 minute shower.

3. Eat less meat, poultry, and fish. More resources are used to provide meat than plants.

4. Freeze fresh produce and leftovers if you don’t have the chance to eat them before they go bad.

5. Compost—composting food scraps can reduce climate impact while also recycling nutrients.

6. Recycling paper, plastic, glass & aluminium keeps landfills from growing.

7. Buy minimally packaged goods.

8. Avoid pre-heating the oven. Unless you need a precise baking temperature, start heating your food right when you turn on the oven.

9. Plug air leaks in windows and doors to increase energy efficiency.

10. Replace old appliances with energy efficient models and light bulbs.

11. If you have the option, install solar panels in your house. This will also reduce your electricity bill!

12. Get a rug. Carpets and rugs keep your house warm.

13. Don’t rinse. If you use a dishwasher, stop rinsing your plates before you run the machine.

14. Choose a better diaper option. Swaddle your baby in cloth diapers or a new, environmentally responsible disposable brand.

15. Use cardboard matches. They don’t require any petroleum, unlike plastic gas-filled lighters.

Nairaland / General / 10 Effortless Things You Can Do In Your Sitting Room As Your Contribution To SDG by DevelopNaija: 4:00pm On Apr 13, 2018
1. Save electricity by plugging appliances into a power strip and turning them off completely when not in use, including your computer.

2. Stop paper bank statements and pay your bills online or via mobile. No paper, no need for forest destruction.

3. Share, don’t just like. If you see an interesting social media post about women’s rights or climate change, share it so folks in your network see it too.

4. Speak up! Ask your local and national authorities to engage in initiatives that don’t harm people or the planet.

5. Don’t print. See something online you need to remember? Jot it down in a notebook or better yet a digital post-it note and spare the paper.

6. Turn off the lights. Your TV or computer screen provides a cosy glow, so turn off other lights if you don’t need them.

7. Do a bit of online research and buy only from companies that you know have sustainable practices and don’t harm the environment.

8. Report online bullies. If you notice harassment on a message board or in a chat room, flag that person.

9. Stay informed. Follow your local news and stay in touch with the Global Goals.

10.Tell us about your actions to achieve the global goals by using the hashtag – #globalgoals on social networks.
