Roberto Martinez's Belgium squad is packed with world class stars, including the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. Belgium, who come up against England in their final World Cup group game on June 28, head into the tournament as one of the favourites and they will be buoyed by the early results of Brazil, Germany and Spain. Here, Sportsmail assesses how Belgium's star-studded squad compares to that of their rivals... BELGIUM GOALKEEPERS The Red Devils have a strong goalkeeping unit and there will be a commanding presence between the posts this summer. Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois - who has established himself as one of the best in the world - will start in goal in Russia, with fellow Premier League player Simon Mignolet set to be No 2. Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League while Mignolet has plenty of experience playing on the big stage. Wolfsburg's Koen Casteels lacks the experience at the World Cup, having missed out through injury in 2014, but Roberto Martinez is very unlikely to have to call on him. RATING: 7/10 DEFENCE In the heart of defence, Belgium really are not short of options. Kompany, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Thomas Vermaelen provide the team with a watertight structure at the back. Paris Saint-Germain's Thomas Meunier will provide the width down the right and is never afraid to get forward when the opportunity arises. Belgium may struggle down the left though, with Atletico Madrid's Yannick Carrasco recently being deployed in an unusual position of wing-back in the country's pre-World Cup friendlies. And Kompany's injury woes — which mean he will not feature until the final group game — could be an issue. RATING: 8/10 MIDFIELD Belgium's midfield is where the magic really comes from. With Kevin De Bruyne and Alex Witsel in the heart of midfield, they will certainly not lack the drive or creativity to unlock defences. And with deadly Chelsea star Eden Hazard on the wing, Belgium will have a constant threat from the middle of the park. While not everything has fluently ticked in recent major tournaments, you would expect them to come out of the blocks in emphatic fashion. With the likes of Mousa Dembele and Marouane Fellaini to chose from, Martinez also has the option of power, strength and aerial prowess when his side come up against a more robust country. RATING: 9/10 ATTACK With De Bruyne, Hazard and Co feeding the balls through to Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, there should be goals galore for Belgium. Lukaku, who became Belgium's all-time top goalscorer at the tender age of 24, will cause defences a host of problems with his aerial and finishing ability. Furthermore, Martinez can also call on Napoli's Dries Mertens and Chelsea's Michy Batshuayi. They are definitely not short of firepower up top. RATING: 7/10 OVERALL RATING: 31/40 GERMANY GOALKEEPERS Manuel Neuer's return to fitness just in time for the eagerly-anticipated tournament would have come as a huge boost to the reigning World Cup champions. Concerns will linger over his fitness as the Bayern Munich goalkeeper only recently just returned to action after having not played since September with a fractured metatarsal in his left foot. However, despite his lack of game time, he was in decent form as Germany shockingly lost to Mexico on Sunday. Germany have potentially the strongest goalkeeping depth at the World Cup, with Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Paris Saint-Germain's Kevin Trapp behind Neuer in the pecking order. RATING: 9/10 DEFENCE On paper, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng should have provided know-how to keep them tight down the middle. That was not the case against Mexico on Sunday, as they struggled defensively. Other than Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger and the two names mentioned above however, Germany lack any real sort of experience at the back. Joshua Kimmich, who started at right-back, enjoyed a fine season for Bayern Munich as they won the Bundesliga for a sixth season running. But he was regularly caught out of position against Mexico. Matthias Ginter, Jonas Hector, Marvin Plattenhardt and Niklas Sule make up the rest of Germany's defence. RATING: 6/10 MIDFIELD The fact that Joachim Low left out Manchester City star Leroy Sane from his 23-man squad should have been a massive testament to Germany's incredible strength in depth. The Germans, who beat Argentina in the 2014 final in Brazil, have world class players all over the shop in midfield, including Mesut Ozil, Ilkay Gundogan, Toni Kroos and Julian Draxler. But their struggles, especially on the part of Draxler, against Mexico means the absence of Sane has been questioned. Germany have a mix of real efficiency, pace and technical ability across the midfield and their players will no doubt create a host of chances for their team-mates. And they could impress if Germany turn their form around following their shock opening loss. RATING: 7.5/10 ATTACK A forward quartet of Thomas Muller, Timo Werner, Marco Reus and Mario Gomez gives Joachim Low options. Werner, who has become a target for Liverpool, led the line against Mexico following a fine season for RB Leipzig, where he scored 13 goals in Bundesliga. Muller scored five goals at the last World Cup and has the ability to run defences ragged with his exceptional positioning and poaching. Meanwhile, Reus and Gomez also have quality in abundance. They did not impress in the opener though and will need to improve as the tournament rolls on. RATING: 8/10 OVERALL RATING: 30.5/40 FRANCE GOALKEEPERS The goalkeeping department is the one area where France lack any real strength in depth. Hugo Lloris is the nailed on No 1 and lacks any real competition from the other two keepers. Steve Mandanda of Marseille and Alphonse Areola of Paris Saint-Germain are France's No 2 and 3 respectively in Russia this summer. Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris can produce some spectacular saves in between the sticks, with his main attribute being his pace coming off his line. RATING: 7/10 DEFENCE With an Achilles injury ruling Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny out of the tournament, Samuel Umtiti will partner Raphael Varane in the heart of defence for France. The pair's key attributes are their pace and strength and Didier Deschamps will be very confident they can keep attacks at bay. There will have been disappointment at Umtiti giving away a penalty in the fashion he did against Australia. France will also have a very strong balance at the back. With Umtiti and Varane keeping things tight, Djibril Sidibe and Benjamin Mendy can provide a blistering attacking threat down the flanks. Furthermore, with youngsters like Benjamin Pavard and Presnel Kimpembe in reserve, France's defence is full of energy and enthusiasm. RATING: 7.5/10 MIDFIELD France have the opportunity to run their World Cup opponents into the ground in midfield this summer. With Paul Pogba, N'Golo Kante and Corentin Tolisso lining up alongside each other as a three, France have everything: pace, power, strength, technical and aerial ability, as well as solidity. Deschamps also has Blaise Matuidi and the ever-reliable Steven N'Zonzi at his disposal from the bench. However, much of the country's success depends on Pogba, who has recently struggled for form at Manchester United. He did impress on Saturday, having a role to play in both goals as France beat Australia 2-1. RATING: 8/10 ATTACK France, who face Peru and Denmark next, should flourish in attack with a host of huge names up top. Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe are certain starters for France, while Ousmane Dembele got the nod ahead of Olivier Giroud for their first game. In each game, France will have a brilliant impact substitute to bring on depending on who Didier Deschamps picks. Nabil Fekir, Thomas Lemar and Florian Thauvin are further options from the bench and can make a big difference. RATING: 9/10 OVERALL RATING: 31.5/40 SPAIN GOALKEEPERS 2010 World Cup winners Spain would have been confident with their goalkeeping options heading into the tournament, with David de Gea, alongside Neuer as the best keeper in world football, their No 1. But the Manchester United man showed a surprising amount of frailty as he made an error for one of Portugal's goals on Friday night. He palmed a Cristiano Ronaldo strike into the back of his own net. If De Gea is absent for any reason, Spain have the luxury to call on either the experienced Pepe Reina or Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has previously attracted interest from Real Madrid. RATING: 8.5/10 DEFENCE With Sergio Ramos leading at the back alongside Gerard Pique, Spain are certainly not be short of experience and winners in defence. The Barcelona and Real Madrid duo were both part of the squad that won the World Cup in South Africa and will provide huge experience to those at their first summer tournament. Spain are well-covered on both defensive flanks, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Dani Carvajal down the right and Jordi Alba and Nacho Monreal on the left. RATING: 9/10 MIDFIELD They may be missing Xavi and have a soon-to-be retired international Andres Iniesta in their ranks but creative Spanish sparks will still be aplenty in Russia. With Sergio Busquets, who very much has an eye for a pass, holding the fort in front of the back four, the likes of Iniesta, David Silva, Thiago Alcantara and Isco can very much work their magic in attacking positions. Saul Niguez and Koke make up the rest of the midfield and have the technical ability to walk straight into the formidable Spain squad. RATING: 9/10 ATTACK With Alvaro Morata missing out, Diego Costa heads into the biggest tournament in football as Spain's only really out-and-out striker. Costa led the line well when they came up against Euro 2016 champions Portugal, scoring twice. The hugely exciting Madrid youngster Marco Asensio is also set to have an important role in Lopetegui's side. However, other than that, Spain lack any real excitement in attack, with Iago Aspas, Rodrigo Moreno and Lucas Vazquez the other forward players. RATING: 7.5/10 OVERALL RATING: 34/40 ARGENTINA GOALKEEPERS Argentina are the only top six nation who lack a real world class goalkeeper in their squad at the World Cup. After Sergio Romero withdrew from the squad with a knee injury, it has left them with Chelsea No 2 Willy Caballero, Franco Armani from River Plate and Nahuel Guzman as their three options. Caballero started in goal for Argentina, which says a lot about their shortage of depth with him struggling to get game time at Chelsea. RATING: 6/10 DEFENCE Again in defence, Jorge Sampaoli's side are undercooked compared to their World Cup rivals in Russia. Federico Fazio, Nicolas Otamendi, Javier Mascherano and Marcos Rojo may have the experience on the big stage but they all have an error within them. Argentina, who lost to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final, have the likes of Gabriel Mercado, Nicolas Taglafico, Marcos Acuna and Cristian Ansaldi as full back options. Despite strength in numbers, Argentina lack a real leader at the back and could easily come undone against the stronger sides. They even managed to concede against Iceland. RATING: 6.5/10 MIDFIELD We are starting to get to the business end of Argentina's squad. In midfield, their star attraction is Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria, who played in a more forward-thinking role. They may be missing Manuel Lanzini through a torn ACL in his right knee, but they still have the safe options of Ever Banega, Lucas Biglia, Giovani Lo Celso. While they may not be the star names Argentina have become accustomed to, the midfield can create plenty of chances for their world class strikers. And if Argentina want a bit more steel in midfield, then utility man Mascherano may well be deployed there. RATING: 7.5/10 ATTACK Argentina arguably have the best attack in the competition with Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero all at Sampaoli's disposal. In Messi, Argentina have the best player in world football, while Aguero and Higuain are out-and-out strikers who score goals for fun. Meanwhile, Juventus star Dybala, who has been tipped to become one of the best player's in world football, can be the creative spark in attack for Argentina and can unlock defences for fun. But they did struggle in part against Iceland, and ended up dropping points because Messi could not convert a penalty. RATING: 9.5/10 OVERALL RATING: 29.5/40 BRAZIL GOALKEEPERS Brazil manager Tite will have very much enjoyed the battle between Ederson and Alisson - two of the very best goalkeepers within the game - for the No 1 spot this summer. Liverpool target Alisson started against Switzerland, with Manchester City man Ederson as No 2 and Cassio being third choice. Alisson should line up with an experienced defence in front of him so Brazil shouldn't be too troubled in goal, especially during the earlier stages. They did not concede many chances against Switzerland, although Alisson might have done better for the shock equaliser. RATING: 9/10 DEFENCE Tournament favourites Brazil have an experienced defence, led by skipper Thiago Silva. The PSG man had Miranda alongside him in the heart of defence. Brazil also have Marquinhos to call in as a centre back. Miranda did struggle when defending against Steven Zuber for Switzerland's equaliser. Brazil have plenty of options to call on at full back, with Marcelo and Danilo set to be deployed as left back and right back respectively. While Brazil are known for their attacking flair, they also have a stubborn defence that can limit the impact of their opposition forwards. RATING: 8/10 MIDFIELD Real Madrid star Casemiro, who has turned into one of the best holding midfielders, is the enforcer for Tite, allowing his more attacking team-mates to flourish in front of him. Due to Casemiro's presence in front of the defence, Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho have the luxury to play their own game. The pair both offer completely different attributes, with Paulinho providing his lung-bursting runs and Coutinho his brilliant range of passing. Coutinho also whipped in a sensational long-range goal against Switzerland to give Brazil the lead. Tite can also call on the likes of Fernandinho, Douglas Costa, Fred and Co in midfield. Not bad at all. RATING: 9/10 ATTACK Goals, goals, goals. That's what many expected from Brazil in Russia. With Neymar, Gabriel Jesus, Roberto Firmino and Taison in attack, the Selecao should be an attacking threat. They were restricted against Switzerland and failed to turn early dominance into three points. The world's most expensive player, Neymar, lined-up in his usual position on the left, with Willian favoured on the right. Neymar was a slightly subdued figure during the opener on Sunday. That leaves Jesus and Firmino fighting to lead the line but the Manchester City striker got the nod against Switzerland. RATING: 9/10 OVERALL RATING: 35/40 SO HOW DO THE BIG SIX RANK? It's Brazil who come out on top thanks to their talented and balanced overall squad. Their rivals Argentina bring up the rear; while they're overloaded with talent up top, they are certainly lacking at the back. Belgium have an excellent starting XI but lack depth in places. European rivals Spain and France round off the top three behind the Selecao. 1) BRAZIL: 35/40 2) SPAIN: 34/40 3) FRANCE: 31.5/40 4) BELGIUM: 31/40 5) GERMANY: 30.5/40 6) ARGENTINA: 29.5/40 http://www.footballbase.info/2018/06/world-cup-2018-best-teams.html?m=1

Hannes Thor Halldorsson's homework paid off as he saved a penalty from Lionel Messi to help Iceland clinch an unlikely point against Argentina. Goalkeeper Halldorsson dived to his right to turn away Messi's spot-kick as an eventful Group D opener at the 2018 World Cup finished in a 1-1 draw. Sergio Aguero's left-footed drive put Argentina ahead in the first half, only for debutants Iceland to hit back four minutes later with a goal from Alfred Finnbogason, the country's first at a World Cup. Messi had the chance to put the South American nation back in front after a foul on Maximiliano Meza, but Halldorsson's guessed correctly to deny the Barcelona forward. "For me, as a goalkeeper, to play for Iceland at the first game of the World Cup and face the best player in the world with a penalty, it's a big moment," he told the media. "It's a dream come true to save it, especially as it got us a point that I hope is going to prove important for us to reach our goal and qualify [for the knockout stages]. "I did some homework. This was a situation I knew could come up. "I looked at a lot of penalties from Messi, and I also looked at my behaviour in the last couple of penalties I've faced. "I tried to get into the minds and what they'd be thinking about me - I had a good feeling he was going to go that way today." Heimir Hallgrimsson's side struggled for possession but defended impressively to frustrate one of the leading contenders to lift the World Cup on Russian soil. "Our gameplan worked really well," Halldorsson added. "We could feel it in the first half that the game was playing out as we wanted it to. They were playing the game in front of us, never having a lot of space. "Our confidence grew minute by minute, because you never know what is going to happen in a game against Argentina. We felt that as time grew, we had them where we wanted them. "They maybe grew a bit frustrated as they weren't getting through. We equalised so early too, which was important for the development of the game. I guess our plan worked perfectly." http://www.footballbase.info/2018/06/icelands-goal-keeper-claims-he-did-his.html

Mohamed Salah has been declared fit to face Russia in Egypt's second game at the World Cup match by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), who confirmed he could have featured in the 1-0 defeat to Uruguay but was not risked. Liverpool forward Salah recovered from the shoulder injury he sustained in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid just in time to be named to the roster for Egypt, with the attacker believing he would ready for the opener. Egypt's national team head coach Hector Cuper also declared his confidence Salah would feature against Uruguay, saying he could assure reporters that it was near "100 per cent" that he would play. However, Salah was an unused substitute as Egypt were undone by a Jose Gimenez header in the 89th minute in Ekaterinburg, where Marwan Mohsen laboured on his own in attack for Cuper's side. After the match Cuper claimed while Salah would have a welcome addition, he did not want to take any risks with his star man and stated his belief Salah would feature in future contests. With a crucial match up on Tuesday with tournament hosts Russia, the EFA has echoed their coach, saying Salah ready to feature and dismissed the notion he was not healthy for the loss against Uruguay. "He was fit to play against Uruguay but the coach did not want to take the risk," said the EFA. Photos from Egypt training suggested Salah required the help of team-mates to put on a shirt, adding to the doubt surrounding the situation. Teams are permitted to pick all 23 players in their match-day suad, so there is no disadvantage to Egypt naming Salah to the roster, even if he is not fit to play. If he's fit, Salah's record-scoring prowess could prove key for Egypt as they face a Russia side who had no trouble finding the net in their opening match against Saudi Arabia, a 5-0 victory for the hosts. With the Russia's strong goal differential as a result of that match, the Pharaohs may well need all three points to keep them in contention for the knock-out stage of the tournament. http://www.footballbase.info/2018/06/salah-declared-fit-to-face-russia-by.html
