JAMB Extends Deadline for Candidates to Accept or Reject 2021–2025 Admission Offers The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended the deadline for candidates with outstanding admission offers from the 2021 to 2025 admission exercises to accept or reject the offers. The new deadline is November 30, 2026, giving affected candidates an additional two months to update their admission status on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). JAMB had previously fixed September 30 as the deadline for candidates to take action on outstanding offers. The latest extension followed a temporary disruption of the CAPS platform, which was reportedly unavailable for about 96 hours. JAMB Warns Candidates Against Missing New Deadline The board described November 30 as the final deadline for candidates affected by the outstanding admission offers. Candidates who wish to retain their previous admission offers are expected to log into their CAPS accounts and accept them. Those who no longer want the offers can reject them so that JAMB can update its records. According to JAMB, candidates who accept their offers will be able to proceed with printing their admission letters. The board also explained that candidates who are no longer studying at the institutions where they were previously offered admission, or who have changed programmes, may accept the outstanding admission and subsequently apply for the appropriate correction or deletion where necessary. What Happens After November 30? JAMB warned that candidates who fail to either accept or reject their outstanding offers by the new deadline will have the admissions reverted to “Not Admitted” on the board’s records. Any subsequent request to update an admission record from the affected years will also attract the applicable penalty fee, according to the board. JAMB further assured candidates who have already secured admission for the 2026 academic session that rejecting an outstanding admission offer from an earlier year will not affect their current admission. The board urged all affected candidates to check their CAPS accounts and take the necessary action before the November 30 deadline. https://www.lagoslately.com/jamb-extends-deadline-for-2021-2025-admission-offers-to-november-30/

2027 Election Will Be Decided by Nigerians, Not Billionaires – Makinde The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has said the outcome of the 2027 presidential election will be determined by Nigerian voters rather than wealthy individuals or the amount of money spent on campaigns. Makinde made the statement on Monday at the APM North-Central Zonal Town Hall Meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, as part of the party’s engagements ahead of the 2027 election. The Oyo State governor, who is campaigning under the “Reset Nigeria” agenda, said he did not believe the election would be decided by political commentators, opinion polls, the number of billionaires supporting candidates or the financial resources available to political campaigns. According to him, the people of Nigeria would ultimately determine who emerges from the election. Makinde also criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the economy, arguing that increased allocations to states had not necessarily translated into reduced hardship for citizens. He acknowledged that states were receiving more money from the Federation Account but questioned whether the additional funds had resulted in meaningful progress in addressing hunger and other economic challenges. The governor also spoke about Nigeria’s security situation, questioning the budgetary planning behind the establishment of additional army divisions. He said he had examined the 2026 budget for provisions relating to the new formations but could not identify the funding he expected for them. Makinde outlines ‘Reset Nigeria’ agenda The APM presidential candidate said his proposed “Reset Nigeria” programme would focus on four major areas: security, education, the economy and the country’s socio-political environment. He said the programme could be implemented within four years if he becomes president, including changes to Nigeria’s security architecture and greater use of data and science in economic management. Makinde further said his administration would commence a transition to a government of national unity from May 29, 2027, which he said would eventually lead to what he described as “new players and a new agenda” for Nigeria’s development. The Lafia meeting formed part of the APM’s zonal consultations and political engagements ahead of the 2027 presidential election. https://www.lagoslately.com/2027-election-will-be-decided-by-nigerians-not-billionaires-makinde/

Nollywood has achieved another global milestone after Black Market, a Nigerian crime thriller, set a new Guinness World Records title for the largest audience at a film screening in a single location. The record was achieved on Saturday at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, where 51,000 qualifying viewers watched the movie from beginning to end. The turnout surpassed the previous record of 43,624 viewers, which was set in 2015 when Felix Manalo was screened at the Philippine Arena in the Philippines. Thousands of movie lovers began arriving at TBS hours before the screening, with long queues reported around the venue. The gates opened at about 2pm, while the main screening started around 7pm. Although Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat announced an attendance figure of 64,000, Guinness World Records clarified that only viewers who remained throughout the entire screening could be counted toward the record. This resulted in an official qualifying figure of 51,000. The announcement triggered celebrations at the venue, with cheers and fireworks as organisers and attendees marked the achievement. Black Market was directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and co-written by Gimsay and Abdul Tijani-Ahmed. The film follows five women involved in cross-border smuggling whose lives take a dramatic turn after the daughter of one of them is kidnapped. The movie features a cast including Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Lateef Adedimeji, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele D Icon, and Uzor Arukwe. The screening was organised by Rixel Studios in collaboration with FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production. The event also received support from the Lagos State Government through its Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. The achievement adds another notable chapter to Nollywood's growing international profile, turning a film premiere into a record-setting gathering of thousands of movie lovers in Lagos. https://www.lagoslately.com/nollywood-makes-history-as-black-market-sets-guinness-world-record-in-lagos/

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have begun their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The visitors took an early lead in the 16th minute when Clément Couturier headed Ryan Ponti’s cross beyond the Nigerian defence to put Madagascar 1-0 ahead. Nigeria responded with sustained pressure as George Ilenikhena came close on several occasions. The young forward eventually got his reward in first-half stoppage time after Alex Iwobi picked him out inside the box. Ilenikhena calmly placed the ball into the bottom-left corner to restore parity. The Super Eagles returned for the second half looking for a winner, with Ademola Lookman and Calvin Bassey both going close. Coach Eric Chelle then made changes, bringing on Moses Usor and Moses Simon in an attempt to add more attacking energy. The substitutions quickly paid off. In the 65th minute, Usor collected a pass from Semi Ajayi inside Nigeria’s half, drove forward past two Madagascar players and finished with his left foot to give Nigeria a 2-1 advantage. The goal marked an impressive competitive debut for the LASK winger. Madagascar refused to give up and created opportunities as they searched for an equaliser. Nigeria also had chances to extend their lead, but the Super Eagles ultimately held on to secure all three points. The victory gives Nigeria a positive start in Group L of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. Their next assignment will be an away match against Guinea-Bissau on September 29. The 2027 AFCON finals will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with Tanzania already assured of a place as one of the co-hosts. https://www.lagoslately.com/super-eagles-beat-madagascar-2-1-in-afcon-2027-qualifier-as-ilenikhena-usor-score/

Poland expects a decision on the establishment of a new permanent United States military base in the country before the end of 2026, following Washington’s ongoing review of its military presence in Europe. Polish Deputy Defence Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said the US review is expected to be completed in November or December, after which a decision on the proposed base could be made. She stressed, however, that the final decision rests with US President Donald Trump. Poland has already prepared a shortlist of possible locations for the proposed facility, although the government has not publicly disclosed the sites. The development follows growing efforts by Warsaw to strengthen its long-term military relationship with Washington. The United States currently has about 10,000 troops in Poland, most of whom are deployed on a rotational basis. US officials have also indicated that Washington is considering ways to strengthen its military presence in Poland. US Undersecretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby said the United States was actively working to reinforce its presence in the country, according to the report. US President Donald Trump had earlier said significant progress was being made towards establishing a new US Army base in Poland and suggested that its location could be announced soon. Polish officials have previously discussed a potential deployment of up to 15,000 American troops, combining permanently stationed personnel with troops deployed on rotation. The proposed base is part of Poland’s broader efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities and deepen cooperation with the United States amid heightened security concerns in Europe. Meanwhile, Poland is also awaiting a separate decision on its proposal to host a European service centre for PAC-3 missiles used in Patriot air-defence systems. Polish officials say domestic servicing could significantly reduce the time required to repair the missiles. https://www.lagoslately.com/poland-expects-decision-on-permanent-us-military-base-by-year-end/

Dangote Responds to Viral Memes as Nigerians Joke About Refinery Ownership Africa's richest man and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has reacted to the wave of viral memes generated by Nigerians who recently bought shares in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The memes emerged following the launch of the refinery's Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Nigerian Exchange on September 14, with investors jokingly presenting themselves as business partners and co-owners of the multibillion-dollar refinery. Dangote addressed the trend while speaking with CNN correspondent Larry Madowo at the Unstoppable Africa 2026 summit in New York. The billionaire said the IPO was designed to attract investors from across Africa, with an ambition of having up to 10 million shareholders. According to Dangote, the objective is to broaden ownership and increase participation in Africa's capital markets. He also expressed confidence in the future value of the company, saying the share price would continue to grow and that he expected the refinery to become Africa's most profitable company. The viral memes began after the minimum subscription was set at 10 shares, allowing more Nigerians to participate in the offer with a relatively small amount of money. Some new shareholders jokingly demanded board meetings, while others posted memes portraying themselves as senior executives of the refinery. The trend even inspired humorous videos from Nigerian comedians and content creators. Reuters also reported that the IPO triggered significant interest among retail investors, with some digital investment platforms experiencing technical difficulties as people rushed to participate. The Dangote Refinery IPO involves 4.1 billion ordinary shares, with the offer scheduled to close on October 13, 2026. The funds are intended to support the company's expansion plans, including an increase in refining capacity. Dangote also said the expected number of shareholders could be so large that the company's annual general meeting would need to be held in a stadium. The development has turned what is essentially a major capital-market transaction into a major social-media talking point, with Nigerians using humour to celebrate their newly acquired stakes in one of the country's biggest industrial projects. https://www.lagoslately.com/dangote-reacts-to-viral-memes-as-nigerians-joke-about-refinery-ownership/

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, working alongside local vigilantes, have reportedly captured key commanders of a terrorist group suspected of involvement in the kidnapping and killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in Katsina State. The operation, carried out on Sunday, September 20, 2026, reportedly resulted in the arrest of several senior members of the terrorist group known as the Kachalla Maha network. Among those captured was a suspected commander identified as Samagi, who is believed to be a prominent figure within the group's operational structure. According to security sources, the suspects are expected to undergo detailed investigation and profiling to determine their individual roles in the activities of the group and their possible involvement in other attacks and kidnappings across Katsina and neighbouring states. The arrests were reportedly achieved through cooperation between military personnel and local vigilantes, with intelligence from local communities playing a role in tracking the suspects. Security authorities are expected to use information obtained from the arrested suspects to uncover details about the group's leadership structure, hideouts, supply networks and other possible members or collaborators. The development comes months after Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, was abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State. He later died while in captivity. His wife was subsequently rescued during a military operation. The military has continued intensified operations in Katsina and other parts of the North-West as part of efforts to disrupt terrorist and bandit networks operating in the region. https://www.lagoslately.com/troops-capture-terrorist-commanders-linked-to-killing-of-maj-gen-rabe-in-katsina/

Super Eagles midfielder Alhassan Yusuf has been left out of Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, with injury emerging as the main reason for his absence. Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle named his squad for the September qualifiers, but Yusuf was not included despite his strong performances for both the Super Eagles and New England Revolution in recent months. Yusuf Ruled Out With Hamstring Injury According to reports, the New England Revolution midfielder suffered a hamstring injury during his club’s 2-1 victory over New York City FC. Yusuf was forced off in the 19th minute after picking up the injury following a challenge, and the problem is expected to keep him out for several weeks. Soccernet reports that the 26-year-old could be sidelined for up to six weeks, ruling him out of Nigeria’s two September AFCON qualifying matches. Another Nigerian football outlet, OwnGoalNigeria, also reported that Yusuf had been ruled out of the qualifiers because of a hamstring injury. His Recent Super Eagles Form Had Put Him in Contention Yusuf's omission comes despite an impressive return to the national team earlier this year. The midfielder played a key role in Nigeria’s 2026 Unity Cup campaign and was particularly influential in the final against Jamaica, where he scored twice as the Super Eagles secured a 3-0 victory. His performances had strengthened his case for continued involvement under Chelle after he was previously left out of Nigeria's squad for the 2025 AFCON. Chelle Was Expected to Consider Yusuf Yusuf had been among the midfielders competing for places in Chelle's squad following his performances for New England Revolution and Nigeria. His absence from the latest squad is therefore understood to be injury-related rather than a fresh decision to drop him from the coach's plans. Chelle has also had to make other changes to his squad because of injuries, with reports indicating that several players were unavailable or doubtful ahead of the qualifiers. When Will Yusuf Return? The length of Yusuf's recovery will determine when he can return to action for New England Revolution and the Super Eagles. With Nigeria's September fixtures coming too soon for the midfielder, his immediate priority will be recovering fully before attempting to return to club football and, subsequently, the national team. Nigeria are scheduled to face Madagascar on September 25 before travelling to Morocco to play Guinea-Bissau on September 29 in their opening 2027 AFCON qualifying fixtures. https://www.lagoslately.com/why-eric-chelle-left-alhassan-yusuf-out-of-nigerias-2027-afcon-qualifiers-squad/

Algeria is moving further towards English in its education system, with the government confirming changes that reduce the prominence of French in primary schools from the 2026-2027 academic year. Under the new arrangement, English will be introduced from the third year of primary school, while French will begin a year later, from the fourth year. The move effectively makes English the first foreign language pupils encounter in the primary-school system. English to Start Earlier in Primary Schools Algeria’s Ministry of National Education said the new arrangement would take effect from the 2026-2027 school year. The ministry explained that English would be introduced in the third year of primary education, while French would continue as a second foreign language from the fourth year. Officials said the policy is designed to strengthen foreign-language education and prepare pupils for future academic, technological, economic and cultural demands. The ministry also said the decision is consistent with Algeria’s education law, which provides for pupils to study at least two foreign languages. French Still Remains in the Curriculum The reform does not remove French entirely from Algeria’s primary-school system. Instead, French instruction will start one year later than English, meaning pupils will study English first before adding French from the fourth year. The change therefore represents a shift in the order and emphasis of foreign-language teaching rather than an immediate end to French-language education in schools. Policy Sparks Debate The decision has generated debate in Algeria, particularly among French-speaking sections of society. Critics have raised concerns about the possible impact of the change on the quality of education and argued that French remains deeply embedded in parts of Algeria’s education system and economy. Supporters, meanwhile, see English as increasingly important for science, technology, international communication and the modern economy. The debate reflects Algeria’s long-running linguistic and cultural tensions surrounding Arabic, French and, increasingly, English. English Expansion Extends Beyond Primary Education The shift is also part of a broader move towards English in Algeria’s education sector. The country has already been increasing the use of English in higher education, including the gradual switch from French to English in medicine and science-related university programmes. The latest primary-school policy therefore forms part of a wider effort to expand English across Algeria’s education system. https://www.lagoslately.com/algeria-promotes-english-as-french-loses-ground-in-primary-schools/

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has said he has no intention of becoming a political godfather or imposing a successor on the state after completing his second term in office. Otti made the remarks on Thursday in Umuahia while receiving former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate Ngozi Johnson-Chukwunenye and her supporters into the Labour Party (LP). The governor said the process of choosing his eventual successor should focus on identifying the most suitable candidate, while the electorate would have the final say. Otti: I Don’t Tolerate Godfathers Otti said he would not seek to control Abia politics after leaving office, stressing that he does not support the practice of political godfatherism. He said stakeholders would assess those interested in succeeding him, agree on the person they consider most suitable and support that candidate, but added that the people of Abia would ultimately decide through the electoral process. The governor also said he expected whoever succeeds him to be better equipped to provide leadership for the state. Governor Rules Out Senate Ambition Otti also reiterated that he does not intend to seek another elective position after completing his second term as governor. He said he was not interested in pursuing a Senate seat and planned to retire from elective politics after his tenure. The governor said he wanted younger Nigerians to have greater opportunities to assume leadership responsibilities, describing the continuation of “sit-tight” politics as something that should be discouraged. Otti Highlights Youth Leadership Development According to the governor, his administration is already preparing younger people for future leadership through initiatives including the Abia Leadership Academy. Otti said more than 1,080 young people between the ages of 16 and 25 had recently graduated from the academy. He said developing younger leaders was important because the next generation should be given opportunities to take responsibility for the country and the state. Johnson-Chukwunenye Joins Labour Party The event also marked the formal reception of Ngozi Johnson-Chukwunenye, who contested the 2023 Abia governorship election on the SDP platform, into the Labour Party. Johnson-Chukwunenye said her decision followed her assessment of developments under Otti's administration. She cited the payment of salary arrears, regular payment of workers' salaries, attention to pensioners and road rehabilitation in Aba and Umuahia among the developments that influenced her decision. Otti Says Infrastructure Work Will Continue The governor also defended his administration's development efforts, saying work carried out in Aba and Umuahia would be extended to other parts of the state. He said the administration was moving into the hinterlands and would continue its interventions across the state. Otti also said his administration would not be distracted by criticism as it pursued its development programme. 2027 Politics Looms Over Abia Otti is seeking re-election in the 2027 Abia governorship election, while his comments about succession focus on what he says should happen after his second tenure. His position that he does not intend to become a political godfather comes as parties in the state begin preparations for the 2027 elections and debate succession, party structures and the future direction of Abia politics. https://www.lagoslately.com/alex-otti-i-dont-tolerate-godfathers-wont-become-one/

Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued 31 kidnapped victims during separate operations in Katsina and Kebbi states. The operations, conducted on September 14 and 15, also led to the death of two suspected terrorists, the arrest of two others and the recovery of ammunition, a motorcycle, camouflage clothing and other items, according to the task force. 10 Kidnap Victims Rescued in Katsina In Katsina State, troops of Sector 2 rescued 10 kidnap victims following reports of abductions in Unguwan Daudu and Unguwan Chibauna communities in Funtua Local Government Area. The victims comprised three males and seven females, including an infant. The rescued persons were subsequently taken into military custody for further action. 21 Victims Rescued in Kebbi In Kebbi State, troops responded to a distress call following the abduction of civilians from Fafala Village in Kangiwa Local Government Area. The gun battle reportedly forced the attackers to withdraw, allowing the troops to rescue 21 victims. The rescued victims were later reunited with their families. Two Terrorists Killed in Katsina The military also reported a separate operation in Katsina on September 15, during which troops foiled an alleged plan to attack communities in Matazu and Kankara local government areas. The troops reportedly moved towards a suspected terrorist hideout and engaged the group with superior firepower. Two suspected terrorists were killed, including Abbah Alhassan, whom the military identified as a known terrorist kingpin. Other suspected terrorists reportedly fled into the surrounding bush. Items recovered from the area included 10 rounds of ammunition, a motorcycle, a cutlass, camouflage clothing and Indian hemp, among other items. Two Suspected Terrorists Arrested In another operation in Katsina, troops arrested two suspected terrorists around the Yantumaki general area of Dan Musa Local Government Area. Preliminary interrogation, according to the military, indicated that the suspects were allegedly associated with a suspected terrorist kingpin identified as Mannori. The two suspects remain in custody for further investigation. Military Urges Public Vigilance The Joint Task Force said the operations demonstrate its continued efforts to rescue kidnapped victims, disrupt terrorist networks and restrict the activities of armed groups across its area of operation. Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is set to hand Alverca defender Isaac James his first senior invitation to the Nigerian national team ahead of the September 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The 22-year-old left-back has reportedly attracted Chelle’s attention with his performances for Portuguese Primeira Liga side Alverca, where he has started all six league matches this season. James’ expected invitation comes as Nigeria look for additional options at left-back following Zaidu Sanusi’s injury. Isaac James Emerges as New Left-Back Option According to reports from Portugal, James is expected to be invited for Nigeria’s upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. The Alverca defender has played 514 minutes in the Portuguese league this season and has contributed two assists. His latest appearance came in Alverca’s 3-1 away victory over Nacional on September 12. His ability to operate in more than one defensive role has also strengthened his case. James can play as a traditional left-back, left wing-back or on the left side of a back three. Sanusi Injury Opens Door for James The expected call-up comes after Porto left-back Zaidu Sanusi suffered a right adductor injury during his club’s 3-0 victory over Académico de Viseu on August 29. Sanusi was substituted early in the match and is expected to spend about two months on the sidelines, creating a need for additional depth in the position. Bruno Onyemaechi remains another option for Chelle, but James’ emergence gives the coach another player to assess during the international window. James’ Journey to Portugal James began his football journey in Nigeria with Garden City Panthers before attracting interest from clubs abroad. His development included a trial with Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2021 before he moved to France for an opportunity with Lorient. Lorient subsequently signed him and placed him in their reserve structure. His competitive progress was initially affected by visa issues, but he eventually broke into the senior setup. James made his professional debut for Lorient against Grenoble in Ligue 2 on August 24, 2024, coming on as a substitute in a 2-0 victory. Chelle Continues to Expand Super Eagles Options James has reportedly been on Chelle’s radar since last season, with the coach’s scouting network monitoring his progress at Alverca. A report published earlier this month said Chelle had sent scouts to watch the young defender on three occasions this season and was impressed by the reports received. If the invitation is confirmed and James makes the squad, the September qualifiers could mark the beginning of his senior international career with Nigeria. For now, the expected invitation gives the young defender an opportunity to compete for a place in a Super Eagles squad undergoing changes ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. https://www.lagoslately.com/first-super-eagles-call-up-eric-chelle-set-to-invite-isaac-james/

UK PM Reaffirms Commitment to Union After 3 Nations Sign Self-Determination Declaration British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed his commitment to keeping the United Kingdom together after the leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland signed a joint declaration asserting their right to determine their constitutional futures. Burnham’s spokesperson said on Monday that the prime minister “believes strongly in the union” and remains committed to delivering change across all four nations of the UK. The statement came hours after the first ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland signed a memorandum of understanding calling on the UK government to prepare for possible constitutional change. Three Nations Demand Right to Decide Their Future The declaration was signed by Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, Wales’ First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth and Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill. The three leaders said each of their nations has the right to determine its own future through democratic means and in accordance with the wishes of its people. The agreement followed the first face-to-face meeting of the three nationalist leaders in Cardiff, the Welsh capital. Their declaration argued that the political landscape in the three nations is changing and called for greater recognition of their right to pursue constitutional change. Burnham Rejects Fresh Constitutional Focus Responding to the declaration, the British prime minister’s spokesperson said the government would focus on economic security and improving living conditions rather than engaging in renewed constitutional disputes. “The prime minister will continue to ease pressures on household finances,” the spokesperson said, while stressing the government’s focus on “greater economic security” rather than further constitutional debates or referendums. The spokesperson also said the UK is “at its best” when its people work together around shared values and practical solutions rather than division. Historic Political Development The declaration represents a significant development in UK politics because, for the first time since devolution began in 1997, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are led by first ministers whose parties support leaving the United Kingdom. Scotland’s SNP has long campaigned for independence, while Plaid Cymru supports Welsh independence. Sinn Féin, which holds the first minister position in Northern Ireland, advocates Irish reunification. The coordinated position therefore presents a fresh challenge to Westminster over the future constitutional structure of the United Kingdom. Trump’s Ireland Comments Add to Pressure The development also comes amid renewed debate over Northern Ireland’s constitutional future following comments by US President Donald Trump. During his visit to Ireland, Trump said he would “love” to see a united Ireland and described the integration of Ireland and Northern Ireland as something he considered natural. Burnham has previously said there is currently no majority public support for another referendum on Irish unification and that no such vote would take place unless public sentiment changes. His office subsequently confirmed that position remained unchanged following Trump’s comments. UK Union Faces Renewed Constitutional Debate While the declaration does not itself change the constitutional status of Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, it signals increased coordination among political leaders seeking greater autonomy or independence. Burnham, however, has made clear that his government’s priority remains strengthening cooperation among the four nations while addressing economic pressures and household finances. The competing positions are likely to keep the question of the UK’s constitutional future at the centre of political debate as nationalist parties in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland push for greater self-determination. https://www.lagoslately.com/uk-pm-reaffirms-union-commitment-after-scotland-wales-northern-ireland-declaration/

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates for Nigeria’s January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, with a total of 4,878 candidates cleared to contest. The final list contains 18 presidential candidates, while another 4,860 candidates are contesting the 109 Senate and 360 House of Representatives seats across the country. Tinubu, Atiku and Obi Among Presidential Candidates The presidential list includes incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is contesting on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Also on the list are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who is contesting under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The final list also contains two female presidential candidates: Ada Elizabeth Fredrick Okwori of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Nkem Esther Okereke of the National Rescue Movement (NRM). APC Fields Candidates Across All Positions The ruling APC has the largest presence on the ballot, having submitted candidates for all the positions covered by the presidential and National Assembly elections. The PDP is fielding 103 senatorial candidates and 302 candidates for the House of Representatives. The ADC has 107 senatorial candidates and 220 House of Representatives candidates, while the NDC has 103 senatorial candidates and 327 House of Representatives candidates. The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) is fielding 103 candidates for the Senate and 232 for the House of Representatives. NNPP Presidential Candidate Missing From Final List The final list does not contain the name of the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). INEC's publication also records changes involving some running mates. The APM replaced Ibrahim Adamu Bala with Musa Lawal Daura as its running mate, while Sulaiman Nasir Mohammed replaced Abubakar Adamu Bala. The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) also replaced Baba Musa with Rabiu Kabiru as its running mate. Four Parties Have Female Running Mates The final list shows that four political parties have women as their vice-presidential candidates. They are the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Labour Party (LP), Democratic Labour Alliance (DLA) and Action Peoples Party (APP). The development adds a gender dimension to the presidential contest, although women remain a small minority among the overall presidential candidates. 2027 Presidential Election Holds January 16 INEC has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027. The elections will determine Nigeria's next president as well as members of the Senate and House of Representatives. The release of the final candidate list marks another major milestone in the electoral process and gives voters a clearer picture of the politicians and political parties that will appear on the ballot. The President of the National Assembly of Côte d’Ivoire, Patrick Achi, has arrived in Abuja ahead of the 2026 Gender and Inclusion Summit (GS-26), where he is scheduled to deliver the keynote address. Achi, who is also a former Prime Minister of Côte d’Ivoire, was announced by the Policy Innovation Centre (PIC), organisers of the summit, as the keynote speaker for the high-level gathering focused on gender equality, inclusion and sustainable development across Africa. Achi to Headline GS-26 in Abuja The Gender and Inclusion Summit 2026 was held in Abuja from September 7 to 9, with this year’s edition themed “From Agenda to Action: Making Innovations Count for the Last Mile.” The summit brought together policymakers, government officials, private-sector leaders, academics, civil society organisations and development partners to examine practical ways of translating policy commitments into measurable improvements for underserved communities. Achi’s participation added a high-level regional perspective to discussions around economic transformation, inclusion and governance. Focus on Women, Youth and Underserved Communities According to the organisers, GS-26 placed particular emphasis on ensuring that development initiatives reach women, young people, persons with disabilities and other communities that have historically been excluded from opportunities. The summit’s discussions covered areas including education, healthcare, economic inclusion, climate resilience, prevention of gender-based violence, transportation and security. PIC Executive Director Dr Osasuyi Dirisu said Africa does not lack ideas but needs stronger systems, partnerships and accountability mechanisms capable of turning innovations into meaningful outcomes for people at the last mile. Achi Brings Three Decades of Public Leadership Experience Achi is an engineer, development strategist and public policy expert with more than three decades of experience spanning infrastructure development, economic policy, institutional reform and public administration. Before becoming President of Côte d’Ivoire’s National Assembly, he served as Prime Minister of the West African country. He also participates in international policy initiatives, including as an external adviser to the joint IMF-World Bank Bretton Woods at 80 Initiative and as a member of the World Bank Group’s High-Level Advisory Council on Jobs. Summit Seeks to Move Beyond Policy Commitments The organisers said the 2026 summit was designed to shift attention from policy discussions and commitments towards implementation, accountability and measurable impact. The Policy Innovation Centre said GS-26 builds on the Gender and Inclusion Summit platform established in 2022 and is intended to provide a space for researchers, policymakers, development practitioners and other stakeholders to develop practical approaches to gender and inclusion challenges across Africa. The summit’s central message was that development should ultimately be measured by the extent to which policies and innovations improve the lives of people who are furthest from opportunities. https://www.lagoslately.com/cote-divoire-assembly-president-patrick-achi-arrives-abuja-for-gs-26-summit/

.The Federal Government has begun moves to operationalise 112 as Nigeria’s single national emergency number, with the aim of giving citizens one toll-free line to access emergency assistance across the country. The development follows the approval by the National Economic Council (NEC) of 112 as the unified emergency number across all levels of government and relevant response agencies. FG Sets Roadmap for Nationwide Rollout Vice President Kashim Shettima has directed relevant government agencies and stakeholders to develop a comprehensive operational roadmap for the nationwide implementation of the emergency number. A committee comprising the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant agencies has been constituted to finalise the roadmap and standard operating procedures. The plan will subsequently be presented to the NEC for formal endorsement. One Number for Different Emergencies Under the proposed unified system, Nigerians would no longer need to determine which emergency agency to contact before seeking help. The 112 system is designed to provide access to the appropriate response for situations including security incidents, road accidents, fires, medical emergencies, natural disasters and other life-threatening situations. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu said the adoption of a single emergency number would provide citizens with a simpler and more reliable way to seek urgent assistance. FG Seeks Faster Emergency Response The Federal Government said the initiative is intended to address fragmentation within Nigeria’s emergency response system, where different agencies and jurisdictions have historically operated through separate channels. At the NEC meeting in April, Shettima said Nigerians facing emergencies needed a rapid response rather than bureaucratic delays. The council consequently approved 112 as part of efforts to create a more coordinated national emergency-response framework. The government’s latest roadmap is expected to clarify responsibilities among participating agencies, establish operating standards and set milestones for implementation. NCC Has Established Emergency Communication Centres The NCC has already established about 35 Emergency Communications Centres (ECCs) across the country to support the national emergency response system. NCC officials, however, have stressed that the success of the initiative will depend on stronger cooperation among state governments and emergency-response agencies. The commission has also called for the maintenance of communications infrastructure already deployed and greater integration between the police, ambulance services, fire services and disaster-response agencies. 112 Already Exists, But FG Wants a Unified System Although 112 is not a completely new emergency code in Nigeria, the current reform seeks to make it the single, coordinated national emergency lifeline. Government officials have acknowledged that challenges including connectivity, management of Emergency Communication Centres and public awareness have affected the effectiveness of the existing system. A government report earlier in 2026 found that about 80 per cent of states could access 112, while connectivity and awareness remained challenges. The latest initiative is therefore focused not simply on assigning a number, but on ensuring that calls placed to 112 result in coordinated and timely responses. Committee to Finalise Implementation Stakeholders involved in the rollout include the police, NCC, NEMA, FRSC and other emergency-response institutions. The government says the committee will develop the operational framework and standard operating procedures required to make 112 function as a reliable nationwide emergency service. Once fully implemented, the system is expected to give Nigerians a single point of contact when they require urgent assistance. https://www.lagoslately.com/nigeria-adopts-112-as-national-emergency-number-fg-begins-nationwide-rollout/

The Federal Government has announced the full automation of the evaluation and authentication of academic certificates, ending the need for applicants to visit the Federal Ministry of Education in person. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the development as part of the government’s wider digital transformation efforts under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. According to the ministry, applicants can now complete the entire credential evaluation and authentication process online through its dedicated platform. Applicants No Longer Required to Visit Ministry Under the new arrangement, Nigerians and other applicants seeking academic credential authentication or evaluation will no longer need to travel to the ministry’s offices for physical verification. The Federal Ministry of Education said the online system is designed to reduce bureaucratic delays, speed up processing and make the service more accessible to applicants both within Nigeria and abroad. The reform also seeks to improve transparency and strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s academic certification system. How the New Online Verification System Works Applicants are required to use the ministry’s official credential evaluation and authentication platform to begin the process. The ministry directed applicants to register and upload the required supporting documents through essverify.education.gov.ng. For transcript verification, applicants are required to request their institutions to send transcripts directly from official institutional email addresses to the ministry’s designated email channel. This is intended to ensure that academic records are transmitted securely from recognised institutions. Employers and Institutions Can Verify Qualifications The ministry said the digital system is not only designed for individual applicants. Institutions, employers and other authorised stakeholders will also be able to verify academic qualifications through a more structured and reliable process. According to the government, this is expected to strengthen confidence in academic records while making credential verification more efficient. FG Highlights Benefits of Digital System The Federal Government said the transition is expected to bring several improvements, including: - Faster processing of certificate verification requests - Reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks - Greater transparency in credential evaluation - Improved data management - Stronger protection of the integrity of academic records - Easier access for Nigerians and applicants living abroad The education ministry described the reform as part of its broader effort to use technology to modernise education governance and improve public service delivery. Ministry Provides Official Contact Details Applicants have been advised to rely only on the Federal Ministry of Education’s official platform and communication channels when applying for certificate evaluation or authentication. The ministry provided essverify.education.gov.ng as the official online portal and ess1@education.gov.ng for enquiries in the latest announcement. The move represents another step towards reducing physical bureaucracy in government services and shifting academic credential verification to a fully digital process. https://www.lagoslately.com/fg-moves-academic-certificate-verification-online-ends-physical-visits/

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has recorded a remarkable $1 billion increase in his estimated fortune within 24 hours, pushing his net worth to $32.5 billion, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaire tracker. The latest jump came as investors focused on the planned Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which is expected to open on September 14, 2026. Dangote’s Wealth Rises 3.3% in One Day Forbes’ real-time data showed that Dangote’s estimated fortune rose from about $31.5 billion to $32.5 billion, representing a 3.3 per cent increase. The figure was based on data recorded on Monday, September 7. His wealth had also increased by about $3.3 million on the previous Friday. The latest gain means Dangote’s fortune has risen significantly since the end of 2025, when Forbes valued it at approximately $25.6 billion. It is important to note that the $1 billion figure represents an increase in estimated net worth and should not be interpreted as $1 billion in cash income earned by Dangote in one day. Bloomberg Puts Dangote’s Wealth Higher Different billionaire wealth trackers currently give different estimates of Dangote’s fortune because they use different methods for valuing publicly traded and privately held assets. While Forbes’ real-time tracker placed his wealth at $32.5 billion, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index valued it at about $35.5 billion on Monday. The difference is largely linked to how the two platforms assess Dangote’s private holdings and other assets. Dangote Refinery IPO Set to Open September 14 The surge in Dangote’s wealth comes as his massive petroleum refinery prepares for a landmark share offering. The refinery plans to offer 4.1 billion ordinary shares at N525 per share, potentially raising about N2.15 trillion, or roughly $1.6 billion, if fully subscribed. The Securities and Exchange Commission has approved the offering and registered the refinery’s existing 120.13 billion shares, putting the company on course for what is expected to become Africa’s largest IPO. The offer is scheduled to run from September 14 to October 13, 2026, according to details reported by Reuters. Refinery Valuation Put at About $47 Billion The registration of the refinery’s existing shares implies an equity valuation of roughly $47 billion, based on Reuters’ calculations. The company plans to use funds from the IPO to support expansion and increase the refinery’s processing capacity from about 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Reuters reports that the refinery has also unveiled a broader $14.3 billion expansion programme, with completion targeted for 2029. Why the IPO Matters to Dangote’s Wealth The public offering could provide investors with a clearer market-based valuation for one of the biggest assets in Dangote’s business empire. The refinery, which began operations in 2024, has become a major player in Nigeria’s petroleum industry and has expanded its reach into international markets. Dangote has also expressed plans to attract investors from across Africa, describing the planned listing as an opportunity that goes beyond Nigeria. With the IPO approaching, investor interest in the refinery has added another layer of attention to Dangote’s already substantial fortune. Dangote Remains Africa’s Richest Man The latest figures further strengthen Dangote’s position as Africa’s wealthiest individual. Earlier in 2026, his fortune had already climbed substantially. Billionaires Africa reported in March that Bloomberg had valued Dangote at $32.5 billion, making him the 64th-richest person globally at the time. His latest reported wealth increase comes at a significant moment for the Dangote Group, with the refinery IPO expected to attract major attention from Nigerian and international investors. https://www.lagoslately.com/aliko-dangote-gains-1-billion-in-24-hours-as-net-worth-hits-32-5-billion/

Nearly 500 marine animals rescued from wildlife trafficking have been taken to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, where staff worked through the night to stabilise and care for the animals. The animals, which included fish, sharks and marine invertebrates, arrived at the aquarium on June 19, 2026, following a wildlife trafficking seizure in Southern California. Aquarium Staff Worked Through the Night The sudden arrival presented a major challenge for the aquarium's animal-care team. According to the Aquarium of the Pacific, staff immediately began assessing the condition of the animals, checking their physical health, water quality and individual care requirements. Johnathan Casey, the aquarium's curator of fish and invertebrates, said animals arriving through confiscations receive the same standard of care as those acquired through planned arrangements, although their condition on arrival can be significantly different. Many trafficked animals have endured stressful transportation and poor conditions before being seized by authorities. Rescued Animals Placed in Quarantine Aquarium staff also placed the rescued animals under quarantine as part of measures to prevent the potential spread of disease. Alyssa Tillman, assistant curator of fish and invertebrates, said the facility often has limited information about the animals' origins and previous conditions when they arrive following confiscation. That means the aquarium's experts must be prepared to assess each animal individually and determine the appropriate treatment and care. More Than 3,600 Trafficked Animals Rescued The June arrival was not an isolated incident. The Aquarium of the Pacific said it has received animals from more than 30 confiscation events since September 2024. In total, the aquarium has cared for more than 3,600 animals rescued from wildlife trafficking over the past two years. The facility has also received more than a dozen confiscation cases during the first eight months of 2026 alone. Animals Face Uncertain Future After Rescue Although the rescued animals are now receiving professional care, their long-term future remains dependent on their health, origin and legal status. It is also not immediately clear when, or whether, the newly rescued animals will become part of the aquarium's public exhibits. The priority following a seizure is stabilising the animals and ensuring they are healthy enough for longer-term care. Wildlife Trafficking Poses Major Conservation Challenge Wildlife trafficking involves the illegal capture, transport and trade of animals for purposes including the exotic-pet trade and other commercial markets. For marine animals, trafficking can involve the movement of fish, sharks and invertebrates under conditions that place considerable stress on the animals. The California rescue highlights the important role of accredited wildlife and aquatic facilities in providing emergency care when authorities seize illegally trafficked animals. For the Aquarium of the Pacific, the latest intake has added hundreds of animals to an ongoing conservation and rehabilitation effort that has already involved thousands of rescued creatures. https://www.lagoslately.com/nearly-500-animals-rescued-from-trafficking-arrive-at-california-aquarium/
