Health › WAHO Director-general Visits ECOWAS Disease Control Centre In Abuja by Dharmocherish(op): 11:16am On Sep 04
The Director-General of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), Professor Palokinam Pitche, has visited the ECOWAS Regional Centre for Surveillance and Disease Control (RCSDC) in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen health security and disease preparedness across West Africa.

The visit focused on improving strategic collaboration and coordination between WAHO leadership and the regional disease-control centre.

According to a statement disclosed on Thursday, the engagement provided an opportunity to assess the centre’s activities and discuss measures for strengthening regional preparedness and response to public health threats.

Pitche Reviews Disease Surveillance Activities

During the working session, Pitche reviewed the RCSDC’s recent activities and achievements, as well as some of the operational challenges confronting the centre.

The discussions also examined prospects for improving disease surveillance and response mechanisms across the ECOWAS region.

Particular attention was given to priorities requiring stronger coordination within WAHO structures to ensure more effective responses to emerging and ongoing public health challenges.

WAHO Seeks Stronger Regional Coordination

The WAHO chief reaffirmed his support for the RCSDC, stressing the importance of stronger collaboration among institutions under the organisation.

The engagement is expected to contribute to improved coordination of regional health initiatives and more effective collective responses to complex health emergencies.

The organisation said the visit reflects the new WAHO leadership’s commitment to strengthening internal cooperation and advancing coordinated health-security efforts across West Africa.

New WAHO Leadership Begins Regional Engagements

Pitche assumed office as WAHO Director-General on September 1, 2026, succeeding the previous administration.

The Togolese public health specialist brings more than 25 years of experience in public health, health services administration, programme management and health systems strengthening.

His professional background includes work with national governments and international organisations such as the World Health Organisation, UNAIDS, USAID, WAHO, UNDP and UNFPA.

Strengthening Health Security Across West Africa

WAHO is the specialised health institution of ECOWAS, with a mandate to support member states in improving health systems, expanding access to healthcare and protecting populations across the region.

The RCSDC, based in Abuja, plays an important role in regional disease surveillance and coordination of responses to public health emergencies.

The latest engagement between the WAHO leadership and the centre therefore comes as part of broader efforts to build stronger regional systems for detecting, preventing and responding to health threats.

Science/Technology › The 1.5°C Climate Target Is Dead: The UN Says The World Must Now Pull Carbon Fro by Dharmocherish(op): 10:40am On Sep 04
The line has been crossed. Not metaphorically, not as a warning, but as a scientific and institutional fact now acknowledged by the United Nations itself. The United Nations Environment Programme has confirmed in a new report that humanity is certain to exceed the 1.5°C warming limit set by the Paris Agreement the legally binding global treaty that has anchored the world's climate ambitions for over a decade. And in doing so, UNEP has done something it has never done before: it has moved the language from "unlikely" to "impossible," stripping away the diplomatic cushioning and delivering the verdict that climate scientists have long feared would eventually have to be spoken plainly.

This is the first time that UNEP has referred to staying beneath the 1.5°C warming limit as impossible rather than unlikely. The executive director of UNEP, Inger Andersen, put it with the kind of bluntness that the moment demands, writing in the report's foreword that the 1.5°C goal must now be approached from above, meaning that the world will overshoot the threshold and then attempt to work its way back down. It is a sentence that belongs in the vocabulary of damage control, not prevention. The era of preventing the worst has quietly ended. The era of managing it has begun.

The report was not entirely without precedent in the scientific community. In February 2025, a pair of studies published in Nature Climate Change determined that Earth had likely already entered the 20-year period in which global temperatures would exceed 1.5°C. What UNEP has now done is translate that scientific assessment into institutional policy language, the kind that governments, economies, and international bodies are compelled to respond to with plans rather than pledges.

The pathway UNEP is now prescribing is called "overshoot, peak and decline." To reduce severe threats to human health, food security, water supplies, and more, societies will need to reach net-negative greenhouse gas emissions by not only cutting those emissions, but expanding carbon dioxide removal projects. This means conventional approaches such as reforestation and ecosystem restoration, as well as newer and currently limited technologies such as carbon capture and storage machines and systems that pull carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere and lock it underground. The report described this pathway plainly: "This is by no means an acceptable or preferred pathway. It is simply the best remaining option."

The scale of what is being asked of the world is staggering. Technologies that remove carbon from the air and store it underground are still limited in scale, and so far, just 12 projects have been successful. To even limit warming to 1.5°C without overshooting a scenario now off the table, the world would need to deploy carbon dioxide removal technologies at rates faster than those seen for solar power, which is far from the current reality. The gap between where the world is and where it needs to be is not a gap that inspires optimism. It is one that demands urgency on a scale that no generation has yet managed to sustain.

There are also hard physical limits to what the planet can absorb even with the best technology humanity can deploy. Scientists aren't sure Earth's subsurface could even store the amount of carbon necessary to keep Earth at net-zero emissions, with the report warning that just maintaining net-zero CO₂ emissions could exhaust current estimated storage capacity in sedimentary basins by 2200. And practical obstacles abound large amounts of land would need to be reforested for conventional carbon removal, which could spark conflicts with agriculture, while wildfires, as well as climate change itself, could prevent or damage plant growth.

In order to bring global temperatures back to the 1.5°C mark, Earth's warming must not exceed 1.8°C. Beyond that mark, cooling Earth back to the 1.5°C level this century becomes increasingly challenging. Without urgent action, the breaching of dangerous tipping points in Earth systems, such as irreversible changes to ice sheets or the slowing of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation will become more likely, paired with growing human and ecological suffering.

"We need stronger political will," Andersen wrote. "Decisions taken now and in the next few years will determine whether viable options remain to reverse warming towards 1.5°C."

For Nigeria and the broader African continent, regions that have contributed the least to global carbon emissions historically but stand to suffer the most acutely from rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, coastal flooding, and agricultural collapse, this report is not an abstraction. It is a forecast of the conditions under which millions will try to farm, find water, build cities, and survive. The 1.5°C target was never just a number. It was a promise that the world made to its most vulnerable people. That promise, the UN has now confirmed, has been broken. What happens next depends entirely on whether the world can find, in the wreckage of that broken promise, the will to do what it failed to do when doing so was still the easier option.

Politics › Nigeria’s Electricity Subsidy Obligation Hits N1.92trn In 2025 — NERC by Dharmocherish(op): 11:42am On Sep 01
The Federal Government incurred a gross electricity tariff subsidy obligation of N1.928 trillion in 2025, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The figure represents the amount required to bridge the gap between cost-reflective electricity tariffs and the lower rates approved for customers.

According to NERC’s 2025 industry report, the subsidy obligation represented 57.44 per cent of the total Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) invoice, averaging about N160.69 billion per month.

Subsidy Burden Declined Slightly

Despite the huge financial burden, the 2025 figure was slightly lower than the N1.949 trillion recorded in 2024.

NERC reported that the subsidy obligation stood at:

- N536.40 billion in the first quarter
- N514.36 billion in the second quarter
- N458.76 billion in the third quarter
- N418.79 billion in the fourth quarter

The quarterly figures show a gradual decline in the subsidy obligation as the year progressed.

Why Electricity Subsidy Remained High

NERC attributed the subsidy burden largely to the Federal Government's policy of maintaining approved customer tariffs even as the cost of supplying electricity increased.

Because tariffs paid by many consumers remained below cost-reflective levels, the government was required to absorb the difference.

The commission said the gradual decline in the subsidy obligation was partly driven by lower energy off-take by electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and a higher proportion of electricity being allocated to Band A customers.

More Electricity Allocated to Band A

NERC disclosed that the share of energy allocated to Band A customers increased from 40 per cent to 45 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Band A customers are those expected to receive significantly longer daily electricity supply than customers in the lower service bands.

The shift in energy allocation formed part of efforts to improve the commercial performance of electricity distribution and encourage better service delivery.

DisCos Billed N2.99trn, Collected N2.32trn

NERC also reported significant collection challenges within the distribution segment of the electricity market.

The 11 DisCos collectively billed customers N2.988 trillion in 2025 but collected only N2.319 trillion, leaving an outstanding balance of approximately N669.49 billion.

The resulting collection efficiency stood at 77.60 per cent.

Eko DisCo recorded the highest collection efficiency at 87.90 per cent, closely followed by Ikeja DisCo at 87.89 per cent, while Kaduna DisCo recorded the lowest at 45.68 per cent.

Financial Pressure on Power Sector

The combination of tariff subsidies and collection inefficiencies continues to place pressure on the finances of Nigeria’s electricity market.

NERC warned that weak liquidity in the sector could limit the ability of market participants to invest in infrastructure and expand electricity supply.

The latest figures therefore highlight the continuing challenge of balancing affordable electricity tariffs for consumers with the need to ensure that electricity providers receive enough revenue to operate sustainably.

With the government absorbing more than N1.9 trillion in tariff shortfalls in 2025, the future of electricity pricing and subsidy policy remains a major issue for Nigeria's power sector.

Politics › Shettima Returns To Nigeria After Representing Tinubu At AU Sumit In Angola by Dharmocherish(op): 7:33am On Sep 01
Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Luanda, Angola.

Shettima returned to Abuja on Monday after concluding his engagements at the high-level summit, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha.

Shettima Delivers Nigeria’s Position

During the summit, Shettima represented Nigeria in discussions focused on peace, security and conflict resolution across Africa.

According to Nkwocha, Nigeria called for stronger African-led mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, as well as urgent continental action against recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks targeting Africans and other nationals in South Africa.

The Vice President's participation was part of Nigeria's continued involvement in efforts to strengthen peace and security mechanisms across the continent.

Nigeria Backs Luanda Action Plan

Nigeria also backed the Luanda Action Plan during the summit.

The country called for sustainable financing of Africa's peace and security architecture and urged stronger collective responsibility among AU member states.

Nigeria further advocated greater African ownership of solutions to conflicts affecting the continent rather than relying excessively on external intervention.

Shettima Returns to Abuja

Shettima travelled to Luanda on Saturday to represent President Tinubu at the summit.

He was accompanied by senior government, defence and security officials, who participated in various engagements during the visit.

The Nigerian delegation also interacted with members of the Nigerian community in Angola, where officials discussed concerns affecting Nigerians living in the country.

Following the conclusion of his official engagements, Shettima returned to Abuja, marking the end of Nigeria's participation in the summit.

The Vice President's return comes as Nigeria continues to push for stronger African cooperation in addressing insecurity, preventing conflicts and strengthening the continent's capacity to manage its own peace and security challenges.

Foreign Affairs › Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Target $3bn Agriculture And Food Export Deal In Two Years by Dharmocherish(op): 6:34pm On Aug 30
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in agriculture and food trade, with both countries targeting an increase in Pakistan’s agricultural and food exports to the Saudi market to $3 billion within two years.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadley in Islamabad.

The discussions focused on expanding bilateral trade and creating greater opportunities for Pakistani agricultural producers and exporters in the Saudi market.

Focus on Agricultural Exports

The two sides agreed to work towards increasing Pakistan’s agriculture and food exports to Saudi Arabia from their current level to $3 billion over the next two years.

Pakistan has significant agricultural production capacity, with major exports including rice, fruits, vegetables, meat and other food products.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, relies heavily on food imports to meet domestic demand, making the country an important market for Pakistani agricultural products.

Sharif Calls for Stronger Economic Cooperation

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of expanding economic and trade relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

He highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries and called for greater cooperation in areas that can generate economic benefits for both sides.

The Pakistani government is seeking to increase exports and attract investment as part of wider efforts to strengthen the country's economy.

Saudi Arabia Explores Investment Opportunities

Saudi Arabia has also shown growing interest in investment opportunities in Pakistan.

Agriculture is among the sectors where increased Saudi investment and cooperation could help improve production, processing and access to international markets.

Greater collaboration could also create opportunities for Pakistani companies to expand their presence in the Gulf region.

Food Security Remains a Priority

The agreement comes as Saudi Arabia continues to focus on strengthening its food-security systems and diversifying its sources of agricultural imports.

For Pakistan, increasing food exports to Saudi Arabia could provide an important source of foreign exchange while opening new opportunities for farmers, food processors and exporters.

The two countries are expected to work on mechanisms that will make it easier for Pakistani agricultural products to meet Saudi market requirements and reach consumers more efficiently.

Trade Target Set for Two Years

The $3 billion target represents an ambitious expansion of agricultural and food trade between the two countries.

Achieving the target will depend on improvements in production capacity, quality standards, logistics, market access and investment in agricultural value chains.

If successfully implemented, the agreement could deepen economic ties between Islamabad and Riyadh while creating new opportunities for Pakistan's agriculture and food-processing industries.

Foreign Affairs › Burkina Faso Proposes Bilateral Talks With Nigeria To Reset Relations by Dharmocherish(op): 4:50pm On Aug 29
Burkina Faso has proposed high-level bilateral talks with Nigeria to review existing areas of cooperation and identify new opportunities for partnership as both countries seek to strengthen their diplomatic relations.

The proposal was made on Friday in Ouagadougou, when Nigeria's newly appointed Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Ambassador Syndoph Endoni, presented his Letter of Credence.

Burkina Faso's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Marie Traoré, received the Nigerian envoy and reaffirmed his country's commitment to deepening relations with Nigeria.

Burkina Faso Calls for Review of Cooperation

Traoré described Endoni's assumption of duty as an opportunity to reinforce the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

He highlighted the shared history, African heritage and common regional challenges connecting Nigeria and Burkina Faso.

The Burkinabe foreign minister subsequently backed the convening of a bilateral session where both governments could comprehensively review existing cooperation and explore new areas of partnership.

The proposed talks could provide an avenue for Abuja and Ouagadougou to address outstanding differences through direct diplomatic engagement while exploring cooperation in areas such as security, trade, diplomacy and regional stability.

Nigeria Advocates Stronger African Solidarity

Responding to the proposal, Ambassador Endoni conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's appreciation to Burkina Faso's leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, for accepting his accreditation.

The Nigerian envoy also thanked the Burkinabe government and its Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the reception accorded him since his arrival in Ouagadougou.

Endoni pledged to work with Burkinabe authorities to address issues of mutual concern and develop joint solutions to challenges affecting both countries.

He also called for stronger African solidarity and greater confidence among African countries in resolving their differences through dialogue.

“As Africans, we must learn to accept ourselves and make efforts to resist the urge to wash our dirty linens outside,” Endoni said.

Move Comes After Regional Diplomatic Tensions

The proposed engagement comes against the backdrop of recent diplomatic tensions involving Nigeria and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

The three countries formally withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on January 29, 2025, and subsequently strengthened their cooperation through the AES framework.

Nigeria, meanwhile, remains a leading member of ECOWAS and has continued to support diplomatic engagement with the Sahel countries.

The two sides have previously experienced diplomatic friction, including an incident in December 2025 involving Nigerian Air Force personnel and an aircraft that landed in Burkina Faso after the crew reported a technical problem. The matter was eventually resolved through diplomatic engagement.

New Ambassador Begins Mission

Endoni's arrival in Burkina Faso marks the beginning of his diplomatic assignment in Ouagadougou.

His posting is part of President Tinubu's deployment of newly appointed Nigerian ambassadors to various foreign missions.

The ambassador is expected to formally present his credentials to President Ibrahim Traoré as he settles into his new assignment.

Focus Shifts to Renewed Cooperation

The proposed bilateral session could provide Nigeria and Burkina Faso with an opportunity to move beyond recent disagreements and establish a new framework for engagement.

For both countries, renewed cooperation could focus on shared security concerns, economic relations, regional stability and stronger people-to-people ties.

The proposal also signals a willingness by Ouagadougou to maintain direct diplomatic channels with Abuja despite wider changes in West Africa's political and security landscape.

Business › Nigeria’s Foreign Reserves Rise To 17-year High Of $53.11bn by Dharmocherish(op): 6:56pm On Aug 28
Nigeria’s external reserves have risen to $53.11 billion, reaching their highest level in more than 17 years, according to the latest data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The reserves increased by about $3.15 billion between June 3 and August 24, 2026, rising from $49.96 billion to $53.112 billion.

The latest figure brings Nigeria close to the reserve levels recorded in 2009, when the country last approached its current position.

Reserves Near 2009 Record

At $53.11 billion, Nigeria’s current reserve position is only about $142 million below the $53.25 billion recorded on January 12, 2009.

The steady accumulation gathered momentum during July and August.

CBN data showed that reserves rose from $51.53 billion on July 3 to about $52 billion on July 27. The figure subsequently increased to $52.86 billion on August 21, before crossing the $53 billion threshold.

Oil Earnings Boost Dollar Inflows

The rise in reserves has been linked by experts to stronger foreign-exchange inflows, including earnings from crude oil exports.

Oil remains one of Nigeria’s major sources of foreign exchange, meaning higher crude prices and improved oil production can strengthen the country's dollar earnings.

However, analysts have cautioned that maintaining the reserve buildup will depend on the continued inflow of foreign exchange into the economy.

Naira Records Relative Stability

The increase in external reserves has also coincided with relative stability in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

According to CBN data cited in the report, the naira closed at N1,343.59 to the US dollar on August 26, while foreign-exchange market turnover stood at approximately $235.99 million, with 213 deals recorded.

A stronger reserve position provides the country with a larger external buffer and can improve confidence in the foreign-exchange market.

Reserves Surpass 2026 Projection

The latest reserve figure is also above the CBN's projected reserve level of approximately $51.04 billion for the full year.

The increase represents a significant improvement from the beginning of 2026. Earlier data showed that reserves had risen by about $7.09 billion since the start of the year.

The higher reserves could strengthen Nigeria’s ability to meet external obligations and respond to periods of increased demand for foreign currency.

Sustainability Remains Key

Despite the positive development, maintaining the reserve buildup will remain important.

Analysts have pointed to the need for Nigeria to diversify its sources of foreign exchange through stronger oil production, increased non-oil exports, foreign investment, remittances and improved FX liquidity.

A sustained increase in reserves could provide additional support for macroeconomic stability and strengthen confidence in the naira.

For now, Nigeria’s crossing of the $53 billion reserve mark represents one of the strongest external-position improvements the country has recorded in more than a decade.

Sports › My Love For Nigeria Made Me Resign As NFF President — Ibrahim Gusau by Dharmocherish(op): 9:44pm On Aug 27
Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has explained that his decision to resign from office was motivated by his love for Nigeria and his desire to see the country's football move forward.

Gusau confirmed his resignation at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, bringing to an end his three years and 11 months in charge of Nigerian football.

His resignation comes amid growing concerns over Nigeria's recent performances in international football competitions.

Gusau Confirms Resignation

Gusau said he reached the decision after consultations with his family and friends.

According to him, he had also advised members of the NFF Executive Committee who were willing to follow his example to resign from their positions.

“I have decided to resign my position as the president of NFF after consultations with my family and friends,” Gusau said.

He added that he could not immediately confirm how many members of the NFF board had also resigned because those who were considering the move had yet to communicate their decisions directly to him.

Decision Comes After Football Setbacks

Gusau's departure follows a difficult period for Nigerian football, with the country's national teams recording disappointing results in some recent international competitions.

The development has generated renewed debate over the leadership and administration of the NFF, as stakeholders continue to demand improvements in the management and development of Nigerian football.

The former NFF president's resignation therefore comes at a time when the federation is under pressure to address concerns surrounding the performance of the country's national teams and the wider state of football administration.

Gusau Says Nigeria Remains His Priority

Despite stepping down, Gusau said his decision was driven by his desire to protect the interests of Nigerian football.

He maintained that his love for the country influenced his decision and suggested that leaving office was intended to create room for the next phase of leadership.

His resignation marks the end of his tenure at a critical point for Nigerian football, with stakeholders expected to focus on finding new leadership capable of addressing the challenges facing the federation.

What Happens Next?

The resignation is expected to trigger discussions within the NFF over the federation's next leadership arrangement.

Attention will now shift to the NFF Executive Committee and other relevant stakeholders as they determine the process for filling the leadership vacuum.

For Nigerian football, the immediate challenge will be to restore confidence, improve the performance of the national teams and implement reforms capable of producing sustainable results.

Gusau's departure closes one chapter in the NFF's leadership, while the federation enters another period of transition with Nigerian football fans demanding stronger performances and better administration.

Politics › Tinubu Orders EFCC To Channel Recovered Funds Into Student Loan Scheme by Dharmocherish(op): 10:44am On Aug 25
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to channel funds recovered from financial crimes into Nigeria's student loan scheme.

The directive is part of the Federal Government's efforts to strengthen financing for students and expand access to higher education across the country.

The President gave the directive during a meeting with senior officials involved in the administration of the student loan programme, according to a report by THISDAY.

Recovered Funds to Support Students

Under the directive, funds recovered by the EFCC through its financial-crime investigations are expected to be transferred into the student loan scheme.

The move is intended to provide additional resources for the financing of eligible Nigerian students who require financial assistance to pursue tertiary education.

The student loan programme was introduced by the Federal Government as part of efforts to reduce financial barriers to higher education.

Tinubu Pushes Wider Access to Education

The President has repeatedly identified education and human capital development as important components of his administration's agenda.

The student loan scheme is designed to enable students to access funding for tuition and other approved educational expenses, with repayment structured after beneficiaries complete their studies and begin earning income.

By directing recovered proceeds into the programme, the administration hopes to create an additional funding stream without relying solely on annual budgetary allocations.

EFCC’s Role in the Programme

The EFCC is responsible for investigating and recovering proceeds linked to economic and financial crimes.

The President's directive effectively links some of those recovered resources to a social investment programme focused on education.

The move could also strengthen public confidence in the recovery of illicit funds by demonstrating how recovered assets can be redirected towards programmes that directly benefit citizens.

Student Loan Scheme Remains Government Priority

The Federal Government has continued to expand the student loan programme as part of its broader education reforms.

The initiative is expected to support students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds and reduce the number of young Nigerians unable to pursue tertiary education because of financial constraints.

Tinubu's latest directive signals an intention to use recovered public resources to support the sustainability of the programme.

The administration is expected to provide further details on the amount to be transferred, the implementation process and how the recovered funds will be deployed to beneficiaries.

The burial arrangements were announced following the actor's death on Sunday at the age of 66. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, and a family friend.

According to the burial arrangements, Ogogo's remains will be taken to Ilaro, where a lying-in-state ceremony is scheduled to take place before his burial on Monday.

A separate announcement by the Ilaro Muslim Community indicated that the burial prayer for the late actor will take place at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground in Ilaro at 10 a.m. on Monday.

The development follows an emotional outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, fans and members of the Yoruba film industry following the news of his death.

Ogogo had been battling stage-four cancer in the weeks preceding his death.

Earlier in August, his daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, publicly appealed for medical assistance, revealing the severity of his condition and seeking help from hospitals and cancer specialists.

The family had initially dismissed reports of his death when rumours circulated online on August 18, urging the public to disregard the unverified reports.

He was later confirmed dead on Sunday, August 23.

Ogogo was one of the prominent figures in Yoruba-language cinema, with a career spanning more than four decades.

He worked as an actor, filmmaker, producer and screenwriter and became widely recognised for his performances in indigenous Nigerian productions.

His career included appearances in films such as Omo Ghetto, Anikulapo and Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, among numerous other productions.

His contribution to Yoruba theatre and Nollywood earned him respect from colleagues across different generations of the Nigerian entertainment industry.

News of Ogogo's death has triggered tributes from prominent members of the Nigerian film industry, who have described his passing as a major loss to Nollywood.

His long-time colleagues and friends, including veteran actors who worked alongside him for decades, have continued to mourn his contribution to the industry.

As the entertainment community prepares to accompany him on his final journey, attention will turn to Ilaro on Monday for the burial rites of one of Yoruba cinema's most recognisable veterans.

She has released 18 albums and collaborated with major international artists including Burna Boy, Alicia Keys, Bono, Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel and Yo-Yo Ma.

Kidjo has also won five Grammy Awards and received numerous other international honours during her career.

The Hollywood ceremony attracted prominent figures from the entertainment industry.

Actor Willem Dafoe and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. were among the speakers who celebrated Kidjo's contribution to music and culture.

Benin-born actor Djimon Hounsou and Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold were also among those present at the ceremony.

Dafoe praised Kidjo's energy, artistry and commitment, while Mason highlighted her ability to connect cultures and audiences through music.

Kidjo's influence extends beyond her music career. She has been involved in humanitarian and advocacy work and serves as a UNICEF and Oxfam goodwill ambassador.

She is also a co-founder of the Batonga Foundation, which supports vulnerable girls and women in Benin.

Her latest recognition therefore represents both a personal career milestone and a significant moment for African representation in one of the world's most famous entertainment landmarks.

With her name now permanently displayed on Hollywood Boulevard, Kidjo joins a select group of global entertainment figures whose contributions have been recognised on the Walk of Fame.

For the celebrated singer, however, the achievement carries a broader meaning: it is a celebration of African music, culture and influence on the world stage.

Politics › 2027 Presidency: Campaigns Officially Begin As Tinubu, Atiku, Obi Prepare For Ba by Dharmocherish(op): 4:05pm On Aug 19
.Political campaigning for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections officially begins today, August 19, 2026, opening a new phase in the race for the country’s presidency.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has lifted the restriction on public campaigns, allowing political parties and candidates to begin rallies, grassroots mobilisation and other activities aimed at winning voters.

Under the Electoral Act 2026, public campaigns are permitted to begin 250 days before election day and must end 24 hours before voting. INEC's timetable puts the presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027.

Campaigning for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections is scheduled to begin on September 9, 2026, ahead of those elections on February 6, 2027.

The presidential contest is expected to be dominated by three major political figures: incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The emerging contest has similarities with the 2023 election, when Tinubu, Atiku and Obi were also among the leading candidates.

However, the political landscape has changed considerably since then, with opposition parties attempting to build a broader coalition capable of challenging the APC at the federal level.

One of the major developments ahead of the campaign season is the effort by opposition groups to establish a united front.

The G-100 Coalition, led by former APC national vice-chairman Salihu Lukman, has been working to bring opposition parties and political leaders together with the aim of producing a stronger challenge to the ruling party.

The coalition is expected to hold a unity summit in Abuja as part of efforts to reconcile competing interests and explore the possibility of a consensus presidential candidate.

However, reaching an agreement among major opposition figures could prove difficult because of their individual presidential ambitions and differing political interests.

While opposition parties continue their efforts to strengthen their alliance, the ruling APC says it is also preparing for the election.

The party's Director of Media and Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said the APC would work to retain the confidence of Nigerians and secure the renewal of President Tinubu's mandate.

APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka also said the party was developing a comprehensive nationwide campaign programme after consultations with relevant stakeholders.

Morka noted that although August 19 is the earliest date parties are permitted to begin presidential campaigning, parties are not legally required to launch their campaigns on that exact day.

As candidates begin campaigning, major national issues are expected to dominate their messages to voters.

These include economic hardship, inflation, unemployment, insecurity, poverty and the impact of the Federal Government's reforms.

The APC is expected to campaign on the achievements of the Tinubu administration and its Renewed Hope Agenda, while opposition candidates are likely to focus on areas where they believe the government has fallen short.

The ability of candidates to present credible solutions to these challenges could play a major role in determining how Nigerians vote.

With the campaign season officially underway, political activity is expected to intensify across the country in the coming months.

Parties will now seek to mobilise supporters, strengthen grassroots structures, sell their manifestos and convince undecided voters ahead of the January 2027 presidential poll.

The election is expected to be one of Nigeria's most closely watched political contests, with the outcome set to determine the country's direction for the next four years.

Politics › US Lifts 12-year Security Restriction On Nigerian Vessels — Oyetola by Dharmocherish(op): 4:56pm On Aug 18
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has lifted the Condition of Entry (CoE) imposed on vessels arriving in the United States from Nigeria, ending a 12-year regime of enhanced security requirements on ships calling at Nigerian ports.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, announced the development, describing it as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen maritime security, improve port competitiveness and enhance the country’s standing in the global maritime industry.

The CoE, which took effect on June 25, 2014, required vessels destined for the United States that had called at designated Nigerian ports within their previous five port calls to undergo additional security measures and enhanced scrutiny before entering U.S. waters.

Oyetola attributed the lifting of the restriction to sustained efforts by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, through the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), in collaboration with government agencies, port and terminal operators, shipping companies and other stakeholders.

He said the efforts focused on strengthening Nigeria’s maritime security framework, addressing identified gaps and ensuring compliance with internationally accepted security standards.

Over the past two years, the USCG conducted four comprehensive assessments of Nigeria’s national maritime security framework and port facilities. The assessments were carried out in March and April 2024, March 2025 and April 2026.

According to the Minister, the assessments demonstrated significant progress in Nigeria’s maritime security performance and implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, ultimately leading to the lifting of the restriction.

“The lifting of the Condition of Entry is a major milestone for Nigeria’s maritime sector. It is a strong affirmation of the progress we have made in strengthening maritime security and implementing the ISPS Code across our ports and facilities,” Oyetola said.

“We are committed to sustaining this momentum and ensuring that Nigeria remains a safe, secure and competitive destination for international shipping.”

The Minister commended the NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and his team, saying the development demonstrated the impact of effective regulation, stakeholder collaboration and sustained investment in maritime security.

Investment › Dangote Refinery Secures $400m Underwriting Commitment Ahead Of $5bn IPO by Dharmocherish(op): 2:56pm On Aug 18
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has secured a $400 million underwriting commitment as preparations continue for its planned initial public offering (IPO), which could become one of Africa’s largest-ever stock market listings.

The underwriting commitment was announced by IPO advisers Marob Strategies and Consulting DIFC Ltd and Lilium Capital Group. It forms part of a broader $1 billion underwriting programme supporting the proposed offering.

The programme comprises a $600 million completed and funded private placement alongside the new $400 million underwriting commitment.

The refinery, owned by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, has submitted an application to Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a potential $5 billion IPO. However, the final size of the offering has not yet been determined and will depend on regulatory approval and market conditions.

According to the advisers, the $400 million underwriting facility will become effective when the IPO is launched, subject to prevailing market conditions and the necessary regulatory approvals.

The development represents another major step in the refinery’s plans to broaden its ownership base and raise additional capital for future growth.

The company has been preparing for a retail-focused Nigerian IPO, with management previously indicating that the offering is intended to give Nigerian investors an opportunity to participate directly in the refinery's growth.

The proposed $5 billion offering has attracted considerable attention because of its potential scale.

Dangote Refinery is Africa’s largest refinery, with an initial refining capacity of about 650,000 barrels per day. The company has also set out plans to increase capacity to approximately 1.4 million barrels per day within three years, with the expansion expected to be financed partly through IPO proceeds and debt.

The refinery's management has said preparations for the IPO are progressing, while investor interest has been strong during pre-marketing activities.

A $2.5 billion private placement in July reportedly valued the refinery at around $40 billion. The transaction was said to have been heavily oversubscribed, attracting interest from African and international institutional investors.

Dangote Refinery has also strengthened its position in international fuel markets amid disruptions linked to the conflict involving Iran.

The refinery has become a major supplier of aviation fuel to markets across Africa and Western Europe, with its management saying it became Europe's largest supplier of jet fuel in June and July.

The company also benefits from its access to Nigeria's crude oil resources, strong domestic fuel demand and its integrated refining operations.

Unlike plans for an immediate foreign listing, the company currently intends to focus its IPO on the Nigerian market.

Dangote Refinery's CEO, David Bird, said the company wants the offering to encourage broad participation by Nigerians and create an opportunity for citizens to share in the refinery's future growth.

A potential foreign listing could be considered later, after the company establishes a longer track record of production and financial performance.

With the new $400 million underwriting commitment and preparations for a potential $5 billion offering continuing, the Dangote Refinery IPO is shaping up to be a major development for Nigeria's capital market and the country's energy sector.

Sports › WAFCON 2026: Cameroon Make History With First Title After 3-0 Win Over Malawi by Dharmocherish(op): 1:46pm On Aug 17
Cameroon have made history by winning their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after defeating Malawi 3-0 in the 2026 final in Rabat, Morocco.

The Indomitable Lionesses produced a dominant first-half performance to secure the continental crown, with Marie Ngah scoring twice before Naomi Ndjoah Eto added the third goal.

The victory ends Cameroon's long wait for the women's continental championship. The team had previously reached the final on three occasions but failed to lift the trophy. Their fourth appearance in the final finally delivered the title.

Ngah's Double Puts Cameroon in Control

Cameroon established control of the final during the opening half, with Ngah finding the net twice to put her side in a commanding position.

Eto then completed the scoring, giving Cameroon a three-goal advantage before the interval. Malawi were unable to produce a comeback as Cameroon's defence maintained its composure throughout the second half.

The result was particularly significant for Malawi, who were appearing in the WAFCON tournament for the first time and had produced one of the competition's biggest surprises by reaching the final.

Historic Run for Malawi

Malawi's journey to the final was remarkable considering their ranking and lack of previous WAFCON final experience. Ranked 153rd in the world, they became the lowest-ranked team to reach a WAFCON final.

The Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, were among the key figures behind Malawi's impressive campaign, with their goals helping the team advance deep into the competition.

Although they ultimately fell short against Cameroon, Malawi's run represented a landmark achievement for women's football in the country.

Cameroon Overcome Nigeria and Morocco

Cameroon's path to the trophy included victories over two of the tournament's leading teams.

The Indomitable Lionesses eliminated defending champions Nigeria in the quarter-finals before overcoming hosts Morocco in the semi-finals. They then completed their remarkable campaign by defeating Malawi in the final.

Cameroon also finished the tournament with one of the strongest defensive records, conceding only two goals throughout the competition and none during the knockout stage.

Ngock Named Woman of the Competition

Cameroon's Monique Ngock was named the Woman of the Competition after an outstanding tournament.

Ngock played a key role in Cameroon's successful campaign, starting five of their six matches and contributing an assist during the tournament.

Malawi's Temwa Chawinga, meanwhile, finished the tournament as the Golden Boot winner, highlighting the individual quality that helped drive Malawi's historic campaign.

Cameroon's triumph marks a new chapter in the country's women's football history and gives the Indomitable Lionesses their long-awaited first WAFCON crown.

Politics › Osun Election: Security Operatives Intensify Patrols Across Ile-ife by Dharmocherish(op): 9:42am On Aug 15
Security agencies have increased patrols and surveillance across Ile-Ife, Osun State, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, as authorities move to prevent violence and protect residents and electoral materials.

The heightened security presence was noticeable across the ancient city on Friday, August 14, a day before voters are scheduled to cast their ballots. Personnel were deployed along major roads and other strategic locations as final preparations for the election continued.

Security officers were seen in areas including Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Mayfair, Lagere and Garage-Ilesa, among other locations.

Despite the increased deployment, normal activities continued in the city, with no major disruption reported as of Friday.

The Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were among the security agencies deployed to monitor the election and maintain law and order.

The agencies are expected to remain on the ground before, during and after voting as part of efforts to safeguard voters, electoral officials and sensitive election materials.

The intensified patrols are also aimed at preventing electoral violence, malpractice and other criminal activities that could disrupt the exercise.

With the election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, security authorities are expected to maintain their presence across key locations throughout the voting period.

Residents have been urged to exercise their civic rights peacefully and avoid actions capable of threatening public safety or interfering with the electoral process.

The heightened security measures come as political activities reach their peak in Osun, with authorities seeking to ensure that voters can participate in the election without intimidation or disruption.

The security agencies have also been tasked with ensuring that electoral materials are protected and that the movement of voters and officials does not become a source of conflict.

As Osun heads to the polls, attention will remain on the ability of security agencies to maintain a peaceful environment throughout the election and the announcement of the results.

Crime › Troops Arrest Dogo Gide’s Alleged Ally, 60 Suspected Terrorist Collaborators by Dharmocherish(op): 11:16pm On Aug 13
Nigerian security forces have arrested a suspected terrorist operative allegedly connected to notorious terror figure Dogo Gide, alongside 60 other suspected collaborators in separate operations across the country.

The arrests were recorded between August 12 and 13, 2026, according to a military situation report released in Abuja on Thursday.

In Kaduna State, troops of the 4 Demonstration Battalion reportedly intercepted a suspected ISWAP operative at the Kadage Checkpoint. The suspect was allegedly transporting seven pairs of sewn foreign camouflage uniforms believed to be destined for a terrorist camp.

Military authorities said preliminary questioning indicated that the suspect was a close associate of Dogo Gide and had allegedly been providing logistical assistance to his network.

Items recovered during the arrest included 23 yards of foreign camouflage material, two mobile phones, three ATM cards and an identity card, among other materials.

In Adamawa State, troops from the 226 Battalion, working alongside local hunters, conducted a raid on a motor park in the Gombi area following intelligence reports concerning suspected terrorist collaborators.

The military said some of the suspects were allegedly operating under the cover of menial workers and hawkers. The operation resulted in the arrest of 60 people, who have been detained while investigations continue.

Authorities are expected to establish the identities of those arrested and determine whether they have links to terrorist activities.

The military also reported a significant recovery in Zamfara State, where troops of the 1 Brigade found an RPG bomb during a fighting patrol around Tunga-Jambako in Maradun Local Government Area.

The recovery followed an earlier terrorist ambush in the area. Troops subsequently carried out searches and expanded their presence to prevent further attacks and restrict the movement of suspected terrorists.

In Benue State, troops operating under Operation Whirl Stroke arrested five suspected terrorists during offensive operations around suspected terrorist enclaves in Chito, Jootar and Ikyior, all in Ukum Local Government Area.

The military said the troops destroyed the identified enclaves and recovered two motorcycles and two locally fabricated firearms, among other items.

The report also disclosed that troops in Borno State intercepted five women and seven children believed to be family members of terrorists after they reportedly escaped from the Gazuwa Camp.

Separately, six male children were intercepted at Ajiri after reportedly fleeing Murofari Village, where violent clashes had occurred between rival terrorist groups.

The military said the operations demonstrate its continued reliance on intelligence-led actions to disrupt terrorist logistics, dismantle support networks and restrict the freedom of movement of armed groups across the country.

Education › 2,400 Kajiado Pupils To Receive Hygiene Support Under New Programme by Dharmocherish(op): 6:51pm On Aug 12
About 2,400 school-age children and adolescents in Kajiado County, Kenya, are set to benefit from a new programme providing hygiene supplies and education on water, sanitation and hygiene.

The initiative is being implemented in Bisil, where pupils from Inkati and Noontoto primary schools will participate in sessions focused on practical hygiene habits. Beneficiaries will also receive personal hygiene kits to help them put the lessons into practice.

The programme is part of the Clean Futures Alliance, launched in Kenya by Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) and Feed the Children through the FedEx Cares programme.

Beyond classroom education, volunteers from FedEx are participating in the preparation and distribution of the hygiene kits. The approach is designed to ensure that children have access to both information and basic supplies needed to maintain good hygiene.

The intervention comes as communities in Kajiado continue to face challenges related to access to water, sanitation and hygiene services. Schools therefore provide an important platform for reaching children with health information and practical support.

FedEx's Managing Director of Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa, Nelson Teixeira, said the company's community-focused work goes beyond its core logistics business and aims to connect communities with resources that can improve their wellbeing.

Feed the Children's President and CEO, Emily Callahan, also highlighted the wider benefits of hygiene support, noting that access to essential supplies can contribute to children's health, confidence and ability to remain engaged in school.

The programme is expected to strengthen hygiene awareness among children in Bisil while providing families and schools with practical resources to support healthier daily routines.

Crime › NAF Strike Kills ISWAP Commander, Eight Fighters In Borno by Dharmocherish(op): 10:13pm On Aug 09
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says an intelligence-led air operation has killed a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and eight other fighters in Borno State.

The operation was carried out by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, the military's counter-insurgency operation in the North-East. According to the NAF, the strike targeted suspected terrorists operating in the Sambisa Forest after intelligence reports provided information about their movements.

The Air Force said it deployed a remotely piloted aircraft to monitor and track the suspected fighters as they moved towards a hideout. After confirming the target, the aircraft carried out a precision strike on the location.

A subsequent assessment of the operation indicated that several fighters had been neutralised. The NAF later received additional intelligence confirming that nine ISWAP fighters were killed, while others sustained injuries.

Among those reportedly killed was Abu Khalid Al Muhajir, whom the Air Force identified as an important ISWAP commander responsible for providing security escorts for senior members of the terrorist organisation.

According to the NAF, Al Muhajir's death could significantly affect ISWAP's operations because of his reported knowledge of routes, terrain and movement patterns linking several terrorist enclaves in the Sambisa Forest and surrounding areas.

The Air Force also said intelligence suggested that some of the fighters affected by the strike may have been connected to elements suspected of involvement in a recent ambush on Nigerian troops along the Bita–Yamtage axis in Gwoza Local Government Area.

The latest operation forms part of continued military efforts to weaken terrorist networks operating across Borno and other parts of the North-East.

The NAF said its intelligence, surveillance and precision-strike capabilities would continue to be used in coordination with ground troops to disrupt terrorist movements, weaken their operational capacity and prevent them from regrouping.

The service maintained that the latest strike would also disrupt ISWAP's ability to protect senior commanders and coordinate activities between its various enclaves.

The military's intensified operations come as security forces continue to confront ISWAP and other insurgent groups operating in the North-East, while also working to protect communities and military formations from further attacks.

Culture › Okpanachi Succeeds Father As Odoma Ochogwu Ogugua Of Igala Kingdom by Dharmocherish(op): 8:51pm On Aug 09
Okpanachi has assumed the traditional title of Odoma Ochogwu Ogugua of the Igala Kingdom, succeeding his late father and extending a family legacy within the Igala traditional institution.

The succession marks a significant moment for the family and the wider Igala community, as the new title holder takes on responsibilities associated with the traditional position and the preservation of Igala cultural heritage.

Okpanachi's appointment follows the death of his father, who previously occupied the position. The transition allows the family to continue its longstanding connection with the traditional institution while entrusting the new holder with the responsibilities of the office.

The Odoma Ochogwu Ogugua title is associated with the Igala traditional system, which plays an important role in preserving the community's customs, history and social values.

Following his emergence, attention is expected to focus on Okpanachi's ability to build on his father's contributions while responding to the expectations attached to the traditional office.

His succession also highlights the enduring role of traditional institutions in maintaining cultural identity and community cohesion, particularly at a time when younger generations are increasingly seeking ways to preserve indigenous heritage.

Members of the Igala community and well-wishers have continued to celebrate the transition, with expectations that the new title holder will uphold the values associated with the position and contribute positively to the development of the community.

The development represents not only a change in leadership within the traditional office but also the continuation of a family legacy that has been closely linked to the Igala institution.

Celebrities › Akon Reveals What Made Him Question P-square’s Management by Dharmocherish(op): 6:20pm On Aug 09
.Senegalese-American music star Akon has spoken about his experience working with Nigerian music duo P-Square, revealing that he noticed problems with the group's management during one of their international collaborations.

Akon made the revelation during an interview with Afrocani, where he reflected on his professional relationship with Peter and Paul Okoye and their management team.

According to the singer, one of the moments that made him question the way the group was being managed involved Nigerian artiste May D, whose vocals featured on a song but who was initially expected to be left out of the accompanying music video.

Akon said he considered the decision unfair, particularly because May D had contributed his voice to the record. He therefore insisted that the singer should be included in the video and invited him to the United States for the production.

The international star explained that, from his perspective, success should create opportunities for talented people rather than prevent them from receiving recognition for their contributions.

Akon's comments have resurfaced as renewed attention is being drawn to the history of disagreements surrounding P-Square and the management of the duo during their years at the height of their career.

May D had previously spoken about the episode, corroborating Akon's account of the collaboration. He said Akon insisted on his participation in the video and even offered him additional opportunities in the United States.

May D, however, acknowledged that he later made the mistake of telling the P-Square brothers about some of his conversations with Akon.

The episode has since become part of the broader story surrounding the business relationships and management structure that existed around P-Square during their most successful years.

P-Square, made up of twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, became one of Africa's biggest music acts before their highly publicised disagreements eventually led to their split. The brothers later reunited in 2021, although their relationship has since faced renewed difficulties.

Akon's relationship with P-Square dates back to their international expansion. He collaborated with the duo on “Chop My Money”, alongside May D, following P-Square's partnership with his Konvict Muzik label.

His latest comments have therefore added another perspective to the long-running conversation about the factors that contributed to tensions within the P-Square camp.

Foreign Affairs › Iran-us Diplomacy: Pezeshkian Insists Tehran Has Not Changed Position by Dharmocherish(op): 5:36pm On Aug 08
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has maintained that Tehran's fundamental position toward the United States remains unchanged despite recent diplomatic contacts between the two countries.

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday, Pezeshkian described the United States as a colonialist and criminal power, while insisting that Iran's national principles and political identity had not been compromised by the recent engagement with Washington.

The Iranian president argued that the diplomatic process should not be interpreted as a change in Tehran's long-standing stance toward the US. Rather, he said, the negotiations demonstrated that Washington had been compelled to engage with Iran through dialogue.

Pezeshkian also defended the memorandum recently concluded between Iran and the United States, rejecting criticism that Tehran had surrendered important interests in exchange for diplomatic progress.

According to the president, the agreement contains no provision requiring Iran to abandon its national interests or core positions. He maintained that Tehran remains firmly committed to the document despite the criticism it has attracted at home.

The president further accused Washington of failing to fully honour the understanding, particularly over arrangements concerning shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. He said the US had pursued alternative routes instead of following the procedures that Iran and Oman were expected to jointly establish.

Pezeshkian said any disagreements over the implementation of the memorandum should be handled through the mechanisms established under the agreement. He expressed hope that the diplomatic process would continue while preserving Iran's dignity and national interests.

The Iranian leader also defended members of his negotiating team against domestic criticism, describing them as committed professionals who had worked hard to advance Iran's interests during the discussions with the United States.

His comments come amid continued efforts to resolve disagreements between Tehran and Washington, particularly those surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for international energy shipments. Recent negotiations have involved Iran, the United States and regional intermediaries, including Oman.

While diplomatic engagement has increased, Pezeshkian's remarks underline the continued political differences between the two countries. Tehran appears willing to pursue negotiations while maintaining that such engagement does not amount to abandoning its broader foreign-policy principles.

Politics › Osun Election: IGP Disu Assures Voters Of Police Neutrality, Professionalism by Dharmocherish(op): 10:08pm On Aug 07
The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has assured residents of Osun State and other Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will remain professional, apolitical and impartial throughout the August 15 governorship election.

Disu gave the assurance on Friday in Abuja while meeting with a delegation of civil society organisations led by Auwal Rafsanjani, Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC). The meeting focused on security preparations and concerns surrounding the forthcoming poll.

The police chief acknowledged concerns over possible electoral violence, voter intimidation, political thuggery and the perceived neutrality of security agencies. He said the concerns were legitimate and required transparency and concrete measures from law enforcement authorities.

Disu said the police had already put comprehensive security arrangements in place for the election and stressed that the force has no preferred candidate or political party. He maintained that its primary responsibility is to ensure that voters are able to freely exercise their constitutional rights.

He further disclosed that officers assigned to election duties had been reminded of their constitutional obligations to enforce the law fairly and without favour. Adequate personnel and operational resources have also been deployed across the state, while intelligence gathering and threat assessments have been intensified ahead of the poll.

The IGP warned that anyone involved in vote buying, voter intimidation, ballot box snatching, political thuggery or other electoral offences would face legal consequences, irrespective of their political affiliation or status.

Disu also appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to avoid violence and conduct their campaigns responsibly. He urged Osun residents to participate peacefully and report suspicious activities to security personnel.

Speaking earlier, Rafsanjani said civil society organisations would continue working with security agencies to support a free, fair and credible election. Yiaga Africa Executive Director Samson Itodo described the Osun election as an important test for Nigeria's electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sports › Jessica Oji Makes History With World U20 Shot Put Gold For Nigeria by Dharmocherish(op): 4:41pm On Aug 07
Nigeria’s Jessica Oji has achieved a historic milestone at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, winning gold in the women’s shot put and becoming the country’s first-ever champion in a field event at the competition.

The 19-year-old produced a winning mark of 18.08 metres to secure the title in impressive fashion. Oji was the only competitor in the final to surpass the 18-metre barrier, underlining her dominance throughout the competition.

Oji opened the final with an 18.05m throw before improving to her winning distance of 18.08m. She followed that with 17.95m and 18.07m, while two of her attempts were recorded as fouls. Her consistency was enough to keep her ahead of the field and secure the gold medal.

The victory marks a breakthrough for Nigeria in the field events at the World U20 Championships. Before Oji's triumph, the country's previous field-event medals at the competition were Esther Aghatise's long-jump silver in 2002 and Chinecherem Nnamdi's javelin bronze in 2021.

Oji's achievement comes during an extraordinary year in which she switched her international allegiance from the United States to Nigeria. She has quickly established herself as one of the country's brightest young field-event talents.

Her World U20 triumph also comes shortly after another major international achievement. Oji won silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding a senior-level medal to her growing collection before claiming the world junior title in Oregon.

The historic performance provides another major boost for Nigerian athletics, particularly in the field events, where the country has traditionally enjoyed greater success in sprinting and jumping disciplines. Nigeria's Super Falcons secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C fixture. The emphatic win completed a strong recovery following the team's opening defeat in the tournament.

The Falcons made a blistering start, with Rinsola Babajide opening the scoring before captain Rasheedat Ajibade added another to put Nigeria firmly in control. Egypt responded with goals of their own, but the nine-time African champions maintained their attacking intensity throughout the contest.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially designated Beijing as the World Capital of Architecture 2029 under its joint programme with the International Union of Architects (UIA). The honour recognises the city's unique ability to preserve its rich architectural heritage while embracing innovation and sustainable urban development.

UNESCO said Beijing was selected because of its successful integration of historic landmarks, modern urban renewal projects and vibrant architectural culture. According to the organisation, the Chinese capital demonstrates how heritage conservation, innovation and community-centred planning can work together to create resilient and liveable cities.

The World Capital of Architecture programme was launched by UNESCO and the UIA to highlight the role of architecture, urban planning and cultural heritage in achieving sustainable urban development. The title is awarded every three years to the city hosting the UIA World Congress of Architects, which Beijing will stage in 2029.

UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany approved the designation following a recommendation from the programme's joint committee. Beijing now joins previous title holders Rio de Janeiro (2020), Copenhagen (2023) and Barcelona (2026).

The recognition is expected to provide Beijing with a global platform to showcase its architectural achievements and promote dialogue on sustainable city planning, cultural preservation and future urban design ahead of the 2029 congress.

Foreign Affairs › Iran, Oman Agree Shipping Route Through Strait Of Hormuz, Tehran Confirms by Dharmocherish(op): 9:26pm On Aug 05
Iran has announced that it has reached an agreement with Oman on the geographic route for commercial vessels transiting the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant step toward restoring confidence in one of the world's busiest energy shipping lanes.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said negotiations between Tehran and Muscat had been constructive and that both countries had agreed on the coordinates of the proposed shipping corridor. He added that a joint announcement detailing the arrangement would be issued after final technical reviews, provided there is no external interference.

The proposed framework would see vessels entering the Persian Gulf navigate through an Iran-managed route, while outbound traffic would follow a corridor coordinated with Oman. Although the understanding represents major diplomatic progress, officials stressed that discussions on implementation and security arrangements are still ongoing.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Disruptions in the waterway in recent months have heightened concerns over energy supplies and global trade, making the latest agreement an important development for regional stability.

Despite the announcement, officials cautioned that the agreement has not yet been fully finalised and will require approval of remaining details before taking effect. Observers say the arrangement could also create momentum for broader diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States over regional security and other outstanding issues.

Politics › 2027: Amaechi Has No Electoral Value In Rivers State - Wike by Dharmocherish(op): 12:13am On Aug 05
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as a politician with no meaningful electoral value in Rivers State or the South-South region.

Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Wike argued that Amaechi has consistently failed to deliver significant votes in presidential elections despite serving as a two-term governor of Rivers State, Director-General of presidential campaigns, and a senior minister in the federal government. He questioned the basis for Amaechi's political relevance ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike further claimed that if Amaechi is being considered for a major national political role, such as a vice-presidential candidate, it could not be because of his electoral strength. According to the FCT minister, Amaechi's record in previous elections does not demonstrate the capacity to influence voting outcomes in Rivers State.

The minister also insisted that Rivers State remains firmly under his political influence, maintaining that opposition parties would struggle to make electoral gains in the state. He argued that the support his political structure enjoys is based on governance and development projects delivered to the people.

Wike's remarks add another chapter to the long-running political rivalry between the two former Rivers governors, as political alignments continue to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
