Two current and former Mississippi State track and field athletes delivered medal-winning performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, earning international recognition for Jamaica and Nigeria. Former Bulldog Navasky Anderson claimed gold in the men's 800 metres, producing a commanding performance to cross the finish line in 1:45.33. His victory made history as he became the first Jamaican man to win the Commonwealth Games title in the event. Anderson's triumph also lifted him to 11th in the men's 800m world rankings. Rising Mississippi State junior Nicholas Fakorede also returned with a medal after helping Nigeria secure bronze in the men's 4x100 metres relay. Fakorede ran the third leg of the race, playing a key role in Nigeria's podium finish after a dramatic post-race review that briefly elevated the team to silver before Canada successfully appealed its disqualification. Fakorede also impressed in the individual 100 metres, advancing to the semi-finals and narrowly missing a place in the final by just 0.01 seconds after clocking 10.06 seconds. Mississippi State also celebrated strong performances from other former athletes, with Lee Eppie and Anderson Peters both finishing fourth in the men's 400 metres and javelin throw, respectively, narrowly missing out on medals. https://www.lagoslately.com/mississippi-state-duo-win-commonwealth-games-medals-for-jamaica-and-nigeria/

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to base his 2027 re-election campaign on the performance of his administration rather than political propaganda. He argued that Nigerians would judge the president by his record in office, not by campaign rhetoric. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily, Momodu said there was no personal hostility towards Tinubu, insisting that what voters want to see are tangible achievements that have improved their lives. He maintained that if the administration has delivered on its promises, presenting a credible scorecard should be enough to convince Nigerians to support another term. Momodu also advised members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to focus on highlighting the government's accomplishments instead of engaging in political attacks against opponents. According to him, the electorate is more interested in governance outcomes than partisan exchanges. The veteran journalist questioned the APC's continued practice of blaming previous administrations for the country's challenges after spending more than three years in office. He argued that Nigerians now expect solutions and measurable progress rather than explanations about inherited problems. His comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, with parties and prospective candidates positioning themselves for what is expected to be another highly contested presidential race. https://www.lagoslately.com/dele-momodu-urges-tinubu-to-campaign-on-performance-not-propaganda-ahead-of-2027/

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a suspected human trafficker and rescued a 25-year-old woman during an operation targeting human trafficking and other organised crimes. The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to dismantle trafficking networks and protect vulnerable persons. According to police authorities, the suspect was apprehended following credible intelligence, while the victim was successfully rescued before she could be moved to an undisclosed destination. Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman may have been deceived with false promises before falling into the suspect's custody. Police said the rescued woman is receiving the necessary care and support while investigators work to uncover the full extent of the trafficking operation and identify other individuals who may be connected to the syndicate. The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue. The command reiterated its commitment to combating human trafficking and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities involving the recruitment, movement or exploitation of individuals. It also encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and verify employment or travel offers before accepting them. Authorities assured that anyone found involved in human trafficking or related offences would face prosecution in accordance with the law as efforts continue to curb the crime across the country. https://www.lagoslately.com/police-arrest-suspected-human-trafficker-rescue-25-year-old-woman/

Nigeria's Super Falcons bounced back from their opening defeat at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia in Rabat, reigniting their hopes of defending their continental title. Veteran striker Asisat Oshoala proved the difference, scoring the only goal of the match in the eighth minute to hand the nine-time African champions a priceless three points. The goal marked her 15th career WAFCON goal, further cementing her status as one of the tournament's greatest players. Nigeria's task became significantly harder before halftime when defender Blessing Demehin received a straight red card for fouling Zambia captain Barbra Banda, forcing the Super Falcons to play most of the encounter with 10 players. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the team produced a disciplined defensive display to protect their early lead until the final whistle. The victory came after Nigeria's shock opening defeat to Malawi and leaves the Super Falcons firmly back in contention for a place in the knockout stage. Head coach Justine Madugu praised his players' resilience, while Oshoala's experience once again proved decisive in a high-pressure encounter. With three points now secured, Nigeria will turn its attention to its final Group C fixture, knowing another positive result could be enough to book a place in the quarter-finals and keep alive its quest for a record-extending WAFCON title. https://www.lagoslately.com/wafcon-2026-super-falcons-edge-zambia-1-0-as-oshoala-revives-nigerias-title-hopes/

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the 2027 presidential nomination of former President Goodluck Jonathan submitted by the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing non-compliance with its candidate nomination procedures. The electoral commission maintained that only a legally recognised party leadership with authorised access to INEC's electronic candidate nomination portal can validly submit candidates for elections. Since the Turaki-led group is not recognised by the commission, its manual submission of Jonathan's nomination was not accepted. Despite the rejection, the Turaki faction insisted it had complied with the Electoral Act by manually submitting Jonathan's name along with those of its governorship, National Assembly and state assembly candidates. The group also argued that it resorted to manual submission after INEC allegedly denied it access to the nomination portal and disclosed that it has appealed a recent court ruling relating to the PDP leadership dispute. Meanwhile, the officially recognised PDP leadership dismissed the submission as "illegal and worthless," stressing that only candidates nominated by the party's recognised national leadership can be accepted by INEC. The leadership dispute within the opposition party continues to generate uncertainty ahead of preparations for the 2027 general election. The development represents another twist in the PDP's internal crisis, with the final outcome expected to depend on pending court decisions and INEC's recognition of the party's legitimate leadership. https://www.lagoslately.com/inec-rejects-jonathans-2027-presidential-nomination-submitted-by-pdp-faction/

Former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has explained that his decision to suspend his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was driven by what he described as persistent hostility and frustration within the party. Lukman said he could no longer endure what he termed "painful hostile treatment," particularly from former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and some political associates. According to him, he had been repeatedly sidelined in key decisions concerning the party's leadership and structure in Kaduna State despite his efforts to strengthen the opposition coalition. He maintained that his decision was not a protest against the national leadership of the ADC but a response to what he viewed as sustained political marginalisation at the state level. Lukman added that remaining inactive was preferable to continuing in an environment where his contributions were no longer valued. The former APC chieftain also expressed concern that some leaders within the coalition were beginning to replicate the same political practices they had previously criticised, warning that such actions could weaken the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Lukman stressed that he would use the period away from active party politics to reflect on his next political steps, while expressing appreciation to ADC National Chairman David Mark and other national leaders for their efforts. His announcement has added to growing discussions about internal cohesion within the opposition coalition. https://www.lagoslately.com/salihu-lukman-explains-why-he-suspended-adc-membership/

The Nigerian naira strengthened significantly against the British pound in the official foreign exchange market, closing at ₦1,814 per £1, marking its strongest performance against the British currency in July. The latest appreciation reflects the naira's continued recovery against the pound this year. The local currency has gained considerable ground from the ₦1,950/£ level recorded toward the end of last year, indicating improved stability in Nigeria's foreign exchange market. Market analysts attributed the rebound to ongoing reforms in the foreign exchange market and the Central Bank of Nigeria's efforts to clear outstanding FX backlogs. These measures have helped narrow the gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates while reducing opportunities for currency arbitrage. The pound-naira exchange rate has recently traded within a relatively stable range of ₦1,810 to ₦1,830 per pound, suggesting that the market is experiencing a period of consolidation following recent volatility. Despite the positive movement against the pound, analysts note that the naira's future performance will continue to depend on factors such as foreign exchange inflows, investor confidence, oil export earnings, and the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policies aimed at supporting liquidity in the FX market. https://www.lagoslately.com/naira-strengthens-against-british-pound-settles-at-%e2%82%a61814/

Accord Party presidential aspirant Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has criticised President Bola Tinubu's approach to tackling insecurity, saying Nigeria is effectively at war but lacks a clear and coordinated strategy to defeat terrorist groups and criminal gangs. Hashim argued that despite ongoing military operations, terrorists and armed criminal groups continue to dictate the pace of violence in several parts of the country. He maintained that the nation's security challenges require more than isolated military offensives, calling instead for a comprehensive national strategy backed by strong political leadership. According to him, Nigeria's armed forces possess the capacity to restore security if provided with consistent direction, adequate support, and a clearly defined mission. He stressed that defeating insecurity requires improved intelligence gathering, stronger inter-agency coordination, and sustained political commitment. Hashim further urged the federal government to treat the country's security situation with greater urgency, warning that prolonged instability could continue to undermine economic growth, investment, and public confidence in government institutions. His comments come amid ongoing national debate over security policy, even as the Tinubu administration has announced measures including expanding the Nigerian Army and increasing investment in technology and military capabilities to address the country's security threats. https://www.lagoslately.com/hashim-nigeria-is-at-war-tinubu-lacks-clear-strategy-to-end-insecurity/

OpenAI has officially launched Health in ChatGPT for users in the United States, introducing a new feature that enables eligible adults to securely connect their Apple Health data and supported medical records directly within ChatGPT. The rollout is currently available to users aged 18 and above on the web and iOS platforms. The feature allows users to import information such as medical records, laboratory results, medications, allergies, fitness activity, sleep data, and other health metrics from Apple Health and participating healthcare providers. ChatGPT can then use this information to provide more personalised explanations and help users better understand their health information. OpenAI said users remain in control of their information, with connected health data protected through additional encryption and excluded from training the company's AI models. The company also emphasised that Health in ChatGPT is designed to complement—not replace—professional medical advice or clinical care. The launch marks a significant expansion of OpenAI's healthcare ambitions, aiming to help users prepare for medical appointments, understand test results, organise health records, and receive contextual explanations based on their personal data. Support is expected to expand to additional healthcare providers over time. The rollout comes amid growing discussions about the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare, with experts welcoming the technology's potential while continuing to stress the importance of consulting qualified healthcare professionals for diagnosis, treatment, and emergency medical decisions. https://www.lagoslately.com/openai-launchs-health-in-chatgpt-for-us-users-integrates-apple-health-and-medical-records/

President Bola Tinubu has approved what is being described as Nigeria's most significant military expansion in recent decades, authorising the Nigerian Army to grow from eight to 12 divisions alongside the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel. The move is aimed at strengthening the country's response to persistent security challenges. According to the Presidency, the expansion forms part of a broader effort to modernise the Armed Forces through increased manpower, improved troop welfare, enhanced operational readiness, and the acquisition of critical military equipment. The government says the reforms are intended to improve the military's capacity to combat insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal violence, and other security threats across the country. Under the new structure, four additional divisions will be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City. The first phase, covering the creation of the 5th, 9th, and 10th Divisions, is expected to be completed by September 2026, while the second phase, including the establishment of the 83rd Division, is scheduled for completion by December 2026. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the expansion would improve command and control, decentralise operational decision-making, strengthen border security, enhance the protection of critical national infrastructure, and enable faster military responses to emerging threats nationwide. President Tinubu also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, as well as officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their dedication and professionalism. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring the Armed Forces remain adequately equipped and prepared to safeguard Nigeria's sovereignty and protect its citizens. https://www.lagoslately.com/tinubu-approves-largest-nigerian-army-expansion-in-decades/

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three men connected to the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offences. Justice Salim Ibrahim handed down the sentences after Abdulrazak Umar (also known as Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (Yunusa bin Musa), and Shamsu Adamu Sani (Abu Itisar) admitted guilt to several counts filed by the Federal Government. The charges stemmed from their alleged involvement in the May 2026 abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire. The court imposed life imprisonment on all three convicts for membership of a proscribed terrorist organisation and sentenced them to an additional 25 years for concealing information about the kidnapping plot. Umar, who pleaded guilty to four extra charges involving terrorist training, incitement, and related offences, received additional life sentences and a 20-year jail term on separate counts. Although the defendants admitted guilt to six of the ten charges against them, they pleaded not guilty to the remaining four counts, including conspiracy and aiding the abduction. The court adjourned proceedings on those charges until September for trial. The kidnapping, which occurred on May 15, saw dozens of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire LGA. Security forces later rescued the victims after weeks in captivity during a coordinated military operation that also led to the arrest of several suspected terrorists. https://www.lagoslately.com/court-sentences-three-linked-to-oyo-school-kidnap-to-life-imprisonment/

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has left the Nigerian camp in Morocco after sustaining an injury, as Nigeria turn their attention to the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff against Egypt. The Galatasaray forward reportedly picked up the injury during Nigeria’s semi-final defeat, after which he was assessed by the Super Eagles medical team.
