The Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce (NACC) has introduced Nigerian entrepreneurs, business executives and investors to an investment programme that offers eligible foreign nationals a pathway to permanent residency in the United States. The chamber organised an executive roundtable in Lagos on October 22, 2026, to explain the requirements and opportunities under the US EB-5 Immigrant Investor Programme. The engagement was themed “Exploring the U.S. EB-5 Immigrant Investor Programme: A Strategic Pathway to U.S. Permanent Residency and Global Mobility.” According to the chamber, the session was designed to help participants understand how qualifying investments can provide a route to US permanent residency, alongside opportunities for international business expansion. The EB-5 programme allows eligible foreign investors to apply for permanent residency by making qualifying investments that meet requirements established by US immigration authorities. These include conditions relating to job creation and other applicable investment criteria. The event was hosted by NACC National President, Alhaji Sheriff Balogun, while Moussa Ndiaye, Vice President of Business Development and Head of Europe, Middle East and Africa at U.S. Immigration Fund, spoke on the programme and how prospective applicants could navigate its requirements. Grace Adeyemo, chairperson of the chamber’s Trade and Investment Committee, also participated in the discussion. The roundtable was sponsored by U.S. Immigration Fund and brought together business leaders, entrepreneurs and prospective investors interested in learning about investment-linked immigration options. The NACC said the initiative formed part of its broader efforts to promote investment education, encourage international business engagement and strengthen economic relations between Nigeria and the United States. The chamber added that it would continue to provide platforms for business networking, investment facilitation and bilateral trade cooperation. However, participation in the programme does not guarantee permanent residency. Prospective applicants must meet the relevant investment, job-creation and immigration requirements set by US authorities. https://www.lagoslately.com/nacc-introduces-nigerian-entrepreneurs-to-us-eb-5-investment-programme/

Russian President Vladimir Putin has invited African airlines to begin operating flights to Russia as Moscow seeks to strengthen trade, tourism and economic cooperation with countries across the continent. Putin made the invitation on Wednesday, October 28, while addressing the plenary session of the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum in Moscow. He said Russia was ready to expand its partnerships with African countries in areas including trade, energy, pharmaceuticals and transportation. The Russian leader said Moscow was prepared to support the development of reliable logistics networks to facilitate trade and investment between Russia and Africa. He also offered Russian expertise in the design, construction and modernisation of roads, railways, maritime routes and transport hubs. According to Putin, these facilities could be equipped with digital systems for management, cargo tracking and customs declarations. Putin expressed confidence that trade between Russia and African countries could exceed $50 billion in the near future. He disclosed that bilateral trade surpassed $27 billion in 2025, compared with $18 billion in 2022, and said both sides had the potential to increase the figure significantly. He also revealed that Russia was involved in more than 30 potential energy projects across 16 African countries, highlighting energy as another area for expanded cooperation. In the pharmaceutical sector, Putin said Russia planned to support local production of medicines and vaccines in Africa, alongside the establishment of laboratories and diagnostic centres. The forum is taking place alongside the Russia-Africa summit, which brings together African leaders and representatives to discuss cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure, energy and other areas. Putin's invitation could create opportunities for African airlines to explore direct routes to Russian destinations, potentially improving connectivity for passengers and businesses. However, the announcement did not identify specific airlines or confirm when new routes might begin operating. https://www.lagoslately.com/putin-invites-african-airlines-to-launch-direct-flights-to-russia/

Spanish football club Real Madrid has apologised to the Chinese people following controversy surrounding comments made by its French forward, Kylian Mbappé, about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. The club issued the apology on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after Mbappé’s remarks triggered widespread criticism in China, prompting several Chinese companies to terminate their commercial partnerships with the football star. In a statement, Real Madrid expressed regret over any offence caused by the player’s comments and reaffirmed its respect for China, its history, culture and citizens, including the millions of Chinese supporters who follow the club. The statement also acknowledged Mbappé’s personal apology, in which the France captain expressed regret and reiterated his respect for the Chinese people. The controversy began after a video from an interview with the French podcast The Bridge circulated online. In the clip, Mbappé discussed an internet meme featuring his face superimposed on an image of Mao, describing the former Chinese leader as a dictator. The video was subsequently removed from the programme’s social media accounts, but the remarks had already generated significant backlash among Chinese football fans and social media users. Mbappé issued an apology on Tuesday, acknowledging that his comments had been ill-judged and had hurt people in China and Chinese communities around the world. The 27-year-old said offending people was not his intention and reiterated his respect for China and its history. His statement was published in French, Chinese and English. However, the apology did not immediately end the controversy. Chinese companies, including dairy producers Mengniu and Shanghai Milkground Food Tech, as well as beverage company Eastroc, announced that they were ending their commercial relationships with the footballer. Chinese social media platforms also restricted activity involving Mbappé’s accounts, while the country’s state broadcaster suspended coverage of Spanish LaLiga matches. The controversy prompted LaLiga president Javier Tebas to establish a crisis unit to address the situation and its potential impact on the league’s relationship with Chinese fans and commercial partners. Tebas also apologised to Chinese supporters, expressing regret over the offence caused by Mbappé’s comments and promising measures to improve cultural awareness among clubs and players. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, said on Wednesday that Beijing took Mbappé’s apology seriously when asked about the player’s statement. The incident highlights the commercial and reputational risks international sports figures and organisations face when their remarks provoke controversy in China, a significant market for football broadcasting, sponsorships and merchandise. https://www.lagoslately.com/real-madrid-apologises-to-china-over-mbappes-mao-zedong-remarks/

Nigerian music star Burna Boy and Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka created a memorable moment at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony after the Grammy-winning singer presented the England international with the prestigious Sócrates Award. The ceremony took place at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26, bringing together leading figures from the worlds of football and entertainment. Burna Boy’s appearance marked a significant milestone, as he became the first Nigerian artiste to present an award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. His participation also highlighted the growing connection between African music and international football. Before announcing the winner, the singer spoke about his football academy in Nigeria, explaining that he established the initiative to support grassroots football development and help young talents pursue their dreams. “Something I started a few years ago, just to support the football culture back home. Hopefully, inshallah, one day I'll come back here to see one of my people getting an award in Ballon d'Or,” Burna Boy said. His remarks drew attention to his ambition of helping develop Nigerian football talents who could one day compete for some of the sport’s biggest individual honours. Saka received the Sócrates Award in recognition of his humanitarian and charitable activities away from the football pitch. The Arsenal winger, who has Nigerian heritage, was recognised for his involvement with BigShoe, an organisation that helps children in need access essential medical treatment. Through the initiative, Saka has supported life-changing operations for children, including surgeries in Nigeria. In 2022, he helped fund medical procedures for 120 children in Kano, while subsequent support extended to children in other African countries. The award recognises footballers who use their influence and resources to support humanitarian causes and make a positive impact in their communities. Established in 2022, it is named after the late Brazilian footballer Sócrates, who was known for his social activism as well as his achievements on the pitch. Saka’s recognition adds to his growing profile as a footballer committed to charitable work, while Burna Boy’s presence placed Nigerian entertainment on the international stage during one of football’s most prominent award ceremonies. The moment also resonated with Nigerian fans, as two figures of Nigerian heritage and influence featured prominently at an event celebrating excellence in global football. Burna Boy expressed hope that his football development initiative would eventually help produce a Nigerian player capable of winning the Ballon d’Or itself. His statement has added another dimension to the ceremony, shifting attention beyond the awards to the possibilities of grassroots football development in Nigeria. https://www.lagoslately.com/burna-boy-makes-history-as-he-presents-bukayo-saka-with-2026-socrates-award/

England captain and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has won the 2026 Men's Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English footballer in 25 years to claim the prestigious individual award. Kane was announced as the winner at the 70th edition of the Ballon d’Or ceremony held at the London Palladium in London on Monday, October 26, 2026. He finished ahead of France international Kylian Mbappé, who placed second, and Barcelona’s Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal, who came third. The 33-year-old forward enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 campaign, scoring 73 goals for club and country. His performances helped Bayern Munich retain their Bundesliga title and secure a domestic treble, while he also finished as the German league’s leading scorer for the third consecutive season. Kane scored 61 goals in 51 club appearances for Bayern Munich and added 12 goals for England. He also recorded 14 goals in the UEFA Champions League as Bayern reached the semi-finals of the competition. His contributions to the England national team further strengthened his case for the award, with the Three Lions finishing third at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kane scored six goals during the tournament. The victory makes Kane the fifth Englishman to win the men's Ballon d’Or, joining an exclusive list featuring Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen. Owen was the last English player to receive the honour in 2001, when he won following an impressive season with Liverpool. Kane's triumph therefore ends a 25-year wait for an English winner. Speaking after receiving the award, Kane described the campaign as the best of his career and acknowledged the contributions of his teammates, coaches and everyone who supported his journey. He credited the collective efforts of his Bayern Munich and England teammates for helping him achieve the remarkable goal-scoring record that contributed to his success. Meanwhile, Spain's Alexia Putellas won the 2026 Women's Ballon d’Or, securing the honour for the third time in her career after previous victories in 2021 and 2022. Putellas was recognised following a successful campaign with Barcelona before moving to London City Lionesses. Her latest victory also ended Aitana Bonmatí's three-year run as the women's award winner. Other winners at the ceremony included Yamal, who claimed the Men's Young Talent of the Year award, while Unai Simón won the men's goalkeeper award. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was named Men's Coach of the Year, and Paris Saint-Germain received the Men's Club of the Year honour. Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka received the Sócrates Award in recognition of his humanitarian work and social initiatives. The 2026 ceremony was held in London for the first time, marking the 70th anniversary of the award, which was first presented in 1956 to English footballer Sir Stanley Matthews. https://www.lagoslately.com/harry-kane-wins-2026-ballon-dor-ends-englands-25-year-wait/

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over reports that security personnel have been deployed to protect his campaign billboards in Kaduna State, urging the Federal Government to prioritise the safety of citizens amid persistent insecurity. Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks on Friday in a social media post reacting to reports that security operatives were guarding Tinubu’s campaign posters and billboards ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off scheduled for Saturday, October 24, in Kaduna. The former vice-president questioned why campaign materials required security protection while communities across the country continued to face threats from bandits, terrorists and kidnappers. “Bola, you claim Nigerians love you, yet your billboards in Kaduna require security guards,” Atiku wrote, arguing that the protection given to the posters contrasted with the insecurity experienced by many Nigerians. He added that the situation reflected what he described as misplaced priorities in the Tinubu administration, calling on the President to demonstrate the same urgency in protecting citizens as was being applied to safeguarding his campaign materials. Reports indicated that personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Kaduna State Traffic Law Enforcement Authority (KASTLEA), alongside other security operatives, were assigned to protect the billboards at strategic locations in Kaduna metropolis. A security operative was quoted as saying that the assignment was intended to prevent vandalism, particularly at night, before the planned campaign rally. The development comes ahead of the APC’s campaign launch in Kaduna, where Tinubu is expected to join party leaders and supporters as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election. Atiku’s comments have brought renewed attention to the issue of public security and the deployment of security personnel during political activities. The Presidency’s response to his latest criticism was not included in the reports reviewed. https://www.lagoslately.com/atiku-slams-tinubu-over-security-for-campaign-billboards-in-kaduna/

The Federal Government has inaugurated a committee to organise the Nigeria Marine and Blue Economy Expo (NIMBEX), an initiative aimed at attracting investment, creating jobs and unlocking the economic potential of Nigeria’s maritime sector. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced the inauguration, describing the expo as a platform to position Nigeria as a major destination for maritime investment, innovation and trade in Africa. Oyetola, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Fatima Mahmood, said the event would bring together policymakers, international investors, industry leaders and technology innovators to explore opportunities in the country’s marine and blue economy. According to the minister, NIMBEX is expected to help convert Nigeria’s maritime resources into investment opportunities, promote economic diversification and generate employment through partnerships and the mobilisation of capital and expertise. Nigeria has an estimated 853-kilometre coastline and more than 10,000 kilometres of navigable inland waterways across 28 states. These resources offer opportunities to expand domestic and international maritime trade, improve logistics and support economic growth. The organising committee is chaired by Husseini Shettima, Director of Marine Conservation, Innovation and Technology in the ministry. Kalthum Ibrahim, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, and Professor Busayo Fakinlede, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Marine and Blue Economy, will serve as co-chairpersons. The minister’s Special Adviser, Bolaji Akinola, is also a member of the committee and will serve as the expo’s Chief Operating Officer. Other members include representatives of key maritime institutions and agencies, including the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency, National Inland Waterways Authority and the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria. Representatives of maritime training and research institutions, coastal states, terminal operators, shipowners, freight forwarders, barge operators and other industry stakeholders are also part of the committee. The expo will showcase investment opportunities across several areas, including port development, shipping, inland waterways, logistics, offshore energy, maritime finance, fisheries, marine biotechnology, deep-sea mining, maritime security and environmental sustainability. Emerging areas such as marine renewable energy, green shipbuilding, artificial intelligence-driven logistics, subsea robotics and coastal tourism are also expected to feature. The Federal Government hopes the initiative will strengthen cooperation between public institutions, private businesses, financial organisations and technology providers while encouraging sustainable development of Nigeria’s marine resources. https://www.lagoslately.com/fg-inaugurates-nimbex-committee-to-attract-maritime-investment/

The appointment was announced on Thursday, October 22, 2026, by the institute's Director of Coordination and Liaison, Lilian Omo-Odigwe. According to the announcement, Tinubu approved the appointment following a recommendation by the incumbent DSS Director-General, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi. Bichi's appointment takes effect from October 22, 2026, for an initial four-year term in accordance with Section 4 of the National Institute for Security Studies (Establishment) Act, 2019. He succeeds former DSS chief A.A. Gadzama as chairman of the institute's governing board. The NISS said Bichi's experience in intelligence, security administration, operational leadership and institutional training would contribute to the institute's strategic direction and governance. The institute is responsible for strategic security training, research and capacity development for personnel within Nigeria's security sector and allied institutions. Bichi previously served as Director-General of the DSS from September 2018 until August 2024, when he left the position and was succeeded by Adeola Ajayi. Before joining the DSS, Bichi began his career in the Security Division of the Kano State Cabinet Office and transferred his service in 1984. The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed 1,330 electric vehicles across Nigeria’s North-East region as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs, create employment opportunities and promote environmentally friendly mobility. The vehicles comprise 1,000 electric tricycles, 300 electric taxis and 30 electric buses, which are expected to improve transportation services across the region’s six states: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe. The NEDC Adamawa State Coordinator, Khalifa Lawan, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ engagement and sensitisation workshop on electric mobility and seamless commuting held in Yola. Initiative Targets Affordable Transportation Lawan explained that the initiative was designed to make transportation more affordable while creating business opportunities, particularly for young people seeking sustainable sources of income. According to him, the commission’s intervention forms part of its broader mandate to accelerate development in the North-East through investments in infrastructure, education, skills acquisition and other essential sectors. He said Adamawa State was expected to benefit from the deployment of electric tricycles, taxis and buses, which could help improve mobility and support economic activities within communities. The programme is also expected to generate employment opportunities across the electric mobility sector, including vehicle operations, repairs, maintenance and charging services. Charging Stations Needed for Success Lawan stressed that establishing adequate charging infrastructure would be critical to the success of the project. He disclosed that the commission planned to provide at least two or three electric vehicle charging stations in each of the six states, with the possibility of expanding the facilities as demand increases. The Adamawa State Commissioner for Transport, Rumpe Anthony, also emphasised the need for sufficient charging points, raising concerns about the state's unreliable electricity supply. She said proper planning and infrastructure would be necessary to ensure that the vehicles operate efficiently and deliver the expected benefits to commuters and operators. Electric Vehicles Offer Environmental Benefits The Chief Executive Officer of Attahir Enterprise Nigeria Limited, Umar Bunu Abacha, described the initiative as an effort to develop a more efficient and sustainable transportation system. He said stakeholder engagement was important to ensure that beneficiaries and transport operators understood how the programme would work and the responsibilities involved in maintaining the vehicles. Workshop facilitator Emmanuel Mwada Wapah highlighted the potential environmental benefits of electric vehicles, including reduced exhaust emissions and noise pollution. He added that the vehicles could travel up to 300 kilometres on a full charge, while charging could take approximately one hour under specified conditions. The NEDC urged beneficiaries to maintain the vehicles properly to ensure their durability and long-term usefulness. The initiative comes amid broader efforts by the Federal Government and state governments to promote alternative-energy transportation as a means of easing the burden of rising transport costs. Its success will depend partly on the availability of reliable charging infrastructure, effective vehicle maintenance and the extent to which operational savings translate into lower fares for commuters. https://www.lagoslately.com/nedc-deploys-1330-electric-vehicles-across-north-east-to-cut-transport-costs/

Nollywood faith-based film Agbara Nla: The Return has grossed ₦354.5 million at the Nigerian box office, emerging as the highest-grossing film in the country's cinemas over the latest reported weekend. The film, distributed by Nile Entertainment, achieved the milestone following its cinema release on October 1, 2026. The distributor announced the figures on Tuesday, attributing the film's performance to a marketing campaign that appealed to longtime fans of the original production and younger audiences. The latest earnings represent a significant increase from the ₦307.2 million the film reportedly generated by October 16, highlighting its continued commercial performance in cinemas. Agbara Nla Leads Weekend Box Office According to Nile Entertainment, Agbara Nla: The Return topped the Nigerian weekend box office with ₦47.50 million. It was followed by Street Fighter, which generated ₦36.43 million, while The Other Mummy came third with ₦8.67 million. The three films collectively earned ₦92.61 million, accounting for 58.9 per cent of total weekend box office revenue. The distributor said its entire slate of films contributed 68 per cent of the weekend's cinema earnings. Nile Entertainment attributed the film's success partly to a promotional strategy built around the popularity and nostalgia associated with the original Agbara Nla. The campaign reportedly included engagement with the Mount Zion community, endorsements from church leaders and online promotional activities. The distributor also said the promotional effort generated more than ₦71 million in advance ticket sales in a single day. A Christian Classic Returns to Cinemas Agbara Nla: The Return is a remake of the 1993 Christian film produced by renowned filmmaker Mike Bamiloye under Mount Zion Film Productions. The new version was directed by his sons, Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Mike-Bamiloye, popularly known as Jay Mikee. The story centres on Muwonleru, a village controlled by Isawuru, a powerful herbalist. The narrative follows the conflict that unfolds when Christian evangelists enter the community to spread their faith, challenging the influence Isawuru holds over its residents. Mike Bamiloye reprises his role as Isawuru in the new production, which brings the familiar story to cinema audiences more than three decades after the original became popular among Christian film viewers. Film Records Strong International Opening Beyond its Nigerian performance, the film has also recorded an opening weekend gross of $120,660 in selected cinemas in the United Kingdom and Canada, according to its distributor. Nile Entertainment described the international performance as a significant achievement for a Nigerian faith-based production, reporting several milestones in the UK market. The film's reception demonstrates how an established story with a longstanding audience can attract viewers through theatrical distribution while introducing the production to a new generation. Nile Entertainment's General Manager, Nowe Segun-Ojo, said the company's performance reflected its distribution strategy, which involves tailoring promotional activities to the genres and audiences of individual films. The company began operations in August 2024 and said having three of its titles occupy the top three positions at the weekend box office was an encouraging milestone. With Agbara Nla: The Return continuing its cinema run, its latest earnings add to the growing commercial profile of faith-based films within Nigeria's film industry. https://www.lagoslately.com/agbara-nla-the-return-hits-%e2%82%a6354-5m-tops-nigerian-box-office/

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Femi Olaniyi-Ferrari, has declared his intention to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 governorship election. Olaniyi-Ferrari made the declaration during an interview in Lagos on Monday, October 19, 2026, saying his party was prepared to offer residents an alternative leadership focused on public welfare, accountability and socioeconomic development. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the candidate argued that Lagos residents deserved a government that listens to their concerns and responds to their needs. He also questioned the prolonged dominance of one political party in the state, maintaining that a change in leadership should be considered by voters. Olaniyi-Ferrari said the SDP intended to reshape the state's political landscape through policies and programmes designed to improve residents' living standards. SDP Promises People-Centred Governance The governorship candidate said his party would prioritise transparency, economic opportunities, social welfare and sustainable development if given the mandate to govern Lagos. He explained that the SDP would intensify grassroots mobilisation and engagement across the state to communicate its policy proposals and attract support ahead of the election. Olaniyi-Ferrari also urged eligible voters to examine the manifestoes and policy commitments of political parties before deciding whom to support in 2027. The candidate expressed confidence in his party's ability to mobilise supporters across Lagos and compete for the governorship seat. He further called on residents to participate actively in the electoral process, stressing the importance of credible elections and informed choices in strengthening democracy. The SDP's declaration comes as political parties and their candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, with the APC facing challenges from opposition parties seeking to secure the support of Lagos voters. The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has called on politicians and their supporters in Oyo State to avoid violence and promote peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections. The council’s President-General, Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole, made the appeal in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Kola Olomide, in Ibadan on Saturday. Ajewole’s warning followed reports of violent clashes involving political supporters in the Molete area of Ibadan, which raised concerns about public safety as political activities ahead of the elections gather momentum. He condemned the incidents, warning that political violence could threaten peace and security across the state. He urged candidates and their supporters to exercise restraint, respect opposing political views and avoid actions that could lead to the destruction of lives and property. The CCII president-general also called for campaigns centred on policies and development plans rather than intimidation or confrontation. He said political candidates should explain their manifestoes and how they intend to address the needs of residents. Ajewole further urged political leaders to caution their supporters against inflammatory statements and actions capable of heightening tensions during the election period. He stressed that political ambitions should not come at the expense of public safety, adding that maintaining peace in Ibadan and the wider Oyo State was a collective responsibility. The council also appealed to security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that anyone found responsible for political violence is dealt with in accordance with the law. The call followed an attack on supporters of Accord Party governorship candidate Oriyomi Hamzat during a procession in the Molete area of Ibadan South-West Local Government Area on Wednesday. The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH, stating that Hamzat’s supporters had been ambushed during what was described as a peaceful procession. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced plans to install surveillance cameras at strategic locations across Lagos State as part of efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and strengthen environmental law enforcement. The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed the initiative during an interview on Lagos Talks 91.3 FM on Monday, October 12, 2026. According to him, the planned deployment will complement an existing partnership with the Lagos State Command Centre to monitor environmental violations and identify individuals involved in illegal dumping. Gbadegesin explained that the cameras would strengthen surveillance, discourage improper waste disposal and support the identification of offenders for appropriate sanctions under the law. LAWMA to Strengthen Waste Collection The LAWMA chief stressed that improving waste collection infrastructure alone would not guarantee a cleaner environment, noting that residents must also adopt responsible waste disposal habits. He said the authority was combining technology, enforcement and public awareness campaigns to address persistent environmental sanitation challenges across the state. Gbadegesin also disclosed that the arrival of 150 new waste trucks would improve waste collection and evacuation services in Lagos. He added that LAWMA had introduced house-to-house waste collection interventions to address accumulated refuse following the disengagement of underperforming Private Sector Participants responsible for waste collection in some areas. Residents Warned Against Illegal Dumping The authority urged residents to patronise approved waste collection operators, package their refuse properly and report cases of indiscriminate dumping. Gbadegesin emphasised that government investments in waste management equipment and infrastructure must be supported by public cooperation to achieve lasting improvements in environmental sanitation. The authority is also pursuing improvements to waste transfer stations, material recovery facilities and recycling infrastructure as part of broader efforts to improve waste handling across Lagos. LAWMA has further highlighted the potential of converting organic waste into useful energy, including electricity, through proposed waste-to-energy initiatives. The planned surveillance camera deployment is expected to strengthen the authority's monitoring and enforcement capacity as Lagos intensifies efforts to maintain cleaner communities and discourage environmental violations. https://www.lagoslately.com/lawma-to-install-cctv-cameras-across-lagos-to-fight-illegal-dumping/

The Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out the eight-count criminal charge against Adeniyi Adeyemi, who is accused of posing as the Director-General of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), following legal issues identified in the prosecution’s case. Justice Mohammed Umar struck out the charges on Monday, October 12, 2026, after the Federal Government applied to discontinue the case before the court and pursue fresh charges at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, told the court that a review by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice had revealed jurisdictional problems with the original charges filed by the Inspector-General of Police. According to the prosecution, the allegations relating to documents allegedly forged by Adeyemi fell within the jurisdiction of the FCT High Court rather than the Federal High Court, where the case was initially instituted. Oyedepo therefore asked the court to strike out the existing charges, explaining that fresh charges had already been filed before the FCT High Court and that the government intended to proceed with a new arraignment. Adeyemi’s counsel, Ibrahim Angulu, SAN, did not oppose the application, following which Justice Umar granted the request. Adeyemi had been arraigned on September 30, 2026, on eight counts bordering on alleged conspiracy and forgery. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges. The prosecution alleges that he presented himself as the head of a government agency that was neither established nor authorised by the Federal Government. The allegations also involve purported official documents used in connection with the agency’s activities. Adeyemi has previously maintained that the organisation was legitimate and denied wrongdoing. The allegations have not been established by a court. Following his earlier arraignment, he was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending further proceedings. The fresh charges are expected to be heard by the FCT High Court. The striking out of the charges at the Federal High Court does not amount to an acquittal on the allegations, as the Federal Government has indicated its intention to continue the prosecution through the new case. https://www.lagoslately.com/court-strikes-out-charges-against-alleged-fake-dg-adeniyi-adeyemi/

The Kano State Police Command has arrested 10 suspected members of an interstate vehicle theft syndicate and recovered 12 stolen vehicles during coordinated operations across Kano and neighbouring states. The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, disclosed the development on September 16, 2026, during a press briefing at the Tarauni Area Command in Kano. According to the commissioner, the operation began on September 7 when operatives of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), acting on intelligence, arrested five suspects in Adamawa State and recovered a white Mercedes-Benz GLK 350. Further investigations led to the recovery of 10 additional vehicles from different locations across Kano and neighbouring states. Five more suspects were subsequently arrested on September 12 at Kwankwasiya City Quarters in Tarauni, Kano, bringing the total number of suspects to 10. Police said the syndicate allegedly stole vehicles and moved them across state boundaries for resale. The suspects reportedly confessed to involvement in vehicle thefts in Kano, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe and other states, although the allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. Bakori expressed concern that 11 of the 12 recovered vehicles were unregistered, a situation he said made it difficult for investigators to establish their ownership. He urged motorists to register their vehicles properly and avoid using concealed or improperly displayed number plates, warning that such practices could make it harder to trace vehicles linked to criminal activities. The police commissioner also commended members of the public and neighbouring police commands for providing information and supporting the operations. He said investigations were continuing to identify other suspected members of the syndicate and recover additional stolen vehicles. The suspects are expected to be charged in court after the conclusion of investigations. Owners seeking to identify and reclaim recovered vehicles were advised to contact the Kano State Police Command with valid proof of ownership. https://www.lagoslately.com/kano-police-arrest-10-suspects-recover-12-stolen-vehicles/

Italy’s Chamber of Deputies has given final approval to a major overhaul of the country’s electoral system, clearing the way for new voting rules ahead of next year’s general election. The legislation, backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government, was approved in a secret ballot by 227 votes to 164 on Thursday, October 8. The reform replaces Italy’s existing mixed electoral system with a fully proportional representation system. Under the new arrangement, a coalition securing more than 42 per cent of the vote would receive bonus seats intended to give it a working parliamentary majority. The bonus would provide an additional 70 seats in the 400-member Chamber of Deputies and 35 seats in the 200-member Senate, although limits have been placed on the maximum number of seats a coalition can obtain through the system. The reform also requires political parties and coalitions to identify their candidate for prime minister before the election. However, Italy’s constitution continues to give the president the formal authority to appoint the prime minister. Meloni and her governing coalition have argued that the changes are designed to produce clearer election outcomes and improve government stability. Opposition parties, however, have strongly criticised the legislation, arguing that the new rules could restrict voter choice and unfairly benefit the governing coalition. The opposition has also indicated that it intends to challenge aspects of the reform before Italy’s Constitutional Court once the law takes effect. The final vote concludes months of debate and disagreements within both the governing coalition and opposition. The new electoral framework is expected to play an important role in Italy’s next general election, which is due in 2027. https://www.lagoslately.com/italy-parliament-approves-new-electoral-law-ahead-of-2027-election/

The Nigerian naira has continued its recent positive run against the British pound, with the currency pair trading around N1,767 to £1 in the official foreign exchange market. The movement comes amid recent improvements in Nigeria’s foreign exchange liquidity and a relatively stable naira following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s monetary policy adjustment. Data from the CBN-linked exchange-rate series showed the pound at about N1,767.14 per £1 on October 6, compared with N1,759.83 recorded the previous day. Despite the short-term fluctuations, the naira has strengthened significantly against sterling compared with earlier in the year, when the pound traded above the N1,900 level. Market conditions have been supported by stronger foreign-exchange buffers and improved inflows, particularly from the oil and gas sector. These factors have helped improve liquidity and reduce pressure on the naira. The CBN also recently reduced its Monetary Policy Rate to 23 per cent, a move that lowered the yield advantage previously enjoyed by naira-denominated assets. Meanwhile, broader international currency movements have continued to influence the pound. Recent market data showed GBP/NGN trading around the N1,757–N1,758 range on October 8. Analysts will continue to monitor foreign-exchange liquidity, crude oil inflows, monetary policy and global movements in the pound as key factors that could determine the naira’s direction in the coming sessions. https://www.lagoslately.com/naira-extends-gains-against-pound-as-sterling-trades-at-n1767/

France to Release 10 Million Barrels of Diesel to Cut Pump Prices France is set to release 10 million barrels of diesel from its strategic reserves in a bid to ease pressure on consumers facing high fuel prices. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced the measure on Wednesday, October 7, saying the diesel would be made available to fuel distributors in France for three months. According to Lecornu, the diesel was purchased before the recent surge in prices and will be sold to distributors at cost price. The French government expects the move to reduce pump prices by between 12 and 18 euro cents per litre, equivalent to roughly $0.13 to $0.20 per litre. Lecornu said the implementation would require a government decree and that he would meet fuel distributors in the coming days to discuss how the measure would be carried out. The decision comes amid tight diesel supplies and rising energy prices linked to disruptions in international energy markets, including the ongoing conflicts affecting oil and refined-product supplies. The release is also part of a broader effort by G7 countries to mobilise strategic fuel reserves. The group recently agreed to make substantial volumes of oil and refined products available to the market, with diesel releases prioritised because of current supply pressures. However, energy analysts have warned that releasing strategic reserves can provide only temporary relief, as the stocks will eventually need to be replenished if supply problems persist. https://www.lagoslately.com/france-to-release-10-million-barrels-of-diesel-to-reduce-fuel-prices/

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has urged the Federal Government to sustain the momentum of ongoing economic reforms, warning that the country cannot afford to lose the gains achieved so far. The group said Nigeria must now move beyond economic stabilisation and ensure that reforms translate into productive investment, job creation and improved living standards for citizens. The NESG made the call as preparations continue for the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit, scheduled to hold in Abuja from October 26 to 27, 2026. The summit, themed “Growth That Works: Delivering Jobs, Productivity and Shared Prosperity,” is expected to bring together government officials, business leaders, development partners and other stakeholders to discuss ways of converting economic reforms into measurable outcomes. According to the NESG, reforms such as exchange-rate unification, the removal of fuel subsidies and banking-sector recapitalisation have begun reshaping Nigeria’s economic landscape and creating a foundation for longer-term stability. However, the organisation stressed that stabilisation alone would not be sufficient if the benefits did not reach businesses, workers and households. It said the next phase should focus on increasing productivity, attracting investment, strengthening human capital, creating jobs and improving the business environment. The group also identified infrastructure, regulatory efficiency and access to investment capital as important areas that require sustained attention if Nigeria is to achieve stronger economic growth. The upcoming summit will examine these issues under five broad areas: building a job-rich economy, increasing productivity and industrialisation, attracting investment and expanding social protection, strengthening security for economic activity, and spreading growth across states and communities. The NESG said the objective is to help build a stronger national consensus around moving Nigeria from a period of economic stabilisation towards investment-, productivity- and employment-driven growth. The organisation also emphasised the need for effective implementation, noting that the success of reforms should ultimately be measured by their impact on productivity, employment and shared prosperity. The 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit will hold at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, with more than 2,000 delegates and over 100 speakers expected to participate. https://www.lagoslately.com/nigeria-cannot-afford-to-waste-reform-momentum-nesg-warns/

The Federal Government has released funds covering eight months of salary arrears owed members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), following the union’s threat to embark on an indefinite strike. The payment came less than 48 hours after SSANU issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government to implement outstanding aspects of the 2026 Federal Government-SSANU agreement. SSANU had warned that failure to address its demands within the stipulated period could lead to a “total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action” across the country. The union made the demands in a communiqué issued after its 56th National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Among the issues raised was the payment of outstanding arrears under the Consolidated University Teaching and Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTTA), dating back to January 1, 2026. SSANU had also demanded the payment of two months' salaries withheld during its 2022 industrial action, as well as one-year arrears resulting from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases. Following the ultimatum, the Federal Government released funds covering eight months of the outstanding salary arrears. Confirming the development, SSANU President Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim said members would begin receiving alerts for the payments. Ibrahim credited Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, with intervening in the matter and facilitating the release of the funds. According to him, the minister had contacted the union before the ultimatum was issued and confirmed that the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation were processing the payment. The SSANU president described the development as evidence that constructive engagement between the government and university-based unions could produce results when followed by prompt action. Outstanding Issues Remain Despite welcoming the release, SSANU said the government's latest action had not completely resolved its outstanding demands. The union maintained that two months' salaries withheld during the 2022 strike and one-year arrears arising from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases were still unpaid. SSANU therefore urged the Federal Government to settle the remaining obligations without further delay. The union also called on state governments and governing councils of state-owned universities to ensure full implementation of the agreement, warning that delays or selective compliance could create further tension within the university system. SSANU directed its members to liaise with their respective university managements to ensure that the released funds were properly paid and asked workers to report any discrepancies in their payments. The union said it would continue to pursue its members' welfare through lawful and constitutional means while maintaining engagement with the Federal Government. https://www.lagoslately.com/fg-releases-8-months-salary-arrears-after-ssanu-strike-threat/
