THE Congress for Progressive Change on Monday called for the trial of former President Olusegun Obasanjo for genocide over the 1999 invasion of Odi community in Bayelsa State. Spokesman for the CPC, Rotimi Fashakin, said, sequel to the court description of the 1999 attack on Odi by Nigerian soldiers as genocide, Obasanjo should be arrested and tried before the International Criminal Court. The CPC catalogued two instances of mistreatment of two communities in the country and concluded that Obasanjo should be tried for the Odi massacre because he “harboured sadistic and malevolent intent” in dealing with the two communities. A Federal High Court presided over by Justice Lambo Akanbi on February 19, 2013 had ordered the Federal Government to pay N37.6 bn as compensation to the people of Odi over the invasion of their community by armed soldiers during the Obasanjo administration. However the CPC said the payment of compensation as ordered by the court was inadequate adding that the ex-President should be tried for genocide. Soldiers on the order of the Obasanjo government invaded Odi on November 20, 1999 and destroyed the community over the killing of 10 policemen by a gang involved in the Niger Delta unrest of the period. The party’s statement reads, “On 20th November, 1999, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, then President of Nigeria, authorised the invasion and subsequent destruction of Odi community in Bayelsa State by the soldiers of the Nigerian Army. “After more than 12 years of delayed justice, the Nigerian High Court Judge, Justice Lambo Akanbi, had described the invasion as genocidal, reckless, brutish and gross violation of the rights of the victims to life and ownership of property. “In addition, the learned Judge ordered the Federal Government of Nigeria to pay N37.6bn as compensation to the victims. “In 2001, the same PDP-led regime of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, ordered the invasion of Zaki-Biam, a community in Benue State, by soldiers with the same malevolent intent as the Odi invasion. “Indeed, in a decided case in July 2007, the Federal Government was ordered to pay N4.8 bn as compensation to the victims. “Undoubtedly, it is clear from these two decided cases that Obasanjo harboured sadistic and malevolent intent in dealing with the two Nigerian communities. ADVERTISEMENT “In the judgment on the class suit No.FHC/PH/CP/11/2000 on the Odi invasion, Justice Lambo Akanbi ruled that the attack on the people of Odi was genocidal, reckless, brutish and a gross violation of the rights of the victims to life and ownership of property. “In Article 5(1a) of the statute of the International Criminal Court, genocide is a crime under the jurisdictional purview of the Court.” Fashakin went further to explain that Article 6 (a-c) of the same statute explains that “For the purpose of this Statute, ‘genocide’ means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such (a) killing members of the group; (b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group.” He said that at the time of these infractions, the Nigerian State was not in a state of war with these communities and that the action typified the impunity and excessive show of executive recklessness that he alleged the PDP-led regimes had unleashed on the nation in 13 years. Fashakin said his party was of the opinion that no amount of monetary compensation could fully assuage the sense of colossal loss of these communities, whose rights to life, he said, were indecently trampled upon by the Obasanjo regime. He said, “It is equally our belief that, with the establishment of the intent and content of the invasion as genocidal, the course of Justice is best served if the head of the government at the material time, that is, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is formally arraigned before the International Criminal Court for the crime of genocide. “The wider implication of the arraignment shall be the institution of constitutional order and decency among the ruling elite so that the inalienable rights of the people to personal liberty and justice shall remain sacrosanct.” Obasanjo was not available for reaction on Monday. Efforts to reach the ex-President through his Chief of Staff, Victor Durodola, were not fruitful. At the first contact, Durodola told one of our correspondents on the phone to call back, promising to reach Obasanjo to react. When our correspondent called Durodola again at 10:20pm, he said, “Baba is at home but he has not responded to my text to him on the subject. May be he has slept but I am sure he will respond by the time he sees the text.” Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/obasanjo-should-face-trial-for-odi-massacre-cpc/ |

Amira Kodcia Ayeb, a 21-year-old Tunisian native living in Los Angeles, California was arrested late Wednesday after multi-talented American recording artist, dancer, and actor Chris Brown and his crew found her naked on his bed at his rented California mansion. Brown came home two days later after his birthday celebration in Las Vegas, to find Ayeb naked on his bed. He immediately alerted the Lost Hills Sheriff Department and Ayeb was taken into custody shortly after. The singer posted a photo of Ayeb on Instagram to vent about the ordeal. “I get home and find this crazy individual in my house,” Brown wrote on Instagram. “She had broken the hinges off the doors. She found time to cook her several meAls (sic). She Wrote (sic) ‘I love you’ on the walls,” Brown said. “She threw out my daughters clothing as well as my dogs stuff,” Brown wrote. “Then had all these crazy voodoo things around my crib.” Just four days prior, Ayeb posted a message online revealing she was in Malibu, California "searching for her home," also claiming that her last name was ‘Brown.’ “I will never have to fight because God fights for me. This is the real me I lost my phone my computer I can't not find my sounds in my flash drive,” Ayeb said. “My name is Amira Kodcia Ayeb Brown, I am from Tunisia and I live in Los Angeles California. If you will like to know more listen to my songs.” According to TMZ reports, Ayeb boarded a bus last week and claimed she was going to see Brown. She then broke into the R&B singer’s pad, cooked herself several meals, writing ‘I love you’ on the countertops. She also sprayed ‘Mrs. Brown’ and ‘I love you’ on interior walls and his cars. In addition, she got rid of Brown’s dog and 10-month-old daughter Royalty Brown’s belongings after vandalizing her crib. According to her friend, Ayeb is an aspiring singer who is a student at the University of Houston, and dreams of becoming Chris Brown’s wife. However, the school confirmed she is currently not enrolled as a student. Ayeb is currently being held on a $50,000 bail. An official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Adeogun Olajide, and a civilian, Adams Michael, were on Thursday arraigned for allegedly importing 2. 692 kilogrammes of cocaine. The accused persons were docked at a Federal High Court in Lagos, on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and importation of narcotic drugs. The accused persons denied committing the offence. The prosecutor, Mr Augustine Nwagu, also an NDLEA official, told the court that the accused persons committed the alleged offences between January and March 8. He said that the alleged offences were committed at the International Mail Processing Centre of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. According to the prosecutor, the narcotic drugs were brought into Nigeria at different times and in varying quantities. “The accused had on Feb. 24 imported 2.092 kilogrammes of cocaine. “They also imported 600 kilogrammes of this same substance on or before March 8 without lawful authority.’’ He said the accused by their alleged act had contravened Sections 11 (a) (b) and 14 (b) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004. The prosecutor urged the court to remand the accused in the NDLEA’s remand facility pending the time investigation would be concluded. But counsel to the accused, Mr Benson Ndakara, opposed the oral bail application and urged the court to admit his clients to bail. He told the court that the accused had been in detention since March and that it would be appropriate and fair to release them on bail. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused could be sentenced to life imprisonment if convicted of the charges. Justice Saliu Saidu, however, ordered that the accused should be remanded at the NDLEA facility for seven days. “But if the NDLEA fails to conclude its investigation within seven days, I will entertain the bail applications of the accused,’’ Saidu further ordered. The case was adjourned till May 14. (NAN) Source: http://leadership.ng/news/431659/ndlea-official-civilian-docked-for-allegedly-importing-cocaine |

Tony Blair is backing Chuka Umunna to be the next Labour leader, the former prime minister's friends have revealed, in an intervention that will set the battle for succession alight. Several Labour frontbenchers are preparing their leadership campaigns in the event that Ed Miliband fails to secure victory next May. But being anointed by the party's most successful leader could be either a blessing or a curse for Mr Umunna, the shadow Business Secretary, given how far Mr Blair's popularity in the wider Labour movement has fallen. The MP for Streatham has repeatedly refused to set out his leadership ambitions and is actively loyal to Mr Miliband. But he speaks regularly to Mr Blair and other New Labour veterans, including Lord Mandelson, Tessa Jowell and Lord Adonis. The former PM sees Mr Umunna as a "natural heir" to his New Labour legacy, said a friend. Since being elevated to the Shadow Cabinet, Mr Umunna has stuck to his business brief, but in recent weeks has been more outspoken on immigration in the face of the Ukip surge. His strident defence of the benefits of immigration to the UK has drawn further admiration from Mr Blair who is in total agreement, said a source. Writing in The New York Times last week, Mr Blair took a thinly veiled swipe at Mr Miliband, saying that politicians needed to have jobs in the "real world" before Parliament. Mr Miliband's former job was as a special adviser to Gordon Brown, while Mr Umunna was in law before being elected in 2010. The shadow Business Secretary is frequently labelled the "British Obama" – most recently by Le Monde in a glowing profile earlier this year. But when asked in an interview for The Independent on Sunday in September whether he wanted to be leader of the party, Mr Umunna said he just wanted to serve in Mr Miliband's cabinet. A friend of Mr Umunna said last night: "Chuka was one of the first MPs to back Ed Miliband's leadership campaign in 2010 and is fully focused on Labour winning next year and putting Ed into No 10. His feet are firmly on the ground and he doesn't get distracted by stories like this. He has met Tony Blair before, but so have many Labour MPs." A recent Survation poll, which showed video footage of possible Labour leadership candidates to voters, put Mr Umunna significantly ahead of his potential rivals, including Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham. The changes to Labour leadership rules has weakened the power of the union vote, making it easier for a Blairite candidate to seize the crown.
