The presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democracy during the 1999 elections, Chief Olu Falae, has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration from 1999 to 2007 took corruption to an unprecedented level.

Falae, who is the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, said this during an interview with our correspondent at the official presentation of the party’s constitution and manifesto in Lagos on Thursday.

When asked what he felt about Obasanjo’s criticism of the

administration as regards corruption, Falae said corruption under Obasanjo was worse than all of his predecessors.

Falae, who lost to Obasanjo in the 1999 election, however, said he could not distinguish between corruption under Jonathan and corruption under Obasanjo.

He said, “Corruption must die for Nigeria to live, the two cannot coexist. And it was Obasanjo’s regime that reintroduced corruption in Nigeria. Yes, he motivated the passing of the anti-corruption law; he set up anti-corruption agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission but his regime showed the highest degree of corruption since independence.

“It was during his time that Ghana-must-go bags of money were shared on the floor of the National Assembly during the third term agenda debacle. It was during his time that public officers were accused of stealing billions of naira.

“So, there must have been something in his regime that encouraged corruption on that scale. However, he might now be repentant but it was during his regime that corruption was reintroduced on a mega scale.”

Also speaking at the event, Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, said only the SDP could save Nigeria from collapse.

Adebanjo said the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party lacked ideology, adding that Nigerians would shun them at the polls next year.

UPI reports: Christian Poincheval, 65, of Gesvres, said his Lutin Malin or Crafty Imp line of pills can make a customer's bodily gases smell like chocolate, roses or violets. Poincheval developed the chocolate scent specially for Christmas. The website selling the products bill the pills as "The Father Christmas fart pill that gives your farts the scent of chocolate." "It's a nice present for the festive season," Poincheval told The Local. "There will be a real need for these pills over Christmas." Poincheval said the invention was inspired by an uncomfortably flatulent dinner with friends about six years ago. "We had just come back from Switzerland and we were eating a lot with our friends and the smell from the flatulence was really terrible. We couldn't breathe so me and a friend decided something had to be done," Poincheval said. The pills are billed as "100 percent natural" and include fennel, seaweed and blueberries among their ingredients.

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Oluwole Soyinka, today, opened up on hishealth status, saying he was diagnosed of cancer last December.

But an expert and Founder of African Cancer Centre, Lagos, Prof. Olu Williams, quickly assured Soyinkathat he would “not die of cancer.”

Williams, who revealed that Soyinkahad the disease because of his old age, said the playwright will only “die with the ailment.”

Soyinka, who revealed his cancer status at a press conference at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State, said he had decided to open up so as to create awarenessabout cancer disease and to help people take measures to prevent it or seek prompt medical attention for cure.

The Nobel Laureate said he survived the silent killer disease because of early detection, treatment and proper dieting, addingthat it has also dawned on him that the family has ahistory of cancer ailment.

He noted that his initial reaction when it dawned on that he has cancer was to see it asone of those challengesand nuisance that should be dealt with, adding that atime he considered it “an unwanted squatter in his body and had to get rid of it whether it is a slow growing one or malignant.”

Although, “Kongi”, who showed a crest to attest to his surviving the disease, did not reveal to reporters the nature of the cancer he was treated for, his son, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, who isalso the Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, later told The Nation his father was treated for “prostate cancer.”
