Ivvie , no problem you know your stuff as well. Are you an automotive engineer/designer ?, where are you based ? |
Car Talk / Re: My Car Is Overheating by Digiman(m): 8:17pm On Jul 23, 2007 |
When the head gasket is no longer sealing as it is supposed to you may get less compression in your cylinders, you get oil leaking into your water path ways which results in both mixing giving you a brownish / milky substance, you can also confirm this by checking your oil filler cap, you'll see a milkish deposit on it. When you have a a leaking gasket you will be down on power and it will be noticeable BEFORE the engine reaches operating temp. By "heat sink" I suspect you meant "heat soak", that is mostly true with turbo charged cars, the reason why they heat up so quickly is because the exhaust gases are used to keep the turbo spinning, the turbo in turn forces cool air into the engine via the intake manifold . Because it is so hot in the engine bay of a turbo charged car there is a tendency for the air being drawn into the engine to be warmer thus producing less power when combustion occours plus you'll get less air in to the combustion chambers if its warm pre combustion, to get round this turbocharged cars have intercoolers which lower the temp of the incoming air but then their proximity to heat sources such as exhaust manifold e.t.c in the engine bay lends them to heat soak. There are ways of getting round thisbut I wil not be discussing them here. I know all this becasue I have owned and done a lot of work on turbo charged cars as a hobby for the last 10 years. Ivvie: |

If your engine is over heating check the following: 1. Coolong fan, if belt driven check the belt, if its intact check for slack, if its too slack it will not turn efficiently. If its electric does it come on when the it is supposed to ?, if not the electrics need to be checked i.e. fuses and relays also get the radiator thermostat switch checked, its a switch which is screwed in to the radiator, its poupose is to turn on the elctric fan when the temperature of the water in the radiator reaches a certain point typically between 85-98 degree centigrade. In response to some of the answers other have given I need to clarify a few of them 1. Blown head gasket - A sure sign of a blown head gasket is the color of your coolant, when you open the expansion tank you'll see a mixture of oil and water in most cases also you'll notice that the car does not pull very well, it will lack power and also your engine will reach hogh temperatures very quickly 5-10 minutes. You can also get a compression test done, this will surely tell you if your gasket is blown. 2. Removing the thermostat can certainly help , its purpose is to enabe the engine to reach optimal operating temperature about 80 degrees centigrate or so, at this point it opens fully to allwo coolant to flow to the radiator to be cooled down. In Nigera where the ambient temperature can be as high as 28 degrees centigrade in the morning plus the fact that you are bound to get stuck in traffic or dirve slowly for some miles due to the state of the roads, removing the themostat will do no harm, worst state senario is you'll have high fuel consumption if the engine runs cold for a few miles. I hve run cars without thermostats in the Uk and its never caused engine failure. Regarding antifreez or coolant - its important to use coolant because they have a special formula which prevents the mixture from boling at the normal boiling point of water which is 100 degrees centigrade, and also they often have rust inhibitors which reduce rust. If you put water on its own basically the water will start to boil more quickly also water on its own promotes rust. If possible use a mixture of summer coolant and distilled water in a 50-50 mixture. |

E be Naija, my advice to you is to go for fairly new brand names HP, Compaq, Dell, Toishiba. Under no circumstances should you go for scrap, they are useless and dangerous to the enviroment in fact these countries that most of these computers and parts are being imported from consider them to be rubbish so why sholud Africa become a dumping ground for such dangerous waste ? Please follow these links and read the articles: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/24/technology/24junk.html?ex=1287806400&en=59b8642bb6f7fc16&ei=5088 http://www.dancewithshadows.com/computer_recycle.asp The nigerian Goverment needs to do something fast before we find ourselves sitting on a toxic time bomb. O!G! I got your email. I was away for a few days hence the delay in replying. I will reply here for the nbenefit of other interested parties as well. First I congratulate you on taking the first step. Regards the sponsorship letter, its basically a letter requesting tarining sponsorship from the organisation, you will have to formally request it, and also state why you want/need sponsor ship, also use it as an opportunity to show that you are serious about a becaoming a pilot, what you have done so far (knowledge / skills) and what your aspirations are if sucessful. Below are a few links I would like you to visit: http://www.jetcareers.com/content/view/28/50/ http://www.pprune.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-65343.html http://www.easyjet.com/EN/Jobs/Pilot/pilotrecruitment_cadetsponsorshipscheme.html http://www.futureairlinepilot.com/tips.html This link has a sample applicaton (on page 4) of course you will made to amend it to suit you requiremens and also beef it up: http://www.liv.ac.uk/studentsupport/ist/pdfs/trust_charities2004.pdf Do you have any access to any aviation books / magazines, it will help if you can read up on some of the basic stuff like the PPL course modules, there are some web site which actually have the course contents, better still if you can get your hands on a flight simulator as well. Armed wityh this knowledge you'll look good at an interview. |

Career / Re: How To Become A Pilot? by Digiman(m): 6:24pm On May 14, 2007 |
O!G!: The Standard Pilot course (SP) (PPL, CPL, IR, ME), does not not include ATPL, you can do your ATPL after a few years if you do not have the money to do it straight after you obtain your CPL. The CPL is enough to get you into the flight deck as a first officer/co-pilot. I listed the courses individually because it appears the Aviation college allows the courses do be done individually, this may be to your advantage especially if you do not have the funds to go for the packaged ab-initio courses. My advice will be do to the PPL, IR, ME and hopefuly before your CPL you will find and airline to sponsor you, if you are still struggling to find sponsorship i'd suggest try getting a job part time maybe working at the college or an airfield and save up for your CPL and also do an Instructors course, once qualified as a Flight instructor you may be able to get a job with the college or elsewhere this will not only enable you to start earning money it will also enable you to build up your flying hours which will come in handy when to apply for a job as an airline pilot. |
Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Are High Megapixel Cameras Really Better? by Digiman(m): 8:47pm On May 10, 2007 |
Believe me a good quality 8 mp camera will be miles ahead from a 5 mp one, apart from the extra functions you get the images will be much clearer, you may not notice it untill you blow up your images to say A3 size or larger. Always go for a camera with an optical zoom if you want reasonably good photographs. If you can afford it go for a Digital SLR Canon & Nikon make some very good ones. |
Crime / Re: Harassed By Nigerian Policemen by Digiman(m): 10:09pm On May 08, 2007 |
It's nice to read about peoples encounters with nigerian Police, its even nicer hearing how people stand up to them, those guys are theiving bastards. You guys are lucky not to have been shot at by those idiots during those encounters, I had two occasions when the those idiots could have taken my life, these happened in the 80's, the first one happened somewhere around Ikoyi we got stopped at a road block manned by a couple of policemen, I don't remember what transpired but I remember flaring up because the policeman was being stupid, suddely he corked his gun and fired on shot in my direction at close range fortunately the nozzle was pointing downwards at an angle so all I got was bit of loose gravel which was disturbed by the bullet, I suspect he was expecting us to run away when he started coking the gun so he could have a excuse to murder us, the idiot also reeked of alcohol. On the second occasion we were near MMIA on the road leading to the domestic airport when we got stopped at a road block, again silly questions were being asked and I flared up, next thing I know guns were cocked ,it took the intervention by my Dad and someone else to ease the situation they just asked us to go. Other than those two occasions I have never had to deal with Nigerian Policemen because Soja no get bizness with police, just flash your ID card or have your NA sticker on your car and they dare not dream of bothering you. I hear that these days they don't have bullets so that may explain why the incidents of accidental discharge are a thing of the past. |

O!G!: Sorry that was a typo, Flight training in the US of A is not free. If you want free training, the Nigerian Airforce is your only choice but then there is no guarantee that you will be eventually selected for pilot training after your basic military training and even if you did you might end up flying helcopters rather than air planes which is also split into jet or turbo prop planes. For flight training in the US you WILL need to have the funds for the course plus your living expenses since its, most likely the flight school would only accept you on the basis that you enrol for an "ab-inito" course since you are not resident in the US. This course takes you from PPL to ATPL hence the reason why its so expensive. In order to save you the hassle of having to find the full funds for your course up front you could look for a school that will allow you to do each training course bit by bit i.e. Private Pilots - PPL then Instrument rating - IR, then Commercial Pilots License - CPL and Flight Instructor rating (FIR), you might find one that will allow you to do each course on a pay as you go basis, once you get your CPL and your Flight instructor rating you can work as a flight instructor to build up your hours while at the same time save money towards your Multi engine rating and ATPL, you will still have to find the initial funds to start the basic courses. Now looking at the NCAT web site it looks like you can do the courses bit by bit as I listed it the paragraph above see list and prices http://www.ncatz-ng.org/Fees.htm 7, 8 , 9, 10 & 12 is what you want , you will have to contact them and confirm. Once you are in you can look around for an outfit willing to sponsor you through the rest of the course, you will have to be pro active in this area, see these links for examples http://www.virginnigeria.com/en/ng/press/pr2007-3-13.html http://www.arikair.com/ARIKAIR/racine_site/news.asp Contact airline operators in Nigeria to seek sponsorship. Finally if you still cannot raise funds to train to a professional level you could join a flying club and get your PPL, NCAT have a flying club - http://www.ncatz-ng.org/Other%20services.htm Remember where there is a will there is a way ! I hope this makes it a lot clearer. |

If you do not have the funds to sponsor yourself your best bet is the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), once you get in try to get an airline to sponsor you throught the course. The second option is to go through an airline, Virgin Nigeria for instance, they were recruiting sometime last year but be warned competition is stiff because you will be competing with people who are already comercial pilots with minimum flying hours. Another option is to join the Nigerian Airforce but you'll have to gain admission to NDA, after a couple of years you'll begin you flight training thats if you make the standards to become a military pilot, believe me its not for the faint hearted, i've seen guys quit after a week at NDA (wimps !). Be warned though military aviation is very different from civil aviation so when you quit the airforce you'll have to retrain for civil flying but your previously gained skills and knowledge will not be wasted. If you do have the money just apply to a flight training school in the US. You'ss start with attaining your private pilots license, then instrument rating & multi engine rating, i'd also advise you to get you flight instructor rating so you can build up your hours while at the same time earning some money, next go for your comercial pilots license and finally Airline Transport Pilots license but it does not stop there, you also need to be type rated in the types of aircraft you'll be flying but don't worry whichever ailine employs you after your taining will usually cover the cost. Have you wondered how much they have contributed to the coun Orikinla:try's economy ? 1. If they were in Naija they would be competing for the few jobs available 2. They send or bring money home, surely that must have some positive impact on the ecomony if they build houses or start busniesses they create employment in the process 3. They send / give relatives at home money, this may not have a massive impact but will still alleviate their suffering to some extent - what support does the Nigerian government give to its citizens ? As far as building the nation is concerned there must first be a revolution, get rid of the Military men who think ruling Nigeria is their birth right, purge the nation of the vermin that inhabit every fabric of its society. Only then can you think of rebuilding the nation. 1 Like |
