Education / Why Onions Make You Cry by Dioxidane: 9:12pm On Jun 13, 2015
For those of us who cook, most times we experience teary eyes when we cut an onion bulb. Have you ever wondered why this is so?

Well, when an onion bulb is cut, it's cells are broken, thereby releasing their contents. Amino acids and sulfoxides form sulphenic acids. Enzymes that were kept separate in different layers now freely mix with the sulphenic acid to produce PROPANETHIOL S - OXIDE, a volatile sulphur compound that wafts upwards towards your eyes when the onion bulb is cut. The gas reacts with the water in your tears to form sulphuric acid.

And as usual, sulphuric acid burns, which causes more tears
to wash the irritation away. This same principle is applied in the production of tear gas.

This phenomenon can be prevented by freezing the onions before cutting. It slows down the reaction and changes the chemistry of the onions. It can also be prevented by cutting the onions under water.

Henceforth, onions shouldn't make you cry...

Hope my questions is nt getting 2 much, how do you know the normal amount for the position

If you have a contact in the company, they should be able to give you the information. If you don't, then go online. You would get the salary range corresponding to your job title...

Always tell them your worth. Very important.

Like I said, that was what I said at the interview I went for... It's a major coy, and the interviewer asked like he didn't mean it so I told him that. Besides I was already told that the salary for each section was fixed...

Kid, right? No offense taken...

Obviously you are currently job hunting, so am I. If you are to widen your horizon, answer these questions. If you don't know the answers, you can always do research.

1. How many industries or firms in line with your field exists in Nigeria?

2. How many of them do you know their locations?

3. How many of them advertise their vacancies online?

I'm sorry to say this, but just because someone mentioned online that he/she went for an interview doesn't mean you ask openly for the link or location of the company. If you were the one, I'm sure you wouldn't do that either...

Shey you know this attempt to convince us is even more unconvincing than your story. Had it really happened, the culprits would have been politely led out of the room and not ordered to 'get out'.

Ok... You are happy now?

Would have bought your story OP, but when you got to the part where the security men told the cheats to 'get out' and even manhandled one of the guys, I realised it's 'tale by sunlight'. No well-structured organisation would act in such an abusive manner, no matter the situation.

I'm not trying to convince you it happened. You are an adult, and you have the right to believe or not to believe anything you are told. That being the case, trying imagining an exam hall in a university where someone/group of persons who cheat is/are caught. You understand the kind of chaos it would cause, right? Try applying it in this situation. The security operatives were there to quell the tension and they did... No organization, well structured or not, would allow chaos in it's premises no matter the level of force they would have to use. This is what I experienced. I don't know about you...
