An undergraduate, identified as Olusoji Thompson has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly killing his 86-year-old father, High Chief Clifford Olumekun with an axe.

The suspect allegedly carried out the dastardly act at the deceased’s residence at No 1, Okeraye Street, Idepe in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph who disclosed the incident told DAILY POST on Friday that the suspect has been detained at the State Criminal Investigative Department of the command for further investigation.

He stated further that after the police’s investigation, the suspect would be charged to court.

“They also found out that blood stains that were supposed to be on the deceased’s body had been carefully cleaned and his corpse was wrapped in a big cloth as if he died naturally. ”

Politics / Nigeria Police Force Sacks Officers Attached To Governor Wike by disc20: 4:51pm On Jan 06, 2017
An Inspector and five sergeants attached to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike have been dismissed by the Nigeria Police Force.

The affected police personnel, ex-Inspector Eyong Victor, ex-Sgts. Peter Ekpo, Oguni Goodluck, Orji Nwoke, Okpe Ezekiel and Tanko Akor were dismissed over alleged misuse of fire arms during the just concluded legislative rerun in the state.
The dismissed operatives were said to have disobeyed senior officers by preventing officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from moving election results of Emouha polling unit to the appropriate collation centre, an action that contravenes the provisions of Force Order 237.

Parading the ex-police officers on Friday in Abuja, the Force spokesperson, Donald Awunah said the behaviour of the recalcitrant operatives was a breach of directive and its unacceptable.

According to Awunah, the recalcitrant operatives in the course of discreet investigations were found to have disrespected directives, compromised and engaged in unprofessional acts.
He said, “These aforementioned police personnel while in the convoy of the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike on the date of election on December 10, 2016 misused the firearms in their possession contrary to the provisions of Force Order 237.

“The personnel became overzealous, took laws into their hands and opened fire, causing panic in the crowd.

“They joined in storming the Port Harcourt City Council Secretariat and prevented the movement of election results of Emouha polling unit to the appropriate collation centre designated by INEC, in flagrant disregard and disobedience to senior police officers present at the venue.

“They will be prosecuted under the Electoral Act to serve as a deterrent to others.

“Their actions are capable of bringing the entire Nigeria Police Force to disrepute and portray the Force in a very bad light as a lawless organization not guided by the rule of law.”

Education / OMG: Over 700 Students Expelled From FUTMINNA by disc20: 4:24pm On Jan 06, 2017
The Federal University of Technology, Minna, has expelled 700 students for various offences ranging from bad behaviour to poor academic performance in the 2015/2016 academic session.

The institution’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Musbau Akanji, revealed this on Thursday during the 30th matriculation ceremony of the university in Minna.

Akanji said the majority of the students were expelled due to low academic performance and anti-social behaviour.

According to him, the university has cancelled the practice of awarding pass mark for first degree courses, while the score has been raised. Consequently, most of those expelled did not score above 1.5 out of a possible GPA of 5.0.

He said the university hopes to reduce the high rate of failures recorded last year, adding that tutorial lecturers from the Postgraduate School would be engaged to assist the students.

The vice-chancellor, however, advised the matriculated students as well as all the students to be committed to their studies, urging them to shun examination malpractice, cultism, theft, and illicit drug use, adding that the university had set up the Committee Against Anti-Social Activities to monitor students who engage in anti-social behaviour.

Health / Woman Abandons Newborn Twins In Lagos Hospital Over N150k Hospital Bill by disc20: 1:51pm On Jan 05, 2017
A new mother, Sarah Ademola, has fled the Felken Maternity Centre in the Somolu area of Lagos State, where she was delivered of a set of twins.

She left behind the two newborn girls at the centre.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Sarah disappeared from the facility due to the inability of her husband, Adeyemi Ademola, to pay the sum of N150,000 owed the hospital.

Our correspondent learnt that the whereabouts of the woman had been unknown since December 16, 2016, when she sneaked out of Felken on Awofodu Street, Pedro bus stop.

Adeyemi said he was not at home when his wife was delivered of the twins, adding that he had been struggling to raise funds to no avail.

He said appeals to the centre’s management to allow him pay by installment were turned down.

He said, “Sarah is my second wife. I had been married to my first wife for some time and when she didn’t conceive, family members started mounting pressures on us. When the pressure was unbearable, she told me to go ahead and get someone that could give me a child.

“In less than two years after I met this one (Sarah), she conceived. I was not at home on the day she was delivered of the twins. I was asked to pay N300,000 for the medical bills and from where I was, I sent N20,000 as a deposit. Because of the nature of my job, I couldn’t make it to the hospital immediately.

“But when I was off duty, I visited the hospital. At a point, I begged the management to give me some time and that I would pay them by installment, but they refused.”

He said his family later raised N70,000 from a cooperative society to make the money N90,000.

Adeyemi, who claimed to be an escort, said he was heart-broken when he heard that his wife fled the hospital over his failure to settle the bill.

He said, “On the day she ran away, I emptied my account and withdrew N60,000 through the Automated Teller Machine to make the money N150,000. I begged them to allow me to write an undertaking, and that I would not default, and that I would pay them.

“There are people owing me as well. Somebody is owing me N1.5m, another person has been owing me N280,000 since 2008, and I didn’t kill those people because of that. So, why can’t they be patient with me too?

“Now, I was told the Divisional Police Officer of Somolu Police Station wants to see me and I have been given a letter; I don’t understand all these drama?”

When our correspondent asked if he had seen his wife since she fled the hospital, he denied, adding that he had also deleted her telephone number from his mobile phone.

“I don’t know where she is right now. But I don’t really care about her. I have asked myself, if a woman could do something like this to less than two weeks old babies, what will happen if I had a bigger challenge in the future? So, I don’t want to have anything to do with her again,” he said.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Adeyemi’s first wife, Oluwabunmi, had been nursing the babies at the maternity centre since Sarah fled.

A source said Sarah, before dating Adeyemi, had had five children through her first marriage.

She said, “The reason she fled was primarily because of the money. She also said she didn’t plan to be pregnant with twins. She said she had had five children already and to add another two would be a burden.”

Our correspondent visited the maternity centre on Wednesday and the Matron of Felken Maternity Centre, Mrs. Gloria Akinbobola, said the centre had reported the case to the police at the Somolu division.

She explained that Sarah was not a registered patient at the hospital, adding that she was brought by a traditional birth attendant.

She said, “On December 3, 2016, she was rushed in, accompanied by a traditional birth attendant. No member of her family came with her. We discovered she had high blood pressure during pregnancy. Her blood pressure at the time she was brought in was 240/140. It was a case of life and death.

“We called a surgeon to attend to her and when we saw that it was a critical case, we called the husband and advised that she should be taken to a general hospital. But he begged us to save the lives of the mother and the babies.

“I spoke with him on the telephone and said his bill was N300,000 and he said he was ready to pay. He promised to send a deposit of N40,000, which he didn’t. But we didn’t mind and went on with the job; she was delivered of the babies by the specialists we brought.

“The husband later sent N20,000 and said he would send the rest of the money. We were, however, surprised that for seven days the man didn’t show up at the centre.”

Akinbobola said the specialists that attended to the patient advised that she should be kept under watch for two weeks, adding that workers at the facility were awake for three days.

“After 10 days, she said she was going to a microfinance bank to get money and we asked a nurse to accompany her. She paid N70,000.

“Few days after, I asked her how the family was planning to pay the rest of the bill and she said they were making efforts. We didn’t disturb her.

“On December 16, the day she left, I saw her discussing with someone on the telephone. Later, we discovered she was nowhere to be found,” she added.

She said the maternity centre’s delegation was on its way to seeing the family when Adeyemi’s first wife, Oluwabunmi, showed up to cater to the babies.

She said the hospital started sending people to the family house on Ayoola Street, in the Bariga area, for the balance to be paid, but the husband didn’t respond.

She said when she decided to report the case to the police, Adeyemi begged for time.

Akinbobola said the management of the centre was surprised when Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, queried them for keeping the babies.

She said, “Even in a general hospital, you pay for services. What if we had insisted that they pay the bills before we admitted her? Wouldn’t she have died? She survived by God’s grace. If we asked the family not to pay the balance of N150,000, how are we going to survive?”

Falana said detaining babies over debts owed by their parents was against the law.

He said, “It is illegal to detain the children. If the parents owed, the hospital must find a way of getting the money from them. What if anything happens to those babies; what will they say? I have warned the owner of the hospital that if we are compelled to sue, the damage that will be paid will be more than the money they are asking for.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the police planned to mediate in the matter.

She said, “The division received a report on the case. The DPO is inviting all the parties involved with the aim of settling the case amicably.”

Politics / I Was Impeached Because I Did Not Share Money – Former Abia Speaker, Martins Azu by disc20: 9:28pm On Jan 03, 2017
Six days after being ousted from office, Chief Martins Azubuike, the former Speaker, Abia House of Assembly, says his uprightness cost him the job.

Azubuike, who made the disclosure on Sunday at a reception by his community, Umunneato-Ngwa, said he was impeached because of not consenting to the sharing of funds meant for projects.

He said, instead: “I chose to deploy available funds to projects and not sharing it among members’’.

The reception was organised by Umunneato-Ngwa, a socio-cultural body.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group comprises three sister-local government areas of Osisioma Ngwa, Isiala Ngwa North and Isiala Ngwa South of the state.
He told the audience that he committed no impeachable offence but was removed because he did not accede to demands to share allocations to the house among the members.

Azubuike, highly revered by workers in the House of Assembly for his experience as a third-term legislator, listed the projects executed during his more than one year tenure as Speaker.

According to him, the projects include the completion of an office complex for the 24 legislators which was started in 2007.

Azubuike said other projects were the computerisation of the operations and a website for the Assembly to enable members to track its activities from within and outside the complex.

He said that he also procured vehicles for the members and two buses for committee assignments by members.

Sports / No Football Club Needs Mikel Obi Said Antonio Conte by disc20: 9:21pm On Jan 03, 2017
Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has said the club has not received any concrete offer for midfielder, John Obi Mikel.

The Super Eagles captain is expected to quit Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window and Spanish side Valencia, has revealed it met with the player on Christmas Day in London

“For now, we have no news,” Conte replied when quizzed on Mikel’s situation during his pre-match conference on Tuesday.

Conte, who was speaking ahead of their Derby against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Wednesday, said he has a full squad to pick his team from.

He, however, said he was not interested in breaking the record for an unbeaten run within a season, but in a win.

“No, me, the players, we want to win to take three points,” he added.

“The record, I repeat, is a great achievement above all because after these 13 wins in a row we took 39 points. The other situations are not important for us.

“This type of game gives you great motivation. Now every team wants to stop our run, not only Tottenham.

“If you see the table, we have only five points more than second-placed Liverpool, and seven points more than Manchester City, and, if Arsenal beat Bournemouth today, we are only six points from them.”

Conte continued: “The league is very open, and we are only in the first game of the second part of the season.

“Tomorrow we know we will have a really tough game against Tottenham.

“If after the game we have eight points more than the second team we will be pleased, but this league is very tough and you can lose points any game.”

On December 25, Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page: "Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah from Priscilla, Max, Beast and me!"

Zuckerberg previously referred to himself as an atheist on his Facebook page for several years, according to Quartz.

When Zuckerberg visited China in 2015, he prayed outside the Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an. "Buddhism is an amazing religion and philosophy, and I have been learning more about it over time," he said at the time. "I hope to continue understanding the faith more deeply."

Here is Zuckerberg's full holiday message:

"Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah from Priscilla, Max, Beast and me!

Politics / PDP Youths Accused Army For Presenting Fake Boko Haram Flag To Buhari by disc20: 7:43am On Jan 03, 2017
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Youth Frontier, has alleged that the Nigerian Army presented a “fake Boko Haram flag” to President Muhammadu Buhari recently.

Recall that the Army recently presented a flag belonging to Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram sect to Buhari at the Presidential villa, Abuja.

The flag alongside a Qur’an belonging to Shekau was recovered by the Army during the capture of “Camp Zero,” a major stronghold of Boko Haram commanders, located in Sambisa Forest.

But the PDP youth, in a statement on its twitter handle, @PDPNYF said the presentation of the insurgent flag to Buhari was a disgrace to the “sovereignty” of Nigeria.

The tweet reads: “By presenting a FAKE Boko Haram flag as a sign of victory against the Sect. This is so unfortunate and a disgrace to our sovereignty.”

The group noted that the “Flag and Quoran are not Shekau head. Could Obama bring back Osama Bin Ladin’s Qoran and Flag without killing him?”
