Chapter 6
Loosed Ends

Jasper watched Leech enter his house and hid near the house. The street was free of witnesses and that was golden. All he needed there was to pick the right time to kill him because everything good was playing into his hands.
***
As he sat in front of his laptop to watch the movie, an unknown number called his phone.
‘Hello’, he said cautiously, hoping that it wouldn’t be Shade.
‘Hello, Mr. Olusola’, Miss Jacobs voice said, ‘It’s me … Rita’.
‘Ah! Miss Jacobs’, he said with relief.
‘I don’t know. Did you by chance see my lesson note?’
‘No’, he replied but caught himself in the midsentence because the book he had been holding was hers. ‘Wait… It’s with me’.
‘Oh! Great. Let's meet at Rivers street’.
Jerry slouched in frustration as he rose from the bed, locked the door, and had to stop himself from running. Was it not a movie? He could see it any time. He remembered he didn't plug the laptop to electricity.
***
Jasper backed away immediately Leech came out. Leech almost saw him and that shouldn't happen. Jasper hid behind the walls and took pictures of Leech to make the others see the time before he killed him. Immediately he was done with the job, he would take the other picture as a proof.
Jasper braced himself the moment Leech came out the second time, getting ready to follow him, to kill him; in fact, he had an idea. He smiled and smiled again.
Jasper looked about, and saw that no one was there except an old haggard beggar that laid at the end of the street and was asleep. He brought out his pistol, placed a silencer into it, and steadied himself.
Leech rushed past without noticing anyone around. Jasper followed him and knew it might take the whole year if he kept following without doing anything. He needed to up his game. So, he went near Leech, near enough for him to stick his gun to his back. Jasper looked to the left and the right and saw no one. The street was empty for reason he couldn’t place his hands on. But he loved it. He loved it like that.
‘Don’t panic. It is your death at hand’, Jasper announced, ‘I have a loaded revolver pointed at your spinal cord, arched enough to hit your heart. So, cooperate’.
Leech froze but Jasper nudged him. ‘Keep moving, Leech’.
‘Leech?’
‘Take us to a secluded place’
‘I did not get that’.
‘I said take us to a secluded place’.
‘A secluded place?’
‘Yes… for introduction, you can call me Sheila, I like long walks and fresh flowers. Since fresh flowers can easily be found by rivers, I don’t mind you taking us to the river around this area, where I can see and enjoy my fresh, lively flowers’.
‘No… I mean I don’t know any river here’.
‘What? You are lying to me. Is this not Agric Area?’
‘I don’t know any river’, Leech said. Jasper stopped him and faced him. Now, there was nobody in the street that could testify against the death of Leech but he didn’t want to play to chance. If anybody saw him after he killed Leech, the information might be used against him later. Jasper wasn't ready to start cleaning messes and evidences. No one catches an assassin and he didn’t want to be the assassin to be caught in 20years.
‘I hope your neurons are working well. I hope you can feel the gun I’m sticking to your back?’
‘Who are you?’ Leech said with a quivering voice and that made Jasper’s voice warmer and deeper. He loved when people begged for their life. The taste of killing such people was always sweet. Their plea always gave him the desire to deepen his voice because it gave him power and made others believe he had the power.
Yet, he must agree with them. After all, he had the power to either give them life or take it away from them, like God, like a god.
‘Okay, buckle up. Can’t you think of any at all? I’ve got all day’.
‘I don’t know any…’
‘Then, I will have to kill you here. Surely’, Jasper hissed like a wounded snake as his eyes darted from one corner of the deserted street to the other. He placed the gun on Jasper’s head
‘Wait…Wait…’ Leech cried, ‘I know a pond’.
‘Goodly…Take us there, and smile. I hate people who frown’.
Jasper let down his guard a little and Leech seized the opportunity. He turned sharply and kicked Jasper in his groin. Jasper moaned. Leech gave him another punch on the nose. Jasper bent forward as pain surged through his body, making him clasp his teeth.
Jasper was angry. He shot the floor around Leech, who was bracing himself to hit him again. Leech jumped repeatedly in fear that he had been shot.
‘If you move, I will shoot’, he said with a suppressed anger as he wheezed like a monster, ‘now, your hands up’.
He felt like shooting the sky, like shooting God for giving him such a voice that doesn’t send fear into people. Leech raised his hands.
‘Leech, you are a bastard and I will show you what we do to bastards’, Jasper groaned, baring his teeth. He slapped Leech. ‘Take me to the pond quickly’.
They moved from the street to the pond. Although they passed many people, nobody noticed anything awkward about the way he was holding Leech. Even if they knew, they dared not talk.
The road that led to the pond was like one coming down a mountaintop to an area. The whole road was rough. Trees of different forms shook briefly. Most of their leaves were dry and were lying on the floor. Birds rested on the branches of these trees, chirping and humming with so much glee that one would wonder if they didn’t know about the dry season or that they could see the rain coming.
When they got to the pond, they had to go deeper as if they were entering another hole. The sky was unusually white and devoid of any cloud. Even the few that tried to show themselves dissolved immediately as if abhorred the evil Jasper would carry out. Thinking of that alone made him beam.
Flowers from different parts of the place gladdened his heart.
‘You were trying to hit me the other time. What are you? A kind of superman or something? I have dealt with people of greater caliber and greater power than yours and I had vanquished, grinded and dissolved them off the earth. Therefore, you won’t be an exception. In fact, your case is pro bono’, Jasper announced spreading his hands. ‘I’ll kill you happily’.
The body of water kept stirring slowly. Dirt and leaves floated gently on it. He smiled as he sighted lilies dancing on the water. His heart warmed. That was a good sign.
‘Face the river’.
He gagged Leech to reduce the noise he would make. Leech moaned something.
‘Oh! I’m sorry…What? I can’t hear you clearly’, Jasper mocked with a face smeared with a wicked happiness, 'with the… you’ve got something across your mouth and I can’t hear you’.
‘Okay… Okay. I don’t do this always. This opportunity comes once in every twenty kill and you are the one getting the seventh opportunity. Say your last prayer sharperly’.
Leech brought his hands together and prayed inaudibly.
‘Alright. It’s party time’, Jasper said as he pointed the gun to Leech’s head. He suddenly had a feeling someone was watching him, that someone’s eyes were creeping slowly on his back. He looked back but saw no one. Yet, he knew that even if someone wasn't there, someone was coming to that place very soon and he didn’t want anyone to know he was there.
Jasper inhaled a deep breath of relief, fulfilment, and happiness as he exerted force on the trigger of the gun.
Suddenly, something like an insect hit him at the back of the head. He touched the back of his head.
***
Jerry himself didn’t know he could cry but tears poured down his eyes as he felt the coldness of the gun on the back of his head. His whole body vibrated. To worsen the situation, hot liquid ran between his legs. Was that how he would die?
He swallowed hard when the guy said the prayer time was over. He should have been careful when he saw the guy in their area that afternoon. But he couldn’t suspect everyone he met on the street.
He held his breathe, expecting the pain to surge through his head to his body and him drifting off into the abyss.
Instead of the bullet, he felt a body crashing into him from behind. He opened his eyes that he didn’t know he had closed. The guy’s body was now resting on him lifelessly. He moaned fearfully as he pushed the dead body to a side.
Jumping from his kneeling position, his eyes darted from one corner of the area to the other but he didn’t see anyone. Vibrating like a wet leaf, he raised his hands. A bullet had drilled a hole into the back of his assailant’s head and opened a way for blood to ooze out. The guy’s eyes were blank as if he was a statute and his hand was now loosely holding the gun. Everywhere was silent.
Jerry looked around desperately as he expected either a gunshot or someone to come out to confront him. But, after waiting for some seconds, he ran out of the riverside and out of the place. Nothing happened to him.
Then, he stopped and looked around to be sure no one saw him there. Happy that he was safe, he walked on briskly to his house, jogging whenever he got to a secluded area. His heart was beating fast and he couldn’t help gasping.
Someone had tried to kill him. He saw a dead person. Someone killed his assailant. Someone committed a cold-blooded murder and had left him alone to deal with the problem of the body. Who was Leech?
Jerry locked the door and crammed himself to a corner of the room, staring out of focus into the space.
Though the person saved his life, he felt the person needed to show him his face, to allow him thank him. But there was none to thank and that scared him because he didn't know who the killer was following- him or his assailant.
Then his phone rang, Miss Jacobs.
‘Oh! Miss Jacobs, I’m sorry, I’m on my way’.
He risked going out again, this time looking back from time to time.
*** Officer Yemi James looked at his phone again and wondered why he had to be the one that his boss sent to the crime scene. There were many people, who were his junior in the work of investigating. They should receive more training as this case would be a minor case. As he got there, he met some policemen trying to make sense out of the unexplainable situation. They kept warding people away from the area around the pond.
‘Make a hole’, Yemi shouted as he passed through them.
‘Hey, move back, are you insane?’ A lanky police shouted. He was reeking of alcohol. Yemi held his breathe when he got near the policeman.
‘What do you have on him?’ He asked another policeman, who was checking the corpse.
They showed him the gun, the dead man's phone, and all his weapons.
‘No identity?’
‘None’.
Yemi became interested in the phone. He surfed through it but found nothing of interest, and was about to pass it to another policeman, when he saw something that interested him. A picture taken some moments before the time of his death. He stared blankly at the body of river because he knew the person in the picture.

Chapter 5

Chased by A Past

Jerry wondered, as he walked to school, if he wasn't supposed to ever love fair ladies because he couldn’t fathom the reason the two fair beautiful ladies left him. That day was the third day after he met the beautiful thief. Yet, he couldn’t keep his mind off her. Sometimes, when he mistaken other people for her.
He was an early riser and always made sure he got to the school first. In addition, luckily for him, his street wasn't far from his school- trekable. When he got to three streets from his, he wasn't surprised to see the beggar, seated already. This beggar was an old crippled woman.
However, he felt enormous pity for her whenever he saw her and for that he decided that he would always give her a big amount of money every day. Seeing that he had no family member to help him enjoy the money he was now getting, and everything he owned. He saw no harm in giving the poor woman some money, making her day, putting smile on her dry ragged lips.
‘Good morning’, he said as he brought out a note and gave it to her absent-mindedly.
‘Thank you my son, the sun of this earth shall not shine like your glory would’, she said with cracked voices, as she collected the money with delights in her eyes, her brown teeth matching the colour of her brown tattered wrapper.
Something fell from her hand as he turned. He turned to see what fell he couldn't see it clearly as she had hidden it in her cloth. Was that a gun? He wondered.
Well, he didn't see it clearly but he was sure it was a black object. She smiled deceptively at him. Whatever she was hiding in her cloth was her problem and not his. He kept walking and then paused when he realized he had just given the woman a thousand naira.
‘What is wrong with me?’ he whispered. His mind wandered off to the dry ground, which looked as if even if rain fell for thousands of years, it would never become muddy.
The rain, which everyone was expecting, had only sent storm and thunder to announce its impending visitation, and had been doing that for days without showing up.
After closing from school that day, he decided to hang around and walk home with the Agric and P.H.E teachers, with whom he discussed and enjoyed himself. He sighted the old woman again and his mind went to the black object.
‘Uncle, we’ve always being talking about our past, but I’ve never seen you say anything about yourself. Why?’ Said the Yoruba teacher, Miss Rita Jacobs. ‘one eats with a friend because of the pleasure of friendship not because one lacks’.
Miss Jacobs was a tawny lady; slim, tall, and would have been considered beautiful, if not that she wore long, faded skirts, big blouse and gowns, shoes that were always oversized. Her dressing had a way of confusing people on what category of people to classify her in- a member of deeper life or S.U? Her hair- rather, her wig- disfigured her face so much that one might be forced to imagine how ugly her children would be. However, she didn’t look like someone who cared about their crazy talks. Her ear and body were always devoid of jewelries.
Although she wasn’t married, she was looking older than most old women, making many men avoid her like plague. Even Jerry didn’t like her when he first met her, but hearing her speak: her seasoned opinion, her reliable advice, and her joy always enthralled him that he felt like listening to her always.
‘Enn…’ Jerry muttered and shrugged, ‘I have nothing interesting to say’.
As they got out of the staffroom and headed towards the gate.
‘Do you mean your childhood was that boring?’ Miss Jacobs said as she looked at him as if she was seeing a ghost for the first time in her life.
Jerry hissed and grinned.
‘That means you didn’t go out of your way to have fun with ladies, and you know what I mean…’ She made a face at him.
‘Ahhh!’ He belched in laughter, and bent forward, covering his mouth as his eyes roamed the street, 'Miss Jacobs, don’t let children hear you say that’.
‘What did she say? The line from which you are taking this thing is too serious. Almost all the men that I’ve ever come across, including me had done it before’, the P.H.E teacher added.
Jerry held onto his bag and stared into the space. He wished he could also tell them fascinating and exciting adventures but there was nothing he could do, nothing to say. Seeing that they would keep pestering him, he decided to fabricate his past a little. A little dot and brushing wouldn’t destroy anything.
‘Well…’ he said and saw their eyes brightened, ‘I didn’t do anything. You know I was a cool boy, little trouble, no girlfriend, few friends, and thing like that’.
He saw that the brightness in the P.H.E teacher eyes fade, replaced by an irritating look.
‘Are you kidding me?’ In this year?’
‘Actually…’ Jerry said, to give them something to hold, a reason good enough for them to stop talking about his past, 'I lived with reverend Fathers, Popes. You know how strict it would be there’.
‘That's a big lie… My friend, Paul, lived in a monastery also. If I tell you how many women he had taken to bed even before he escaped the prison of a place, you would not close your mouth'.
Jerry scratched his head as he became lost. The flow of thought had reduced drastically, and his thinking, shallow; ideas refused to form in his brain. They danced a little in his brain, but when he tried to form something out of them they showed themselves as useless and unfit for use.
Then, APC members campaigning got into the street. As it was usual in the month of October; they had introduced it to the month of November. Jerry looked up and saw, from the corner of his eyes with relief that the P.H.E teacher had open his mouth midway. He had been meaning to continue with the topic but the campaigners infuriated him.
‘What is wrong with these ones?’ the P.H.E teacher complained. He liked to complain about things: neighbors, the students, the management.
Jerry, still staring at the people, wasn’t looking at his front when his left leg hit a stone, making him moan.
‘When you use your left leg to hit a stone’, Miss Jacobs said, ‘that means there is danger looming somewhere’.
Miss Jacobs was from the western Nigeria and had value for the culture of her land unlike most Nigerians in Fortune City. Jerry immediately snapped his fingers across his head as if the looming danger was a dirt on his head and he was trying to dust it off.
‘That is a lie’, the P.H.E teacher said.
However, Jerry had a feeling Miss Jacobs was right because he couldn't shake off the fear of impending doom. He had plans to buy the film the beautiful night thief recommended. Therefore, after leaving the two teachers, he boarded a bike to a popular junction.
It him a while to get but when he eventually did, he was so excited that he didn't know see someone approaching. The guy was a sturdy short on.
‘Hey... Guy, 're you blind? Am I too short?’ The person asked irksomely with a voice that sounded like a broken record.
‘I’m sorry… sorry’.
***
Jasper, a dreaded sharp shooter among all the criminals of Fortune City, stood transfixed as he saw who it was that had just run into him. He almost screamed and ran for his life.
‘Sorry for yourself’, he shouted as he pushed past him. At that instance, he hated his voice. Leech wasn’t dead. Leech was still alive. He shook his head as he watched Leech leave. He frowned as Leech left. Leech would never forget a face, never. He remembered faces and names more than anyone Jasper had ever met, and Leech, not recognizing him surprised Jasper.
‘Wow…’ Jasper mouthed, and wrinkled his nose as he wondered if that was indeed Leech because Once, a top Fortune City assassin, had killed Leech and their doctor confirmed the death.
Once was his senior in the job of assassination, who was called Once because he killed once and for all and had been getting jobs a lot from chief.
Peradventure one discovered that another assassin didn’t kill a person he was supposed to kill. And, one got the opportunity to kill this 'dead' person, one would get the opportunity to kill that other assassin with dignity because one of the code of conducts of Fortune City association of Life Taker (F.A.L.T) restricted assassins from killing one another without an authorization from top men like chief.
Jasper had been looking for opportunity to kill Once ever since the day he killed since the day he killed someone close to him. Seeing an opportunity like this again, and finding diamond on the street of Fortune City. Both were impossible.
Jasper changed his mind about going to survey the house of the new person he was to kill. He would do that later. He followed Leech and saw him clutching a book, and a film, very typical of him. Leech boarded a bike, which drove off immediately.
With his weapons bag dangling from his shoulder, Jasper climbed a bike.
‘Follow that guy’, Jasper ordered as he pointed at Leech,’ follow him gently’.
The bike zoomed off. He was happy that he was holding his weapons bag since most of the things he needed to kill Leech were there. Now, he would definitely kill him sweet and clean as he did all his job unlike that foolish Once. With the thought of that, he smiled and licked his lips. He tasted imaginary blood. The bike zoomed into a street and stopped.
‘Stop’, he hissed at his own bike driver and dropped, ‘how much?’
‘70 naira’.
Jasper brought out five hundred naira note from his pocket and gave it to the bike man, his eyes glued on Leech’s back as Leech moved towards a house.
‘Keep the change’.
‘Boss, thank you’.
Jasper felt like calling Chief Suberu that he saw Leech, but he didn’t want to bring the news of Leech being alive. He didn’t want to spoil the suspense; instead, he would do as Chief had always wanted. He would kill Leech.
Even if this person wasn’t Leech, he would still kill him and falsify the evidence just to get to Once. There was a need to kill Once once and for all.
***
Jerry glanced at the side as he dropped from the bike, and saw the guy he ran into at the bus stop getting off a bike. He smiled as he strolled to his room.
‘Human. Water’, he muttered.

Chapter 4

The Last Piece of Peace

Jerry shook his head to ward off the fear that gathered in his heart. At that moment, he needed to have a clear head else it would be a bad news for both of them. He didn’t see the lady but he heard the bed squeak. The heavy knock came again. He quickly went to the bed.
‘Hide under the bed’, he whispered the moment his leg touched the bed, ‘hide’.
‘Yes?’ He called with a drowsy but loud voice, making the bed creak to make them assume he was just getting off it.
With relief that she was hiding well and that he was pretending well, he got ready to face the task of warding off her pursuers.
‘Yes…?’ He called again, ‘Who is there?’
‘Street youths’.
‘This night? What do you want?’
‘Bro. Jerry, it's me, your landlord. Please, open the door. We want to ask you something important’.
Jerry gently opened the door and was stunned by the sight that met him. All he could do was to stand his ground, open the door and make sure his legs were covering the exposed part of the house. Hefty men stared at him with cold glare and heaving sweaty body. In fact, the lanky ones looked hefty to Jerry as he swallowed his spittle agitatedly. Many of them carried clubs, cutlasses, or rods, making him wonder how he would live to see these people beat up the lady. He couldn’t release her to their hunger for a kill. They will make her disappear under their beating as if she were a mist.
‘Yes?’ He said as his blood raced like wild boars within his body and his heart pumped like illegally freed prisoners.
‘Did you see anybody?’
‘This midnight?’
‘Yes’.
‘He ran through this house’, someone chipped in.
‘No, I didn’t see anyone’, Jerry said.
‘Gentleman’, a short man said, moving forward with an aggressive look, 'the thief can only run through this place or crawl into your place. Don't turn us to actors. I don't act. I find thieves and tear them to piece. I don't act’.
‘Small’, a hefty man that can easily be passed as their leader raised his right hand and faced Jerry. His lip had a wicked smile lingering on it. ‘In case you hear anything or suspect anything, please raise an alarm’.
‘Ok’, Jerry nodded as he held onto the door as if it was his only covering, and even pulled it to himself well when one the pursuers stretched his neck to see the room.
‘Let’s go’ the leader said as they hurried away.
Jerry panted and had to take all the effort in the world not to slam the door in relief.
‘They are gone’, he whispered.
The lady scrambled out of her hiding, sat on the edge of the bed, and dropped her hands on her lap and stared into the oblivion. Jerry placed his hand on his mouth, watched her for some minutes and felt like schooling her on the need for contentment. But he decided against it, shrugged, and went to the switch off the light. And as he switched it off. Voices filtered in.
‘The guy is lying like Fayez's mother. I know people like them’, someone shouted angrily. Jerry looked out of the window and saw that their number had increased, 'this is the only place the thief could have entered'.
‘Okay’, the leader said and talked to them in low tone.
Jerry rushed to his wardrobe, brought out a short, a wrapper and one of his big polo.
‘Get off the bed, and remove your cloth’, he whispered hurriedly, his heart pumping hard against his chest. The noise of the men got nearer, and their shuffling feet grew louder.
The lady hesitated for some seconds and that made Jerry stopped breathing for some minutes. He felt like smacking her across the cheek.
‘You are silly’, he groaned in anger as he rushed to her, and pulled off her clothes and her boots, making her hands fly to cover her unclothedness. The noise grew louder. He smirked.
He removed the cloth and gave her the ones he brought out of his wardrobe. She wore them hurriedly as if there was fire on her body and the cloth would quench it.
Jerry lifted the mattress, dropped the clothes and the boots under it and was about to drop the bed when he remembered something.
‘Are you out of your mind?’ he grumbled, pure anger reflecting in his voice, ‘your mask’.
She bit the mask and hesitated again. Jerry spun his head, rushed to her, and peeled it off her head.
‘Wow’, he mouthed as he saw her head. The first attention grabber was her nose. It was not like any other nose, not too slim and not too big. She had an emerald face. One could stare at it for days, weeks, months, and years and still have the desire to keep staring. His heart lurched as he saw her searching, white and oval eyes. Jerry was dumbfounded for that milliseconds as he stared into those eyes and felt like wiping away all fear and danger from it. The expected knock came, making him jolt out of his semi-trance.
‘Lie down… For this few seconds, you are my girlfriend’, he whispered.
She nodded and got into the bed, covering her body with the wrapper.
‘Yes…’Jerry shouted angrily, ‘who is there? Why are you people disturbing me?’
He turned back to confirm that she was fully prepared. He grinned and gave her thumb-up. Then, he saw the gun he collected from her. Although it was a toy gun, he knew the implication of having it around. So, he ran back and tucked it under the mattress. Then, he opened the door.
‘Bro…’The leader said as he opened the door, ‘we are sorry for disturbing you… One of our men was sure he saw you outside before the whole pursuit started. Since it was dark before we started pursuing him, the thief might have crawled into your room without you knowing’, he bent his head to a side, ‘you know what I mean’.
‘So, what are you suggesting?’
‘Were you not outside?’
‘Yes, I was outside’.
‘We will be forced to search your room’
‘No…no…’
‘Yes. Please be diplomatic about it’, he said, and shifted forward,’ you don’t want these guys to go in by force’.
Jerry opened the door wide. ‘Alright, enter but don’t disturb my girlfriend; she is not feeling too well’.
Luckily for Jerry and the lady, she was afraid of being caught that she was shaking really hard. So, the pursuer believed she was sick. They searched everywhere- under the bed, his wardrobe- but found nothing.
‘Let’s go’, the leader commanded, ‘we will surely catch him’.
When they got to the door, the leader turned to Jerry.
‘Mr…?’
‘Jerry’
‘Good… Thanks for allowing us search, and for not preventing us from keeping this community safe from riffraff. Please, we will request that you join us in our community policing. More so, we have not being seeing you in our meetings. The youth meeting, I mean. I hope we will be seeing your face there…’
‘Okay’, Jerry said, gritting his teeth as he was becoming restless and hoped the hefty man would leave before his fear took over.
‘Have a good night rest’.
‘And you too, I hope you find… the thief’.
Sighing heavily as he switched off the light, he waved his hands to indicate that her pursuers were gone. Hitting the floor, he slept like a log until the morning.
Morning? The lady was supposed to leave before the morning came. He rolled and rose hastily to wake her. However, the bed was empty and instead of her, he found a note.
Dear Jerry,
Don’t be surprised I know your name; I heard it from this morning’s ordeal. I can’t thank you enough. You have the kindest heart I’ve ever seen. I am not sure I’ll be able to complete my mission, but I have taken your short with me to remind me of you, and I have planted a kiss on your right cheek to remind you of me always. Thank you.
P.S. I recommend that you watch Jack Ryan, the recruit, it will help you a lot.

Chapter 3
Saviour of The Night

The weeks that followed Shade’s sudden disappearance from his life weakened the hope that he had harbored in his heart of ever having a relationship with her. He hoped she would guide his path. Nothing looked like hope.
Seeing this, he decided to live a normal life. If it was anything near normal. Fortunately for him, he had written the password to most of his things in his diary. That gave him ample opportunities to withdraw money from his bank after he discovered that he was two million naira rich.
Jerry started teaching English in the school, and nothing made him happier than to know that he was good at teaching English. He was enjoying every stay in that part of Greencity. In fact, he enjoyed listening to other teachers tell their experiences, especially the wayward ones. He loved the way they enthusiastically described their evil deeds, putting comma to every of their sentences, and using the appropriate adjectives to describe their escapades.
After school, he would walk about the area to see if there was anything to remind him of who he was. but nothing brought back the memory. So, he decided to remain in his comfort zone: go to school, sleep, eat, and the rest, enjoying his new and perfect life.
Later, he joined a church and was active there, studying the bible as if it was the only thing in the world. Pastor Matthew was his favorite pastor. Once he even helped Pastor Matthew escape from some people that called him crazy.
Pastor Matthew had just returned from a mental home after the psychiatrists told them he was better. He said God wanted him to keep wild animals. So, he paid some hunters who got him some breeds of snakes. These reptiles escaped and gave people the scare. Jerry believed he wasn't crazy and helped him escape when his church members tied him down.
Sometimes, Jerry would do some background research on himself, but he always met a dead end; in fact, when he got to the schools he saw in his certificates, they didn't give him helpful information. Even the phone numbers they gave him were either wrong or not available. And for four months, he kept searching all about himself until he knew there was nothing he could do to bring back the past.
Therefore, he decided to let it go- everything- because from what the teachers at his school had been saying, having a family can even be disastrous. Nothing was as good as living alone. One got the chance to enjoy one's life. His laptop was very useful as he watched many films on it. Although he didn't know how he got the films on it, he let it go. After the third month of trying to remember, he decided that he had to let go and enjoy every bit of his life. People in the house didn't know him and were only trying to make acquaintances with him. He loved it that way. Jerry was satisfied.
It was with this mind-set he got out of his room on the night of October 30, around 12.30 a.m. The night was as dry as usual, the light had been off for four days and all his gadgets had died from him over working them. He had used his phone to play game after his laptop went off. Even the sky had been dry ever since he woke in June. There had been no record of rain anywhere in Brown Valley, Greencity, Black Town, and Suncity- the cities that are in the private Island called Fortune City. Despite the torrents of rain in the other parts of the world, they didn't get any.
Sitting on a chair in the dark night was cool. His heart lurched with happiness as he imagined himself living in a dark world for years. He mouthed Nathaniel Bassey’s song
Summer, Winter, Autumn spring.
Mountain, blue sky and the sea.
Rainbow sunshine and the trees
Jesus, maker of them all.
Everywhere I go I see you right there
In the beauty of nature, you shine al…
Something shuffled past him. He didn’t know what it was, but he knew that he had to enter his room. So, he picked his chair and rushed into the house. As he turned to close the door, someone pushed the door with so much force that Jerry fell. Quickly, he bounced back up.
‘Who is there?’ He whispered as against the noise he wanted to make.
‘Shhh’, the person hissed angrily like a snake, which tail was stepped on. Jerry held his breathe.
Several legs shuffled outside his room. That made him wished his room wasn’t opened to the street. The people outside raised their voices in desperation.
‘Catch him’.
‘He must not escape’.
‘Today must be his last’.
Jerry was transfixed. If he moved near that person, he might be injured. There was no light to show him who the person was. However, from the people outside, he understood that this person was a gentleman of the night. If caught, he would receive immediate death sentence.
Feeling terrible, Jerry shifted weight from one leg to another. In his few months in Fortune City, he had come to the realization that only a lazy person would beg in the private Island.
When the people left his arena, and decided to check other parts of the area, the power holding company of Fortunecity restored the light.
The first thing in Jerry's room to report was the old fan, which hummed-on angrily like an injured cow. The person before Jerry was panting hard and held a gun so hard that if it were a glass cup, it would have broken. The body texture of the thief surprised him. He swallowed hard. his Adam’s apple made a loud noise and made the thief glance at him. He was sure that he was seeing right. The thief was a lady.
‘I can’t let you stay here’, he muttered.
Sensing he would do what he said, she rose suddenly. Jerry moved back with fear, and raised his hands to prepare himself. Threatened thieves would do anything from maiming their attackers to killing them to elude being caught. Instead of doing any of what Jerry assumed, the lady went on her knees, clasping her hands.
‘Please, Bide…bro…’ she said, with a silky voice, 'don’t let them catch me’.
‘But you are a lady, why did you join these people?'
‘It’s a long story. Please spare me and I promise you will not regret it. Someday, I will come back to help you’.
He felt sad for her. ‘You can’t help me… I’m the one that can help you, and what I want of you and from you is that you stop stealing’.
Immediately, she raised her hands in the I-surrender position, and whimpered like one that had been shown a greater wisdom. Her mask was still on, making her look like a robot.
‘I will not steal again’.
Jerry’s eyes went to the wall and knew that he had to do something for her, and the first thing was to switch off the light, and the next was to shelter her.
‘Alright, give me your gun till tomorrow’, he said as he locked the door.
The lady looked at the gun and looked at him, then shrugged. She brought her hands forward and looked at Jerry as if he has been forewarned. When she handed the gun to Jerry, he burst into a terrible laughter that jolted her.
‘You do not mean you were using a toy gun?’ He said and smiled.
He turned the gun in his hand. For a fragment of seconds, he wished the gun was real. So that he would use it to shoot himself later in the day, to end his trouble.
‘Well, you have to wait till tomorrow. Sleep here’, he said, pointing to his bed.
‘No. Don’t worry; I’ll sleep here on the floor’.
‘No.No. Do come and sleep here’.
She agreed and laid on the bed after putting off her shoes. Instead of sleeping, she sat at the farthest corner of the bed holding herself tightly.
Jerry switched off the light, plunging the room into utmost darkness. The only light reflecting in the room was that the bulb outside shining through the curtain. He decided to lie down, to sleep.
Suddenly, the noise of the searchers came again and this time to his door. They knocked.

Chapter 2

Cutting the Last Hope
Jerry glanced about in the room again to be sure he was seeing well. How sure was he that his name was even Jerry? He sat on the edge of the bed, dejected, with his head between his hands as he stared at the ground. What did he do yesterday? No idea. Where was he?
He gently opened the door to avoid surprising himself. The street was dusty. His eyes roamed the street to savor it. Little children ran about in the street. A man on a bicycle rode in a haste. A jeep cruised the street rather slowly as if it was a very fat woman, who had been asked to compete in a 100-meter race, but couldn’t help being the last.
Birds on the wires sang happily as if the whole world was in their care. The sky was white; birds were scanty in it, maybe because the sun was very hot or because everything was dry or because they were migrating out of that part of the world. He looked at the street and knew he didn't know this place. Nothing could change that fact.
He returned to the room and checked everything in the room, leaving no tiny stone unturned. That was when he saw five diaries that belonged to him. When he had savored the information in them, he knew who he was.
His name was Jeremiah Olusola Olumide, and was born on June 25th, 1991. He looked at his calendar and saw that he celebrated his birthday the previous day. Could it be hangover? There was no logical explanation for what had happened to him.
At first, he didn’t believe the diaries were his until he wrote a few words on one of them and saw a semblance in the writings. His girlfriend's name was Shade, the lady that called. His parent died last five years, and his best friend and only friend, Martins died of HIV four months ago.
Shade knew everything about him because he told her everything. He had cheated on Shade five times. Him? The last time he asked for her forgiveness, she promised that time would be his last. In fact, she said any day she smelt any form of cheating she would leave him for good. That meant he would soon know all about himself. He must see her.
He had been given a job at an international school, where he would be paid 150,000 naira per month. Good for him.
'Can I teach?'
He got an Hp laptop some days ago and was still pondering on the password to use, and gave himself the ultimatum of the day he woke.
Although he felt compelled to seat still with the hope that he would recollect all that had happened to him, he knew he needed to act to get more information. He picked his phone to call Shade. Her phone rang at the other end and was disconnected immediately. He looked at the phone, frowned, and redialed the number.
‘You are a cheat’, someone shouted, banging her way through the door.
He was short of words by what he saw. The desire to like a dog fell on him. He would have succumbed to this desire if he didn't have to beg her. The air was filled with mixture of dryness from the season and mountain flower perfume- her perfume.
She was very fair, and busty. Her round face was well-dressed with make-up. Even, as her long eyelashes went up and down, showing perfect white eyes, his blood rate increased.
‘Are... Are you Shade?’ he said, still staring at her. Her demeanor showed someone that should be worshiped. Her leggings showed her perfect curves. Without a moment's thought, he went on his knee.
‘Please, don't leave me. I need you to help me know myself'.
‘Shut up!' She shouted, 'so… You think… In your mind of mind that you can make me cry over you again. God forbid'.
‘Please’, he cried and held her hand. The hand was smooth and as soft as butter, and its nails, neat.
'Leave my hand', she snapped.
She withdrew and pulled her hand as if his hands were filled with maggots.
‘You are useless', she muttered as she tried opening the back cover of her phone. Her breathe rushed out in faster progressions, and her hands vibrated rigorously as she removed the battery of her phone, then the sim card. She raised the sim card up for him to see it clearly, and broke it.
‘You will never ever see me or call me again and for your information', she said as she eyed him vigorously, and smiled wickedly. ‘I’m leaving Fortune City'.
Jerry felt an invisible bell ring in his head.

Misplaced Identity

Noises, laughter, scream.
He opened his eyes. The expression that might be found on a man that had just woken was the grim expression. This was the expression on his face. Yet, he wasn't having such expression because it was typical of a person waking. Rather, he was having the expression because he couldn’t help it.
The room of someone who was just waking was supposed to be his or her room, but he was sure he had never seen that room before in his life. The shoes should be his. But he couldn’t remember ever putting any of them on. Even the clothes on the hanger should be his own, but he couldn’t remember ever putting any of them on.
That was curious. Where was he? Who was he?
A phone beside him vibrated and rang the moment he placed his back on the wall. There was only one way to know he wasn't dreaming. He inhaled and exhaled, slowly and repeatedly. Yet, he couldn't remember a single thing. Still dazed, he glanced at his vibrating phone to see who the caller was: My Love. My love? He didn’t have any love or did he?
‘Hello, Jerry dear, how are you?’ A lady said into the earpiece the moment he placed his phone on his ear, happiness radiating in her voice. 'I don't even need to ask. That bed must be weak by now'.
‘I’m fine’, he said and changed his mind, ‘I’m not fine. I’m not fine. Who are you?’
‘Who…? Jerry, what are you saying?’
‘I don’t know you. I don’t know who you are’.
‘What are you saying? You don’t know me? Wait... Why will you have the effrontery to say you don't know me. Jerry, who is there with you?’
‘Here with me? Of course, nobody’, Jerry said. At the same time, some ladies bickering outside his room talked louder. ‘Is that not the voice of a lady?’
‘Yes… No’.
‘You are a liar. You are cheating on me’.
‘Cheating on you? I don’t even know you’.
‘Me…? Shade?’
‘Shade?’
‘Ah! Jerry, you are a pretender, and I know what to do to you’.
She disconnected the call. Jerry stared at the phone with his mouth agape as his eyes darted from one part of the room to another. He smacked his head again.
‘Where am I? Who am I? What is wrong with me?’ He asked himself as he climbed out of the bed.

A beautiful one.
You should try fixing punctuation marks, spacing, and capital letters as well as other things...
