More than 1,000 arrests are said to have been made in 19 cities by the Riot police in Russia as some opponents protest against Putin’s rule in Moscow and other Russian cities on Saturday.

Why were there protests?

Nearly half of the reported 1,000 arrests on Saturday were in Moscow.

Domestic opponents accuse Mr Putin of undermining democracy in Russia – a policy dubbed “managed democracy” – to keep genuine opposition parties out of parliament and ensure that he and his allies retain power indefinitely.

Mr Putin was re-elected president with more than 76% of the vote, his best ever election performance, but widespread irregularities were reported by some international observers. Allegations of ballot-rigging had dogged previous elections too.

The country’s best-known opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, was barred from standing against Mr Putin, on grounds of a conviction for embezzlement which he denies and alleges was politically motivated.

Mr Navalny was arrested briefly as he tried to join Saturday’s unauthorized protest rally in Moscow under the slogan “He’s not our tsar”.

Despite the wild protests going on in Russia, Vladimir Putin has been sworn in for his fourth term as president of Russia at a ceremony in the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow.

Eager to one-up Snapchat, Instagram appears to be preparing to enlarge its collection of shutter modes beyond options like Boomerang and Super-zoom. Buried within Instagram’s Android Application Package is an icon for a Portrait shutter for the Stories camera. This could potentially let people shoot stylised portraits with broke effect-blurred backgrounds or other lighting effects.

TechCrunch reader exclusively shared the images below with TechCrunch after decompiling the APK, which is the file format equivalent of Windows’ .exe but for Android. The icon would show up overlaid on the Instagram Stories camera shutter button when you swipe to the corresponding mode.

Instagram declined to comment on the findings, though it did the same when we asked about a Giphy GIF-sharing feature which then officially launched a week later. Instagram could always decide against publicly releasing these new features, though, if internal strategy or external testing turns against them.

“A Kid Like Jake” premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival where it received largely positive reviews. People praised Howard’s deft handling of the film’s subject matter. Howard spoke to Deadline at Sundance and said: “in spite of a lot of movement towards understanding differences, it’s still very difficult to have inclusiveness and this really does it in a human way.”

Dave Patterson and John Hennessy, two San Francisco Bay Area professors now associated with Google, have won the computing industry’s top prize for revolutionizing processors with a technology called RISC.

The pair won the 2017 A.M. Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery, a $1 million prize named after Alan Turing, the British researcher who famously helped crack German Enigma codes in World War II and lay the foundations of computer science. The high-prestige award is considered the Nobel Prize for computer science.

The Mongkutwattana General Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand has reportedly turned to robot nurses to solve the problem of looking after its patients
The Hospital was bombarded with new patients but was unable to hire enough staff at the end of last year.
Instead of taking on new nurses, they bought three robot nurses and kitted them out in the health facility’s yellow uniform.
The robots now move from desk to desk delivering important paperwork and medicine to doctors.
Hospital boss Dr Riantong said the robots with names .”Nan, Nee and Nim.” has improved efficiency and has brought a massive reduction in human errors.

He also said the hospital has more than seven stations and they make use of the three robots to deliver messages and paperworks to and from each of them.

The Dutch Government has awarded Swedish energy firm Vattenfall to build the twin Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farms in the North Sea.

Reports suggest each wind farm, which will be built by 2020 will sit about 14 miles off the Dutch coast and generate around 350 megawatts. And with this, they will provide enough renewable energy to power more than 1.3 million homes.

The news follows the zero-subsidy offshore wind tender in Germany last year that was a landmark for the industry. The German offshore tender was the first to attract zero subsidy winning bids. But the projects will only be built in 2024-25 – after Hollandse Kust Zuid is completed.

“Wind energy is showing again and again that it can deliver ever more capacity for less cash. That’s the key message other governments should take from this: they should revise their ambition upwards in their national energy plans and offshore wind is a great way to help them do this.”

It quite surprising to see Amazon Boss Bezos play ping-pong with a robot in a conference. For Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, it seems like it’s amusing to go to a conference and commune with robots.

Jeff on Monday took a walk with a Boston Dynamics robot dog Mars conference in California. On Tuesday, he took it to a more serious level by playing ping-pong with a large piece of metal machine holding a red bat.

A video footage by the MIT technology shows Jeff Bezos showing his pong skills against a robot.

Jeff is quite good and confident in the game, he showed some backhand skills and that was great for a man of his Pedigree.

Many people out there will be wondering if this is going to be a sign of robots taking over human’s role in the company. But for me, it’s really interesting to see that the CEO of America’s second biggest company can still offer a display of modesty.

A company called General Electric has begun testing the world’s largest jet engine in flight trials, the company said on Wednesday.

A special Boeing 747 test aircraft flew on Tuesday from Victorville, California, with the new E9X engine mounted under its left wing, dwarfing the plane’s three other engines.

The flight will mark the beginning of a flight-test campaign scheduled to last for several months, before the aircraft itself takes to the skies in the first quarter of next year.

During Tuesday’s flight, Engineers completed their test list and ensured that the key characteristics were working properly, General Electric said in a statement confirming the flight.

The huge Powerplant – as wide and tall as the fuselage of a Boeing 737 – is being built for the latest version of Boeing Co’s long-haul 777, the 777X, which is due to enter service in 2020.

Apple needs these betas more than ever for iOS 12, as it’s been plagued with so many iOS 11 problems. The company is unlikely to stop issuing the unfinished software since it values this feedback from so many users.

The actual iOS 12 release date for everyone else is expected to be in September, right as the iPhone 9 and maybe the iPhone X2 launch. But Wikipedia itself has had its share of credibility issues, as the service lets anyone edit its content, whether that person is a pedigreed expert or an online troll. Though Wikipedia has tried to sort the issue out by restricting edits on high-profile or controversial pages – it isn’t immune from hoaxes and its own conspiracy theories.



In a statement on Wednesday, YouTube said they will include other third party sources beside just Wikipedia though YouTube is yet to identify any. The company that manages Wikipedia on Wednesday said that it has no formal relationship with YouTube but will happily welcome the use of Wikipedia resources on YouTube.

Apple Inc have taken over Digital magazine distributor Texture which is described as a Netflix of magazines. to extend its subscription services far beyond music and online storage.



The deal was announced on Monday and that puts the smartphone giant company-Apple in control of the service. Digital magazine distributor Texture reportedly allows readers to scale over articles in more than 200 magazines for just 10Usd per month.



Comparing the company to Netflix which boasts 55 million subscribers in the US alone, I think it not as popular as Netflix but may anytime any day become a very big addition to Apple. The company is yet to disclose how many subscribers it has, but CEO John Loughlin said in an interview back in 2016 that the number of subscribers are in the “hundreds of thousands”- which means that there must have been a major increment in the number of subscribers today.

Apple’s Senior Vice President, Eddy Cue said on Monday the company have committed to quality news content and journalism from reliable sources around the world and making use of beautifully designed magazines to engage stories to users.

Unlike most Apple products, Texture will be available on devices powered by Google’s Android software and also in the iPhone and iPad.

Texture is expected to join a list of Apple subscription options that are mastered by the company’s music-streaming service, which already has over 37 million subscribers.

Purchasing of additional storage in iCloud services will be available to user who have exceeded the maximum free limit of 5 gigabytes.

The magazine distributor had been owned by investors which includes Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, Rogers Media and KKR before Apple took over.

French President Emmanuel Macron have pledged 700 millions Euros for solar projects in developing countries, as leaders from all part of the met in India on sunday to promote investment in renewable energy.

Remember that Macron, last December warned that the global shift to a green energy future was too slow, and also made it clear that France would generate an extra $861.5m through loans and donations by 2022 for solar projects in emerging economies.
France had already committed more that $350 million to the initiative when it joined forces with India to form a global alliance in 2015 to unlock cash for solar projects in sunny yet poor nations.



India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has committed to reducing India’s sizeable carbon footprint through a massive growth in renewable energy ,said it was vital that other nations were not left out.

“We have to make sure that a better and cost-effective solar technology is available to all,” Modi told investors and world leaders from about 20 mainly African nations.

According to the latest report ,India which is the one of the worlds largest polluters , is undergoing spectacular growth in its solar sector and is on track to become one of the world’s largest clean energy markets.
Back in 2015, India pledged at the Paris climate summit to source at least 40 percent of its energy from renewables by 2030, mainly via solar.

Ex-US president Barack Obama is reportedly in talks with the US-based streaming service magnate Netflix to produce a series of exclusive shows along with his wife Michelle, the New York Times reported.
From the reports, Obama will not appear on stage to directly respond to his current President Donald Trump but will appear on camera as a moderator on topics that dominated his eight years reign in the White House.

These topics include health care, immigration and climate change. He could also potentially serve as a producer for the program citing inspirational American stories.
The show might also feature Obama wife, Michelle Obama speaking on the same issues she focused on during her time as first lady, such as nutrition.
