PoliticsNo Show At Edo PDP Secretariat As Obaseki Refused To Show Up, Defect On Thursday by divinehand2003(op): 7:36am On Jun 19, 2020
THE long wait for Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki to formally show up at the Edo State secretariat of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ended in a no show on Thursday.

Top members of the party which included the South-South zonal vice-chairman, Chief Emmanuel Ogidi; the state chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemi and a host of others waited in vain for the governor.

Rumours of Governor Obaseki’s defection had been on in the Edo State capital of Benin City for a long time but things took a dramatic turn when news filtered in that the governor was bound for the secretariat of the main opposition party.

Angered over the circumstances surrounding his disqualification from the primary of the party which is scheduled for June 22, the governor had resigned from the APC on Tuesday.

In solidarity with the governor, deputy governor, Phillip Shaibu, had also quit the ruling party but the two men are yet to publicly defect to another party.

At the headquarters located on First East Circular Road, it was a beehive of activities as gaily dressed party supporters who openly discussed the impending visit, thronged to the venue at about 4 pm, waiting for the arrival of the August visitor.

While Obaseki is yet to defect to another party, speculations of his impending defection have been rife even before his resignation as he has been reportedly holding series of clandestine meetings with the top leadership of the PDP in preparation for his move.

Determined efforts to speak with either Ogidi or Aziegbemi proved futile, but a close source who would not want his name in print admitted: “We are waiting for Governor Obaseki to formally show up at our secretariat to join us. Yes, we have been in touch with him. He will join us for sure.”

The long wait eventually ended and the crowd started to disperse at about 6pm when it was announced that the ceremony has been postponed to Friday.

PoliticsJune 21, 2020 Not Feasible For Resumption Of Flights ― FG by divinehand2003(op): 7:00am On Jun 19, 2020
The June 21 date earlier announced for the resumption of domestic flights in Nigeria may not be realistic after all.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Nuhu Musa, dropped this hint while answering questions during the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

Musa on the occasion said categorically that the NCAA will not approve the resumption of flight operations until it gets confirmation that operations can be carried out in a safe and organised atmosphere.

His words: “We never said aviation is going to start definitely on the 21st. We were supposed to put a report back based on what we have and we have some work to do. As such, June 21 is not a feasible date to resume operations.”

While stating that there as a lot of work to be done before operations can resume in the aviation sector, Musa added: “Prior to this mandate from the presidential task force, the regulatory body, NCAA had developed advisory circulars distributed to the different sectors of the industry.

“These circulars required all sectors of industry to present a restart plan to the regulatory body for approval. A lot of service providers have provided their restart plans and these restart plans are to be reviewed by the civil aviation authority.

“When we review those documents, if we are happy with those documents, then we will go to each individual organisation to verify what they have given as their restart plan. Some provided inadequate documents and their documents were sent back to them.

“Significant progress has been made, but there is still a lot of work to be done. The aviation system is a very complex system and this system has been compounded with the public healthcare concept which a lot of them, the aviation system is not used to implementing.”

…Blasts security agencies, says their attitude lackadaisical

…Prof Abdullahi, Baba – Ahmed not fit to speak for northern elders – BMO

…Do more to address violence, killings in Nigeria, U.S Mission tells FG

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar 111, yesterday told the Federal Government that Nigerians have a right to express their feelings over the spate of killings in the country, especially in the north.

The JNI also blasted security agencies over what he described as lackadaisical attitude in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes in the country, saying they seemed to be overwhelmed by the problem.

Its statement came against the backdrop of attacks on the convener of Northern Elders Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi and some Arewa youth groups who expressed reservations over government’s inability to stop the orgy of killings in the north earlier this week.

JNI said: JNI’s position was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, titled ‘’Nigeria’s perilous security challenge: Enough of condemnations, government must take decisive action, stop the rhetoric.”

The statement read: “The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, under the leadership of His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and JNI’s President-General, is in utter shockwave over the unfortunate repeated incidents of loss of precious lives and wanton destruction of property arising from well-coordinated attacks of armed bandits, Boko Haram terrorist groups and rapists.

“These repeated calamitous scenarios would have been avoided had the government risen to the occasion. We, nonetheless, as always, condemn the repeated brutal acts in their entirety; especially the lackadaisical attitude of relevant security agencies that seemed to be overwhelmed, despite repeated calls by concerned and well-meaning Nigerians for a decisive action.

What govt should do

‘’We implore government to take all genuine calls, concerns so raised and recommendations proffered so far, even from perceived and/or alleged antagonists in good fate, in order to move the country on the path of glory – human security, as development in whatever guise, is utterly incomplete without security.

‘’Government should also note that citizens have a right to be listened to, over their feelings on insecurity challenge in Nigeria. The repeated massacres of people, as well as the senseless burning of houses and livestock that do ensue in Borno, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger states and, indeed, other states such as Adamawa, Kaduna and Taraba, should give governments and its functionaries at both federal and state levels sleepless nights.

‘’By now, an instantaneous pronouncement, followed by robust actions should have been made by the government of the day, not verbal warnings and condemnations dished out to the perpetrators of the murderous acts.

‘’JNI also notes with dismay the lack of symbolic gestures to affected communities by those in authorities. They remain in their comfort zones as their subjects are subjected to arson and killings of the highest degree.

‘’This has thrown the affected areas into despair and the bandits are emboldened, seeing that the government seems not much bothered, resulting from its action about the plight of the people so affected.

‘’We are, however, not oblivious of the fact that security matters are not often for public consumption, but not in perilous situations. Citizens’ confidence need to be strengthened, with resounding reassurances. Government should not reduce itself to just issuing light press statements on security upheavals.

“As stakeholders, we strongly believe that the repeated killings are blameworthy, and no one found culpable in this gross act of negligence should be spared. In all honesty, all erring personnel would have been dealt with decisively by now or they themselves should have honorably resigned, as oftentimes seen in other climes.

BMO raps Abdulahi, Baba Ahmed

Also yesterday, the Buhari Media Organisation, BMO, said leader of Northern Elders Forum, NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi and Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, were not fit to speak for elders in the north.

The group was reacting to NEF’s claim that President Muhammadu Buhari had not done enough to curtail the high level of insecurity in the north, other than issue condemnations after innocent people had been slaughtered.

But in a statement signed by the chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, and Secretary, Cassidy Maduekwe, the BMO said: “They masquerade as a Forum of Northern Elders but have no business pretending to speak for northern interests, neither are they fit for such representation.

“The two men are spent politicians; they have neither the character nor mandate to lead anybody. They are simply craving for attention by playing politics with very serious issues.’’

It alleged that NEF, as currently constituted, was an extension of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, saying “what we have there is a group of politicians who are craving attention after losing out in the 2019 election.

“These two men, who parade themselves as NEF, are members of the PDP who have been exiled from the political space, courtesy the votes of Nigerians.

“They have been shown a red card. They do not have the interests of the north at heart. What we see them pursuing with their ramblings in the media is selfish interest.

US tasks FG on killings

The US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo in a statement on the twitter handle of the U.S Mission, Nigeria @USEmbassyAbuja, also condemned the recent killings of a pastor and his pregnant wife in Taraba State.

The statement read: “We condemn the recent/ senseless and/ brazen killings of civilians in northern Nigeria. In recent weeks, suspected/ ISIS West Africa/ militants launched multiple attacks in Borno State, killing more than 120 civilians, including women, children, and the elderly.

“On June 9, unidentified armed bandits attacked a village in Katsina State, killing dozens. These horrific crimes follow the shooting of a pastor and his pregnant wife on June 1 and the killing of an imam, local village head, and several civilians on June 5 in the course of inter-communal violence in Taraba State.

“Tens of thousands of civilians have lost their lives in Nigeria in recent years to violent attacks by terrorist groups or criminal gangs, in inter-communal violence, or due to their religious beliefs.

“The United States calls on the government of Nigeria to do more to strengthen ongoing efforts to address this violence, hold those responsible accountable and protect civilians.”

According to him: “The NWC also noted that Chief Victor Giadom had resigned to contest as Deputy Governor of the party in the last election and that the party has no recollection that the South-South zone of the party had re-presented him.

“Therefore, the NWC has now asked the South-South zonal chapter of the party to present a member of the party to fill this position.”

Uzodinma named Edo primary election c’ttee chair

The NWC also named a seven-member primary election committee for Edo State, headed by Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma. According to Eta, Professor Mustapha Bello would serve as the Chairman of the Appeal Committee for the primary election. While the Edo state Governorship Primary Election has been scheduled for Monday June 22, 2020, the Election Appeal is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

Members and the primary election committee are Sen. Ajibola Bashiru (Secretary), Alh. Abdullahi Abass, Hon. Ibrahim Sabo, Hon. Ocho Obioma, Hajia Amina Lantana Muhammed and Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye. Other members of the Primary Election Appeal Committee are Dr. Kayode Ajulo (Secretary), Hon. Umar Ahmed, Nasiru Ibrahim Junju and Hon. Rasaq Mahmud Bamu.

Court adjourns sitting on suit challenging Ize-Iyamu’s membership of APC

The high court sitting in Benin City yesterday, adjourned hearing till Friday, June 19, in the suit seeking to restrain the All Progressives Congress (APC) from recognizing Osagie Ize-Iyamu as an aspirant in the party’s governorship primary election scheduled for June 22, 2020.

Presiding judge, Justice Emmanuel Ahamioje gave the defendants 24 hours to file their response, subsequently adjourned till June 19.

The court had earlier refused to grant ex-parte application seeking to restrain the APC from recognizing Ize-Iyamu as an aspirant in the party’s governorship primary election scheduled for June 22, 2020.

The suit is instituted by Kenneth Asekomhe, state deputy chairman of the party, Benjamin Oghumu, Mathew Ogbebor and Unweni Nosa and they are challenging the membership waiver granted to Ize-Iyamu by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC.

Obazee steps down for Ize-Iyamu

The chances of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the APC governorship primary in Edo received a boost yesterday as a fellow aspirant and former chairman of Oredo Local Government Area Chairman, Mr. Osaro Obazee, stepped down for him.

Obazee, who was screened and cleared for the primary at the APC, pledged to give his complete support to Ize-Iyamu, leaving Dr Pius Odubu as the only contender against Ize-Iyamu.

How Obaseki sponsored opposition parties against us — APC

Meanwhile, faction of Edo APC loyal to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday, alleged that Governor Obaseki sponsored some opposition parties in the last general election, a reason it claimed contributed to the opposition winning two of the three Senate seats, adding that the ease with which he fused into the opposition was an indication that he was never for the APC.

Addressing a press conference at its secretariat, factional chairman of the party, Col David Imuse (retd) said: “Obaseki’s sins are legion; he has kept 14 members-elect of the House of Assembly out, he funded the long drawn-out but aborted attempt to unseat the national chairman. This drama is still playing out in the court as we speak and was reflected in the Appeal of Court ruling that was delivered yesterday (Tuesday).

“There is credible evidence that Obaseki worked against APC by funding candidates of the opposition party in the House of Assembly elections.

“He funded opposition parties in neighbouring states and in so doing, helped truncate electoral fortunes of our party. He also worked against our party in the last presidential and National National Assembly elections. This is evidenced by the fact that two of the three senators from Edo State belong to the opposition.”

Contacted for reaction, Governor Obaseki’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, simply said “No comment.”

Appeal Court ruling

On the Appeal Court ruling, Imuse said: “It is our carefully considered opinion that the Appeal Court misdirected itself. By the tone and wording of the judgement, one was left wondering if the Appeal Court has become a court of first instance. We therefore urge our members to remain calm, resolute and keep faith with the leadership of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.’’

Oshiomhole, EPM fighting Obaseki for selfish reasons

Special Assistant to Obaseki on Digital Media, Nosakhare Eguagie said that Oshiomhole is joining forces with retrogressive forces to fight Obaseki because the governor has surpassed his record of achievements of eight years in less than four years.

According to him, Obaseki’s achievements have awoken the minds of Edo people to the realization that Oshiomhole deceived them all through his tenure with media jamboree. He said: “Comrade Oshiomhole is not happy that within a short time, Governor Obaseki has been able to achieve what he failed to do in eight years which is the eradication of thuggery and building of human capacity with his investment in human capacity training programmes,” he said.

I’m undecided on defection — Edo Speaker

However, expected defections of political office-holders with Governor Godwin Obaseki, yesterday, did not take off as Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Francis Okiye, said he was yet to decide on whether or not to leave the All Progressives Congress, APC, like Obaseki. He said the governor is yet to formally inform him of his resignation from the APC but that he has not considered resigning from the ruling party.

Victor Giadom
He said: “To the best of my knowledge, a governor without a party has not committed an offence that we would begin to raise questions within the polity. He enjoys the constitutional rights to resign from one party to join another. It is not in contradiction to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, leader of Ovia South West Local Government Area of the state, Robert Fiyes and his deputy, Godwin Ekhator, and three councillors out of 10 have been removed for allegedly not supporting Obaseki.

But when contacted, the chairman of the council, Hon Destiny Enaulele denied allegation of such development.

He said “I am not aware of such, we operate independent arms of government but I have been informed that I have a letter from the legislative arm which I have not even seen.”

IPAC caution youths

Chairman of Edo State Inter- Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Comrade Ogbaloi Kelly Stephen, has called on the Edo electorate not to allow themselves to be used by political power seekers in the state.

He described the present political drama in the state as mockery of democracy, adding that other registered political parties in Nigeria should learn from what is happening in APC, stressing that APC as the ruling party has failed Nigeria abysmally in all areas of human development.

Hold primaries in 10 days, INEC tells 15 political parties

Meanwhile, INEC has asked the 15 political parties participating in the September 19 governorship election in Edo State to ensure that their primary elections are conducted within the next 10 days as earlier indicated in their letters to the commission. INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu gave the charge yesterday in Abuja during the second virtual meeting of the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCES.

Yakubu said: “Turning to the Edo governorship election, all political parties interested in fielding candidates for the election are reminded that they must conclude their primaries for the nomination of candidates in the next 10 days. The deadline is Saturday 27th June 2020. I must stress that the date is firm and fixed. There will be no extension of the deadline. While the conduct of primaries and nomination of candidates will be the sole responsibility of political parties, our officials will monitor the primaries as required by law.

“Already, the Commission has published the date and mode of primaries for each of the 15 political parties that indicated their intention to participate in the election.

“Similarly, there will be no extension of time for political parties that fail to submit the names and other details of the candidates that emerge from their primaries using the dedicated portal created by the Commission. For emphasis, the deadline is 6:00pm on Monday 29th June 2020.”

…Obaseki meets Secondus, PDP govs

THE leadership crisis in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday, took a melodramatic twist as three persons, within three hours, laid claim to national chairmanship of the party, in an acting capacity.

This happened few hours after the Court of Appeal upheld the lower court’s ruling suspending Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as APC national chairman on Tuesday.

The three acting chairmen are Deputy National Chairman, South, Senator Abiola Ajimobi; Deputy National Secretary of the party, Chief Victor Giadom, and National Vice Chairman, South-South, Ntufam Hilliard Eta. As expected, emergence of the three acting chairmen, who all started by issuing conflicting orders, could hurt the party’s June 22 governorship primaries in Edo as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, gave parties no more than 10 days to conduct their primaries in Edo.

Obaseki meets Secondus, PDP govs

There were speculations yesterday that Obaseki is hesitant about reversing his resignation from the APC.

However, Obaseki, who said in his twitter handle that he had not defected to any party, met with PDP leaders and governors to firm-up his move into the opposition party. The high-wire parley was ongong at press time.

Ajimobi first emerged acting chairman

Relying on Section 14(2)(iii) of the APC Constitution 2014 (as amended) the National Working Committee, NWC, had named Ajimobi as acting national chairman on Tuesday night but it was not until Wednesday morning that a statement credited to him emerged, indicating that he had assumed office by that morning.

Section 14(2) of the APC Constitution (2014 as amended) stipulates the duties of a Deputy National Chairman of the party, among which is to assist the National Chairman in the discharge of his duties.

In Section 14(2)(iii), the constitution states that the “Deputy National Chairman shall act as the National Chairman in the absence of the National Chairman from his zone.”

On Wednesday morning, Special Adviser, Communication and Strategy, to the former Oyo State Governor, Bolaji Tunji, said his principal had assumed the reins of leadership following the order of the Court of Appeal affirming Oshiomhole’s suspension.

Giadom declares self acting chair, voids Obaseki’s disqualification

Barely an hour later, Deputy National Secretary of the party, Chief Victor Giadom, announced a take-over of party affairs, declaring as invalid all processes which led to the disqualification of Governor Godwin Obaseki from the June 22 APC primary election in Edo State.

Giadom, who arrived the secretariat at about 10am with a retinue of security aides, premised his action on Tuesday’s judgement of the Court of Appeal.

He was flanked by Deputy National Organizing Secretary of the party, Muhammad Sani Ibrahim, a non-member of the NWC, who has been seeking to oust the National Organizing Secretary, Emma Ibediro.

Security agents had earlier taken charge of the secretariat gate, screening staff, journalists and visitors going into the premises. Hours later, security was relaxed following announcement of Hilliard Eta by the NWC.

Giadom said: “Consequently, I bring to your notice that on the 16th of March 2020, Hon. Justice S.U. Bature in suit no FCT/HC/M/6447/2020 had ordered that, with the earlier suspension of Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, I, Chief Victor Giadom should act as National Chairman of our great party. That order could not be immediately effected at that time because of the temporary reprieve Adams Oshiomhole got from the Court of Appeal on the same date.

However, having removed the temporary reprieve yesterday by the Court of Appeal, considering the fact that we cannot allow for a vacuum, I most humbly inform you that I have assumed office as Acting National Chairman of our great party in compliance with the order of the court.

“I, therefore, most humbly solicit the support of the entire leadership and members of our great party in achieving this very important responsibility. I want to assure all party members that the All Progressives Congress will obey court orders/judgements so as to bring sanity to our great party. Time for selective compliance with court orders and judgements is over.

“Our party, the All Progressives Congress, will no longer allow local quests for the control of power to influence our decisions. As your Acting National Chairman and presiding officer in the NWC, we therefore cancel the decision of the Screening and Appeal Committees of the former chairman of the party on the Edo primaries. This is in strict compliance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that forbids anyone who is interested in a cause to be a judge in that same cause.

Asks aspirants to report for fresh screening

“It is a brazen rape on the rule of law and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the former chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to preside and select committees in respect to the Governorship primaries in Edo State, being a key player in the crisis in that state.

“Whatever role the former chairman was given to play in that process by the APC Constitution, it cannot override the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which governs all of us.

“We, therefore, ask all aspirants in the Governorship primaries to report for fresh screening between today and tomorrow. I call on all aspirants to remain in the All Progressives Congress as we guarantee fairness and justice to all concerned. The schedule and time for each aspirant shall be communicated.

“In addition to the above, the Deputy Organising Secretary of the All Progressive Congress, Hon. Muhammad Sani Ibrahim, shall immediately resume office as the Acting National Organizing Secretary, in compliance with the judgement of the Federal High Court in suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/733/2018, which removed the former National Organising Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Ibediro, since 24th of September 2018. This is to ensure strict compliance with the rule of law,” he said.

NWC backs Hilliard Eta

Moments later and using the same meeting hall of the National Executive Committee, NEC, 16 of the 21 members of the NWC announced the National Vice Chairman, South-South, Ntufam Hilliard Eta, as acting national chairman.

With Oshiomhole out of the equation, the party is supposed to now have 20 NWC members, but the Hilliard Eta tendency has now declared Chief Giadom a persona non grata in the NWC.

The NWC said it met yesterday morning to take the decision, asking Eta to act on behalf of Senator Ajimobi, who is reportedly indisposed.

Those who signed the statement were the National Secretary, Arc. Waziri Bulama; Hilliard Eta, the National Vice-Chairman, South-East, Hon. Emma Eneukwu; National Vice-Chairman, South-West, Pastor Bankole Oluwajana; National Vice-Chairman, North-West, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir; National Vice-Chairman, North Central, Alhaji Suleiman Umar Wambai; National Organizing Secretary, Barr. Emma Ibediro, and the National Legal Adviser, Babatunde John Kwame Ogala.

Others were the National Welfare Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Kabir Masari; National Treasurer, Alhaji Adamu Fanda; National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu; National Financial Secretary, Alhaji Tajudeen Bello; National Auditor, Paul Chukwuma; National Women Leader, Hajia Salamatu Baiwa Umar-Eluma; National Youth Leader, Alhaji Sadiq Abubakar and National Disabled Leader, Misbahu Lawan Didi.

According to Eta, the NWC reaffirms Senator Ajimobi as acting national chairman of the party, but that in his absence, the NWC resolved that he (Eta) should pilot affairs of the party.

Giadom’s seat declared vacant

The Eta-led NWC also declared as vacant the office of the Deputy National Secretary of the party, because Chief Victor Giadom had resigned to participate in the 2019 general elections as running mate to the party’s governorship candidate in Rivers State, Pastor Tonye Cole.

Article 31(1)(iii) of the APC Constitution (2014 as amended) stipulates: “Any party office holder interested in contesting for an elective office (whether party office or office in a general election) shall resign and leave office 30 days prior to the date of nomination or party primary for the office he or she is seeking to contest.”

Eta said as the zonal chairman of the party in South-South, he is not aware that the Zonal Executive Committee, ZEC, had at any time met and re-presented Giadom as their candidate for the office of Deputy National Secretary.

“The President sends condolences to family of the deceased, and management of New Telegraph Newspapers, describing the editor’s death as a collective loss to the media and the nation that he served passionately with his talent.

“The President prays that God will receive the soul of the departed, and comfort all that mourn him,” the statement said.

Oyetola described Bakare’s death as devastating and a great loss not only to his immediate family but also to the journalism profession in Nigeria.

Bakare died on Sunday after a brief illness. He was 51.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, the governor commiserated with Bakare’s family, friends, colleagues, the Journalists’ Hangout (on TVC) family and the management of The New Telegraph Newspapers over the demise of the journalist.

The governor described the late Bakare as a hardworking, talented, cerebral and an accomplished journalist, noting that he would be sorely missed by the media community.

“I received with great shock the passing of Alhaji Waheed Bakare, Editor, Saturday New Telegraph. His death is not only a loss to his family but also to the journalism profession.

“As people who believe in God, we should take it in good faith and give gratitude to God that the late journalist ran a good race and gave a good account of himself as a newsroom leader and gatekeeper…”

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila described Bakare’s death as a sad loss.

The Speaker, who commiserated with the late journalist’s family, the management and staff of the New Telegraph Newspaper, also condoled with the NUC.

He said Nigerian journalism has lost one of its dedicated members, whom he described as a diligent and hardworking individual. The Speaker prayed the Almighty Allah to grant the late Bakare a good resting place.

The Janazah (funeral rites) for the late Bakare was held yesterday at his 22 Ayo Ayinde Street, Ota, Ogun State home. He is survived by a widow, Basirat, four children and an aged mother.

His remains were interred around 1:30 p.m after the prayers.

Family members, friends, and colleagues were on hand to bid him farewell.

Apparently still shocked by the sudden demise of her husband, Mrs Bakare only summoned the courage to acknowledge greetings from sympathisers.

New Telegraph Managing Director Mr Ayo Aminu led the team, which included Editor Ayodele Ojo, from the organisation.

Chairman of Lagos Chapter of Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN), Alhaji Kabir Alabi Garba, former Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Alhaja Sekinah Lawal, Chief Executive Officer, DICOLI Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Kayode Awobadejo also visited the family.

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) described the late Bakare as an ardent journalist of international repute. A statement by Alhaji Femi Abbas on behalf of the NSCIA Media Committee said the late journalist was among the NSCIA Media Ambassadors.

PoliticsRe: Executive Order: Withhold Legislature, Judiciary Cash, Lose Your Allocations, FG by divinehand2003(op):
I foresee trouble in many states in a few years to come. Many Houses of Assembly will start playing the impeachment cards at the slightest provocation by their respective governors.
PoliticsExecutive Order: Withhold Legislature, Judiciary Cash, Lose Your Allocations, FG by divinehand2003(op): 8:33am On May 26, 2020
The federal government has warned that any state government which withholds funds meant for their respective Houses of Assembly and judiciary would get their allocations deducted at source by the Accountant General of the Federation and remitted directly to the affected state organs.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, made the clarification yesterday in further explanation of the Executive Order signed by President Muhammadu Buhari last Friday, giving effect to the commencement of the implementation of the law which he had earlier signed into law last year.

Although some governors are reported to be unhappy with the implementation of the Executive Order, which was passed by the 8th National Assembly and duly assented to by the President, the AGF explained that there was no going back on the matter which had become part of the country’s constitution.

Malami believes that the Presidential action would not only strengthen the two arms of state institutions but would also go a long way in making them more independent and accountable in line with the tenets of democracy.

The AGF pointed out that where any state fails to remit the amount meant for the legislature and the judiciary, the OAGF would by the EO authorize the deduction of the amount from source from the Federation Account by the Accountant General of the Federation.

The AGF said doing so was in compliance with the Article 6 (1) of the EO, which states: “Notwithstanding the provisions of this EO, in the first three years of its implementation, there shall be a special extraordinary capital allocations for the judiciary to undertake capital development of state judiciary complexes, high court complexes, Sharia court of appeal, Customary court of appeal and court complexes of other courts befitting the status of a court.

“The EO provides that the Accountant General of the Federation shall by this order and such other orders, regulations or guidelines as may be issued by the AGF and Minister of Justice, authorize the deduction from source in the course of the Federal Accounts Allocation from the money allocated to any state of the federation that fails to release allocation meant for the state legislature and judiciary in line with financial autonomy.

When pressed on Sunday for reaction to the EO, Chairman of Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, declined to comment on the development, which some of his colleagues have however frowned on, saying the action would lead to weakening their control of the two arms of government hitherto remotely ‘controlled’ by them through cash release or withholding.

It will be recalled that following the stranglehold on the two tiers of government by the respective governors in the country, a Presidential Committee was raised to fashion out strategies and modalities for the implementation of financial autonomy for them in line with the constitution taking into account all other applicable laws, instruments and regulations, which provide for financial autonomy at the state tiers of government.

PoliticsCOVID-19: Inter-state Lockdown Breaks Down by divinehand2003(op): 9:46am On May 24, 2020
Governors cry over FG’s inability to enforce security We will enforce restriction of movement —Police

There is a brewing anxiety over apparent breakdown of the lockdown and restriction of interstate movement of non-essential persons and goods ordered by the Federal Government to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The development has reportedly resulted in the spike of virus cases in some states, particularly Lagos and Ogun and others close to them like Oyo and Osun on a daily basis.

Sunday Tribune’s investigations showed that despite the ban on interstate travels, motor parks are operating unhindered, ferrying passengers across state boundaries at exorbitant prices.

Findings also indicated that the security personnel expected to enforce the order sometimes use their operational vehicles to spirit people across states for a fee.

The nation has, for some time, been battling with the issue of almajirai hidden in trailers used to transport cows and other food items to the Southern part of the country.

But the latest development indicates that movement of people from one state to another, despite an order of the Federal Government to the contrary, is rife all over the country.

Ogun governor voices out frustration over COVID-19 fight

Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in a weekly briefing on the fight against the pandemic in his state released on Friday, lent credence to the crisis occasioned by unhindered movement of people across states.

In the statement, he lamented the rate at which the restriction order was being breached, thereby spiking COVID-19 cases.

“I must say that the level of compliance with the laid-down precautionary measures in the fight against COVID-19 is not yet at the desired level. Some people still flagrantly flout the Presidential ban on inter-State travel for non-essential services and the daily night curfew.

“For example, four people from Kotangora, Niger State, were intercepted right in front of the Governor’s Office, here at Abeokuta on Monday, this week. What is worrisome is how they managed to beat all the security barricades along the state borders and within the states that they passed through before getting into our dear State.

“Whilst we are battling with internal migration, the immigrants from outside the country through our international land borders have also not given up, despite the closure of international borders. Nineteen (19) nationals from Togo and Ivory-Coast were intercepted after crossing into Ogun State, nay Nigeria through illegal land border routes on Wednesday. They are being quarantined at Idi-Iroko, pending repatriation back to their countries,” the governor said, disclosing that the flagrant violation of the order extended to the use of face mask and number of passengers carried by motorists.

It will be recalled that the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) had in February voiced out similar frustration arising from failure of security agencies to enforce the inter-state restriction order.

How we bribe our way through lockdown –Oyo transporter

A public transporter at Ojoo motor park in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, who spoke with Sunday Tribune anonymously on Saturday, explained that armed with the right price, he would convey passengers to any part of the country.

It was learnt from the park, which was as busy as it used to be on Saturday that travelling to Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, would cost N2,000 by car or N1,500 by bus.

“The price has to increase, because if we run into the security people, we have to pay them a fare on each of the passenger, although it is not every time that you see them till you get to your destination,” he explained.

At the Total Filling Station garage, Shasha junction, Ibadan, there were standby buses and cars loading passengers to Sokoto Saturday afternoon. The park operators told Sunday Tribune undercover reporter that it would cost N6,500 to go by bus, while it would be N8,500 by car, adding that they preferred traveling by night.

At a popular bus terminal at Challenge in Ibadan, transporters could be seen walking around, keeping watch on people who might be looking for a way out of the state. Once identified, the prospective traveller is booked and told to wait till the bus on queue – which is not parked in sight supposedly for the fear of law enforcement authorities – is full.

Sunday Tribune learnt that a trip to Lagos could cost around N2,000 from challenge, while it could be about N3,000 by car.

According to a transporter who spoke on condition of anonymity, going by bus was riskier than going by car, “because a car is sure to get into Lagos, while a bus is a 50-50 gamble. Depending on the mood of the security personnel at the state’s border, passengers could be allowed or denied entry. However, a car would be allowed to enter Lagos with a good excuse.

“We wish to continue to find a way to make a living and there are people who also insist that the lockdown isn’t for them, because they must do business. And this is Nigeria; even if it will be tough, we will continue to find a way around things.”

Despite the inconvenience, travelling is possible in Kwara too

Sunday Tribune findings also showed that interstate travelling during the lockdown period caused by the pandemic is exploitative, costly, inconvenient, but possible.

Reports have it that some of the business people who had to travel from Ilorin, Kwara State capital, to Ibadan during the lockdown experienced unpalatable journey. Those interviewed cited alleged exploitation by security agents.

“Drivers had to pass through bush paths, farms and villages to beat the security people when the lockdown start, because they are actually chasing vehicles back to where they were coming from.

“Later, they were collecting as much as N500 upwards, depending on the goods you carry in the vehicle. Passenger vehicles have no serious problems, as long as you settle,” one of the traders plying Ilorin – Ibadan route said.

Another respondent, who lamented over high cost of transportation caused by the lockdown said bus fare to Ilorin from Ibadan used to attract N1,200, but had been increased to N1,500, while car fare was hiked from N1,500 to between N2,000 and N2,500.

“The explanation they gave for the hike is that they had to settle the security people at every road block. Meanwhile, the loading is not done at the regular motor parks to avoid possible sanction,” she said.

A traveler who just traveled from Kaduna to IIorin said he only had to contend with hiked fare to make the trip, adding that the driver was settling the security agents on the way for easy passage.
“As against N5,050, the transport fare was increased to N8,050. You know now,” he said.

Abuja travellers moving, but paying heavily

Reports from Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) also have it that as lockdown across the country continues, persons who desperately need to travel from Abuja to various parts of the country are paying heavily.

Meanwhile, the official motor park in Kubwa is closed, but private commuters loiter around the park waiting for people who might come to make enquiries about travelling from the park.

When Sunday Tribune visited the park, about six men approached the reporter asking which state he wanted to travel to. All the men had different cars and buses parked within.

After much persuasion, the reporter followed one of the men to their office where he made enquiries about cost of travelling outside the FCT.

One of the managers of the transport companies, Chuks Peter, told Sunday Tribune that they charged N15,000 per person to Lagos.

It will be recalled that before the pandemic outbreak, passengers were charged between N8,000 and N10,000 to travel to Lagos from Abuja.

Also, it cost each passenger going to Enugu from Abuja N13,000 now. Before lockdown, with N5,000, a traveler could get to Enugu.

However, the transport company told Sunday Tribune that they found it difficult to convey passengers to Port-Harcourt and that what they do is to stop at Owerri, while the passengers look for local taxicabs to find their way into Port-Harcourt.

CrimeMan Kills Wife’s Lover, Cut Off His Penis •family Demands Justice by divinehand2003(op): 9:58am On May 23, 2020
THE family of a 55-year-old man, Henry Obatenuh, a trado-medical doctor, has demanded justice for the murder of their father.

Obatenuh was killed and his penis cut off allegedly by one Collins Adodokome and his son in Masaka, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Adodokome had accused the deceased of sleeping with his wife.

The suspect, who is now in custody alongside two accomplices, his son and security guard, at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Nasarawa State police command in Lafia, had on Wednesday, in Angwan Tiv, Masaka, hacked Obatenuh to death and cut off his manhood for allegedly having an affair with his wife, Evelyn.

It was gathered that Adodokome had reported Obatenuh to the police and eventually taken him to court some years ago and the deceased was kept in custody for some weeks before being released and asked to sign an undertaken to desist from having any further affair with Evelyn.

According to police sources, the suspect, who is said to be a friend to the victim, confessed to the crime, alleging that his son caught the deceased having sexual intercourse with his wife on his matrimonial bed.

“The wife escaped and Adodokome’s son engaged the late Obatenuh in a fight and he eventually killed him. He later chopped his penis off out of anger,” said one of the sources.

The source disclosed further that Adodokome claimed that the killing had been done before he arrived at the scene and he promptly walked into Masaka Police Station to report the matter.

He said the body of the victim was moved to Uke General Hospital mortuary, even as the police continue with investigation.

But the family of the victim is not convinced with the explanation on the cause of his death.

They are pleading for in-depth investigation by the police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of their father.

Speaking to Saturday Tribune at Obatenuh’s residence in Angwan Tiv in Masaka, the first son of the deceased, Courage Obatenuh, said the family was asking for justice in the murder of their father who he claimed was set up and killed by Adodokome and his son.

“We vehemently speak against the perpetrators of this heinous act and we demand a very thorough investigation by the police so that justice will be truly served,” he said.

Courage, who said was with his father the night before the incident, explained that at about 9.00 p.m., as he was about to serve his father food, he quickly went out after receiving a call.

“As I was about to serve him food, I met him on the phone. He then told me he was going out to get something. He left without eating. I waited for hours for him to return until I slept off,” he stated.

Courage said that the next day, he sensed that something was amiss when he discovered that his father did not return home and his phone line was not connecting. He said as he was about to leave the house to search for his dad two policemen met him outside the house and asked if he was Courage.

He said on confirming his identity to them, they told him to come with them to the station and on arrival at the Masaka Division Police Station, he saw his father lying face down in a pool of blood with a machete cut.

According to him, no immediate explanation was offered as to the cause of his father’s death.
Courage, who was flanked by other relatives and friends of the victim, accused the suspects of trying to use the police to justify the killing of his father.

“The same police that are charged with protecting the citizens of the country are trying to twist the matter. Our questions are: where is the adulterous woman they claimed they caught my father having sex with? How come she escaped and my father was caught and brutally killed and his manhood cut off? Did the woman escape naked, because they claimed they were caught in the act?

“Where is his phone for us to verify the last call he received before leaving the house and eventually getting murdered? This and many more questions we demand answers to.

“Nothing should be swept under the carpet. We demand justice. We also want the perpetrators to be brought to book. We are begging the police to unravel the truth of this matter and see to it that justice is served,” he said.

When our correspondent visited the home of Mr Adodokome within the same axis, he met a young man who told him that Evelyn was still on the run.

According to the man, the woman is taking refuge in her daughter’s house at a location in Mararaba Karu.

Efforts to get her number were futile and calls put through to her daughter’s phone line were not answered.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nansel Rahmnan, who confirmed the development to Saturday Tribune, said the suspects were in custody.

Christianity EtcIs There No Balm In Gilead? - By Bishop David Oyedepo by divinehand2003(op): 8:33am On May 17, 2020
Welcome to another exciting week! I hope you were blessed by last week teaching. This week, we shall focus on: Is There No Balm in Gilead?

We discover from Scriptures that health stands out as one of the greatest assets in life. When a man’s health is challenged, everything he has loses value. A wise man once said, ‘Health is wealth’. Moreover, life at its best will be theoretical without health. As it is written, Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered (Jeremiah 8:22). In the world today, healthcare is one of the costliest services; however, God has a full healthcare package for His children. The Bible says, Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth (3 John 1:2). Jesus Christ paid the price for our total health. That is, He shed His Blood for the remission of our sins and restoration of our health and vitality (1 Corinthians 6:20; 1 Peter 2:24). Furthermore, by redemption, we have been repositioned above all principalities and powers, who are the oppressors of our bodies. Therefore, sicknesses and diseases are not permitted to torment our bodies (Ephesians 1:20-21, 2:6; Colossians 1:13). Moreover, the Bible says, Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:4-5; see also Matthew 8:17). Therefore, Jesus is not just the Saviour of our souls but also our bodies (Ephesians 5:23). However, many have received Jesus as Lord and Saviour but not as their Healer. Until we receive Him consciously as our Healer, our health challenges will continue. For instance, we are told that the woman with the issue of blood in the Bible suffered in the hands of physicians for twelve years without a cure until she met Jesus and she was healed instantly (Mark 5: 25-29). Also, King Asa was diseased in his feet and according to scriptures, he sought not the Lord but resorted to consulting physicians and he died in that sickness (2 Chronicles 16: 12).

We must understand that Jesus is the ultimate in our quest for health as He offers free healthcare without side effects and does not refer any case to anyone. He has authority over all manner of sicknesses and diseases and specialises in healing everyone (Matthew 12:14-15; Mark 10:27). No wonder He introduced Himself in scriptures as the Great Physician. It is written, But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick… (Matthew 9:12). Just as doctors have prescriptions for certain illnesses, Jesus, the Great Physician, also has His prescriptions for our total health. While Jesus is the Great Physician, the revelation of the Word is His one of the great prescriptions for our total health (Proverbs 4:20-22; John 8:32, 36). God’s Word is the Balm in Gilead and it is the medication for our healing, health and wholeness. God’s Word contains healing virtues that impacts on every organ in our bodies and turns our health challenges into testimonies.

In conclusion, the restoration of our health draws on the revelation of the truth from God’s Word. That is, it takes the revelation (light) of the Word to be free from the harassment of sicknesses and diseases. There is no healing that took place in the Bible outside the Word of God. It is an all-purpose drug for the healing of any ailment! Remember that every attack of sickness and disease are operations of the powers of darkness but when we access the light of God through His Word, we conquer without sweat. This is because the dominion of light over darkness is instant and unquestionable. That is why every outbreak of revelation guarantees supernatural healing and instant restoration of our health (Job 33:21-25; Isaiah 58:8, John 1:5). Thus, when we look to the Great Physician and subscribe to His great prescription, our health issues are turned to testimonies. However, this can only be possible when you are born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me! Now, I know I am born again! HealthCOVID-19: Lagos Begins Chloroquine Clinical Trial This Week by divinehand2003(op): 8:18am On May 17, 2020
The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, has said the state will this week commence the clinical trial treatment of COVID-19 using chloroquine as approved by NAFDAC.

The state, which is the epicentre of the virus in the country, had previously disclosed plans to carry out the chloroquine clinical trial.

Omotoso, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH on Saturday, said, “We are ready for the chloroquine clinical trial because we have just secured all the approvals. The documentation has also been completed. Those that will be used for the trials are ready too. By next week we should be ready for the trial.

“Also, Lagos got a supply of additional 20,000 testing kits, although we were expecting 40,000. It means that the testing will increase now.”

In a related development, a COVID-19 patient was successfully delivered of a baby boy at the Gbagada Isolation Centre in Lagos on Saturday.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, said the delivery of the baby through a caesarean was another pointer that the state’s strategy in combating the virus was working and yielding the desired results. “Both mother and baby are doing well,” he added.

The governor also announced that 67 more patients, comprising 22 females and 45 males including three foreign nationals; two Indians and a Chinese were discharged from four isolation centres in the state on Saturday.

“The patients; 24 from the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba; 22 from Onikan; 11 from Agidingbi; two from Lekki and eight from Lagos University Teaching Hospital isolation centres were discharged having tested negative for COVID-19 in two consecutive readings.”

While commending the dedication of health workers in the state, he said the number of patients successfully managed and discharged from isolation facilities in the state had increased to 608.

He urged the populace to adhere strictly to all safety advisories being the only way to break the chain of the transmission.
