Two clerics, Monsignor Gabriel Osu and Imam Shuaib Abdullahi, have jointly advised the Federal Government never to change the name, Nigeria, which had been in use for some 100 years ago. The clerics who spoke in Lagos on Wednesday, noted that a name change was not what Nigerians needed now, but how their challenges would be addressed. Prof. Tekena Tamuno, Chairman, Centenary Committee, had recommended that the name Nigeria be changed to ‘Commonwealth of Nigeria.' According to Tamuno, the change must take effect from the 1 Jan. 2014, when the country will be marking the 100th anniversary, following the amalgamation of its northern and southern protectorates by the British in 1914. Tamuna, an Emeritus Professor, made his call at an annual lecture of the Nigeria Academy of Letters, organised to mark the nation’s centenary anniversary. Osu, who is also the Director of Communication, Catholic Diocese of Lagos, said that the government should address the challenges in the country rather than attempting to spend money on a name change. “Why should Nigeria’s name be changed? Is the change our problem? Our problem is hunger, poverty, no water, no electricity, high rate of unemployment and so on. “Our name is very good, the problem is human beings that are Nigerians; they should not spend billions again in changing names, while the masses are living in abject poverty and dying of hunger, “ he said. Osu said that the billions of naira the government would spend in changing the country’s name could be used to better the lives of Nigerians. He advised the Federal Government not to consider such recommendation, saying, “it was needless“. On his part, Abdullahi, Executive Director, Zakat and Fadaqat Foundation, said that it would be irrelevant changing the name Nigeria as there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Abdullahi said that it was the managers and leaders of the country Nigeria that needed a positive change and transformation. “There is nothing wrong with the name Nigeria, but there is something wrong with the leaders of Nigeria. “The name Nigeria is our name, our brand and has become part and parcel of our lives. All we need is to improve on our dented image in terms of positive change in the style of leadership and total re-branding, “ he said. He, however, advised government to find solutions to numerous problems confronting Nigerians rather than thinking of a name change. grafikii: The leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday visited the leader of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and former head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari, in Kaduna where the duo engaged in a series of discussions. And so what? Are we now running a reality show on them? Pls tell us when they go to the toilet or the mosque |
tim107: It is clear that without electricity there can be no industrial development and all those grand visions of becoming one of the world's leading economies by 2020 cannot be relaised. For where? That is why we must begin to look for alternative means of power generation, especially for small scale industries, the engine room of development. Reliance on govt has to be very minimal in this sector. In the north, air turbines wud work well while in the south biomass can serve. Solar can work on either side of the divide. However besides all these, I am certain that there are other undiscovered cheaper and sustainable sources of power generation (even @ large scale) that God in His mercies will soon reveal to us. Thanks |
Abraham Ojo: Please anybody with any ideal when futa post ume form will be out for sale?Stop derailing the thread. Go post it somewhere else.I stll don't know why people do that. |
PasNet: Inverters, Solars systems, wind V systems. gas turbines etc are all alternative to energy (Power), it is just like switching from PHCN to your generator. so if u install an inverter system in ur house, then it shuld reduce drastically the rate at which you consume ur pre-paid usage, it will never increase it.You are misconstruing his question. The guy will only use inverter when PHCN strikes. While would he be using inverter when the PHCN is on? And it is with PHCN that the inverter can be recharged. More so, it is only when PHCN is on that the electricity card reads. You just wan sell market sha. |
I think it would it will increase your bills eventually. This is because the inverter uses electricity (PHCN) to recharge the batteries. I currently use a 24v/2kva inverter (mercury) and I know the pressure it exacts on my generator when I have to use it. I also discovered that that my meter reads faster than my neighbours own even though they were all installed the same day. Our meter is showing 6-month reading of 1,676 while those of My neigbors shows 1260(with ACs and deep freezer)and 700. I don't even have an AC. The only thing I use that my neigbour does not use is the inverter. They use deep freezer, micro-wave, tv, industrial fans etc just like I do. So I really think it does exact on your consumption eventually. Thx |
If you use the alternator or electric motor from a generator that uses a kickstarter, it would have an inbuilt diode that steps down the power to exactly what the battery needs to charge. I am about to try that. You can get the DC motors only as second-hand, usually removed from a forklift. But whatever motor u get, please check the voltage. Some are 12v while some are 24v, the trailer size batteries. Some could even be higher. But for a simple 1.5kva gen, the 12v will suffice. Finally, this is an idea in the making. Further inputs, especially from professionals wuold be appreciated. Thx |

Hi, This is a diagrammatic sketch of a Self-powered Electric Generator. I am not a professional in this field. I leave it to the sound engineers in the house to panel-beat this sketch with constructive inputs that will help Nigerians. I know for sure that this is doable. I have seen a couple of You tube videos to that effect. I also went to price a DC motor and the guy selling was asking if I wanted to use it for a "fueless" generator (so he could he jack the price up I guess). He claimed a couple of guys have bought from him for that purpose. My question is, if such technology is workable, why then allow many families die of generator fumes? This is the diagram. Professionals should be introduce ideas/inputs that my layman sense may have overlooked. This could help a lot of persons.
