Tambuwal says zoning the 2023 presidency would narrow the party’s chances of winning the election. Members and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West region are not backing down on the demand for the 2023 presidency to be zoned to the southern part of the country. At its zonal caucus meeting held at the Oyo State Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, the party reiterated its support for southern governors’ demand that the next president must emerge from the south. In September 2021, the governors unanimously agreed that the 2023 presidency must be zoned to their region for the sake of justice and fairness. The governors also threatened to oppose any political party that fields a northern candidate for president in 2023. Corroborating the governors’ position, the South-West PDP at its meeting on Tuesday stressed its support for all efforts aimed at national cohesion through equitable distribution of federal positions and appointments among the six geo-political zones in Nigeria. In a communique read by Olasoji Adagunodo, the PDP's National Vice-Chairman, South-West, the party said it has resolved that the unity of its members in the zone was non-negotiable. The communique reads in part: “The PDP South-West Zone is in support of the Southern Governors’ Forum that the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should come from the South. “The South-West Zone reaffirms its position on restructuring of Nigeria.” However, the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal has rejected the idea of zoning the 2023 presidency to the south. The governor during his consultation meeting with former presiding officers of state Houses of Assembly and the House of Representatives in Abuja on Tuesday warned the PDP to leave zoning and focus on winning elections. Tambuwal said the PDP can rotate power between the north and the south only after it had successfully won the 2023 elections at the centre. The governor said this barely 24 hours after PDP governors in the south-south region demanded that the party should zone its presidential tickets to the south. Tambuwal said: “Now, this is for the PDP. In the South, as of today, the PDP is in eight government houses. The APC is also in eight government houses, leaving one, Anambra. In the North, the APC is in 14 government houses and the PDP is in five government houses. And they (the APC) have the President. “I’m giving you this analysis so that together, as leaders of our party, we can work towards winning the election, not zoning, not winning tickets. Yes, we can share tickets and everybody can take his piece and go to his zone. But you must plan to win the election. That’s the reality of it. It’s not anybody’s making. I didn’t make myself come from Sokoto. No, it’s God. So, we must accept these realities as a party and work with these realities to win the election. After that, we can now say okay, let’s share power. Win the election first. Don’t win zoning! Win the election and then we’ll come and share power.” The Sokoto governor advised the PDP to seek viable candidates with which it could win elections, adding that zoning the presidency would narrow the party’s chances. According to him, the ruling party would have lost the 2015 presidential election if it had presented a southern presidential candidate. Tambuwal is one of the main northern political leaders that seek to become Nigeria’s next president in 2023. |

Case numbers continued to rise in China as the country is suffering its worst wave of COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began. A total of 5,154 new infections were registered nationwide on Monday, according to official figures released on Tuesday, setting a new high in the current coronavirus wave. New infections have been reported from 20 regions of the country, with Jilin province in north-eastern China remaining the hardest-hit with 4,067 new infections detected. The capital Beijing and the two important economic centres Shanghai and Shenzhen also reported new infections. Both Shenzhen and Changchun, the provincial capital of Jilin, are currently in lockdown, which is also affecting the economy. In Changchun, carmaker Volkswagen had to temporarily suspend operations at three plants operated jointly with Chinese partner FAW on Monday. In Shenzhen, Apple supplier Foxconn stopped production at its manufacturing facility. The sprawling tech hub’s nine million inhabitants are in a one-week lockdown of the city. China has been pursuing a strict zero-Covid strategy, responding to local outbreaks with lockdowns, mass testing, transport restrictions and quarantines.

He also rued his luck as the N200,000 he collected got lost on his way back home. A self-confessed kidnapper has ratted on his gang for giving him a meagre N,200, 000 share from the N12 million ransom received for abducting two victims. The man, named, Sadu Bunkawu, who was not satisfied with the share he got from their last operation, went to the police to confess his sins. The 28-year-old Bunkawu from Filingo village in the Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State revealed to the police that his gang was paid the N12 million as ransom for the abduction of Umaru Diffiwa and Umaru Babidi of the same community. Displeased with the sharing formula adopted by his gang, he reported them to the police to correct the injustice. Bunkawu rued his luck over the operation as the N200,000 he collected got lost on his way back home. “I lost my share of the money while rushing to reach home on time,” Bunkawu said. “The money was paid to seven of us by the family members of the victims. After releasing them, I was called and given N200, 000 only,” he explained. However, he has been arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola by the Adamawa State Police Command on a charge of criminal conspiracy and kidnapping. The cashless banking sector is one of the biggest contributors to the Nigerian economy but it comes with growing problems that need solutions. Since the sweeping regulations by the Central Bank of Nigeria in the 2000s that made it compulsory for commercial banks to have a certain amount of capitalization in order to operate, the industry became more streamlined and very recognizable. Not only recognizable but profitable as well. Even if a bank struggles another bank will take over. The days of a bank folding and collapsing with people's funds and jobs going up in smoke are practically a thing of the past. The banking sector has remained one of the most lucrative in the Nigerian economy and one of the reasons it has remained so is the offering of digital products. With more products that can keep one out of the bank yet keep transactions going, banks are growing stronger and stronger. One product that revolutionized the banking industry is the mobile banking system or what is popularly known as POS (Point of Sale). With this, banks are in every street corner with different types of transactions carried out. It was a masterstroke to the Cashless Policy drive adopted by the CBN in 2012. Not only has the POS business made banking easier but it has also enriched the lives of the operators who make a good living on a daily, earning well from charges per transactions and commission from banks. The amount of income earned from this has led to the establishment of many POS outlets. Indeed, every street or corner one turns to is a POS stall or kiosk. It is sometimes difficult to count as the number of stalls are simply too many. Not to talk of when one enters major markets where different commodities are sold. It is good to earn a living off a life-changing product like the POS but for every good thing in Nigeria, comes a serious concern especially when it has to do with money. For everything that makes it easier to exchange money, comes a bigger element of financial fraud. With POS stalls increasing day by day, it is no surprise that financial fraud is being reported. Cases of ATM card holders details being exposed after making a POS transactions, to the fraudsters devising dubious means in how to get very sensitive details and then proceed to withdraw as much cash as they can from a bank account without the suspect's consent among other fraudulent practices. As fraud grows so do Nigerians become sceptical about using that system so as not to get caught in the web. In the wake of this concern, Jimoh Olajide, a member of the House of Representatives from Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency, called for the CBN to put stringent measures in place in regulating POS operations. “While many Nigerians are making legal money from this lucrative business, some are using it for fraudulent acts to create fake credit alerts to defraud innocent customers hence the need for government intervention to rescue the rising business sector in the country," Olajide said at the lower chamber of National Assembly in Abuja. While this is a good push from the lawmaker, it is rather surprising that the POS system was never regulated properly by banks or the CBN, making it possible just about anyone to go into the business. This should not be. There should be strict criteria in being able to own a POS machine. Not just anyone should own it. There should also be scrutiny on the number of stalls and kiosks that can be licensed to operate. It is reported that the CBN does not have a count of POS operators in the country and that is already a problem on its own. Even more ironic from the body that aggressively pushed for a cashless policy. There is no need to have excessive number of operators on the same street or corner. It makes fraudulent activity very easy to carry out. Bank users should be able to have peace of mind when using POS services and not fear being defrauded. It puts a big stain on what is already a successful and thriving model. All that is needed is tight security and monitoring around the system. Hopefully, the motion by Rep. Olajide will be the beginning of legislation and change that is critically needed in an ever-increasing yet porous sector of the banking industry. |
An Abuja-based trader, Nnaemeka Orjiakor, on Wednesday pleaded with an independent panel to order the police to pay him N10 million in compensation for alleged cruel treatment. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) panel, is investigating alleged human rights buses by the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units. Yoruba Nation campaigner, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, famously known as Igboho, has prayed for prevention of war in the world. Igboho said this in a video on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, two days after his release from incarceration. As seen in the video, Igboho was airing his views on the war between Ukraine and Russia. The activist prayed that the ongoing crisis doesn't degenerate into a full blown world war. “Let’s hope that this Ukraine crisis won’t lead to a third world war. May God not let us witness war in the world,” Igboho said. Igboho, who spent eight months in a Benin prison, regained freedom on Monday, March 7, 2022. His lawyer, however, revealed that his release was conditioner as he's not expected to go anywhere beyond the shores of the Francophone country. Igboho fled Nigeria in July 2021, after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), raided his Ibadan residence where they arrested and detained 13 of Igboho’s associates. Two of Igboho’s supporters, identified as Adogan and Alfa, lost their lives during the raid. The DSS also alleged that seven AK-47 rifles were recovered during the raid on his Soka residence on July 1, as well as three pump-action guns, 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines, 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, five cutlasses, one jack-knife, one pen knife, two pistol holsters, a pair of binoculars, a wallet containing $5, local and international driving licences in his name, ATM cards, a German residence permit No. YO2N6K1NY bearing his name, two whistles, 50 cartridges and 18 walkie-talkies. Others were three charm jackets/traditional body armour, two laptops, one Toshiba and one Compaq laptop, Igboho’s passport and those of his aides. The DSS had accused Igboho and his associates of planning to unleash violent insurrection against the Nigerian state. The activist escaped to Benin along with his wife, Ropo where they were both arrested by the country's authorities while trying to board a plane to Germany. Ropo was released shortly after but her husband was detained in Cotonou on allegations of “criminal association”. |
Kaduna state Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, said that President Muhammadu Buhari, has confided in him and some other governors regarding his preferred choice for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairmanship position. Speaking on a Channels Television program (Politics Today) monitored by this writer on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, the governor said Buhari has now decided to be fully involved in the internal affairs of the party. The APC has scheduled its National Convention for Saturday, March 6, 2022, this is after the convention had failed to hold on February 26 as earlier announced. Recall that on Monday, March 7, 2022, Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, assumed the position of the acting chairman of the Caretaker Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party. This was as reports stated that Buhari had booted out the substantive chairman of the CECPC, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state. Some party members have accused Buni of plotting with some elements to put the scheduled primary in jeopardy in order to realise their hatched plans. On assuming office on Monday, Bello quickly rallied the members and a list containing the zoning of the party executives has been released. Commenting on the development, El-Rufai explained how he and some other governors convinced Buhari to intervene in the affairs of the party. He said he and his colleagues met with the president to seek his counselling regarding the forthcoming convention of the party. El-Rufai explained how the governors were able to persuade Buhari to chose his preferred candidate amongst all the aspirants. "The president was reluctant to even nominate who is going to be the chairman of the party because he said, you know, I'm not contesting, I want to hand over this party to a strong leadership to ensure it continues. So I'm not interested in who's the party chairman unlike in 2019 when I was contesting." "But we said Mr President, all of us are state governors, we have an influence on who is the state chairman of the party, so it's only sensible and logical for us to give you the opportunity to guide us on who you think we should support as the national chairman. We forced him literally, he didn't want to do it." Although the governor refused to mention the name of the anointed candidate, he insisted that he is from the North Central region of the country. He did, I'm not allowed to reveal but he has told us who he prefers as the Chairman of the party because the tradition of the APC is that the president decides on who he's most comfortable with as the chairman of the party and we try to achieve consensus around that person. It's been reported that Buhari has endorsed Senator Abdullahi Adamu from Nasarawa state as his preferred choice for the chairmanship position. Other aspirants jostling for the position include former Borno state governor, Ali-Modu Sheriff, former Benue governor, George Akume, Senator Musa Abdullahi, and Senator Tanko Al-Makura. |
