The activities of motorcycle riders (okada) and tricycle operators (keke napep) across Lagos State have become a major source of concern. Their operations contribute significantly to traffic congestion, accidents, and even incidents of robbery, particularly around bus stops.


Allowing these operators to continue functioning freely within a rapidly developing and economically significant state like Lagos poses serious safety, security, and infrastructural challenges. At almost every bus stop, okada and keke riders operate without regard for traffic laws or road signs. In their rush to pick up passengers and meet their daily hire purchase remittance targets, they drive recklessly, endangering the lives of other road users and damaging vehicles and public property.


Their disregard for traffic rules such as wrongful overtaking, illegal parking, and obstruction of entrances worsens traffic flow and defaces our bus stops, creating a disorganised and unsafe environment for commuters.


Lagos, as a growing megacity with ambitions of global recognition, should take decisive steps to completely phase out motorcycle and keke operations within the state. Every bus stop should be well-coordinated, organised, and free from the chaos caused by these transport operators.


For Lagos to maintain its status as a modern, efficient, and safe urban center, it is imperative that stricter enforcement measures be introduced, ensuring that only compliant and orderly forms of transportation are permitted on our roads.

I sincerely hope this message reaches the Lagos State Government and that the ban on keke and okada operations is enforced throughout the entire state. There should be order and decency at all bus stops, ensuring that no bus stop becomes overcrowded or unsafe for commuters. Every bus stop should be attractive to both residents and foreigners, reflecting the image of a modern city, and should not be congested with defacing means of transportation.
