Welcome and all the best with your sojourn.
Your post is too broad. Consider researching MSc in Ireland and come back asking specific questions for clarity or guidance.
Kindly give thought to this thread's first page - https://www.nairaland.com/4056995/general-irish-student-visa-work
You may want to check the Irish requirements FAQ posted above on this page.

It appears that this South African Visa is tougher than I thought. With this experience of yours, I am beginning to be confused.

I recently got a postdoc at Wits. You said because "my South African police report was not included." Is this required from someone living outside SA? Please clarify that.

Among all the requirements, I saw "the applicant needs to provide all educational qualification certificates with the notary. All my certificates were attested by the Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs of Nigeria. Do I still need to notarize them? In addition, my PhD defence will be held in May 2023 (thesis submitted on 31st Jan 2023). Do you think a letter indicating that my thesis had been submitted is enough proof at the embassy?

Thank you in anticipation of your reply.
My application for research/visitors visa for postdoc in SA was recently declined because i also did not include a SA police clearance report. I know 2 other postdocs who also were denied because of that. I strongly advise that you get this SA police clearance especially if you are not presently in SA.

Yes! This is the only logical reason for holding people's passports and ultimately rejecting the applications. In January 2022, I submitted an application for a research/visitor visa, but it was denied in June 2022 because my South African police report was not included. I quickly obtained the police report and resubmitted the application in July 2022. My visa came out in February with validity running from February to December 2023. This is how my two-year postdoctoral fellowship was reduced from 24 to 10 months. If not for the fact that my university started paying my stipends in January 2022 and that I published three articles and wrote one book chapter working remotely from Nigeria, the postdoc would have been terminated in 2022. A number of my friends' postdoc fellowships at other schools were terminated due to delay from the embassy.
We should not also forget that the country belongs to them and they have every right to allow/disallow other nationals from entry their country.
Bro, please i need to call you pls, i had once applied for research/visitors visa for postdoc. my number is 08037379828. it's important pls.

Not me but I know of people who got critical skills and Permanent residency results last week (both were positive).

Please do you know if they submitted a valid SA police clearance certificate

How do one obtain SA police report from Nigeria? Last time i checked, even while being in SA yourself it takes at least 3 months after doing biometrics at SA police stations for it to be approved.
So how do they expect us to get SA police clearance while being physically present in Nigeria knowing how difficult it can sometimes be.
Just to add that i submitted my visitors visa application for one year postdoc research since May 2022 and no response still.

I assume his research visit will exceed 3 months. Therefore, an original police clearance certificate issued by the police in each country where he has resided for 12 months or longer after attaining the age of 18 years is compulsory. So, it’s not about when he left SA but, how long he lived in SA as an adult. If he stayed there for more than 12 months, then he must submit a police clearance certificate from SA in addition to any other country he has lived in for over 12 months as an adult. Also, the certificate must not be older than six months at the time of its submission.

I always recommend that applicants should read the documents checklist on the VFS site thoroughly. Ask him to submit a fresh application and please download the document checklist (you’ll see the police report requirement in paragraph 13): https://visa.vfsglobal.com/one-pager/southafrica/nigeria/english/pdf/visitor-visa-exceeding-three-months-jan-2022.pdf

I think it is unfair of you to say this.
So all the people that have been complaining have been lying right?

What you don't understand is, there is probably a first round screening which yours just passed through. Also they are trying to avoid delaying people's passport for so long especially for those that are just submitting.

Also most of the people that have been complaining have been complaining about study visa.

If you can gladly come back here to share that your visa is approved then I will say sth else. But I can tell you that it is most likely not approved. If it is approved, then you probably went through the other routes that people have talked about on this thread

I think the issue is that any short term visa application that is usually between 1-3 months is processed in Lagos or abuja. Because its not a long term visit, it wont be sent to Pretoria and so it gets approved in Nigeria. This is why the guy that submitted in Aug got a quick response from the embassy.
So who submitted for long term stay ( study visa, work visa, critical skill, visitors visa for research) are being delayed because the application was sent to Pretoria for adjudication. This has only recently changed ( from sept 1st) such that embassies are now allowed to process application and make final decisions. so those that applied for stays longer than 3 months, expect some response soon
