Sports / BREAKING: Lionel Messi Rejects’ Barcelona’s New Contract Offer Worth £25m-30m by docky22: 10:52pm On May 06, 2017
Lionel Messi has turned down Barcelona’s offer of a new contract worth between £25m-30m a year, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
The Argentine superstar’s contract at the Nou Camp expires in June 2018 and discussions over a new deal have been ongoing for months.

Talks between Messi’s father and agent, Jorge, and the club president Josep Maria Bartomeu have yet to yield an agreement for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s future.

But despite the initial contract rejection, AS report that a deal is still likely to be struck over the coming weeks. Negotiations are very much still ongoing and there is an expectation that the two parties will find common ground eventually to seal a new deal.

Messi expects to receive an improved offer from Barcelona and is prepared to hold out – especially given the recent contracts given to team-mates Luis Suarez and Neymar. The Argentine, who has four goals in his last three matches, is therefore happy to wait before tying his future down at the Catalan club.

Politics / Buhari Releases Additional N35 Billion For Amnesty Programme by docky22: 10:03pm On May 06, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari has released additional N35 billion to step up the Amnesty Programme in the Niger Delta.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, said on Saturday that it was in sustenance of the new understanding between the Federal Government and the oil-producing communities of Niger Delta.

He said although the federal government had approved a N20bn allocation for the Amnesty Programme in the 2016 budget, Buhari had now raised the funds to N55bn with the recent release of additional N30bn.

Akande stated: “There is also a planned release of another N5bn later. Currently the Amnesty Office has now paid up all ex-militants backlog of their stipends up to the end of 2016.

‘The release of the additional funds is coming after presidential level interactive engagements in the Niger Delta, where the Buhari administration has enunciated a New Vision for the oil-producing areas based on the presentation made by the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, to the President when he received leaders and stakeholders from the region last November.

“Subsequently, the President asked his deputy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, to embark on a tour of the region that saw him visiting several oil-producing States in the country.”

He said beside the monthly payment of about N65, 000 to N66,000 to the ex-militants, the funds would also go to the provision of reintegration activities under the Amnesty Programme including payment of tuition fees for beneficiaries from Niger Delta who are in post-secondary institutions at home and abroad, payment of in-training and hazard allowances and vocational training costs.

‘There are also empowerment schemes and self-help, self-employment support funds, including provision of needed equipments by the Amnesty Office. Equally, the funds would also support the training of pilots, aviation engineers, technicians, and motor vehicles mechanics from the oil-producing communities.

“The Buhari administration reassures the Niger Delta communities of its unalloyed commitment to a faithful implementation of its promises made during the FG interactive engagement visits by the Vice President to different oil-producing communities

“Other promises made during the visits are currently at different stages of effective implementation, including the effective opening of the Maritime University, integration of illegal refiners under the concept of new Modular Refineries, resumption of all abandoned construction projects in the region, the Ogoni Clean-up, and several others.

‘For instance the Maritime University is now on course to be opened before the end of the year as the presidency has already set the process in motion as announced yesterday. Other announcements are to follow as each of the commitments of the FG to the Niger Delta oil-producing communities reach advanced and implementation stages.

“Already there is an inter-ministerial group consisting of all relevant ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs of the FG, with the involvement of relevant State governments led by the Vice President that meets regularly to drive the different initiatives and ensure effective and ongoing implementation,” he said.

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, yesterday said measures had been taken to detect malpractices in the forthcoming Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) nationwide.

He said the anti-cheating measures would also be used to spot examinations officials aiding unprofessional conduct, no matter how highly placed.

Health / Buhari Needs To Go For More Medical Treatment – CAN by docky22: 7:33pm On May 04, 2017
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari, to go for further medical check-up.

In a statement released on Tuesday, CAN said Buhari needs time away to look after his health.

President of the Christian body, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, also called on the Federal Government to rise up and end the challenges facing its citizens.

He spoke through a communique issued by his Special Assistant (Media & Communications), Adebayo Oladeji, at the just concluded 104th annual session of the denomination held last week in Abuja.

The communique reads: “We thank the Almighty God for the life of our President Buhari, who fell ill and travelled for medical attention abroad. We observe with dismay the political under-current that surrounds the health of our dear President, especially the lack of openness in telling Nigerians that he went for medical attention.

“However, we are very grateful and adore the name of our Lord God Almighty who in His infinite mercy had graciously brought our President back on his feet and restored his health. We, therefore, urge Nigerians to continue to pray for him for more strength and mercy of God as he resumed office. We advise the President not to hesitate in going for further treatment if that would help in quickly restoring him back to sound health so as to continue performing his duties to the nation.

“We encourage and advise Nigerians to have positive disposition towards the lives of our leaders by constantly wishing them well and praying for them at all times.

“We commend the Federal Government for sustaining and winning war against various security challenges confronting our nation namely: Boko Haram insurgency, kidnapping, rape, gunmen attacks, militancy, ritual killing, Fulani herdsmen and farmers clashes in various parts of the nation and of recent the communal crisis in Ile-Ife.

“We also observe and commend the Federal Government in the efforts to stem the tide of criminal activities and resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in the Northeast due to Boko Haram insurgency as well as the securing of the release of 21 Chibok girls. We urge the government not to relent in getting the rest released before their lives are totally messed up by the terrorists.

“We observe the persistent crisis in Southern Kaduna, Agatu Community in Benue State and other places in the East, South-South and Western Nigeria. We condemn in strong terms the reckless killing and destruction of property taking place in the areas.

“However, despite the steps taken so far by government in tackling security problems in the country, there are still various security challenges in the nation.

“We, therefore, urge the government to take the following measures: Government should be proactive in responding to security challenges and bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to book.

“We encourage the Federal Government to provide relief materials for the affected communities in Southern Kaduna Area and other places to cushion the effect of the crisis.”
