A Second Mandate Must Be Earned: The Governance Case for Continuity in Nigeria.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, political debate will increasingly revolve around personalities, party loyalties and regional calculations. Yet the more important question is whether the direction of public policy since 2023 should be consolidated, corrected or abandoned.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first term is neither an uncomplicated success nor an unqualified failure. It is better understood as a period of disruptive economic correction that has produced signs of macroeconomic stabilisation while imposing severe costs on households.

Nigeria entered the administration with deep structural weaknesses. Fuel subsidies consumed public resources without reliably benefiting the poorest citizens. Multiple foreign-exchange windows encouraged arbitrage and weakened transparency. Low revenue mobilisation limited public investment, while monetary financing of deficits contributed to inflationary pressure.

Reform was therefore unavoidable. The removal of fuel subsidies, liberalisation of the exchange rate and tightening of monetary policy addressed problems that successive governments had recognised but repeatedly postponed.

However, necessary reform is not automatically good reform. Policy must also be judged by how its costs are sequenced, distributed and mitigated. In Nigeria, major reforms moved faster than measures to protect vulnerable households, support small businesses, strengthen public transport and stabilise food supply. Citizens were asked to bear immediate pain while promised benefits remained distant.

That failure weakened public trust. A government cannot demand sacrifice from citizens while appearing tolerant of waste, excessive political appointments, opaque expenditure or weak accountability. Economic courage must be matched by ethical consistency. This makes the quality of governance, rather than reform announcements alone, the decisive measure of meaningful progress.

There are, nevertheless, signs that some foundations of recovery are emerging. Growth has improved, the foreign-exchange market is functioning more transparently, external reserves have strengthened and government revenue has risen. These developments matter because Nigeria cannot finance infrastructure, social services or productive investment from an economy trapped in a permanent fiscal crisis. They also create a stronger platform for private investment, planning and more predictable economic decision-making across sectors.

But macroeconomic stability is not the same as development. Millions of Nigerians continue to face poverty, food insecurity, high transport costs, unemployment and declining purchasing power. Growth that cannot be felt in household income, employment or access to basic services remains politically and socially fragile.

The credible case for continuity in 2027 is therefore not that the first term has been painless or flawless. It is that Nigeria has already incurred much of the cost of correcting an unsustainable system, and a disorderly reversal could recreate the distortions that made reform necessary.

Continuity, however, must not mean more of the same. A second-term proposition must offer a new governing compact based on five priorities.

First, economic recovery must reach households through reliable social protection, food security, affordable transport, electricity and basic services. Second, growth must create productive jobs in agriculture, manufacturing, technology, construction and the creative economy. Third, government must demonstrate measurable progress on insecurity, kidnapping and violent conflict. Fourth, fiscal reform must begin with government itself through lower waste, stronger procurement oversight and transparent public spending. Fifth, continuity must deepen democracy through credible elections, judicial independence, media freedom and respect for opposition.

The Tinubu administration has undertaken difficult reforms that previous governments deferred. That provides the foundation for a possible case for continuity. But foundations are not finished buildings.

A second mandate should not be treated as a reward for hardship or as a blank cheque. It must be earned through visible improvements in household welfare, security, employment, public integrity and democratic accountability.

Nigeria needs accountable continuity where policies are working, honest correction where they are not, and measurable commitments against which every government can be judged.

Can Nigeria win its asymmetric wars against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping? The answer depends on what we mean by “winning”.

Victory cannot realistically mean the permanent military elimination of every terrorist cell, bandit gang or kidnapping network. In asymmetric conflict, victory is better measured by whether armed groups lose territory, leadership, financing and freedom of movement; whether citizens can travel, farm, attend school and worship without fear; and whether legitimate government, rather than armed groups, determines everyday life.

Judged by that standard, Nigeria’s security record in 2026 offers grounds for cautious optimism.

There have been significant operational successes. In June, security forces rescued 360 men, women and children held by Boko Haram fighters in the Mandara Mountains of Borno State. In August, another 308 abducted people were rescued from the Kainji Lake National Park forest, including victims kidnapped in Kwara and Niger states. Days later, troops freed another 33 abductees in Zamfara.

The successful rescue in Ori-ire Local Government Area of Oyo State deserves particular attention. On 10 July, security forces freed 39 schoolchildren and six teachers kidnapped when gunmen attacked three schools on 15 May. One teacher had tragically been killed in captivity. Eight suspected kidnappers were arrested. The operation ended 56 days of captivity and showed that the state could sustain a rescue operation even as organised kidnapping spread into the South-West.

Earlier in January, troops also rescued 62 captives from a bandit hideout in Zamfara. These operations suggest improving use of intelligence, surveillance, inter-agency coordination and targeted operations—the capabilities asymmetric warfare requires.

There have also been battlefield gains. In March, troops killed dozens of armed bandits following an attack around Danmusa in Katsina State. Later that month, Nigerian troops, supported by air power, repelled a major Boko Haram and ISWAP assault on a military position at Mallam Fatori in Borno State, reportedly killing scores of insurgents.

Perhaps the most strategically important development came in May, when a joint Nigerian-American operation killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described by both governments as a senior Islamic State leader involved in coordinating international operations and financing. His removal demonstrated the value of intelligence-sharing against networks that do not respect national borders.

These successes matter because they show that the Nigerian state is neither helpless nor strategically paralysed. Security agencies are rescuing hostages, penetrating forest sanctuaries, disrupting insurgent formations and degrading militant leadership.

But tactical success is not the same as strategic victory.

Armed groups continue to mount attacks, conduct kidnappings and exploit large weakly governed spaces. The Oyo school abductions themselves were a warning that organised kidnapping can migrate into areas previously regarded as comparatively secure.

Nigeria’s deeper challenge, therefore, is not simply whether the military can win battles. It clearly can. The more important question is whether those gains can be converted into lasting security and legitimate state authority.
That brings governance to the centre of the war.

Research by the United Nations Development Programme on recruitment into violent extremist groups in Africa found that government action was the most frequently cited trigger among respondents who identified a specific event that pushed them towards extremism. It also found very low levels of trust in national government among many voluntary recruits.

The implication for Nigeria is clear. Abusive security practices, injustice, unemployment, exclusion and weak public services can recreate the conditions military operations are trying to destroy.

Nigeria therefore wins strategically only when the removal of an insurgent camp is followed by effective administration; when liberated communities have functioning schools, health services, justice systems and livelihoods; when security personnel behave lawfully; and when citizens no longer depend on armed groups for protection.

Citizen participation is equally important. Traditional rulers, religious leaders, women’s organisations, youth groups and community networks can provide early warning, challenge extremist narratives and mediate local grievances. But community participation must strengthen lawful state authority, not produce uncontrolled vigilantism.

Regional cooperation is also indispensable. Terrorist and criminal networks cross borders and exploit instability across the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin. Nigeria cannot defeat a transnational threat through national action alone.

So, can Nigeria win?

The evidence from 2026 supports a more confident answer than simple pessimism. Nigeria is demonstrating that it can rescue hostages, disrupt armed groups, defeat major attacks and remove important militant leaders.

But the country has not yet won.

Nigeria will know it is winning when successful military operations consistently produce secure roads, functioning schools, cultivated farms, safer communities and citizens who no longer negotiate with armed men for the right to live ordinary lives.

The Nigerian state is showing that it can hurt its adversaries. The harder task is to ensure that every security success permanently shrinks the political, economic and social space in which terrorism, banditry and kidnapping regenerate.

That is how an asymmetric war is ultimately won.

We understand inflation instinctively in this country. We have watched a currency that once commanded respect shrink in our pockets, until the notes we carry buy a fraction of what they once did. What fewer of us have named, though we feel it just as sharply, is a second, quieter inflation. Not of money, but of paper. Of degrees.

Here is how it works. Each year the universities pour more graduates into a job market that is not growing fast enough to absorb them. The supply of certificates swells. The number of decent jobs does not. And so, by the oldest law in economics, the value of each certificate falls. A qualification that once guaranteed a good position now guarantees nothing at all. This is degree inflation: more credentials, chasing fewer and lesser jobs.

The symptoms are everywhere, once you learn to read them. A first-class graduate driving a ride-share to survive. A role that a diploma once filled now demanding a master's. Employers raising the bar not because the work has grown more complex, but simply because they can, because the queue outside the door is long and desperate. The paper is there. The power is gone.

For years this has been treated as an unfortunate fact of Nigerian life, something to be endured rather than solved. But in a modest yet ambitious institution in Ibadan, a group of academics and administrators has decided that endurance is no longer an acceptable answer.

Naming the disease before prescribing the cure
American Open University Nigeria (A-Global) does not present itself as merely another addition to Nigeria's crowded roll of tertiary institutions. That, its founders argue, is precisely the problem: too many institutions producing too much of the same devalued paper. A-Global positions itself instead as a deliberate act of engineering, a bespoke response to degree inflation itself. It is licensed and accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), and it was built upon a decade of research rather than inherited convention.

The figures that animate its mission were established through a feasibility study conducted before the university opened its doors, and they read like a diagnosis. According to that study, 95 percent of students and 85 percent of employers agree that the current higher education system is failing to meet the demands of the 21st century. More telling still: 58 percent of graduates have seriously considered abandoning their degrees to learn a trade; 43 percent now work in fields entirely unrelated to what they studied; and automation, the study warns, threatens roughly half of today's jobs, even as many institutions keep printing qualifications for an economy that no longer exists.

Read together, these numbers describe a single phenomenon. When more than half of graduates would trade their degree for a trade, and nearly half are working outside their field, the market has already spoken. The certificate no longer carries the value stamped upon it.

"We are not here to add to the pile of certificates in the labour market," the university's founder and president, Dr. David Seyi Akanbi, told me, with the unhurried conviction of a man who has thought about this for a very long time. "That pile is the problem. Every year we manufacture more paper and wonder why it is worth less. We are here to do the opposite: to produce not more graduates, but more capable ones. To restore value to the qualification itself."

Dr. Akanbi is not a casual entrant to this debate. He holds two doctorates, one in Human Capital Development from the University of Southern Mississippi and another in Instructional Technology from Northern Illinois University, alongside a Public Leadership Credential from the Harvard Kennedy School. His research into Persuasive Learning Design shaped a curriculum built for genuine engagement. His study of online education adoption in Nigeria, developed in consultation with the NUC and the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, ensured the model was rooted in local realities rather than borrowed wholesale from abroad. And his leadership work at Harvard produced the institution's guiding philosophy.

Fighting inflation with substance, not paper.
If money inflation is cured by producing real value rather than printing more notes, degree inflation demands the same discipline: qualifications backed by genuine, demonstrable competence. That is the logic behind what the university calls the EDGE Framework: Educate, Develop, Grow, Empower,[/b]an architecture that runs through every course and every assessment.

Under [b]Educate, students are taught not from dusty theory but with the actual tools and protocols of employers such as Google, Microsoft, Cisco, and CompTIA. Develop attends to the whole person, cultivating critical thinking, ethical leadership, adaptability, and the professional maturity that no examination can measure. Grow replaces abstract testing with a project-based model in which students build genuine portfolios; by graduation, the university says, each student has accumulated two to four years of practical project experience, dismantling the cruel "no experience" barrier that keeps so many young Nigerians unemployed. And Empower furnishes the mentorship, alumni networks, and direct industry engagement that turn a qualification into an actual career.

The distinction matters. In an inflated market, a bare degree is a devalued note. A degree accompanied by industry certifications and a portfolio of real work is something the market cannot easily discount.
"The EDGE Framework is our promise," Dr. Akanbi said. "We don't just want you to graduate. We want you to evolve."


Education without borders
A second driver of degree inflation is scarcity of access. When over a million qualified young Nigerians are turned away from university each year, the few seats available become distorted in value, and the pressure to acquire any certificate, from anywhere, intensifies. A-Global's answer is the HyFlex (Highly Flexible) Learning Model, and it is here that the university most sharply departs from the rigid orthodoxy of Nigerian higher education. The model operates across three fluid dimensions. Students may study 100 percent online, from anywhere in the world; 100 percent on campus, at the Global Campus in Ibadan, the Metro Campus in Abeokuta, or City Centres in Ondo Town or Ogbomosho; or they may mix and match freely, week by week, without seeking administrative approval.

"HyFlex is not simply about having online classes; that is a common misconception," Dr. Akanbi was careful to clarify. "It is about universal learning adaptability. Life changes. You might take a job in another state, start a family, or face a sudden need to travel. In the old system, you would defer your admission or drop out. Here, your education adapts to you." Walk into a lecture in Ibadan on Monday, join a lab session in Lagos on Wednesday, attend a seminar in Abeokuta on Friday, all with no letter to the Dean, no forms, and no deferral. Relocate, and the education relocates with you.


Meeting learners where they stand.
Degree inflation punishes some groups more cruelly than others: the professional whose qualification has been overtaken, the diploma holder facing a ceiling that keeps rising, the graduate whose class of degree now closes doors. The university has therefore abandoned the "one-size-fits-all" model of admission in favour of three distinct pathways. The START pathway (four years) serves fresh secondary school leavers, JUPEB, IJMB, and A-Level candidates, building a professional portfolio from the very first day. The ACCELERATE pathway (two to three years) recognises up to 30 credits from prior study for NCE, ND, and transfer students. "You don't start over," as Dr. Akanbi puts it. "Your previous education counts." And the ADVANCE pathway (twelve to eighteen months) offers HND holders, Third Class graduates, and chartered professionals in bodies such as ICAN, CIBN, and CIPM a route to convert existing credentials into a competitive, technology-focused B.Sc. without pausing their careers.

The academic offering spans Data Science, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Business IT, Entrepreneurship, and Business and Public Administration, alongside postgraduate programmes including the MBA, MIT, MPA, and MPS. To lower the threshold further, the institution has announced a forthcoming Skills Scholarship, offering up to full tuition coverage, and interest-free student loans.

A verdict, of sorts
I have reported on enough grand educational promises to approach them with a measure of caution. What distinguishes A-Global, in my assessment, is that it has correctly diagnosed the disease. The Nigerian graduate crisis is not merely one of unemployment; it is one of devaluation, of an entire generation's credentials being inflated into near worthlessness. A university that grasps this, and that responds by making its qualifications scarce in value rather than scarce in supply, is asking the right question.

Whether it can deliver at scale is a question only time will answer. But the premise is sound, the intent is serious, and the conversation it invites is one Nigeria can no longer afford to postpone. If we do not find a way to restore worth to the degree, we will keep printing paper that no one, least of all an employer, is willing to honour.

WBA Bout: Ariya congratulates DeLads Boxing Promotion, NBBC, Lagos State govt and boxing fans



More than 1 Million subscribers tuned in to Ariya Networks to watch the WBA Championship Live. The unexpected surge caused some technical challenges.

Despite the challenges, the Management of Ariya Networks [url][/url] expressed delight with DeLads Boxing Promotion, Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, Lagos State government, Lagos State Sports Commission, and boxing fans, for their different roles in making the much publicized "Battle of The Unbeaten" a successful one. The competition was put together by DeLads Boxing Promotion in conjunction with Ariya Networks.

The Networks expressed gratitude to DeLads Boxing Promotion, Lagos State Sports Commission, the Lagos State government, and Dr Rafiu Ladipo, who led members of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control for making the Battle of the Unknown as great and memorable one in the annals of Nigeria's boxing history.

On Sunday inside the jam-packed Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, amateur and professional boxers slugged it out to the joy of enthusiastic fans. Despite the glitches recorded, the tournament was worth the time and money of boxing fans who trooped to the venue to watch the bouts.

For Ariya, though, their participation was an eye opener for a company that's out to promote African content to the world, including African sports, but not limited to it. For a few hours, subscribers were able to watch until when almost a million others attempted to log in at the same time. Prepared as the company was, that number was huge. "We successfully managed it when the number was just 35,000 sign in per minute, but we weren't prepared for a million at once," a top Management official said.

"We have learned something here. We underestimated the number of people who would likely watch. That tells us that Nigeria has the market to make boxing a self-sustaining sector. So, we will work towards rectifying further glitches in the future because we want to take local African sports globally for our people to watch on smart devices everywhere," he added.

Just five months as a Live streaming platform, the network is planning to host another continental boxing tournament in collaboration with many boxing promoters before the end of this year. Before then, subscribers to Ariya can stream the bout between Taiwo Agbaje (a.k.a. Eshepo) and Tosin Osaigbovo (a.k.a. Sojarboy) on Ariya Plus [url][/url] from Wednesday, April 29th, while the amateur category of the Battle of The Unbeaten will be available on Ariya Sport 2 channel.

This is because we don't talk about ourselves; we don't take to ourselves. We allow others to tell our stories for us, mine our minerals for when, when we have the capacity to do this by ourselves.

"Ariya is determined to get Africans talking. I believe our coming at this point is timely because Africans are now interested in doing all the things we've not been doing before," he told journalists in Ibadan.

The show, hosted by Anjola Olayinka, is designed to bring back memories of the good old days of music among the aged and to share nostalgic experiences with the new generation.

BamBam Session debuted early April with the story of late Christy Essien-Igbokwe, popularly known as Akpena, and followed with Jim Reeves. Last week on its Double Whammy edition, two British reggae groups, Steel Pulse and Aswad, were featured.

The network is into broadcasting and streaming African content to a global audience.

Both headliners are undefeated in their careers. Tosin “Soldierboy” Osaigbovo and former World Boxing Federation Intercontinental Featherweight champion, Taiwo “Esepo” Agbaje, will compete for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight title.

The bout is promoted by Ariya Networks, in conjunction with De Lad’s Boxing Promotion. It will bring the two undefeated fighters together for a shot at the WBO (World Boxing Organization) lightweight division from their featherweight category.

Agbaje,38 years old, has recorded 13 knockouts in 18, while Osaigbovo is unbeaten with 12 wins from 12 fights.

The daughter of popular actress, Mrs Feyikemi Olayinka, known as Asake in "Oleku" movie of the 90s, admitted that her mother introduced her to old school songs, and her interest in it has started to pay off.

The Ile Ife hailing musician said he sang a song in honor of the Ibadan king just to document his historical ascension.

Wednesday, November 26, 2025, will leave an indelible mark in the memories of the children and grandchildren of late Professor (Mrs) Iyabo Mabawanku was laid to rest in Ibadan amidst pump and pageantary.

Described as a befitting burial by a lot of the guests who attended the funeral rites, the University of Ibadan stood still for one of theirs for three days from November 24 to 26, 2025.

Expressing his gratitude to friends and well-wishers, Olumide Mabawanku, the eldest son, was full of praises of those who turned up to make the burial a befitting one for their mother.

"We will always remember the prayers and words of encouragement from everyone. We appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts", he said.

At the reception, which held at the ICC (International Conference Center, UI), it was a feast as the huge number of guests were treated to exotic drinks and delicious foods, together with the pulsating Tungba music that guests danced to nonstop for hours, all culminated to Professor Mabawanku"s final journey home.

Burial rites for the former lecturer at the department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, began with a night of tributes at the Faculty of Education on Monday, followed by service of songs on Tuesday at the ICC

77 years old Mabawanku is survived by children, Olumide, Ayotunde, Tolulope, and Olaolu, while the grandchildren are: Tiwa, Kunmi, Tunmi, Mayo, Folarin, Nifemi and Gbemi

Seyi Crown, real name Adefioye Oluseyi Adewale, will be revealed to Nigeria's music industry when he unveils his maiden single titled "Alright" and a musical video dedicated to the recently crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, HRM Oba Adewolu Rasheed Ladoja.

The Olubadan; who is the father of the day, was a former governor of Oyo State, and also a former senator of Nigeria, while other dignitaries expected at the unveiling are a former minister for education, Professor Tunde Adeniran and Ambassador (Dr) Yemi Farounbi.

The protegee of Dr Farounbi said that the musical video of another song titled "The World", which will be unveiled to music lovers on December 4, 2025, was shot to document the glorious moment in the annals of Ibadand, and also the Yorubaland, as it was a day of honour that should not be lost.

"That day was magnificent. Many will not forget it because it had been long that an Ibadan was so celebrated with pomp and pageantary. I thought making a song for that event would be good for historical purpose, "he said.

The unveiling will take place at the NUJ Press Center, Iyaganku GRA, Ibadan, on December 4, 2025.

Family, well wishers set for Prof's burial

Friends and families of the late Professor (Mrs) Iyabo Mabawonku are set for the burial of the former lecturer at the Library, Archival & Information Studies, University of Ibadan, scheduled for Monday, November 24, 2025 till Wednesday, 26th.

Mrs Mabawonku died last month at the age of 77 years.

Her eldest son, Olumide Mabawonku, and his siblings expressed their gratitude to their mother for her love for family, and devotion to her children after the passing of their father, Mabawonku of the Agric Department, 31 years ago.

"She was a strong woman. We will miss her very much," he said.

Night of tributes is at the faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Monday, 24th, while the service of songs follows the next day at the International Conference Center, UI, from 3:00-6:00 pm.
On November 26th, the lying in-state will take place at Trenchard Hall, UI, from 8:00 to 9:00 am, followed by the funeral service at the Chapel of Resurrection at 10:00 am. Reception is at the International Conference Center from 12:00-5:00 pm

ULE Homes wins $10,000 at TechCabal competition


ULE Homes has won $10,000, the prize money for the Moonshot by TechCabal competition which took place in Lagos on Wednesday. The competition was a gathering of the most audacious thinkers and innovators in Africa's tech ecosystem.

From the thousands of up-starters who applied to participate in the event, ULE Homes was among the final 10 that participated at the Moonshot stage, carting home N15,000,000.

Speaking after the event, the CEO and co-founder of the mortgage company, Omolade Akinwumu, told reporters that the prize money would be used to finish and launch their new website so that the company can go live faster.

The pre-trial, sponsored by Dr Badmus, took place at the Purple Hall of the Ooni of Ife Palace in Ile Ife, Osun State, while representatives of Gracefield College, Akinremi Testimony, and Iyanda Yakub emerged winner and runner up. Kazeem Balqees of Shepherd Hill Model College was third.

The seven schools that participated are;

The Ooni reminded the Yoruba people that the language remains one of the most salient part of their cultural identity, and must be protected and promoted.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdul Rafiu Oyekanmi Mosobalaje, Bamigboye II, the Olupo of Oluponna; also called on Yoruba descendants to teach their children Yoruba language by ensuring it is spoken in there homes. He urged parents and teachers to teach younger ones the Omoluabi virtues of Yoruba people.

Professor Ajibade Olusola, a professor of Yoruba Language, Literature, and Culture at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, called on education policy makers to strengthen Yoruba language through policies that will make it a subject everywhere Yoruba Language is being spoken.

Professor Ajibade advised the elite to change their erroneous perception that if a child speaks Yoruba at tender age, he or she will not understand English Language. "That is a total fallacy", he stated.

The organisers expressed their gratitude to Governor Adeleke for his unflinching support to the education sector in the state. They also thanked Ariya TV for providing media coverage for the competition, assuring the media outfit of further future collaborations.

"We will always need the support of the media. We are grateful that Ariya TV was there for us. Hopefully, we will do more of this in future, especially when we start the competition on a larger scale soon", said Mr Dayo Taiwo, on of the organisers of the school competition.

In separate goodwill messages from the Osun State Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Alhaji Murtala Kehinde Jimoh, and the Local Education Inspector, Ife Central Local Government, Mr Adesoji Ezekiel Adeniran, all expressed their support for the ingenious idea that aims to encourage the use of Yoruba language, as well as promote it.

Dr Idris Olagoke Badmus has pledged to provide one thousand copies of the book on late Olu Makinde to higher institutions in Nigeria within two months.

The chief launcher made the promise at the Trenchard Hall University of Ibadan venue of the event.

At N20,000 per copy, the gesture translates to the CEO of AMNI Corporation having launched the book at N20mn, a promise that got the venue erupted as Alhaji Ahmad Sawaba and Senator Babafemi Ojudu applauded the businessman.

The book launch was attended by Sawaba, a special adviser to the governor of Kano State; and who doubled as the representative of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State; Senator Babafemi Ojudu; Honourable Justice Bayo Taiwo, Ambassador (Dr) Yemi Farounbi; Princess Aderonke Rahmat Adedoja, the president of National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), Chief Olorode, Feyi Ogunduyile, Micho Ade, Asha Gangalli, among others, the book launch was in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the journalist's passing.

Book reviewer, Dr Emma Jimo, held guests spellbound as his delivery brought the book to live, even as Mr Adeniran Makinde, the General Secretary of NANTAP (National Association of Nigerian Theater Arts Practitioners), urged Nigerians to document African stories for posterity. "This is more than a book. It's a movie in waiting and NANTAP will explore that option in future", he promised.

Written by Tade Makinde II, Mrs Funmi Aragbaye, guest speaker, took guests on memory lane as she described Makinde as a fearless journalist, and also as a friend of artists.

Micho Ade also praised Makinde for selflessly promoting Nigerian artists, something that's missing now as many no longer find it worthy to invest their energy into developing talents.

Makinde is remembered for organizing the musical competition that catapulted Sunny Ade into national, and later, global fame, from 1977 that he won it.

A foundation was inaugurated in the memory of late Olu Makinde and his wife, Margaret Makinde. Ambassador Farounbi is the Chairman of the foundation. Other members will be announced later.

The Emir of Zing, His Royal Highness, the Pkanti Zing., Alhaji Suleman Sambo, and the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Engr Godfrey Andrew Dame of Taraba State, have expressed their support for the Belle Hunting festival as this year's edition holds next week.

In separate meetings with the event planner recently, the Emir, through his assistant, Wakilia Zing, His Highness, Alhaji Adamu Mohamed, said the emir will support the Lagos-based entertainment company for chosing to help galvanise the tourism sector in the Northern state on the promise of the Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, to provide the enabling environment for tourism development in the state. The state aims to generate N3bn revenue from tourism in 2025.

In the same vein, Engr Dame, who hosted Mr Tade Makinde, the CEO of Twice As Much Entertainment, the company's Project Manager, Mr Yinka Adejuwon, and other staff members, said he was in support of his people's desire to grow the sector as he is a firm believer in African culture and tradition.

Excited about the ingenious approach of Twice As Much to use tmcultural events in Taraba to create jobs for youths, the Emir promised to use all in his capacity to push the idea of the company to the necessary quarters as everyone in the state is worried about the rate of unemployment among their youths "despite the fact that they are educated and qualified to be gainfully employed, and want a change for the better.

"I am 100% in support of the understanding between the company and the people of Zing in using our festivals to grow our economy, and to create much needed jobs for our teeming youths," he assured the visitors.

The Permanent Secretary, Engr Dame, and the Chairman of MCDA, Mr Francis Boroma, admitted that never in the history of Taraba had an organisation showed interest in the tourism sector in the state until the company came along.

"We are willing to work with Twice As Much to make this happen as long as the plans of the company will create jobs for our youths.

"The governor knows that the sector has the potential to create jobs for our youths. How you plan to carry it out is what we want to discuss in the nearest future. 2026 is around the corner, even though we can't do much together now because this edition is only in few days time".

The grand finale of the Belle Hunting festival, one of the several religiously observed in Taraba, will take place on January 30 after several days of celebrations.

What I remember about Ogundoyin, Arisekola's roles in my dad's musical competition - Makinde



As preparation gears up towards marking the 10th anniversary of Late Olu Makinde, the son of the journalist, Oluseyi Olutade Makinde (II), said the committee will posthumously honour Alaafin of Oyo, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi (III), Arisekola Alao-Azeez, Adeseun Ogundoyin and Akanni Aluko, on February 16, 2025, at a book launch taking place in Trenchard Hall University of Ibadan, for their unreported roles in helping Makinde activate a musical competition in Ibadan in 1977.

The book reveals that if not for the financial support of the three businessmen, a crowning wouldn't have taken place and the landmark event would have been forgotten about.

The book titled "Olu Makinde: Master of His Game", also reveals how Makinde revived the career of Sina Peters, how both parted ways, and the many travails of the doyen of entertainment journalism in Nigeria.

"When we talk in terms of numbers, the amount put into the crowning; which set up Sunny Ade for greater heights in his career, should be about N300 million now. "Without their support, Alaafin wouldn't have done what he did", the author said.

"It will be a long time for Ibadan to find people like Arisekola, Ogundoyin and Akanni Aluko, popularly called the Three Musketeers then. Without them, Ibadan social gatherings were not complete. These days, except for very few individuals who actually prefer to support the entertainment industry from behind, but then, the three friends boldly showed their faces, encouraging other philanthropists to do same.

"Makinde didn't have to lobby them before they helped him. That was how the three freely helped others who deserved it. He knew only Aluko, who later introduced him to the two, and they agreed to help a journalist in need.They all deserve to be remembered for what they did to help others.

Although Makinde didn't say much about the book planning, Ambassador Dr Yemi Farounbi and Princess Aderonke Rahmat Adedoja are involved in the planning of the book launch.

Details of how the 1977 musical competition changed everything for Sunny is revealed in the book which will be launched next month at 1:30 pm in Ibadan, while reservations for seats will begin in three weeks. It is a strictly by invitation event.

Dr Farounbi will also unveil a foundation in honour of the journalist, as well as supervise the giving of awards to a few others.

Makinde worked with Morning Post, Sketch newspapers, published his own entertainment magazine, Variety Entertainer, and was famous for his punchy views in Odessa File column in Saturday Tribune.

He died in Ado Ekiti in 2015.

Four key players in the crowning glory of Sunny Ade in Ibadan, Oyo State, when he won a musical competition organised by the late Journalist, Olu Makinde, editor of the Entertainer, 47 years ago, will be honoured with recognition awards at the Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, on February 16, 2025.

The four are the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi (III), Arisekola Alao-Azeez, Chief Adeseun Ogundoyin and Chief Akanni Aluko.

The Ambassador (Dr) Yemi Farounbi-led planning committee, set to mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of Makinde, stated that Nigerians are prone to forgetting the good deeds of her citizens, but the committee will do all it can to get Nigerians to remember for always that a crowning ceremony took place because these people played their parts and many don't acknowledge them for it.

"What happened in Ibadan on April 22, 1977, was the collective actions of others who helped Olu Editor, as he was fondly called, to successfully organise an event that has not been repeated in the history of Nigerian music. As we celebrate Olu on February 16, we will celebrate those who helped him out", he said.

Details of how a musical competition changed everything for KSA is revealed in a book written by Tade Makinde (II). The book is entitled "Olu Makinde: Master of His Game".

On that day, the committee will also honour those who contributed to the 174-page book, and also give honourary awards to some individuals, as well as unveil a foundation for the journalist.

Dr Farounbi, former manager of NTA, and also former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, was instrumental in ensuring that the TV station broadcast the event live to over 30 million viewers way back '77.

Makinde worked with Morning Post, Sketch newspapers, published his own entertainment magazine, Variety Entertainer, and was a columnist (Odessa File column in Saturday Tribune).He died in 2015 in Ado Ekiti and is survived by children and grandchildren.

The Ambassador (Dr) Yemi Farounbi-led Planning Committee for book written in honour of late Olutade Makinde, the journalist who organised a musical competition in Ibadan, Oyo State, in 1977; and which was won by King Sunny Ade, has announced that the iconic Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, is the venue of the book launch, while February 16, 2025, is the launch date.

The book launch is planned to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the passing of the Journalist. Makinde died in Ado Ekiti on February 15, 2015.

The book entitled "Olu Makinde: Master of His Game", is written by his son, Tade Makinde (II), also an entertainment journalist, who is the Director of Content of AMNI Corporation, a New York-based conglomerate, and headquartered in Ibadan.

The chairman the of the committee, and also Nigeria's former ambassador to the Philippines, said he is excited to be part of a project that will celebrate his friend. "He was more than a friend to me and many others. He was a brother", he said.

Late Makinde was a columnist with the Nigerian Tribune from the late 90s until the passing of his wife, Princess Margaret Makinde in 2007. He rested the column, Odessa File, following the death of his wife, and later relocated to his Ado Ekiti hometown where he died.

Princess Aderonke Adedoja, chairperson of ARA Foundation, who has been instrumental with the planning of the event, expressed her delight to be a part of the book launch. "I am happy to help the family do something in memory of their father. I gathered he was a great journalist. God will help us and February 16, 2025, will be grand," she said.

The author was the head of the entertainment desk while at the Tribune titles for 19 years. His first book, "Fela Anikulapo Kuti: Bruised. Battered. Beloved", is available on Amazon, while his second work, which dwells extensively on what went on behind the scenes pre and post the crowning ceremony, will be his first in print.

Princess Aderonke Rahmat Adedoja, the CEO of ARA Foundation, and Chairperson of the National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), Oyo State Chapter and also the South-West Coordinator of the association, has described Engr Dotun Sanusi as the new political phenomenon in Oyo State following his remarkable achievements that have benefitted people in all facets of life, applauding his selfless service to the people.

Asiwaju Sanusi turned 56 years few days ago.

Princess Adedoja, while expressing her gratitude to God for the life and accomplishments of Asiwaju Jubril Dotun Sanusi, the owner of Ilaji Resorts in Ibadan, she described Sanusi,, as the new phenom in Oyo political dispensation to come.

Speaking through her publicist, Kehinde Gbadeyanka, she praised Asiwaju for his integrity and positive contributions to people's lives, which has made him a rare breed at this point in the life of the nation and also Oyo State. "You are a blessing in disguise", she said.

In the release, she added that "Sanusi has been recognised for his humility, leadership, accountability, and commitment to an egalitarian society, making him a shining example among others as worthy to be trusted to serve the people beyond personal ambitions. Such selfless attributes have earned him admiration among youths, adults, corporate players, individuals, and whoever."

One of Nigeria's biggest microfinance banks (names withheld) has thrown ethics under the bus as allegations of sexual harassment and fraud presently rocks three of her many branches in the South West region.

In one of the states where the training of prospective employees through the Data Entry program for new staff has been going on for five weeks, two female trainees are being blackmailed by the Divisional Manager (DM) to have sex with the senior staff or risk losing being sent to another capital city for practicals, eventually getting employed.

One of the ladies (names withheld), who pleaded with the boss to post her to where her family members live, blatantly refused to do so unless the mother of one would sleep with him. The lady has refused to do the bidding of her boss, who is also believed to have a relative (an Executive Director of Credit) at the headquarters of the bank in the South South region, where he will be protected by his uncle if any petition manages to reach the headquarters of the Microfinance bank

In another state in the same South West, an Area Manager (AM) who has severally informed her DM that he suspected that two senior staff members are slacking with their responsibilities, leaving the bank exposed to fraud, but the DM, who has the sole power to invite auditors to investigate the situation has refused to do so.

In the last one year, five Client Support Officer (CSO) have defrauded the bank to the tune of N23mn, hence the fears raised by the AM. The same DM is allegedly shagging with a junior staff who has not been meeting her target for four months as he always shifts the blame to her boss in Ogun State to protect the nonproductive staff.

Many blame the organisational structure of the bank on the owners who never allow lower staff to be heard or represented at major meetings where decisions that could affect them are taking. This power has become a tool in the hands of many DMs and AMs of the bank.
