I have written severally here on how the SE have undermined Southern interest since 1999 by always supporting the north over any bill proposal that calls for equitable distribution of resources to states especially as it concerns oil revenue.

They stood with the north to stand down 25% of oil revenue to oil producing states that was proposed by the Obasanjo government. It took the intervention of Yaradua to negotiate a 13,% derivative to oil producing states.

They stood with the north against coastal oil producing states of the SS from benefiting from offshore wells. It took a Supreme court ruling to compel the FG to pay proceeds from offshore oil and gas wells to SS coastal states.

They stood with the north to water down and make useless the Petroleum Industry Bill.

Now they are siding with same north to ensure this tax reform bill is killed so that they can continue reaping from where they did not sow.

If your governors had to rely on their own tax base to run their states , do you think they will not do everything to keep the peace and attract investors ?

Take Zamfara that has proven gold reserves that for some reason successive governors are not willing to attract investors to come and mine it. Instead the governors have been accused of aiding bandits and illegal miners to mine the gold . This has led to Zamfara being one of the most terrorised states in the country. The governors don't care because at the end of the day , Tax from the productive south will come in the end of the month for them to further loot.

Same thing your own governor in Imo is doing as you go about terrorising yourselves down there. Your terrorism has no bearing on state finances as long as it keeps flowing from Abuja .

So if you like continue. Your crooked governors are there for their pocket and pockets only.

If they had to rely on their own tax base do you think your Biafra nonesense or all those rag tag terrorist groups up north won't disappear ?

I referenced your Imo and yeast because they get far more than they contribute by a wide margin even compared to what the north contributes and receives.

Your governors and legislators are all silent because if they make noise it will expose your yeast as the least productive and contributive region and the biggest welfare queens in the polity.

Is there a bill to tax those earning above 1million Naira monthly ? Yes or No. Then we will debate from there.

Income tax is not new in Nigeria unless you are working in the grey sector.

The bill is only proposing increment in tax rate for those earning above #100,000,000.

There's no provision in that bill to increase income tax rates outside that bracket but there's provision to exempt low income earners totally from paying taxes and tax the super earners higher.

The main issue isn't the tax rate but reforming the sharing formula to have states keep 50% of their taxes.

How can you be working in Lagos and your tax is going to UGM camp in Imo?

Does that make sense?

What will then motivate these governors that sit down collecting allocations from the FG every month to fix their states ?

This is why northern and SE governors could care less if their states are burning when free money from Lagos , Rivers , Oyo, Ogun and Delta will arrive without fail at the end of the month?

They are contributing far more than any of your yeast states but getting far less.

Oyo is up there in the top 3 tax generating states after Lagos and Rivers.

There's a thread here on NL that broke down the tax generating states and how much they got back from the FG.

The yeast remains the least contributing zone in the federation but has the highest return from federal allocations ranging from 800 to 1,000% among the five states.

We are talking about the bill to tax those earning above 1million naira. It seems u are mistaking trend.

The increase in tax rate is for those earning above #100,000,000 annually set at 25%.

Do you fall under this category ?
I believe the answer is a no.

Secondly the bill scraps taxing anyone earning below #1,000,000 annually.

But that's not why the north is crying.

The north will care less if you even tax people down south earning less than #100,000 annually at 60% rate.

This is because the existing sharing formula benefits the north and the yeast who have next to zero tax base and rely on other productive and proactive tax base states.

Even at the same sharing formula , the north and yeast won't complain if the tax rate is doubled because that will translate to double their share from the current sharing formula.

Do you now understand why both the north and yeast are against the reforms ?

OP have you heard of Venezuela?

They have the largest oil reserves in the world but are dirt poor.

They share three unique traits with Nigeria

The bill is meant to reform the current tax and vat law to enable states keep 50% of what they generate .

Currently , the sharing formula considers population and landmass in distributing tax revenue .

For example, the SE got 900% of what they generated. Imo state generated only #325mil for the year ending 2023 but got #34bn from the federal purse. This represents an over 1,000% returns to Imo state.

The north is being openly honest that they will all go bankrupt if the reforms scale through but the yeast that even for some odd reason gets a much higher return are l spreading lies on why they oppose the bill citing that the bill specifically targets their petty traders that are scattered everywhere and who are considered outside the organised sector.

Note that Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Oyo and Delta contributed the highest amount to the tax revenue base and all that money was gotten from the organised sector.

Instead for these ibos to be sincere like the north and tell us that if the bill scales through their parasitic states will go bankrupt, they are allover social media spreading lies on what the bill intends to achieve which is true fiscal autonomy and responsibility to states.
