At this period most Midwest Ibos had ran away from both Benin and Asaba and had crossed into Biafra territory.

Unlike in Benue and Lokoja, Ibo refugees fleeing the pogroms in the north were never attacked by the indigenes at Benin . Instead they were provided with refreshments, food, water and words of consolation.


All that changed with the invasion of the Midwest and the highly undisciplined Biafran soldiers who went about harassing the very people who were sympathetic to them in Nigeria .
