Mr Segun Olulade, the Chairman of Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Health, said that no fewer than 470, 435 residents had been affected by the HIV virus in Lagos state.
Olulade (APC-Epe II) said this on the floor of the House as part of activities to commemorate the World AIDS’ Day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dec. 1 is World AIDS’ Day.

According to him, there is the need for all to pull efforts together to fight the disease.

“There is the need to show support to those living with AIDS; today gives us the opportunity to identify with the people living with the disease.

“It is a serious issue that cannot be ignored or treated with levity, “the chairman said.

The lawmaker said that the figure was obtained from the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency(LSACA).

The chairman called on the state government and relevant agencies to support the enlightenment programmes aimed at stemming the spread of the disease.

Mr Sola Giwa (APC-Lagos Island I) said, “The issue of the deadly disease is germane. HIV virus requires all hands on deck to eradicate its spread.

“I urge residents of the state to know that HIV /AIDS is real, there is no cure for it, and everyone should protect themselves’’.

Mr Yinka Ogundimu (APC-Agege II) urged the government and Nigerians to show care and love to people living with the disease.

Also Mr Tunde Braimoh, the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Strategy, urged the government to pay attention to other life-threatening diseases.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, said that residents needed to be aware that HIV/AIDS was real and rampant.

The House, however, called on residents to be conscious of their safety, stressing that HIV/AIDS was real and rampant.

A suicide bomber killed six people in Maiduguri, northeast Nigeria, on Friday, the country’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said.

The agency said at least 17 other people were injured and taken to hospital after the blast at a mosque during early morning prayers.

Lagos Sports boss declares supports for Governor’s Cup tennis, $80, 000 at stake

THE Director General of Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Ayodele Agbesanwa, has assured organisers of the 15th Lagos Governor’s Cup Tennis of the state government’s full support for the 15th edition of the tournament, which holds from December 5-19.

A total prize money of $80, 000 is at stake in the competition. The men’s winners in both Futures will pocket the sum of $30,000, while the women take home the sum of $50,000.

The first edition was staged during the reign of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Governor of Lagos State.

The incumbent Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, is expected to grace the finals of the tournament, the first to be staged since he assumed office in May.


Speaking during a meeting with the organisers in Lagos, Agbesanwa revealed that since he resumed duty as DG, one of his first assignments was to request for some files, which included the Lagos Governor’s Cup Tennis so as to familiarise himself with some of the contents.

He assured the organisers that the tourney has come to stay because of the tourney’s lofty and achievable objectives that would be of immense benefits to the people of Lagos State.

Agbesanwa noted that it was indeed a privilege to meet the chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Chief Pius Oluwole Akinyelure and Prince Wale Oladunjoye. He further assured the LOC of provision of vehicles for transportation purposes as requested by the organisers.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir David Lawal, has given Federal Government agencies a two-week deadline to collate and submit their procurement records for 2014 to the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) or risk government sanctions.

According to a statement from the Bureau’s Head, Public Communication, Thomas Odemwingie, the SGF gave this directive in Abuja in a keynote address before declaring open a one-day interactive session on public procurement with procurement officers of federal ministries. The session was organized by the BPP.

Represented by Dr (Mrs) Ijeoma Unaogu, a Director of Economic Policy Analysis in the office of the SGF, Eng Lawal noted that Nigeria is one of the countries whose procurement regulatory frameworks and legislations are patterned after the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) model law on public procurement.



Being a signatory to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), Nigeria’s fight against corruption, he noted, is statutorily expected to shift from corrective to preventive measures.

“This will involve ensuring strict compliance with extant regulations and guidelines on public procurement,” he stressed.

On the failure of any MDAs to submit procurement records to the BPP, he warned, “For the avoidance of doubt, this administration strictly upholds the rule of law anda as such, submission of procurement records and all other statutory requirements of the Procurement Act shall be enforced by this government. To this end, I hereby direct all MDAs to collate and submit their procurement records for 2014 to the BPP on or before Monday, the 26th of October, 2015.”

Eng Lawal asked the BPP to submit the list of ministries that fail to comply with this directive to his office “for appropriate sanctions.”

The sanctions include “suspension of officers concerned with the procurement or disposal proceeding in issue; replacement of the head or any of the members of the procuring or disposal unit of any entity or the Chairperson of the Tenders Board as the case may be; penalising the Accounting Officer of any procuring entity and temporary transfer of the procuring and disposal function of a procuring and disposing entity to a third party procurement agency or consultant.

The SGF welcomed the efforts of the BPP to collaborate with state governments in order to domesticate the Procurement Act in their respective states to ensure that the gains of the reforms transcend the federal level to the national level. “Government will take more than a passing interest in the National Public Procurement Forum on which the Bureau is already taking the lead,” he said.

He assured that the National Council on Public Procurement would be inaugurated as soon as government satisfactorily addresses the issues around the body.
