Hello...
Thanks for your contribution to this thread. Your insights have really been helpful. I have a question and would really appreciate your response.
I have a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a masters degreee in environmental toxicology. I intend pursuing a phd in the environmental sciences in the Us. However,
I have no publication so I would like to know if I stand any chance of getting a fully funded offer. Please any idea of institutions thats offer fully funded phds in the environmental sciences in the usa.
Regards.

Can you work on the publication part?

Goto your uni where you did masters, and meet your lecturers preferably your project supervisor or any lecturer you have good relationship with

I don't know about yiur school, but my mom is a lecturer, she uses/needs about 4-6 publication for her promotion.

Meet your lecturers and ask them if you can contribute to 2-4 publications.

VISA TRANSCRIPT
EMBASSY: Lagos
DATE: 03/03/2023
PROGRAMME: MSc Information Technology
SCHOOL: Washington University
COA: $21,780
FUNDING: 10% from the school
DEFICIT: Covered by my brother who is a New York attorney
VERDICT: Denied

VO: Good morning

Me: Good morning.

VO: Pass your I-20 and passport

Me: Passed it to her

VO: How old are you?

Me: 26

VO: Do you live alone

Me: No, I live with my parents — this is true because I manage and oversee my family business.

VO: How many schools did apply to?

Me: One… mentions the school

VO: typing….. then brought out the blue paper.

No question on funding, sponsorship, programme, plans after study.

I read previously that applying for just one school is a red flag. The funding balance on your i-20 what was the balance?

I read somewhere that if the funds is in a family account it should be 1.5x or more. The logic being that in case of emergency, they can sort themselves out while still fulfilling their promise to fund your education.

I think its much better for the money to be in your account if your cash is close to the COA.

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION.

Sorry boss. Really annoying when you don't even get to present your case

Nairalanders, please I need your advice on what to do. I got admission to CSUCI in November 2022 for Spring January 2023 and the amount required for F-1 visa was $35200, which was N4900000 but i had N16,000000 in my account then, when a dollar was N422. But I didn't get early appointment time. I was given August but now my date has been rescheduled to April 20 of this year and when the school sent another i-20 form to me, they used the old account statement I sent to them in December 2022. Dollar rates now fluctuates between N460-N462, which will make the $35200 to be around N16270000. My question is should I take the old account balance to the embassy or do I need to print a new one to meet up with the current dollar rates? Thanks nairalanders in advance

I'm also going for a CSU (CSULB) with similar self fund.
Pls keep us updated on your interview.
Good luck

I must commend all those that have been responding to questions on this platform.
I must say that you people are wonderful.

Please is it advisable to get loan of 80K Usd to study a masters in a STEM Course in usa?

How much per hour can someone earn while a masters student in US?

Is it true that securing a loan to study is a trap for international students in Usa and heavy burden to pay back??

Thank you in advance.

If you're going for computer science (or related disciplines) look into CSUs in California. They are very cheap and you only need half that.

30k+ ain't small money even to citizens.

It depends on what you mean but this is not exactly true. Don't get me wrong on paper, you are correct however, the rule is not implemented this way.

As long as one has classes registered for a year, you can work outside of campus during your first year. I made this mistake by following the rule you have up there but I saw and met other Nigerians who came in same time as me or even later and many of them had internships a semester after they got in with no repercussions after they graduated.

I learned my lesson that way.

Why not look I to cpt? Doesn't that give you opportunity to work off campus?

Taking ok more jobs will sound nice in theory but trust me. Their academic style isn't like here. That you can just show up during exam.

You will f*ck your mental health, body too. Very very stressful. At least have your first year tuition before leaving

You pretty much have to search on Google cos everyone's course is different.

Once you find the school, send cold mails to professors

Hello guys. What is the likelihood on a scale of 1-100 that someone who did phd in usa will get a work sponsorship and use that to remain in usa?

Also, using this same phd person as an analysis, what is the likelihood on a scale of 1-100 that his wife can be invited, and do a job that will pay her cash or off the record, because i know dependent of usa students are not allowed to work

I can answer the first part.

If you did a stem course. You will definitely get a job.
What people usually do in masters (I don't know of PhD). From the last 6months of their course, they start looking for job. If they don't find. They take an extra semester (remember most course need a minimum of 30 credit to complete, but you can take up to 59).that extra semester gives you additional 6months to look for job. If you still don't find. Activate your opt. You get additional 90days to find a job.

Every thing in this life na risk. No risk no reward. You'd definitely get a job within 1yr and 3months

Not entirely true. Your employer can file for your naturalization.
Also, you can file for yourself if you’re published/distinguished in your field.. your mentors/colleagues can write letter of recommendation for you. I think it's easier for STEM and healthcare applicants
Consult your immigration lawyer. My limited opinions are merely advisory. Good luck!

Compared to other countries... Its difficult o. But salary is not comparable to any country.

After studies, you get 1yr opt but stem gets 36months.

You have to find a job within 90days of activating opt.

If you loose your job, you have 60days to find another one.

When on opt, your company can file for H1B Visa which is a raffle, aka pure luck. The raffle is 2-4x a year.

H1b visa is valid for 3yrs which your employer can auto renew for another 3, you company can file for green card for you then.

1: If your husband is not a prospective student, he’s going to be on F2 visa.. ie stay at home chop belleful hubby
Pros: You have your partner for emotional, sexual and psychological support.
-You can start family asap
- Naija chances of getting visa are narrowing day by day
-Proof of home ties, if he stays back..you can tell VO that you come back to see him every year.
Cons:
-If you’re funded, your stipend only covers you.
-He’s tied to ur immigration status. You’re the only one who can file for him to get his work permit… only possible if you have changed your status. So he’s a rider on your visa.
-Your income must be bigger to accommodate 2 adults plus a baby on the way.. lol
-You will be the breadwinner and your hubby will be bread chopper

Omo eh. Compared to other country, there isn't any incentive to goto us oo. If you plan on naturalizing

That decision will be made at the right time. She is still hunting for position in a school, so she has no much option for now on that. When she gets to US, that decision will be made.

Oh ok 👌🏿

It doesn't matter. She can always do internship in any state not compulsorily SDstate. And she can also get internship at SD state too, so the focus should be getting funded offer first and entering US.
Hence why I listed it.
I just think going out of state for cpt/coop internship which last 3 to 6months is expensive because you will either maintain two rents or move to your place on employment only to move back within 6months.

You havent provided any solution.. have you? You could have put the same energy into finding a school for him.
You cant be an entitled brat cos you cant really afford to pay anybody for their time and expertise. I’m not here to babysit him. I asked him a tough question without insults and he responded with insults.. then I responded cos I dont care how you feel once you start hurling insults.. you shall get a truckload.

1st question?
Low GP and you’re looking for the easiest uni to get into?? Are your parents worth more $500k

So you intentionally missed this his response.??

Take time to read through what you wrote and ask yourself if you made any sense. If I have a GPA of 4.0 would I need to worry about an easy school to get into? Something tells me you are either fostered or being fostered because I don't know what parents got to do with my question.

my dear you completely missed the point of my comment. How you word your comments matter. Stop being condescending in your response. We are building a community.

Read my reply again. You'd see that i said the exact thing you wrote. But without the extra layer.

If you say. Hi, your GPA is quite low, to get admitted, you'd need a good chunk of money since the schools that accept low GPA cost alot. Btw, make sure you or your parents have $50k for COA… that’s 10% of $500k..

This is a better way to respond to people without being condescending.

Go UK thread and see how they talk to each other

I don't understand why you guys hate questions here so much. Some people don't know how to start searching...

Let's say someone asked what are the best cheap universities for low GPA.

If you have had this issue before, it cost nothing to chip in a response.
. Sometimes when they see university of California San Diego.

It can prompt them to check other nearby universities.

I swear you guys need to check Indian forums and see how they help each other. Infact they have a whole forum dedicated to showing you exactly what gpa + gre combination to get admitted.

Example.. Someone asked can I get admitted with a 7.4/10 gpa, someone responded that he got admitted with that but he needs is to Co aurther a research paper or have 4 projects

I've seen really stupid questions on their YouTube pages and people answering them without being condescending.

Honestly we need to do better and stop being hostile to every question.
