The grim figures keep rising and is expected to keep rising as scores of pilgrims still are unaccounted for. The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has disclosed that the number of Nigerian pilgrims who died as a result of the September 24 Hajj stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia, has gone up to 222 even as Sokoto and Kano states still top the list of casualties. Speaking all the way from Saudi Arabia on Sunday, NAHCON official Dr. Ibrahim Kana, said 355 Nigerians were affected in the tragedy, Daily Trust reports.
    “By the latest figures we have so far identified 222 bodies, 130 missing and three recuperating in the hospital. We are not leaving any stone unturned until we account for all Nigerians, dead or alive. Majority have been buried in Makkah. We have all the records of graves of Nigerians. The idea is that we would share this with relations who may want to visit and pray for them.
“But the DNA analysis that we would be carrying out in Nigeria in the coming weeks would provide identity for everyone. The DNA kits that we collected from the Saudi authority would be used on relations back in Nigeria. The DNA analysis would be conducted in Riyadh and we would go round the country to take blood samples from the victims’ relationships either father, mother, son or daughter,” Kana, who is the commissioner in charge of Health for the Hajj 2015, said.
He said two female pilgrims who became unconscious due to the stampede had since regained consciousness. Though they were formerly tagged unknown, they had now been found to come from Kano State, he said.
As at October 21, the death toll from the stampede was put at 2097, based on tallies by French news AFP.
However, Saudi Arabian Authority has yet to provide an updated death toll from the 769 it earlier mentioned.

Soldiers, yesterday, shot a suspected suicide
bomber dead outside a Military base in
Maiduguri, Borno State, according to a civilian
vigilante and a military source. Explosives
concealed in the suspect’s handbag detonated in
the process.
It was believed that the target of the suspect was
the Maimalari Army Barracks, the main military
base in Maiduguri, which had been hit
repeatedly in recent months by Boko Haram
terrorists.
“Soldiers at Maimalari Army Barracks this
morning (yesterday) foiled a suicide attack by a
female bomber,” Babakura Kolo, a member of
the civilian volunteer force assisting troops
against the rebels, said.
“The woman approached the barracks around
7a.m. and headed towards the gates.
“Guards at the gates asked her to stop for
security checks, but she ignored them and
continued walking towards the gates, a handbag
slung over her shoulder.
“One of the soldiers opened fire on the woman
and the handbag exploded, blowing the woman
to pieces,” he said.
A military officer in the city described the
incident as an “attempted suicide attack by Boko
Haram terrorists,” reports Vanguard.
The military source, who requested anonymity,
said the use of human bombs was a sign of the
group’s desperation and frustration.
“They are looking for every opportunity to hit
back, which is why they have resorted to soft-
target attacks on mosques and markets and such
attacks on a military base is intended to show
the terrorists are still strong,” he added.

A lecturer at the Kogi State University, Isa
Abdulganiyu, has been kidnapped.
A source who confirmed this revealed that the
lecturer was abducted on his way to his

A man, identified simply as Prophet Wale, has killed himself in a Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ona Iwa Mimo, on Otunba Bamidele Street, in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim had approached the owner of the church, a prophetess, to be part of her ministry.

He reportedly claimed to be a prophet and said he would love to assist her.

Our correspondent was told that the prophetess rejected the offer, and the victim became angry.

He was said to have grabbed a bottle, broke it and stabbed himself in the neck.

The matter was reported at the Ikotun Police Division on Wednesday.

When our correspondent visited the community on Thursday, he observed that many of the residents were reluctant to discuss the incident.

At the church, a man, who identified himself as Noah, declined comment.

He said no relatives of the suspect were available for comment.

“The prophetess family members are not available for now. My phone is also dead; so I cannot even give you my contact,” he said.

When PUNCH Metro approached the community leader, Otunba Bamidele, he said he was not aware of the incident.

“I travelled and just came back this morning; please I have nothing to say and I am not aware,” he said.

But some of the residents, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

They said the victim’s death caused commotion on the street, adding that policemen from Igando, Ikotun and Idimu divisions trooped to the street in three vans.

A witness said, “It was around 5pm. I was passing by and I saw a crowd of people on the church premises. Policemen and three police vans from Ikotun, Idimu and Igando police divisions were there.

“The police took the corpse and arrested the owner of the church. I cannot tell what led to the death because I don’t live with them. I don’t know the man. He is a stranger in this community.”

Another resident said the victim was likely to be one of those sleeping in the church.

“Many people sleep in that church and something could have led to his death. It could have been frustration and it might be something different,” he said.

A police source, however, revealed to our correspondent that the victim was from Apapa area of the state.

The source said the prophetess claimed not to have known the victim from anywhere until on the morning he entered the church and offered to join her ministry.

He said, “The owner of the church is claiming that she has never met the man before.

“She said the man just came to her and said he was a pastor from Bayelsa State and he was living in Apapa, but would like to be part of her ministry.

“She claimed that when she asked for his address, and relatives, he did not answer her.

“When the woman refused to allow him, he brought out a bottle, broke it and stabbed himself to death.”

The source said the victim allegedly stabbed himself in the neck and bled to death.

“He had a deep gash in his neck. But the woman’s testimony is still under investigation and she is currently in detention,” he added.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, confirmed the incident, adding that the deceased was a pastor of the C&S Movement.

He said, “The man’s name is Wale and he’s a prophet in the Cherubim and Seraphim Church. The incident happened on Wednesday, 23 September, 2015. Nobody knows what made him kill himself, but all those present when he committed the act have been arrested and they are helping the police with investigations. He did it in the presence of the General Overseer of the church.”
