PoliticsTime To Unbundle Fashola by donk147(op): 8:05pm On Jun 17, 2016
Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, the poster boy of the change mantra, needs to be unbundled as quickly as possible. Any time I see Fashola, he looks more confused and petrified than the last time.

Handing over three crucial ministries to one man is a disaster waiting to happen as, daily, Fashola is being demystified. He is now being called the ‘Minister of Darkness’ considering that under his leadership, Nigeria is experiencing her worst form of power outages. Fashola has blamed everybody but himself and the sooner he began to take responsibility the better for all of us.

The power situation has been an age-long problem of successive administrations and any government that solves the power problem in the country has solved 70 percent of our problems. When he assumed office, the first thing he did was to increase electricity tariff. Nigerians were paying more without getting the value for their money. Fashola should be given the.....

PoliticsHypocrisy Of June 12 Champions by donk147(op): 7:42pm On Jun 17, 2016
June 12 will forever be a memory in the life of every Nigerian. It was a day tribalism and religious sentiments were defeated as Nigerians voted for a Muslim/Muslim ticket in an election adjudged to be the most free and fair in the nation’s history. Calls have been made in recent years to make June 12 Democracy Day and not May 29, an idea I support.

However, let me point out the hypocrisy of the June 12 champions. Nigerians, especially from the South-West, have been calling on successive governments to immortalise the late MKO Abiola. Even when one of their own and the greatest beneficiary of June 12, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, was president, no move was made to immortalise Abiola. In fact, Obasanjo used every opportunity to convince people that Abiola was not the messiah and made attempts to rubbish Abiola anytime he travelled abroad. When former President Goodluck Jonathan made an attempt to name University of Lagos after MKO Abiola ,it was the same people from the South-West that opposed it. Maybe, because they didn’t like the face of Jonathan. If it was a school in the North that Jonathan attempted to name and was....

PoliticsIs This The Beginning Of The End For Labour? by donk147(op): 6:49pm On May 27, 2016
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) must be regretting its ill-fated decision to embark on a strike action over the fuel price increase. The leaders of the NLC on an ego trip wanted to test their popularity and failed miserably.

Efforts to shut down the country through the strike were not helped by the fact that NLC is factionalised and did not have the support of major labour unions such as the Trade Union Congress (TUC), National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and oil and gas sector workers.

When the Federal government increased electricity tariffs and the issue of casualisation of staff, especially in Banks, NLC was......

PoliticsWho Is The National Chairman Of The PDP? by donk147(op): 5:39pm On May 25, 2016
The leadership crisis in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday resulted in a judicial stalemate with two courts of co-ordinate jurisdictions issuing separate and contradictory orders in support of the contending parties.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, in Lagos, yesterday declared as null and void the caretaker committee constituted over the weekend by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to take over the affairs of the party from its acting national chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff.

Justice Buba also directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, to enforce his order and also arrest whoever parades himself as a member of the caretaker committee of the party.

The judge held that the committee headed by a former governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, was appointed in violation of an order he made on May 12, this year.

The court had in the said order restrained the party from conducting elections into offices of the national chairman, national secretary and national auditor pending hearing and determination of the suit.

The judge had also stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring the election.

Justice Buba stated he would not allow his order to be violated without consequence, adding that he had an obligation to ensure his directives were obeyed.

“No court can make an order in vain,” he held.

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has restrained embattled Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Secretary, Professor Rufai Oladipo from parading themselves as officers of the party.

The court, which was presided over by Justice Mohammed Liman, also restrained other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP from parading themselves as officers of the party.

CrimeWho Is Behind The Niger Delta Avengers? by donk147(op): 4:55pm On May 25, 2016
The umbrella body of Ijaw youths worldwide, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), weekend exonerated former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, from any involvement in the creation of the new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers.

An ex-militant leader, Israel Akpodoro, who claimed to be the national president of National Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-Agitators,had on Friday alleged that former President Jonathan, founded the Niger Delta Avengers.

The Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) in a statement issued yesterday in Yenagoa and signed by its spokesman, Comrade Eric Omare, described the accuser, Israel Akpodoro, as an unknown ex-militant that has no pedigree in the Niger Delta region.

According to the IYC, “The allegation that the Niger Delta Avengers was formed by former President Jonathan in a meeting he attended in January 2015 preparatory to the 2015 election to make the country ungovernable for his successor is absolutely untrue. It is nonsensical to imagine that former President Jonathan who conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent even before the final result was announced would make such a plan.

“In the first place, the January 2015 meeting of ex-agitators and stakeholders in the Niger Delta region was....

PoliticsN56,000 Minimum Wage: Realistic Or Not? by donk147(op): 7:25pm On May 06, 2016
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is proposing a N56, 000 minimum wage for its workers. According to them, the minimum wage is supposed to be reviewed every five years. It was last reviewed in 2011. However, the new proposal has generated debates across the divide in the country. I think the increase is a right step in the right direction, because in the present harsh economic realities, 18,000 is no longer acceptable, with the increasing house rents, school fees, food stuff prices on the increase, even bride price on the increase. The take home pay can no longer take them home. I propose a N100, 000 minimum wage as even the N56, 000 will not be enough.

A civil servant with wives and children living on N18, 000 a month is either a magician or a thief. In fact, it encourages stealing and corruption, how can you expect him to pay his house rent, electricity bills, and children’s school fees? It’s a well-known fact that governors are wasteful in Nigeria and that can be attributed to one of the major reasons they cannot pay salaries. Some governors’ mistress’ recharge card allowance in a month is more than N18, 000. Governors should put on their thinking cap and improve on the internally generated revenue in their states.

On the other hand, some states are finding it difficult to pay 18,000 and telling them to pay N56, 000 will be almost impossible. With the present economic realities, it may be hard for some states to implement.

For the N56, 000 to work, the governors need to take the bull by the horn and downsize their workforce. Most states have over bloated workforce with many redundant staff. Labour should be understanding in this regard. N56, 000 for the present workforce will not work. Something has got to give. The governors on their part need to reduce their number of aides and special advisers in line with the present economic realities and should jettison ego projects like building of airports or massive signboard that will not put food on the table of their citizens.

CrimeInsecurity: 2 Policemen Kidnapped In Lagos by donk147(op): 6:40pm On May 04, 2016
Two policemen attached to Owutu police station, Owutu, in Ikorodu area of Lagos State have been kidnapped by gunmen, on Sunday.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the policemen were four in number and on duty when the gunmen attacked them but two of the policemen escaped while luck ran out on one sergeant and one corporal.

The sergeant identified as Olorunfemi whose family lives in Ibadan and the corporal were said to have been moved to an unknown destination. While some people believed that they were kidnapped, some felt they were allegedly attacked by ritualists because their abductors had not made any call across to any of the victims family.

PoliticsHow Long Will FG Continue To Pay For Petrol Subsidy? by donk147(op): 2:52pm On May 04, 2016
Following the rise in crude oil price to about $47 a barrel, the federal government will resume the payment of subsidy on petrol as the product is now selling below the expected open market price, the pricing template of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) has shown.

According to the updated template the agency released in Abuja, which is expected to cover the second quarter of 2016, the expected open market price of petrol has risen to N99.38 per litre for independent and major oil marketers, and N98.62 per litre for retail outlets belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The expected open market price is the actual price of the product taking into consideration all market elements, which include landing cost and distribution margins, without subsidy element.

However, a source within the PPPRA told LEADERSHIP exclusively last night that the pump price of fuel remains N86.50 for major and independent marketers, and N86 for NNPC retail outlets, adding that the difference would be taken care of through subsidy payment.

The source noted that the subsidy payment would, however, not be at any extra cost or burden to the federal government, explaining that it would be funded from the savings made during the first quarter (Q1) when the market was over-recovering, that is, selling above expected open market price due to low oil price.

Minister of state for petroleum resources, Dr. Ibe Kachkwu, had disclosed that about N100 billion had been saved from over-recovery, saying the fund would be.....

CelebritiesTiwa Savage And Teebillz: How Did It Go Wrong? by donk147(op): 5:29pm On May 03, 2016
Tiwa Savage has opened up on her marriage to her former manager, Tunji Balogun aka Teebillz, revealing that the marriage with is over.

Her husband on Thursday posted a series of shocking reports on Instagram, accusing the Marvin 1st lady of infidelity and not caring about him after which he made a suicide attempt.

In an emotional plea, stating what transpired amidst sobs, Tiwa who has a baby, Jamal with her husband, said Teebillz was suicidal and she had known that the marriage would not work. She denied sleeping with the people he mentioned and accused him of having an affair.

According to her, “For the past two months, TJ and I have not been together, it was something we were working through, but I knew this marriage would not work. I haven’t spoken to TJ in about a week, and we were supposed to get some passports for my son. He was reading the messages and he wasn’t responding. I begged him to be friends, and let’s be good parents to Jamil. He didn’t respond.

“I covered up for a lot of hurt in our relationship. Just before I went to Jamaica, I found out that I was pregnant. We were just trying to find out how we were going to manage another baby so soon. I got to London, on a 10-hour flight to shoot a video with Busy Signal (Reggae Artiste). While doing my makeup, I found out I was bleeding and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital, and we were trying to call TJ to tell him what happened. While we were sleeping at 2am, a number called him saved as Edible Catering….I checked his phone, and the number was asking him if she can come to his hotel. She responded that He (TJ) knocked her out last night, that he was a great night. I confronted him, and he said he took another woman to the hotel.”

PoliticsCCT Trial: Saraki Alleges Plot To Remove Him by donk147(op): 1:30pm On Apr 26, 2016
The office of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, had yesterday raised the alarm over alleged plots by his opponents to force him out of office.

The Senate President made the announcement yesterday through his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Mr. Yusuf Olaniyonu.

“The Office of Senate President has alerted members of the public on the plan by some politicians to create public disorder tomorrow through a sponsored demonstration that will seek to ground human and vehicular activities on some major streets of Abuja, particularly, those leading to the National Assembly Complex.

“We have information that the sponsors have been deploying resources to ensure that a sizable crowd was mobilized to create chaos, confusion and tension around the streets of Abuja. Money and other materials are being provided for the organizers by the sponsors.

“Their aim, as we have earlier stated, is to further create an atmosphere of confusion by forcing the Senators to move against their leadership, particularly, the Senate President”, he stated.

According to him, “We have insisted that while Nigerians have the inalienable right to express their opinion, move and associate freely with others, so as to convey their wishes and aspirations to their leaders, they should avoid being used by those who have ulterior motives, particularly those who want to settle political scores on the streets instead of the floor of the Senate”.

The Office stated that “Our concern is to warn that those who are recruiting others to protest and their recruits should not create a situation of breakdown of law and order or create an atmosphere that will be seized by hoodlums to bring about needless crisis.

“We therefore call on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, his officers and men to prevent any incident that can be used to wreak havoc on the generality of the people or on public institutions and facilities. Nigerian should learn to respect due process and allow the rule of law to take its natural course”.

CrimeHow 7 Relatives, Including Children Were Killed by donk147(op): 11:39am On Apr 26, 2016
A string of shootings, apparently "execution-style," killed at least seven Ohio family members, two of them children, investigators and local news agencies reported Friday.

"This is not an active shooter situation, however no arrests have been made," Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader said in a joint statement. Investigators would not confirm whether a gunman was among the dead, but said they were conducting a series of search warrants.

They discovered the remains in three different homes along the same road in Piketon. At least two babies, one of them 5 days old and the other 6 months old, lived in one of the homes, a Pike County victims' advocate told the Chillicothe Gazette. He said many extended family members in the area were frightened for their safety.

The family members who died had attended nearby Union Hill Church for years, according to Pastor Phil Fulton. "They kind of dropped by the wayside probably three, four years ago, maybe... The kids seemed friendly, always you know, just good kids, seemed like," the pastor told WKRC.

Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigation sent more than a dozen agents to the scene, officials told Fox 28 in Columbus.

The FBI in Cincinnati confirmed it offered help to the Pike County Sheriff's Office. Adams County Ohio Valley Schools briefly went on lockdown, Fox 19 in Cincinnati adds.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich called the reports "tragic beyond....

A data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), yesterday showed that over two years after the privatisation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) the 11 distribution companies (Discos) have only installed prepaid meters for only 403,255 electricity customers, while about 2.9 million customers remain unmetered out of a total of 6, 159, 775 customer base.

The statistics showed that of the 403,255 meters installed, customers paid for the procurmenet of 251,531 under the Credited Advance Payment for Metering Initiative (CAPMI) while the Discos have actually procured only 151,724 meters for customers at their own expense.

The data which indicated that about 50 per cent of electricity consumers are still without meters, was contained in a presentation to the operators on the level of metering in the sector. The data showed that that of the 6,159,775 number of customers with accounts, only 3,206,599 have been provided with meters, leaving a huge metering gap of 2,955,176.

PoliticsFayose Vs Aluko: What's Next? by donk147(op): 6:41pm On Apr 08, 2016
Last week, Nigerians were treated to another round of drama when clips emerged that Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose and former PDP secretary in the state, Tope Aluko have reconciled. It will be recalled that Aluko earned himself a front seat for clowns when he was singing like a bird exposing how they rigged the Ekiti Gubernitorial elections. By the way, Governor Fayose has still not given a satisfactory response to the rigging allegations. Many Nigerians, including me were expecting that after the revelations, Aluko will toe the path of other PDP chieftains by visiting one of the prisons in the country, but alas he has been working about a free man.

Then last week, Aluko further confirmed to us why he is indeed one of the biggest clowns in the country when on TV we saw according to him an arranged reconciliation. However watching the supposed reconciliation, everything looks fishy to me, from the surprised look on Aluko’s face when he saw the press filming Fayose putting his hands on the shoulders of Aluko saying, this is my boy, calling somebody’s father my boy on National TV, chai…

The next day, Aluko addressed a press conference where he denied the reconciliation saying he was setup. Another twist emerged from the story on Wednesday when the immediate factional speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon Dele Olugbemi, disclosed that he actually brokered the peace deal and gave details on how Aluko prostrated and begged the governor for forgiveness. Responding to the allegations, Aluko said: “It is all lies. It is part of the plot to.....

PoliticsAluko's Many Tales: Did Fayose Actually Stage-manage Their Reconciliation? by donk147(op): 6:06pm On Apr 06, 2016
The embattled Ekiti politician, Dr. Temitope Aluko, who went on television to spill the beans on how the 2014 governorship election was manipulated with money and the military in favour of Governor Ayo Fayose, yesterday said he was hoodwinked into the purported reconciliation brokered at the weekend in Lagos.

Aluko, who made the revelation at a press conference in Lagos, said Governor Fayose stage-managed the purported reconciliation to rubbish the startling revelation he earlier made about his election.

Aluko said, “I need to emphasise that all that transpired at Eko Hotel on that fateful was an organised propaganda, drama to stain my image and malign my integrity; and I believe it would be a good script for Nollywood Act.”

He explained that,” I received a call from two senior members of the party; one of them is a serving senator and the other one a former governor. I was told to come to Eko Hotel to meet with them and I went in company of my wife.

“We were half way into the discussion and I was shocked to see Governor Ayo Fayose walk into the meeting at that point. It was at this point that my wife entered to inform me that she noticed the presence of pressmen downstairs and that there was a problem. But Fayose that interrupted her and said, ‘Madam there is no problem, but my wife insisted that she overheard them say they were invited by an SMS from Governor Fayose ‘because.....

PoliticsI Underestimated Challenge Of Being Governor – El-rufai by donk147(op): 7:34pm On Apr 03, 2016
For the first time in 10 months, Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai sat for two hours to field questions from journalists. The governor he was wrong to think being a minister and governor were the same and also took time to clear the air on some of his controversial policies including the religious regulation Bill. MIDAT JOSEPH was there for LEADERSHIP Sunday.

How has it been running a complex state like Kaduna for the past 10 months?

I want to say it has been an interesting and successful journey and we are grateful to the Almighty God for his intervention in the state that led to our election. I know we got elected because the majority of the people of the state wanted a change because the way things were going was not acceptable to them and that is why they all came out to vote for us. We are very grateful.

This is the toughest time in Nigerian history to be a state governor, particularly in states that have been ruled by the PDP for a long period of time. Taking over from a system that has institutionalised itself in 16 years and trying to change direction is always tough. But in addition, we took over at the time crude oil price had collapsed by 70 per cent and we have inherited structures of government and machineries of government but most importantly, an attitude in the public service and within the larger community of a country that has been selling crude oil at $100 per barrel. So, expectations remain high while the revenues are very low. The third reason is that I never expected that running a state would be very different from being a.....

PoliticsCan PDP Produce Senate President If Saraki Is Removed? by donk147(op): 7:09pm On Apr 01, 2016
Unless the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) rallies round the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and save him from being removed from office, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may produce his replacement, Senator Peter Nwaboshi has said.

Nwaboshi, who currently represents Delta North Senatorial District at the National Assembly made this remark yesterday while appraising the travail of the senate president and how he is being abandoned by the party.

The lawmaker expressed optimism that Saraki has a good case in his ongoing travail before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) but he noted that if the APC allows him to be removed from office, the PDP will produce the next Senate President.

Speaking against the background that some lawmakers loyal to Saraki have been meeting on the auspices of Like Minds to rally round Saraki in case the unexpected happens, he stated that “I wish APC the best of luck if they are making that wild goose chase.”

He added that “But I want you to mark what I’m saying; If, but God forbid, because we don’t see it coming, by chance Saraki is removed; I can tell you that PDP will produce the next Senate President.”

While being reminded that the feat would be difficult for the PDP to achieve in view of its minority position in the Senate, the politician who is also a former PDP chairman in Delta State explained that “We only need three and we have it. The calculation is very clear to me. The calculation is very clear for PDP. We know what it will.....

PoliticsCCT Trial: Why Saraki Hire Foreign Investigators, Forensic Experts by donk147(op): 8:39pm On Mar 31, 2016
There are indications that the Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, may have decided to squarely engage the prosecution in the suit filed against him by the federal government over his asset declarations when he was governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2011.

LEADERSHIP yesterday gathered that as an indication of his readiness to defend his reputation, the Senate President, has flown in a group of experts from the United States, Israel and one of the Scandinavian countries to provide ‘specialised services’ to his team of lawyers led by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN.

According to a source, the experts are not lawyers but are crack investigators, forensic and handwriting specialists whose role will be to help get more information on the witnesses and documents that have already been filed before the tribunal by the prosecution.

The experts, are believed to have arrived on Monday and immediately had a preliminary meeting with the Senate President’s team on Monday in Lagos. They are also to move to Abuja any moment from now.

“ The investigators will ferret out and scrutinise thoroughly all available information on the eight prosecution witnesses, including their school records, service records from their past and present places of employment and personal information that may help the defence team in the course of the trial. PoliticsIs Wike Playing Politics With The Lives Of Rivers People? by donk147(op): 8:07pm On Mar 30, 2016
Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has accused Rivers State governor, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike of playing politics with the development and lives of the people of the state.

He also accused Wike of attempting without success to denigrate and tarnish his towering image, person and laudable, landmark achievements while he served as governor of the state.

Amaechi, who made the accusations in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by his media office, expressed regrets that the governor linked the killing of innocent members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other indigenes of the state to cultism.

The statement reads in part, “We watched with disgust and disbelief the recent television interview of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, excerpts of which had also been used in some newspapers.

“It was the typical Wike, twisting, butchering and turning the truth upside down; and in most cases telling outright deceptive lies in his failed bid to denigrate, tarnish and rubbish the towering image, person and laudable, landmark achievements of his predecessor and now Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

“Most troubling, was Wike’s propensity, without any qualms whatsoever, to play politics with the safety and security of the lives of Rivers people. This is indeed most worrisome. It is no secret that Wike plays politics with development, the welfare and well-being of Rivers people. But no government should play politics with the safety and security of its citizens like Wike is sadly and shamelessly doing.
