Nairaland GeneralNigeria Economy: Buhari Gave Us Mandate To Target North -w/bank by Donkuro(op): 12:30pm On Oct 13, 2017
The World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim revealed Thursday in an interview with Punch Newspaper reporter that President Muhammadu Buhari gave the bank definite instruction to focus on the north of Nigeria in his economic policy,

As a result, Jim said that the bank had concentrated on the northern region of Nigeria in line with Buhari’s directive. Kim and the Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who spoke at separate press conferences in Washington DC, United States, also advised Buhari to invest in things that would enhance economic growth.

The President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim, said on Thursday that the bank had concentrated on the northern region of Nigeria in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s request.

Kim and the Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who spoke at separate press conferences in Washington DC, United States, also advised Buhari to invest in things that would enhance economic growth.

Kim said, “You know, in my very first meeting with President Buhari he said specifically that he would like us to shift our focus to the northern region of Nigeria and we’ve done that. Now, it has been very difficult. The work there has been very difficult.

“I think Nigeria, of course, has suffered from the dropping oil prices. I think things are just now getting better. But the conversation we need to have with Nigeria, I think, is in many ways related to the theme that I brought to the table just this past week, which is an investment in human capital. The percentage of the Gross Domestic Product that Nigeria spends on healthcare is less than one percent.”

He added, “Despite that, there is so much turbulence in the northern part of the country, and there is the hit that was taken from the drop in the oil prices. Nigeria has to think ahead and invest in its people. Investing in the things that will allow Nigeria to be a thriving, rapidly growing economy in the future is what the country has to focus on right now.”

Kim also said, “Focusing on the northern part of Nigeria, we hope that as commodity prices stabilise and oil prices come back up, the economy will grow a bit more. But very, very much important is the need to focus on what the drivers of growth in the future will be.”

According to the World Bank boss, the bank will invest in human capital in other parts of Africa in order to prepare the continent for the next phase of growth.

Lagarde, in her remarks, said Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria, had posted suboptimal growth in recent times.

The growth figures, she said, were far too small considering the huge demographic potential of Nigeria and other countries in the region.

As a result, she said the IMF would be engaging ministers of finance and central bank governors from the region attending the annual World Bank and IMF meetings on how they could boost and stabilize economic growth.

PoliticsIPOB, Opposition’s Tool To Destabilise Nigeria – FG by Donkuro(op): 8:50am On Sep 19, 2017
BY JONATHAN NDA- ISAIAH, MUYIWA OYINLOLA, AHURAKA ISAH, JULIANA AGBO, Abuja, ISAIAH BENJAMIN, Kaduna and MATTHIAS NWOGU, UMUAHIA –

The federal government has described the activities of members of the indigenous people of biafra (IPOB) as an orchestrated plot by opposition elements to destabilise the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

It said those behind the sinister plan are the politically disgruntled treasury looters who think that by sponsoring IPOB to disrupt Nigeria and cause confusion, they can be able to evade justice and get themselves free to loot the country dry again.

Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who made government’s position known yesterday in Lagos, urged Nigerians to understand that against popular belief, “IPOB was not set up to fight for the right of anyone or group, but as a tool to destabilize the nation, divert attention from the efforts of the Buhari Administration and obliterate the laudable achievements of the administration.

“IPOB is being sponsored by those I will call the Coalition of the politically disgruntled and the treasury looters. They believe that by sponsoring this group to destabilize the country and trigger chaos, they will realise their ambition of escaping justice and then be free to dip their hands into the nation’s treasury again”, he added.

Speaking to journalists on the state of the nation, especially on the recent upheaval in the South East following the clampdown on the group by Operation Python Dance II, the minister noted that the past few days had been a trying one for the country, “with the activities of the so-called IPOB reaching a crescendo and threatening the unity of our dear nation, Nigeria.

“A rag tag mob that calls itself IPOB and its gullible supporters felt they could seize a large swathe of the Nigerian territory, set up parallel military and para-military organizations, mount road blocks and even confront the Nigerian military. Their leader openly solicits for weapons and incites hatred and violence”, he stated.

He however disclosed that “Some of the group’s atrocities have been well documented by the military, which has labelled IPOB a terrorist organization”.

According to the minister, such atrocities include the formation of a biafra secret service, claimed formation of biafra national guard, unauthorised blocking of public access roads, extortion of money from innocent civilians at illegal road blocks, as well as possession and use of weapons (stones, molotov cocktails, machetes and broken bottles among others) on a military patrol on 10 September, 2017.

He noted that IPOB engaged in physical confrontation with troops at a check point on 11 September 2017, during which they attempted to snatch soldiers’ rifles, and carried out an attack on a military check point on September 1, 2017.

He, however, stated that no nation, including Nigeria will allow that to happen unchallenged, stressing that the fact that Boko Haram festered because it was not decisively tackled by the immediate past administration meant the nation should never again give room for any organisation to threaten the corporate existence of Nigeria.

Mohammed commended the Nigerian military “for once again living up to its constitutional responsibility”, noting that but for its quick and decisive intervention, IPOB could have set the nation on fire.

He also lauded the governors of the states in the South East for proscribing IPOB, saying the step, “though long overdue, is still commendable”.

He noted that the activities of IPOB, which became heightened with the advent of the current administration, have been unrelenting since then.

“If this is coincidental, then that coincidence is uncanny, at the least. Remember that Nnamdi Kanu, who led a protest at the Nigeria House in London against Boko Haram insurgency and in support of Nigeria’s unity, under the Jonathan administration, has suddenly metamorphosed into an IPOB monster that will rather set the nation ablaze”, he pointed out.

Mohammed further warned against the group’s next line of action, which he said is to “externalize their lies and propaganda”.

He continued: “Now they are writing to the governments and the national parliaments of some Western nations to give the impression that they are victims of an ethno-sectarian violence orchestrated by the government, hence they need protection.

“This is a blatant lie. It is not in the agenda of this Administration to suppress its citizens for whatever reasons. Not even the excesses of some people on the Social Media have forced the government to do anything that will stifle press freedom or freedom of expression. The truth is that IPOB is being sponsored to destabilize our nation. It serves no other purpose beyond that”.

The former APC spokesperson also noted that IPOB is also engaging in a massive harvesting of gory videos from the distant past and from other lands to hoodwink the public, and in particular the international community, into believing that they are the victims of state-sponsored violence.

Such videos, which have very high emotive quotient, he said, are circulating on the social media, just as he called on every Nigerian to subject all such videos to the greatest scrutiny so as not to be misled.

“In particular, we urge the international community not to jump to any conclusion on the basis of such videos”, he said.

PoliticsInsurers Pay N5bn Claims To Lagos, Benue Flood Victims by Donkuro(op): 8:40am On Sep 19, 2017
As the flood continues to cause havoc across the country, owners of properties affected by the deluge and storms in Lagos and Benue States have been compensated by insurers to the tune of about N5billion, LEADERSHIP has exclusively learnt.

While insurers have paid most victims who had earlier submitted the necessary documentation in Victoria Island, Ikoyi,Lekki, Ajah and other areas of Lagos, others who processed their claims later are on the verge of getting their claims.

And with the rainy season still here, there are serious indications that more claims on flood insurance policy might still come before the year runs out.

This, LEADERSHIP learnt, was a huge increase from about N200 million claims made by flood policyholders in 2016.

Market observers said this increase was the effect of climate change which is increasing ocean surge and water levels, thus making rivers overflow their banks, reigning havoc on people and properties along river lines.

And with insurers willing to pay the claims despite that it is huge, analysts believe underwriters are now alive to their civic responsibility of paying genuine claims as and when due, while also believing there is a gradual increase in the number of insurance subscribers.

It was gathered that the reason for such high claims in Lagos could be connected to the fact that the areas affected are housed by educated and informed people who value insurance.

It was also learnt that most of the claims made are on household items and buildings, while companies made claims on damaged buildings, expensive machines and office items affected by the flood.

The story is, however, different in Markurdi, the Benue State capital, where the flood took place almost the same time, as majority of houses and farmlands affected have no form of insurance cover.

Only few farmlands, according to findings, have agric insurance purchased from Nigeria Agriculture Insurance Commission (NAIC) and some insurance outfits.

To this end, there was not much claims from those areas even as majority of them are unaware of the existence of flood insurance policy.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP, the Managing Director of Linkage Assurance PLC, Mr. Pius Apere, said while those properties affected by flood in Lagos have insurance cover because most of the property owners were elitists, most of the flood victims in Benue State are poor people who may have never heard of insurance or don’t value insurance.

He urged insurance companies to increase awareness, especially at the grassroots so that people will not have to be waiting on government for assistance whenever disasters like flood occur.

Apere said, “Insurance companies have to do more to increase awareness because most people always affected by flood and special perils are not elitists, they are poor people. Everybody always believes it cannot happen, but now it has happened.

“So, insurers need to go to the grassroots to increase awareness in this regard. People must be aware that they are going to get certain amount when they insure with a small premium compared to the claims that will come out of that policy”.

On his part, the national president, Association of Registered Insurance Agents of Nigeria(ARIAN), Mr. Gbadebo Olameru, said while the activities of National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA) is commendable during flooding among other mishaps, insurance remains the only viable risk mitigation mechanism as it returns the victims back to the position he was before the disaster struck.

Government assistance, he pointed out, is only meagre compared to what insurers would pay as claims, advising Nigerians to always insure their assets and lives, because natural disasters don’t announce when it will strike.

Olameru said his association is embarking on an insurance awareness across the country to sensitise Nigerians on Fire insurance and Special Perils, which includes riots and flood.

“If government, NGOs or individuals assist victims of natural disasters, they will only give them meagre that will not be enough, but insurance will return you back to the position you were before the flood, with a token premium”, he pointed out.

For the Managing Director, Law Union and Rock Insurance PLC, Mr. Jide Orimolade, the rates charged on flood insurance varies from one area to the other, noting that the rate which insurance companies will charge residents of Victoria Island would be higher than that of people residing in Ikeja area of Lagos.

Earlier, the Chairman of Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), Mr. Eddie Efekoha, had confirmed that insured victims have started turning in their claims to the insurance companies where their properties were insured.

He said flood is often an extension of fire cover, adding that most insurance companies do offer the cover for free, especially in areas not prone to flood.

According to the 2015 NIA Insurance Digest, over 20 claimants filed flood claims in 2015, amounting to over N168.44 million. The report revealed that International Energy Insurance Plc, paid the largest claim of N23.11 million, followed by Ensure Insurance Plc, which paid N22.56 million.

Meanwhile, insurance firms are now increasing premium rates for flood insurance by 50 per cent in response to increased flooding incidences across the country.

The increase is connected to the massive claims that besieged insurance operators, especially after floods in Lekki area of Lagos.
