With barley 11 days to their FIFA Women World Cup group opener against Australia, Super Falcons coach, Edwin Okon has stated that his wards will not have any fear of the big teams in group D tagged the ‘group of death’.
Okon, was speaking after the hosts of the tournament Canada held the Super Falcons to a goalless draw Monday in Downsview Park, Toronto Canada. He said that the friendly was good for the team, adding that they have noticed some lapses, which will be correct when they taken on Australia on June 8 in Vancouver.
Edwin Okon
“This match was very good for us. It is a grade A friendly, we have always wanted. With our our performance in this game, we have no fear of playing against any side in the tournament,” said the coach.
“Generally the girls played well, we will go back to the drawing board to see how to correct the lapses noticed before our next friendly game. It was a good game for us,” Okon told www.thenff.com.
With a tightly knit defence and fast attack breaks, the Super Falcons revealed a glimpse of what their group opponents, USA, Sweden and Australia should expect from them in the tournament in which they have been dubbed the dark horse.
Canadian coach John Herdman confirmed that the Super Falcons will be a coaches nightmare because of their defensive tactics. Also Canadian central defender, Kadeisha Buchanan added that the Super Falcons are one of the most physical teams they have ever faced. Buchanan, is familiar with Oshoala. Both played in the 2014 under-20 World Cup in Canada last year, though they didn’t face each other.

PoliticsLast Days Of President Jonathan In Aso Rock by DONSIA(op): 2:15am On May 24, 2015
In the run up to the presidential election on March 28, 2015, figures obtained from the protocol department of the Presidential Villa indicated that more than two thousand visitors visited President Goodluck Jonathan on the average in a week. This figures do not include visitors that met with the president in his official residence in the Villa. Neither do they include those he met outside the official residence but within the precincts of the Presidential Villa. It was perhaps the number and quality of people who thronged to the Villa on daily basis and the assurances they gave the president during the run up to the presidential election that informed the confidence he displayed as the election drew nearer that he was going to win.
But on the Sunday after the presidential election when collation of votes had begun and it appeared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was not doing well and was, in fact, trailing behind the All Progressives Congress at the polls, less than 30 persons, apart from some security personnel and aides of the president, attended the Aso Rock Chapel which had hitherto been a beehive of activities every Sunday.

The above scenarios represent the reality at the Presidential Villa since Jonathan lost the presidential election to the candidate of the APC, General Muhammadu Buhari. Although official engagements of the president are expected to slow down as he prepares to hand over to the incoming government, what many observers find very curious is the sudden abandonment of Jonathan by people who, some months ago, were frequent visitors to the Villa and some even reportedly vowed to swim and sink with the president.

But there are precedents to this kind of swift switch of loyalty. Shortly after General Sani Abacha died in mysterious circumstance in 1998, many of those who dressed him in the robe of infallibility and urged him on to transmute from a military ruler to a civilian leader did a 360 degree turn around and condemned him in the harshest of terms.
So, though Jonathan was said to have been stung by the sudden abandonment of people he had considered his friends, he was said to have recovered from the betrayal and accepted his fate with stoicism. One of the earliest callers to the Villa shortly after the president made the telephone call to Buhari to concede defeat told Sunday Vanguard that, at that moment, the president appeared downcast.

“When former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, led a delegation from the National Peace Committee on the presidential election to visit President Jonathan shortly after he called General Buhari, the president the committee members met was not someone who was pained by his defeat but he was more devastated by the betrayal of the people whom he called friends. He kept making reference to how treacherous human beings are and vowed that, as a zoologist, may be he would go and study animals more and see whether they have the same level of treachery as human beings. He was so passionate about it so much so that a member of the Peace Committee was led to tears”, a member of the committee in attendance at the meeting told Sunday Vanguard.
Having overcome the shock of the betrayal, Jonathan set the ball rolling with the task of winding down his administration. At the first Federal Executive Council meeting after his defeat at the polls, the tension that enveloped the Council Chambers could be sliced with a knife. The president, who was used to wearing a smile on his face almost perpetually, carried a very serious mien comparable only to the day he assumed office as Acting President following the long absence of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. The conviviality that pervaded the Council Chambers was absent. It was one Council meeting that no member was seen with smile on his face and no banter was exchanged.

Sack out of the blues

But Jonathan’s shrinking presidency is not without some actions. Against all expectations, the president sacked Inspector General of Police Suleiman Abbas without any slight hint that such action was coming. Though no reason was given for the removal of the Inspector General of Police, it may not be unconnected with the IGP’s unabashed switch of loyalty to the president-elect when he led other policemen to provide security at the occasion by the Independent National Electoral Commission to provide certificate of return to the APC candidate. The explanation by the president during last Tuesday’s Council of State meeting when he told members that the former IGP had tolerated indiscipline within the force may have been a subtle way of confirming this allegation that had been in the public domain.

Though the government of Jonathan is gradually winding down, the gale of sack of high government officials has continued. On March 28, the president announced the sack of the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Alhaji Habib Abdullahi, while replacing him with Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero, the first son of the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero. Perhaps as a way of rewarding one of his ministers, the president also appointed Mrs Asabe Asmau Ahmed as the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Equalisation Funds. Mrs. Ahmed, who is currently the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, took over from Sharon Adefunke Kasali, who has been Executive Secretary of PEF since 2007 and whose tenure was embroiled in controversy as some staff of the agency alleged that she had over stayed her term.

The new PEF Executive Secretary hails from Niger State and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, respectively and is seen as one of the most loyal ministers in the Jonathan administration that worked so hard for the success of the president’s candidacy at the polls in her state.

Criticism

He has also appointed the former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, as the Chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission. Expectedly, some of these decisions and appointments have elicited condemnation and criticism; it appears to be the president’s way of saying that “though I may be leaving in the next few weeks, I intend to use my presidential powers to the very last minute of my stay in office”.

If there was any doubt about the president’s desire to carry out his duties to the last minute, such doubt was put to rest, penultimate Wednesday, when the Minister of National Planning and Chairman of the Technical Committee of Jonathan’s Transition Committee, warned the APC against setting up a parallel government.

Such tough talk appears to be the spasm of an animal in the throes of death. To underscore the fact that the desertion of the president by people he had not too far in the past referred to as friends is without any exception, one of the closest persons to Jonathan while his presidency lasted, a multibillionaire businessman did not only switch loyalty as soon as the president lost the election, but also sensationally pledged loyalty to the incoming president, declaring that his election was an act of God. The treachery inherent in this declaration is that the same businessman, who was almost on every trip with Jonathan, had on several occasions declared that the president was chosen by God and any body opposed to him was opposed to God!.

Although the presidency had continued to put on an air of lack of concern at the sudden turn of events, especially the desertion of the president by people he had called friends, Jonathan appears to have accepted his fate with equanimity and seems to be better prepared to live with this hard fact than some of his lieutenants. During a thanksgiving/farewell service organized for the president, last Sunday, to mark the end of his tour of duty, he publicly revealed what has so far remained a hushed tone discussion among the staff of the Villa.

While speaking at the service, Jonathan told the congregation: “Some people come to me and say ‘look at this person or that person, is he not your friend who benefited from you? Has this person not benefited from your government? Imagine what he is saying’? I often tell them that worse statements will come.

If you take certain decisions, you should know that those close to you will even abandon you at some point. And I tell them that more of my so-called friends will disappear. When FW De Klerk took the decision to abolish minority rule in RSA, even his wife divorced him. I hope my wife will not divorce me. But that is the only decision that has made RSA to still remain a global player by this time. If we still had that minority rule there, by this time, nobody will be talking about RSA.

“If you take certain decisions, it might be good for the generality of the people but it might affect people differently. So for ministers and aides who served with me, I sympathize with them, they will be persecuted. And they must be ready for that persecution”.

Reality

Indeed the government of Jonathan may be winding down. While the number of visitors to the president has reduced to a point of almost non-existent two weeks to the hand over, Jonathan seems to have accepted the reality of his position and the ultimate fate that awaits him as he retires to Otuoke, his village in Bayelsa State. But one aspect he is willing to use till the final hours is that of his presidential powers. It is one aspect that he is ready to exercise fully to the end of his administration. The confirmation of the appointment of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, is a demonstration of the fact that though the Jonathan presidency may be shrinking, his presidential powers remain intact and he will exercise same to the very end. But as the Jonathan shrinking presidency gives way to Buhari’s burgeoning one, the president-elect may do well to learn a lesson from the Jonathan’s presidency: Not all those who surround him and sing his praises to high heavens mean well for him. Perhaps if Jonathan had known this, the shock of the betrayal of some of his friends would have been less.

FamilyOur Son Hacked To Death For Confronting Herbalist - Bereaved Family by DONSIA(op): 2:07am On May 24, 2015
Mama Imaobong Titus refused to be consoled. She asked hysterically: Why did my son have to die?
The cause of her anguish is the hacking to death of her first son and the breadwinner of the family, Itoro, allegedly by a herbalist, Ette Okon Friday, following a misunderstanding.
Rita Emmanuel, a cousin of the deceased, a commercial motor cyclist, told the story of the murder. According to her, Itoro lived with his parents in their grass house in Ikot Abasi Effiom, in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State until he rented a room in a house nearly in order to have more space since his wife was about to give birth. “About a month ago, he decided to rent a room in the next street so that his wife who was about to deliver a baby could have more space and we all agreed that it was okay. He got a room in Ette Friday’s house and moved there”.
https://www.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Rita-Emmanuel.jpg
*Rita Emmanuel … the deceased feared he could lose second wife
Rita explained that everything was going on well until Ndarake, Itoro’s wife, gave birth and the baby died within days. After the death of the baby, the wife, according to the cousin, took ill, suffering epileptic seizures. Naturally, the husband became agitated. Consequently, Friday, described as a herbalist, was said to have claimed he could heal the woman and demanded for 5,000 naira which Itoro raised and gave to him.
Rita narrated that after Friday collected the money, he assured that the wife would soon recover and commenced treatment. Later that night, however, when the young man came back from work, he met his wife in a bad state and demanded to know from Friday, why the situation of his wife was growing worse instead of improving. This allegedly angered the herbalist who was said to have gone into his shrine and brought out a machete with which he cut Itoro’s throat.
Her words: “Last year, Itoro lost his first wife after she gave birth to their second daughter; so he was worried that his second wife taking care of the two children was going to die too. He asked the herbalist why the state of his wife was getting worse when it ought to be improving since the man had been given the money he demanded and he assured that he would treat the woman . The man did not say anything; he simply went inside his shrine and brought out a machete and cut Itoro’s throat”.
A resident, who gave his name as Monday, said when people heard Itoro’s cries that night, they rushed to the herbalist’s house and met Itoro in a pool of blood. According to him, when the herbalist saw them, he threatened them with machete. This, he said, angered the residents who overpowered him, cut his throat, dumped the body inside the shrine and set the place ablaze.
“The remains of the herbalist were eaten by dogs which he deserves because we could not understand why he should kill a young man for asking why the state of his wife whom he was treating was worsening rather than improving”.
Mr. Luis Samba, the Divisional Police Officer for Akpabuyo, said the matter had been transferred to the homicide unit of the Cross River State Police Command in Calabar. Mr Hogan Bassey, the spokesman for the Command, said the matter was being investigated.

EducationWAEC Cancels 2014 Results Of Candidates by DONSIA(op): 2:13pm On May 08, 2015

The National Examinations (NEC) Committee of WAEC on Thursday said that it had cancelled results of candidates involved in examination malpractices at the 2014 examinations.
Mr Damianus Ojijeogu of the Public Affairs Department in WAEC disclosed this in a statement in Lagos.
He said that the decision was taken at the 59th meeting of the committee.
waec cardOjijeogu said that the communiqué of the meeting was signed by an officer at the Public Affairs Department of WAEC, Mr Damianus Ojijeogu.
It said the committee reviewed a report on irregularity and special and clemency cases arising from the conduct of the May/June 2014 West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) at the meeting.
The statement said that the communiqué also said that the committee considered a report on the conduct of the November/December 2014 WASSCE, including irregularity cases arising from the conduct of the examination. It said that there were proven cases of malpractices by some candidates.
“In the course of considering the various reported cases of malpractice, the committee, after diligent deliberations, approved appropriate sanctions in all established cases of malpractice.
“This action is as prescribed by the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the council’s examinations.
“It approved that the entire results of such candidates involved in proven cases be cancelled.
“The communiqué also recommended that the subjects’ results of those involved in proven cases of malpractice be similarly cancelled.
“ In addition, some candidates will also suffer other sanctions such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examinations for a certain number of years,” it said.
The statement said that the decisions of the committee would be implemented without delay, while the affected candidates would be duly informed by the council. It, however, said that the results of candidates exonerated by the committee would be released.
According to the communiqué, the committee’s sanctions will also be imposed on all the ad-hoc examination staff that condoned the malpractice.
“The committee has directed all the ad-hoc examination functionaries, who were indicted of involvement or condoning malpractice during the conduct of the examination, be reported to appropriate state Ministries of Education.
“The ad-hoc examination functionaries, who participated during the November/December 2014 WASSCE, would also be reported to relevant bodies for disciplinary action.
“This will be in addition to the sanctions imposed on them by the council.
“The committee, as in previous meetings, strongly expressed concern at the alarming incidence of malpractice in examinations and urged stakeholders to join hands in curbing the menace,” it said.
According to the communiqué, identified weaknesses of candidates are mentioned in the reports including poor mathematical skills and Geography 3.
It also identified other weaknesses ranging from poor handwriting, omission of units in their final answers to numerical problems in Physics 2 and inability to spell technical terms correctly as observed in Biology 3 and Health, among others.
The communiqué suggested the need for students to learn the basic principles and concepts in the various subjects and apply them in solving everyday problems as some of the remedies.
It urged the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission to urgently facilitate the recognition of the newly introduced trade subjects.
According to the communiqué, these subjects should be added to the list of acceptable subjects for admission into universities.
It said that the committee had, before their deliberations, unanimously elected Mrs Fatima Abdulrahaman to act as the chairman.
Abdulrahaman is the National President, All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS).

CLOSE OBSERVATIONS ON BUHARI MILITARY REGIME AND JONATHAN CIVILIAN REGIME
Written by: Oladele Mayowa
For: Initiator Media Network
02:00pm, Sunday, 22nd February 2015.
BUHARI
Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) was in Nigerian Military service in 1961 and 1985. He retired as a Major General in Nigerian Army. Late Gen. Murtala Mohammed appointed Buhari as Governor of North-Eastern state in August 1975. Unfortunately, Gen. Murtala Mohammed was assassinated on February 13, 1976. Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd) took over and he appointed Buhari as the Federal Commissioner (now Minister) for Petroleum and Natural Resources in March 1976 and $2.8 billion allegedly went missing from accounts of NNPC.
He was accused by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) for it but Crude Oil Sales Tribunal of Inquiry, headed by Justice Ayo Irikefe which was inaugurated by Shagari in 1983 found no truth in the allegation. Buhari was also appointed as the first Chairman for Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in 1976 and 1978. He became 7th Head of State of Nigeria through December 31, 1983 Military Coup.
He embarked on economic policy which include: removing or cutting back the excesses in national expenditure, obliterating or removing completely corruption from the nation's social ethics, shifting from mainly public sector employment to self-employment. Buhari also encouraged import substitution industrialisation based to a great extent on the use of local materials and he tightened importation. He broke ties with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), when his government was asked to devalue the naira by 60%. In 20 months of presidency, about 500 politicians, officials and businessmen were jailed for corruption charges. He maintained diplomatic relations with all countries and international organisations.
He made decree number 2 which gave the state security and the chief of staff the power to detain individuals deemed to be a security risk to the state for up to three months. Strikes and popular demonstrations were banned and by October 1984, about 200,000 civil servants were retrenched and also decree number 4, which restricted Journalists from publishing anything that may ridicule government. He launched War Against Indiscipline (WAI) on March 20, 1984. His government was overthrew by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) in August 1985 coup. He served as the Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) which was created by Late Gen. Sanni Abacha.
JONATHAN
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR entered politics in 1998. He was sworn in as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa alongside the Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha on May 29, 1999 till December 2005. He became the Governor of Bayelsa on December 9, 2005 after the impeachment of Governor Deipreye Alamieyeseigha. He became the Vice-President alongside Late President Umar Yar'adua on May 29, 2007. He played a role in negotiating with major militants group to stop fighting as part of government amnesty. He became acting President on February 10, 2010 when President Yar'adua went for treatment in Saudi Arabia in November 2009.
He became the 14th Head of State of Nigeria on May 6, 2010 after the death of President Yar'adua. He contested for Presidency in 2011 under People Democratic Party (PDP) and he won. He was sworn in on May 29, 2011. He launched Roadmap for Power Sector Reform on August 2, 2010 with a goal to achieve stable electricity supply in Nigeria. President Jonathan launched the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YOUWIN) on 11th October 2011. The YOUWIN Initiative is expected to create between 40,000 to 50,000 sustainable jobs by 2014 then for ages 18 and 35. He also launched the Transformation Agenda which is based on a summary of how the Federal Government hopes to deliver projects, programmes, and key priority policies, from 2011 to 2015. He removed fuel subsidy on January 1, 2012 but he later announced pump price of petroleum to be #97 per after five days of national protests. There are subsidy scandals which involved Muhamad Tukur, Faruq Lawan, Otedola and others but they're not purnished.
There are several security challenges from Boko Haram since 2011. The group attacks include August 26, 2011 UN building was bombed at Abuja, abduction of over 200 Chibok school girls in April 2014 and other attacks. Oil pipeline was also attacked by MEND on February 4, 2012. Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three North-Eastern Nigerian states, Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa on 14 May 2013 to curtail the activities of Boko Haram.
He signed Freedom of Information (FOI) Act into law on May 28, 2011 and Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act in January 2014. MEND's (Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) former leader Henry Okah during his South African magistrate court trial on 2 May 2012, came out and insisted that President Jonathan masterminded the 1 October 2010

CelebritiesA Fan To Wizkid ” Dear Wizkid, You Can Do Better “ by DONSIA(op): 1:37pm On Jan 31, 2015

I have been monitoring Wizkid’s moves since he finally got his wish of leaving the recording company that made him, EME, and so far saying i am disappointed is an understatement.

Many of us have forgiven the 24 year old star for releasing a mediocre album, for his standard, but two things we cannot forgive him for are 1) putting in mediocre work into promoting the album and 2) for reducing the quality on his music out of nonchalance.

Wizkid almost didn’t promote the AYO album because after-all, it was his get out of jail clause from EME. But since getting out of jail, that is, leaving EME, Wizkid’s projects have resembled that of an upcoming artiste.
ALL the videos he has released under his Starboy imprint are below standard, even for a hungry artiste who wants to make it big in the game.
The video for Show You The Money was OK, but since it is about money that was a poor video. The video for In My Bed is ridiculous. Wizkid knows this, exactly why he said the video is not a video after he released it, he said it was a “party” and that “he was having fun”. Wizkid you are a top artiste… no games, no fun, just quality.
After releasing In My Bed, Wizkid abandoned AYO album for months, he kick-started Starboy Mondays. He went on to release 2 mediocre singles and 3 below par videos.
Wonderis a 4/10 song at best, while Sound It is a 3/10 song if you want to be forgiving. The videos for the two songs are not Wizkid standard. What a drop in quality.
After this he returned to AYO again, who does this? Only Wizkid. A man who is unsigned, makes all the decisions for himself – safe to say a man without a proper plan or company structure. His fans expected big things from Ojuelegba, once again Wizkid failed, maybe that was a little bit harsh. Wizkid failed to deliver. He released a 1/10 video for arguably the best song on his AYO album.
At this point it looks as if Ibrahim Balogun just wakes up from bed, shouts on the microphone and releases it.
He’s also announced an official single for next month, if i were you, i will look forward to another disappointment from the hugely talented artiste, for now.
What can Ayo Balogun do better? He needs to have a team. He needs to strategise again, more so, he needs a thinkerman. Banky W does this job for him back in the day. Wizkid, you need to control the quality of your music. You can’t continue to release mediocre songs, you can do better. Make your fans thirst for your music.
