* grabs mick from davidmascot * a big thanks to timmytimmy for bringin dis up and Debbychi 4 nominatin me, wonderful write up dat is. and thank u davidmascot for the beautiful time delay givin me enuf time to prepare, I couldn't be more grateful. This is only part of my story I was an average student in primary sch, always played wth boys, more interestd in sports dan anything, at the age of 10 I wanted to be a footballer or a runner because I was very good at it, I was kinda fast with school, that made my mom make me repeat a class coz she tot I was too small lol. at age 12, I dint even have to make a decision when the tine came, mon had me fillin up for the sciences, and with no questions I did, my secondary school life waa complicated. I did jss1 in nigeria den moved abroad den studied in the Cambridge system, here I realized I loved chemistry more than anything, I was the only one so enthusiastic about chemistry in class so it put me in d corner coz ppl tot I was weird, but I didnt care, dats wen I decided I wanted to become a scientists, o lvl exams came I made A in chemistry, me and some oda new guy were d only ones who nade A and A+, d rest subjects I made Az and Bz and one C in math, I finiished olvls at age 14. Goin baq a lil at age 12, I joined the church choir, before then I hated music with every fibre in my body, wen I joined the choir, I started improving, dey told me I was amazing, altho looking baq at those videos, I was terrible, goin off key lol. Now I wanted to become a singer, watching TV and lookn at the young actresses on disney made me wanna become an actress. then I took interest in animals, wen I started watching national geographic wild, I was amazed, I wanted now to become an animal scientist, so then I was torn. I remember tellin my dad I wanted to become a singer, then he told some1 else who said I shuld go 2 sch first, I agreed with tears. Afta making my olvls. I moved into Alevels, did part of it den came baq 2 naija. Now I had 2 write waec, b4 den I had no idea wat it was, so I went 2 ss2, had no idea wat we wer doin in class, everything was different, biology was so detailed and tins id neva done b4, I saw, I had neva done econs agric, or any oda subject apart from d sciences, math and english, so it was veeerrry tuuf, I wrote my waec in ss2, without reading, coz I tot it was just a tryout to c wat it looked like, d results came out, I made Bz and Cz, how I dunno lol, I also did a tryout 4 jamb, God knows I didnt know ONE tin in dat jamb, wen my mom askd me, I told her I knew nothing, we both laffed it off and it surprised me dat I got 209, I keep tinkn they did sth 2 my script lol, so I rote pume for uniben I failed. my course was medicine coz parents told me so. den I convinced my dad sinx id alredi passed waec I wanted to go baq 2 my alevels, he agreed, I did it, wrote d exam, and we failed deliciously, some students gettin ungraded results, I rememba giving an empty chemistry answer sheet to the man incharge whom I hated coz d only ansa I was sure off he made me erase it coz time was ova. dat yr I wrote jamb and got 179, I culdnt believe, twas painful. I started droppin ib chemistry In alvls, but den I was no average student. mom wanted me to go 4 med all thru, so it drove me to tink medicine was my passion, wen it was not. my passion did not lie in sch, so I did it just 4 my parents. sum1 told me about predegree, I was a few days fron deadline wen I registered, I was scared to write the exam coz ppl said 80000 (eighty thousand) peeps were gonna write the exam and dey would pick only about 3000, I coud only laff, mom said I wuld be among those 3k by force by fire, so I wrote the exam, I still dunno how I came out witg 63 lol, my luck, during pre, made a few mistakes but I read like crazy, decided to start anew, read from the beginning till d end, I got d sec school books, two 4 each subjects and read em all and I was pissed wen I got 248 in jamb, wen I was aiming 4 med, my abilities in chemistry kinda decreased but I loved all my subjects, so I didnt wanna go 4 pharm, which my mom had suggested,my mom decided sinx 248 was 2 low 4 med I shuld go 4 nursing, I cried b4 I changed to nursin coz I wanted medicine, not that I had passion 4 it, just coz my parents had drilled it into my head, it was hard letting go. dere was a point when I wanted to go into computer too coz I was glued to it nd good at it dat is how I ended up here.... even my dad doesnt like my course, a few weeks ago he called and said I shuld go into engineering, I was annoyed, how d hell does a bcp student go 4 a cmp course like dat wen I was failin math, math was magic to me, if I got the ansa it always waowed me like... "what just happened?"...my dad xpected to b good in every single subjects "I tot u were good in math?" becoz he himself is a mathematician, exceptionally good student durin his time I alway hear the whole school matta, im goin 2 sch 4 my parents, no oda rez, wat I want is not in school, if its one tin id love to do now, tomorrow and d next, its music. its my looooove ofcoz my parents have brainwashed moi... at least tried to. parents dont always like the idea of their kids going into music or acting, sad. I dont c myself doin nursin tho so im not gonna stop dere, I got bigga dreams and dere is my story now I nominate DrNoimatO afta understatement |

uumm: Okay, after reading through Timmy's write-up, it's only fair that I share my fair-share of me. Btw, I and Timi have quite a lot in common..... here I go.. please pardon the long essay you're about to read..
If you had asked me what I wanted to become many years back, I woulda said doctor (don't relax yet).. As a little boy, I had no actual 'dreams' for my future that I can think of.. all I had was my dad's dreams for me. I remember one time when a bus that was conveying medical students passed by, my dad said to me "one day, you're gonna be on that bus son", and I was like "umm, okay". Anyway, the point is; 8-year-old me wanted to become a doctor (because of my dad.)
Fast-forward to a few years later- when reality happened- I was chilling at the bottom of the class in the latter part of my secondary school days. I know that most people who know me from P.D might find this hard to believe, but this dude was never always 1st or 2nd or anything close in Senior Secondary School.. Maybe it was because I was too young for my class.. maybe one witch was pursuing me. Somehow, I graduated Sec. School and then I realized I actually needed a future ambition.
After failing to gain admission to study medicine that year, my life literally began. Here's a list of professions I considered : 1. Computer Scientist (I was pretty good with computers) 2.Philosopher 3.Rock-star (Timmy understands) 4. Lawyer 5. Professional dancer (I kid you not) 6. Footballer (I don't even play ball).
To put it simply, my life was in shambles. I finally settled for 'movie-addict'.I spent more time watching movies than eating, sleeping, and playing combined together. That's when it began- from regular movies, I shifted to crime movies. I was fascinated by the amazing brilliance of detectives.. then I moved to medical movies.. I just loved the doctors, and most importantly what they were doing; HELPING.. Now let it be known that prior to this point in my life, I never thought any movie could move me to tears (let's just say I didn't really have a heart). I won't say I love medicine because of movies.. but they helped me a great deal along the way. The journey to my getting admitted into OAU has not been the most rosy one considering where I left off in secondary school, but I can only say that it is by God's mercy and love that I am what I am today. I chose medicine because I think nothing beats the feeling of knowing you can help someone who is not doing too well. With medicine, I know I can put a smile on the faces of many. I dream of a future where I can look back and say "yes I gave people my best, and I played my God-led part in their lives". I don't want to be the best doctor in the world... I don't want to be the richest doctor in the world. I want to leave my mark in the life of some orphan somewhere in this world who was in need of a good doctor, and got one.. One thing I have come to realize is- everyone is special, everyone has a story, and most importantly- everyone needs help. I'll only do my part, God is the healer... Music and writing have helped me a lot along the way, but God is the reason there's me. If you ask me today about my future ambition, i'll say I want to be a doctor (Not because of my dad).. waow..... |

Timmytimmy: Hi everyone, I've been doing a little bit of thinking for the past few days and I thought about an idea.
The idea is meant to encourage us while we wait and also give this dying thread a little bit of rejuvenation. It's very simple, we would nominate people to tell why they want to study a certain course in OAU and what has been their motivation so far .
They would do their best to paint their dreams and aspirations using colouful words and expressions.I know it's not everyone here that would like to share something that private but looking on the bright side, you would encourage and influence people, you would also learn from others. I know this idea may seem rather corny or jejune, or even childish but that's the point, only children can enjoy the colour in life.
What do you guys think? Lemme know your thoughts, then we'd nominate someone. |

Career › Re: For The Nurses And Nursing Students by dora7891(op): 8:18pm On Oct 03, 2014 |
Samakinr: You can't turn it off because as far as I know, it's a very good course. though it's one that, without proper motivation, you can really be frustrated. Frustrated with many things within this age long profession. Your fears are not unfounded though. A mere 5.5% of nurses even in the states are males, where gender is not often put into option. You can expect this number to be much lower here on this shore. Hence, the stigma The statistics above underline the real problem of nursing in Nigeria is which I summarized under these terms: 1. Lack of confidence : it is an African norm for a lady to be submissive to a male counterpart. Hence while a nurse is that answerable, submissive to a male doctor. Though, what you see in nollywood and in private clinics are not a true representation of what nursing is especially in teaching hospital. I've noticed that doctors respect male nurses more than female nurses. It's a guy to guy thing or else someone is arrogant 2. Lack of ambition/ debilitating complacency : we have only one PhD student in nursing in oau. Only one professor of nursing in Nigeria.. you can deduce from that 3. Dichotomy in nursing education. : nursing school must be scrapped if the profession wants any nadir of dignity. A diploma of three years?.. . It's really a shame... Even medical laboratory technology has since moved on. It is said that nursing school is not different from a glorified secondary school I will expantiate on the above three points in further posts (or on request). But on the positive side, nursing is a calling. It's a job where, though you may not be overly appreciated, you can be self fulfilled in helping out in the cause of humanity. It is a caring job. Job prospects is good, and outside this shore, it's VERY good. There's a good Avenue for career progression especially in academics and public health. A federal government employee can earn, as a starting salary, up to 110k. It's of course much higher in other climes where civil servants are much more appreciated. And the job is flexible enough to run a business along. However, It will interest you to know that there's only one professor of nursing in Nigeria at the moment. This is in Alliance with the effect of the preponderance of females in nursing- a typical female nurse will, after school, marry a doctor and become a housewife without much ado in pursuing further education. (out of all the directors of the various professional medical councils in Nigeria, nursing is the only one represented with just a MSc holder!. However, like I'd said earlier, build your confidence, be ambitious that u wanna be great therein, think beyond the box, and you'll be in for a great career. Never study nursing and start comparing yourself with medical students.. You will be frustrated, especially in oau where u are neigbours... Your discipline as a nursing student can embarrass you at some points in your life... Even education students will/may ridicule you when they see you, a male in a white uniform working down the length of the campus, but really.. . The end justifies the means. Which includes a guarantee that you will have a good job after school... Compare to them thnk u 4 dat ...phew |
