Guy abeg remove the English from pidgin. It stopped being English a long time ago. No Nigerian academic even wants to do research on it.

Same I thought until I became more active on Nairaland. Truth is: We don't write and speak proper English. I read a thread sometime ago where the Chinese were looking for English teachers in Africa and listed Ghana, Kenya and either Zimbabwe or South Africa as the countries where prospective teachers should be chosen from.

That said, this GRE, is it only for entry into schools in the US? Can someone use it (GRE) for non-US schools (say Singapore, Japan or South Korea)?

By proper English you mean being as close to the colonial master as possible? There has been serious corrosion of culture in all those countries you mentioned. Nigeria still remains the Beacon for black culture the world over. It's not going to change soon. Anyway I wish we would throw away our inferiority complex and adopt Nigerian pidgin full time. Use it to code and teach, etc.

As for the GRE part, I think checking out the admissions requirements for the institutions you want to apply to is usually the best idea. Maybe contact them if their contact information is available.

Sure. But I don't think that these English language proficiency testing companies will ever agree to let Nigeria off. The number of Nigerian students abroad is frightening. It's very big business for these guys.

Maybe our accents are unique. But that's what you get from so called non native speakers. Seriously though Nigerians string better looking sentences than the average native speaker.

I honestly don't know how Jamaica happens to be classified as a native speaking country while Nigeria isn't

For US schools that require you to take an English test, a Master's degree in the UK would not qualify you for an exemption.

Georgia Tech and UM College Park do not require an English test. You may search for similar schools, if desired.

Hi guys. I have a really stupid question to ask.

I want to study in the uk for my master's degree, after which I will proceed for a PhD in the USA. Do I need to write any English tests assuming my plan works out?

Because I saw on some University Web pages that some teaching assistanships would still require English proficiency test scores from international students regardless of where they study.

Help me out guys.

By the way I've been a silent follower of this thread since God knows when. My original plan was to apply to several us schools. The University of Georgia was top of my list. But I changed my mind and am applying for the Chevening and Commonwealth Shared Scholarships. Amurika coming up soon.

Yh. Most of their partner schools are in North America. But University of Edinburgh just partnered with them in 2016. That's why I'm disturbing myself. Mastercard gives you money for English language tests sef.

Yes they do, but that time when I was applying for Chevening my head no correct. I was solely looking at University of Edinburgh.... till they bounced me. lol

I weak for this your post ooo... got my admission for Aberdeen in about 3weeks... Dint even send them references.

Heriot-Watt on the other hand took about 2months coz I applied early for 2017/18 while they were still working on 2016/17. They even sent me mails to apologize for the delay. They later gave me an offer with reference conditions doe.

University of manchester was the slowest or rather I wasn't serious with them. Dint tidy up applications quickly plus dint send them reference and proof of english proficiency for about 3months (Sept. - Nov.). They kept mailing me to know if I was still interested. Sent it in the long run and got an unconditional offer within 48hrs.

My guy I've learnt my lesson.

If you need to apply to any UK school kindly do so through a representative. Saves you the stress.

Anyway I applied through UKEAS, and will be writing the PTE Academic test if I am nominated for any of the Scholarships I applied for. The University of Aberdeen will normally require two academic references on letterheaded paper. If it's not on letterhead then it should be signed.

Again please apply through a recognized educational consultant. They reply them faster.

Let's just hope and pray that our best is good enough and by February we all would be called for interview.

I know it's not necessary but I just got this gut feeling that it wouldn't hurt to have your IELTS or TOEFL or PTE ready as well as your admissions ready and uploaded to your application. I know it's not necessary for now as stated on chevening's platform but personally I feel it reflects seriousness/readiness to study.

LOL. I have six admission letters. None for Chevening. My first choice uni bounce me. Maybe because I didn't apply through a consultant... Whatever. Uni of Liverpool since November last year still waiting for decision. Meanwhile I have gotten from Aberdeen, Reading, Sheffield-Hallam, London School of Economics, Durham, Bristol and Aberystwyth University. None of them na Chevening. Anyway I am also applying for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme. So any one wey fall in I'm game.

So far so good chevening has kept their end of the bargain.. sending timely updates to all applicants.
So if they want, the could go ahead with joining things here and there... it still won't mean that you'd get an info which chevening wouldn't send to your mail.

Well I believe this place is still over sufficient... and I believe if a whatsapp group is set up..this place will most likely wither away... But the who am I to make deductions.

Thank you all for your contributions, i understand all your point of views but this is a platform, whatsapp is a platform. if we are on whatsapp it still doesn't stop us from being here. Most of us here are on the facebook group, or following on twitter but we still visit here. I'm just talking of a platform that will give us information as soon as possible with notifications. Platform where we can ask and be rest assure of getting a response in couple of minutes or even seconds and not a day. Moreover, if we should say after interview then whats the use? We only need to wait for response after interview thats all. It now that information is really needed. And even all the people that did in the past and successful, where are they now? are they here to give us tips, no! because we have no access to them again after the shortlist is out but they will always be on whatsapp even if their numbers change, you can chat them all anytime and get information in the future. Well, couple of people accepted my view and have chatted me up. I will add them to the group if you think its cool, please by choice chat me up. ITS PURELY BY CHOICE. Thanks guys
