The Borno State Government has said about 1,400 repentant Boko Haram suspects have been released by the military and rehabilitated into society. The Borno State Commissioner for Information, Babakura Jato, told The PUNCH during an interview on Monday that 1, 400 had been released in three tranches since the ‘Operation Safe Corridor’ programme began. The PUNCH reports that although the programme began in 2016, it wasn’t until 2018 that the release of the suspects began. Jato said most of the persons released were not actually Boko Haram members but were relatives of terrorists or persons found in the wrong place at the wrong time. The commissioner said, “There have been a series of releases. They were released in three tranches. The first set was released during Governor Shettima’s time while two sets have been released under Prof. Zulum. “The total number of persons released is 1,400. Out of the 1,400, the majority of them are cleared suspects. These were people who were suspected of being members of Boko Haram and it was discovered that they were not. “The rest are children of Boko Haram or actual Boko Haram members. I cannot give you a breakdown of the figure now for security reasons.” The government’s spokesman said he was aware of allegations that some of those released had gone back to terrorism but argued that most of these allegations were mere speculations. Jato said after the training, they were handed over to the Borno State Government for proper integration into their communities. He stated that if any person was rejected by his community for being a former Boko Haram member, the government would resettle that person. When asked if there were recorded cases of someone going back to join Boko Haram, he said, “I have not heard of that but we have had cases whereby people in the community rejected them. So, they return to the rehab centres and we change their location.” Meanwhile, the President, Military Widows Association, Mrs Vera Aloko, has expressed satisfaction with the Operation Safe Corridor programme. Aloko said military widows would support anything that would restore peace. She said, “It is true that our Vice-President, Mrs Idith Opesanmi, faulted the Federal Government’s decision to release more repentant Boko Haram members. However, she spoke in her personal capacity and not for all military widows. We support the government and any policy that can restore peace.” |

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has told the minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to perish the thoughts of further mortgaging the future of the country by securing $500 million dollars (N182 billion) loan, purportedly for upgrading the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). The party also urged the National Assembly to save the nation by rejecting the request by President Muhammadu Buhari to plunge the nation into more debt through his request for additional $29.9 billion dollars loan, in which the said $500 million and other unexplained subheads are embedded. The PDP, in a statement signed by its national spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, implored the National Assembly to reject the clear attempt by the cabal in the Buhari’s Presidency to worsen the economic situation in the country via the use of phony projects as guise to draw foreign funds to service their selfish economic and political interests. The party noted that under the Buhari Presidency, that foreign debt accumulated to $83 billion with nothing to show other than excruciating unemployment rate, decayed infrastructure, worsening governance system, escalated insecurity and unprecedented poverty. The PDP alerted that the request for the approval of $500 million is aimed at setting the stage for further fleecing of our nation’s economy as the federal government under the Buhari administration has shown no commitment towards nation building, transparency and accountability in governance. “Moreover, the federal government has failed to present details of the requested $29.9 billion loan in which the $500 million being requested by the minister of Information and Culture is embedded; a development that points to nothing but the corruption in Buhari’s administration”. “While counselling the minister to perish the thoughts of $500 million, the PDP charged him to use his appearance at the National Assembly to give account of the funds so far released to the ministry of Information and Culture which has been plagued by cases and allegations of corruption under his watch,” the party said. PDP also charged Lai Mohammed to immediately provide answers to circumstances surrounding the reported National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) N2.5 billion fraud. The PDP urged the National Assembly to shelve all requests for foreign loans until the Buhari’s Presidency heed to the demand by Nigerians to open its books and publish details of all financial transactions on foreign loans as well as spending from the federation account so as to secure our economy from the bazaar of the corrupt cabal in the Buhari’s Presidency.” |
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has commiserated with the family of victims of attacks at Auno village, along Damaturu–Maiduguri Road, assuring them that his regime will continually frustrate the devilish operations of Boko Haram, and bring it to an end. In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Monday, Buhari condemned the “murderous and cowardly” attack on innocent passengers by the Boko Haram terrorists near Maiduguri. During that attack, about 30 people were killed, while many women and children were abducted. According to the retired general, his regime is determined to frustrate their goal to hold Nigeria to ransom. He said, “The commitment of this administration to protect the lives of Nigerians will not be derailed by the cowardly and indiscriminate violence against innocent people by Boko Haram terrorists.” The president, who also condoled with Borno State Government over the attacks, warned that ”terrorists are clearly on a back foot and their days are numbered”. He added, “As our armed forces continue to receive more hardware and intelligence to counter our current security challenges, the remnants of Boko Haram will ultimately be crushed. ”The peculiar challenges of asymmetric warfare notwithstanding, our Armed Forces are ever determined to defeat these enemies of humanity.” News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Auno attacks, which took place at about 9.45 pm on Sunday, claimed the lives of innocent travellers, whose vehicles on the convoy were attacked and burnt by the Boko Haram insurgents. NAN reports that the video clips on the attacks showing burnt human bodies and vehicles went viral on social media on Monday. |
The Federal Government has advised unemployed graduates who are seeking government jobs to look elsewhere, saying there are more sustainable lucrative ventures outside their focus. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, said this during a Townhall Meeting on Popularisation of blue/green collar jobs among graduates of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, which was held in Benin, Edo State. A statement signed by the Deputy Director/Head of Press at the ministry, Charles Akpan, said the minister, who was represented at the event by the Director, Special Duties and Projects Department in the ministry, Martina Nwordu, reminded the youths that the wealthiest youths in the world at present were not government employees. The statement said, “The minister also urged Nigerian youths to invest their talent in other job sectors, as the richest youth of the world, aged between 21 and 31 years, are not employees of government but smart entrepreneurs who distinguished themselves in creative skills in various areas. “The minister disclosed that the purpose of the meeting, which held concurrently in four other geo-political zones of the federation, was to sensitise representatives of key stakeholders in graduate employment on the benefits of blue/green-collar jobs as an alternative response to the challenges of graduate unemployment.” The statement added that the minister said the meeting was part of the activities in the Graduate Employability Enhancement Scheme, which was an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on how to break the resilience of high unemployment rate in the country. While urging the unemployed graduates, parents, career counsellors, students of tertiary institutions to embrace the profitable opportunities offered by jobs outside government offices, Ngige said such opportunities had the capacity to give high income, self-dignity and esteemed self-worth. |
Boko Haram terrorists killed at least 30 people and abducted many women and children in a raid in Borno State, a regional government spokesman said on Monday. The attack Sunday evening targeted the village of Auno on a key highway linking to regional capital Maiduguri. The jihadists stormed in on trucks mounted with heavy weapons, killing, burning and looting before kidnapping women and children, state government spokesman Ahmad Abdurrahman Bundi said. They aimed at travellers who had stopped for the night and torched vehicles. The attackers “killed not less than 30 people who are mostly motorists and destroyed 18 vehicles,” Bundi said in a statement after visiting the scene. The attack, some 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Maiduguri, occurred in an area where fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province have been active, mounting roadblocks to target security forces and civilians. Witnesses said jihadists set alight 30 vehicles in the raid, including trucks that had stopped overnight on their way to Maiduguri. “Many of the drivers and their assistants who were sleeping the vehicles were burnt alive,” civilian militia fighter, Babakura Kolo told AFP. The jihadists combed through the village, looting and burning shops and property before withdrawing, he said. Auno lies on the 120-kilometre highway linking Maiduguri to Damaturu, a major regional city in neighbouring Yobe state. The highway has been increasingly targeted by ISWAP militants in recent months. The surge has followed the creation of so-called “super camps” by the Nigerian military in the northeast – a strategy under which small army camps have withdrawn from several areas and combined into fewer, larger bases. Last month four Nigerian soldiers were killed and seven injured when the jihadists attacked troops positioned in Auno. The decade-long Islamist insurgency has killed 36,000 people and displaced around two million from their homes in northeast Nigeria. The violence has spread to neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a regional military coalition to fight the insurgents. https://punchng.com/boko-haram-kills-30-abducts-dozens-in-maiduguri/amp/

A former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), on Monday, expressed his preference to be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. His lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), spoke on his behalf shortly after he was arraigned on fresh money laundering charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday. Adoke was arraigned alongside Aliyu Abubakar, who was accused of paying dollar equivalent of N300m in Adoke’s account in September 2013 in violation of the Money Laundering Act. Ozekhome was arguing his client’s bail application when he noted that his client was produced in court by the EFCC from the Federal Medical Centre near Jabi, Abuja, where he had been admitted for treatment. After the defendants took their pleas, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Bala Sanga, had urged the court to remand them in the custody of the EFCC pending when their bail applications would be heard and determined. The defence lawyers immediately noted that they already filed their bail applications and had been responded to by the prosecution. While arguing his bail application, Ozekhome who urged the court to grant bail to the former AGF in liberal and affordable terms and conditions said his client would prefer to be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre, instead of the custody of the EFCC. He said, “The first defendant voluntarily returned to the country. There is his statement attached to show that he returned to the country voluntarily. “He did not run away. We have attached an exhibit to show that he went for his Masters’ study abroad. “We have deposed to the affidavit about his health conditions. The prosecution themselves brought him to court from the Federal Medical Centre near Jabib in Abuja, this morning. “We also plead that he be taken to the Kuje Correction Centre, a euphemism for Kuje prison pending when he meets his bail conditions to avoid the mental psychological strictures he goes through in the custody of the EFCC. [img][/img][img][/img]“My lord we pray that he be granted bail in liberal and affordable terms and conditions so that he can take care of himself. “The law says, ‘come and stand trial’, it did not say ‘come and sit trial or come and prostate trial’. “My lord as you can see, the first defendant who is less than 60 is already bent with age.” |

"""Husband scarcity'''''has become one of the challenges faced by many women today,if you go to prayer houses, majority of the intentions are prayer for life partner. And this calls for concern. Casting our minds back to the time of our mothers and grandmothers, was there really much of a "husband scarcity'' problem?,or maybe there were more men than women then,or there was an adequate corresponding numbers of both genders.I don't think so.maybe then, the women had values&were prepared to build a home¬ pack into already built home. Then once a young man comes of age&can at least feed himself & his wife,he goes out in search of a wife&the woman really appreciate him and helps him to build a future. What am i really trying to insinuate? we created what we now see as "husband scarcity''for ourselves. Today, the reverse is the case.Ask an average girl to define her dream husband;you get things like"he has to be tall handsome, dark & rich, own a house at least & be presentable''and then she adds "God fearing''in order not to sound so worldly. What a wonderful dream!.Then check the number of women around you & the number of men That can meet standard, & you will see the problem. You would b hearing ladies say"I cannot suffer in my father's house & then go and start another round of suffering with a man''.What if from the beginning, you have everything you want & there is no suffering & later in the marriage the table turns around, then comes suffering? will you run away?Nobody prays for suffering, but it is good to start small & end big, than to start big and end small. The problem is that the description majority of ladies give of their ideal man is virtually thesame.when 50 ladies want thesame kind of man & the man that fits what they want is just 1 man& the decided to pick one, then what becomes of 49 others?they start lamenting of "husband scarcity''. Another irony of our time is that is that,it is hard, due to the face of our economy to find a man who is of marriage age who possesses all this things these ladies want, legally(except those involved in illicit way of getting money)& even the numbers of of these men involved in this illegal act is not enough to match all those searching for already made husband & besides most of them are not husband materials. If you look around, majority of the ladies of substance, of good value & virtue, who are ready to build a home with a man who has prospects, are married & not complaining of "husband scarcity''. Now,what is the solution to "husband scarcity''?; The easiest way to find a husband now,is to change your view of who a husband is. A husband is that man God created then saw that it may be hard for him to really actualize his purpose for creating him, without a help mate & then made the woman & gave to him & he felt complete & fulfilled. MARRIAGE IS NOT A POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAM. It is a mission of building the family that will serve God here on earth & be a benefit to man kind.for those who see marriage as a way out of poverty, it is a way into bondage.women are HOME BUILDERS,not HOME WARMERS,DON'T CONFUSE A MAN'S PATH WITH HIS DESTINY.Where he is today may only be a route to where God has destined him to b tomorrow. Another truth is that;YOU(woman)MAY BE THE ONLY FAST MEANS TO THAT HIS(man)DESTINATION. Join in alleviating "Husband scarcity'' PICK UP THE RIGHT VALUES.I am not saying that you should pick anyone that comes your way & start talking about marriage. REMEMBER;NOT ALL MEN ARE HUSBAND MATERIALS. What am insinuating is that you should stop setting your standard on material acquisitions of physical appearances.look beyond the physical. WHAT MAKES A MAN WHO HE IS,IS NOT WHAT HE OWNS OR HOW HE LOOKS.IT IS WHAT HE IS MADE UP OF.And that which he is made up of is most times not seen with the physical ey,only it effects can be seen.Marriage is a permanent thing, what is seen is temporal & that which is not seen is permanent. Relax and go to God in prayer,God did not just created EVE for creating sake;he created her for ADAM'S need to be met.Likewise you (all ladies)you were not created for creating sake(unless God has a special calling on you)you were all created to meet a particular man's need. And THAT MAN MAY BE THAT ONE THAT DOESN'T FIT INTO YOUR "EXORBITANT STANDARD''do not despise or look down on any man, because it doesn't take God a second to turn around someone destiny,a man not so rich or an average man in DECEMBER,God can bless him to be very rich by JANUARY.............HMMMMMMM. |
