FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo ’s faction may have carried the day in the battle for Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) tickets. The party handed Gen. Tunji Olurin, who has Obasanjo ’s backing, its flag yesterday at a rally to kick-start President Goodluck Jonathan ’s campaign in the Southwest. Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, who co-ordinated President Jonathan ’s campaign before the presidential primary, shunned the Ibadan rally. Also absent were Senate Leader Teslim Folarin and members of the anti-Alao- Akala faction of the PDP in Oyo State, led by Senator Balogun. They are: Former Deputy Governor Hazeem Gbolarumi, former PDP Deputy National Chairman (South) Yekeen Adeojo and one-time Minister for Power Wole Oyelese, among others. They were absent as a result of the controversy in the PDP over tickets for the general elections in April. Olurin, who is now the governorship candidate of the party in Ogun State, got the flag from the PDP Acting National Chairman Haliru Bello Mohammed. Oyo State Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala and the party ’s governorship candidate in Lagos, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, also got flags. But, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) later yesterday withdrew Alao-Akala ’s and Enugu Governor Sullivan Chime’s tickets. They were issued in error, it said. Many were stunned when House of Representatives Speaker Dimeji Bankole, who has not been cleared to contest, took the flag on behalf of the House of Representatives candidates from the zone and waved it at the crowd at the expansive Mapo Hall venue of the event. Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Obasanjo, was with her father on the high table. She also danced all around while the programme lasted. Obasanjo told the PDP leadership to look into the problems caused by the primaries with a view to reconciling all the aggrieved members. “After the primaries, it is normal that some will be pleased, while some will be aggrieved. I am appealing to the National Working Committee of our party to set up a body that will reconcile all the aggrieved. After all, democracy is a game of number. We need everybody no matter what happened – whether they are good or bad.” Obasanjo said the Southwest must remain in the political mainstream. He said in Yoruba, “O si n be, bawo ni o se fe mo bi won se pin (You were not there, how do you expect to know how they shared the largesse). ” Obasanjo went on: “With the political history of our country, the unity will be strengthened, if a person from the minority group from Southsouth wins the election. “Nothing should be taken for granted. We do know that there are areas crying for attention – security, unemployment of youths, corruption and infrastructure. These can ’t be neglected. As for me, I take solace in the fact that President Goodluck Jonathan, who has gone through the period of tutelage, would work. ” Jonathan, who was in Ibadan with Vice President Nnamadi Sambo, said the Southwest is too strategic to the politics and economy of Nigeria to be left in the hands of “rascals”. He did not elaborate. According to him, Lagos State is a mini- Nigeria, considering the population make-up which consists of about 50 per cent non-Yoruba, Ogun, with 30 per cent non-Yoruba, among other states in the region. The President described Lagos as important for the PDP because of its economic, industrial and political importance. He said Lagos must not continue to be in the hands of the opposition party. He also hinted that all internal crises rocking the PDP in the region would be resolved amicably. His words: “The zone is a mini-Nigeria. Lagos houses the industries and it bubbles with economic activities. Therefore, the zone must be taken seriously. The zone has dynamic people, great scholars and committed citizens. “All PDP crises in the Southwest will be resolved amicably. We must work hard to take over Lagos, which is a very important state in Nigeria. We are also working towards taking Ekiti and Osun. With your support, the whole of Southwest must be in the PDP. The zone is too important to be in the hands of rascals. PDP must take over the Southwest. ” Jonathan promised a five-year development plan that would be pursued to the end, adding that such a plan would not give room for abandoned projects. He added that his administration would stand by the rule of law, stressing that the era of impunity is over. The President said his administration would focus on security and the economy to put the country on a sound footing for prosperity of citizens. Former All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) presidential aspirant Chief Harry Akande was accepted into the PDP. He said: “After 12 years of walking in the wilderness of ANPP, I am now back in the PDP. ” He described President Jonathan as an epitome of peace, patience and honesty. Also at the rally were Defence Minister Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN); former Ekiti and Ondo State governors - Mr Segun Oni and Dr Olusegun Agagu - and their Osun State counterpart, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Silva was also there. |

The controversy surrounding the primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State is unending as the two factions of the party, which held separate congresses, claimed to have picked the nomination forms of the Independent National Electoral Commission for those they elected. In effect, the PDP headquarters may face a Herculean task in determining the authentic governorship, as well as other candidates of the party in the state in the April elections. Reports had indicated that the candidates elected at the congress of a faction of the party loyal to Governor Gbenga Daniel were contacted to pick the INEC nomination forms on Thursday, with Alhaji Gboyega Isiaka picking the form as the Ogun PDP governorship candidate. But the governorship candidate elected at the congress loyal to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Maj.-Gen. Adetunji Olurin (retd.), also claimed on Friday that he had picked and filled the INEC nomination form at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja. The protracted crisis in the state PDP had compelled the feuding parties to elect different candidates from parallel congresses for the state and national elections. They also filed the names of their representatives to the national office of the PDP. While the faction loyal to Daniel is led by Chief Joju Fadairo, the parallel exco is led by Chief Dayo Soremi, with the active support of Obasanjo and the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Senator Jubril Martins-Kuye. While the faction loyal to Obasanjo conducted its primaries at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the Daniel faction conducted its own at the MKO Abiola Stadium, both in Abeokuta. Soremi is regarded as the chairman of the ‘Harmonised state executive,’ with none of the members representing the Fadairo executive, after the latter was reportedly dissolved by the National Working Committee of the PDP under the sacked chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo. In an interview with SATURDAY PUNCH on the telephone on Friday, Olurin said he was the first to pick the form, saying his “opponent rushed down” to Abuja when he learnt that he (Olurin) had collected the INEC form. The former military governor of Oyo State said that Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello and others, who emerged victorious at the Soremi-led primaries, had also picked their INEC forms. Olurin, who sounded confident about his chances in the emerging power play in the state, said the headquarters of the party would decide on the “authentic candidate” of the party on Monday when it is expected to forward the name of its candidate to INEC. He said, “I’ve picked my form. There is no big deal about that. In fact, I’ve filled it and it is on its way to Abuja today (Friday). Yes, I didn ’t come physically to pick it, but it was picked by the leader of my group for all of us that emerged winners at the primaries. By the grace of God, the form will get to the party headquarters either today or by Saturday.” Fadairo, however, declared on Friday that the candidates elected during the primaries conducted under his watch were the only candidates issued with the INEC nomination forms. He said, “To the best of my knowledge, only (Gboyega) Isiaka and (Lola) Abiola-Edewor (Ogun Central Senatorial candidate) collected the INEC nomination forms for the respective posts from the national headquarters in Abuja yesterday. “The national party called me that the forms were ready. I informed the respective candidates, including the other senatorial candidates, the nine House of Reps candidates and the state House of Assembly candidates, and they went to Abuja to collect the INEC forms. There is no confusion there. It is very clear. ” Soremi described the reported issuance of the INEC nomination forms to the candidates elected at the congress organised by the Fadairo- led executive as “untrue.” In a statement on Friday, he contended that an injunction obtained by the parallel body from a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday had made the congress under the “dissolved Fadairo-led executive a nullity.” He said, “We affirm that this can’t be true as our great party respects the rule of law and won ’t be part of a sinister plot to enthrone impunity as a way of life in conducting the affairs of the PDP. “To be sure, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has already stopped whatever charade the Joju Fadairo- led dissolved executive committee did in terms of congresses/primaries. Both the PDP National Secretariat and INEC were restrained from relating with the illegal Fadairo group. “The order of the Federal High Court has been served on both INEC and the PDP National Secretariat. ” Justice Abdul Kafarati of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had, on Wednesday, restrained INEC and the PDP from validating the results of the governorship primaries conducted by the Daniel camp. Kafarati gave the order following an ex-parte application by Olurin, Chief Babatunde Fadun, Mr. Dave Salako, Mr. Tunde Oladunjoye, Mr. Wale Solaja and Seun Adesanya. He further restrained INEC and the PDP from making any pronouncement validating the results of the primaries conducted by the Fadairo-led executive, pending the determination of the originating summons. The judge directed the electoral commission and the party to accept the results of the governorship primaries by the plaintiffs, according to their prayers. Olurin believed that since the headquarters of the party was in court when the order was given, it would have no excuse not to obey it. He said, “The Daniel group just wants to create confusion because the people there (PDP national headquarters) are aware of the court order, which forbids them from presenting any candidate for the elections. “The leadership of the party is aware of the court order, so it either vacates the order or follows the rule of law by having nothing to do with the other group as ordered by the court. I know that we have a responsible party leadership who obeys the rule of law. I won the party governorship primaries and that is why I am also confident. ” Olurin, the former Sole Administrator of Ekiti State during the state of emergency in the Obasanjo Administration, added that (Senator Iyabo) Obasanjo-Bello and other candidates in the Fadairo faction had picked their INEC nomination forms. “All of them, including Iyabo, have collected their forms and I can assure you that we ’re confident that we would make it,” he added. He said since the party was yet to come out openly that it had picked any candidate, it was wrong to assume that the candidates in his group had been dumped. Soremi reasoned that the PDP had demonstrated its respect for the rule of law as the pronouncement of a State High Court was enough to sack the immediate past chairman of the party, Nwodo, which was obeyed. “This, we believe, is what enabled the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State, Chief Adetunji Olurin, to collect and fill the required INEC forms along with others who won in the party ’s primaries,” he said. |
IN a dramatic turn of events, Senate Leader, Teslim Kolawole Folarin yesterday emerged winner in a re-run primary election conducted in Oyo Central Senatorial District of Oyo State. Reports from the primary has it that Folarin defeated daughter of the second Republic Attorney-General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Chief Richard Akinjide, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide and three others. Folarin polled 1,327 to defeat his closest rival and winners of the first election held by a faction of the party two weeks ago, Jumoke Akinjide, to clinch the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial Ticket of Oyo central District. While Akinjide polled 556 votes, other contestant like Gbenga Olaofe had 14 votes. 19 votes of the 1,916 accredited delegates in the election were voided. Former Military administrator of Lagos state, General Raji Rasaki was said to have boycotted the primaries which reportedly held at Ladigbolu Grammar school, Oyo. However, results from the parallel primary by another faction of the party held at Durbar stadium, Oyo town favoured Akinjide as she was said to be leading by a wide margin as at the time of filing this report. INEC members from Abuja who observed the primaries which produced Folarin as the flagbearer were led by Prince Ibrahim Yakubu (Chairman), Mr Olobo Onesmus Idu (Secretary), Mr Nwachukwu E. Robert, Dr kayode Ogunsalu and Joseph Duke were part of the team. Reacting to his victory, Senator Folarin who described the primaries as peaceful added that his victory at the primaries was a pointer to his acceptability by his people. While promising better qualitative representation, Folarin urged his co- contestants to join hands with him in ensuring total victory for the Peoples Democratic party at the polls. |

Six people, including the anointed gubernatorial candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Borno State, Alhaji Modu Fannami Gubio and a younger brother of Governor Sheriff, were shot dead today in Maiduguri. Alhaji Gubio was the cousin of current governor, Ali Modu Sheriff. He was also the Commissioner for Finance in the state. It is unclear if Alhaji Gubio, who was shot in front of his house, was assassinated by the Boko Haram militants in the state who have vowed to kill the governor. The younger brother of the governor was Goni Sherrif. Sources told SaharaReporters that after the Friday Jumat service, the victims had gone to say hello to Gubio ’s father when they were attacked in front of Alhaji Gubio’s house and killed. |

Greenbelt, Maryland – Emenike Charles Nwankwoala, age 49, of Laurel, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to exporting arms without a license, exporting controlled goods without a license and willful delivery of a firearm to a common carrier without written notice, in connection with a scheme to export firearms and ammunition to Nigeria. The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge William Winter of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Special Agent in Charge Theresa R. Stoop of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Baltimore Field Division; Commissioner Alan Bersin of U.S. Customs and Border Protection; and Special Agent in Charge Rick Shimon of the U.S. Department of Commerce ’s Washington Office of Export Enforcement. “Emenike Charles Nwankwoala illegally shipped guns and ammunition to Nigeria for a decade, concealing the weapons in shipping containers and lying about the contents and destination, ” said U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein. “By stopping the illegal export of weapons from the United States, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ’s (ICE) is keeping weapons from falling into the hands of criminals, ” said William Winter, Special Agent in Charge for ICE in Baltimore. “ICE is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to identify, investigate, and prosecute individuals or companies who engage in illegal export schemes.” “We are pleased to have worked with our law enforcement partners to stem the illegal flow of firearms, ” says ATF Special Agent in Charge Theresa R. Stoop. “ Firearms trafficking remains a serious crime, whether guns are moved from state to state, or across international lines. This investigation is proof that combined efforts impact firearms- related crime, no matter how far- reaching the crimes go.” “This case highlights the tenacious, coordinated effort of federal law enforcement to intercept this cache of weapons and ultimately gain a conviction in this case, ” said Rick Shimon, Special Agent in Charge of U.S. Department of Commerce ’s Washington Office of Export Enforcement. This is an especially egregious crime given that a criminal justice official entrusted with upholding the law smuggled weapons out of the country. ” According to Nwankwoala’s plea agreement, he was employed by the State of Maryland as a Probation Officer. Investigation showed that during a six-month period beginning in December 2008, Nwankwoala purchased at least 37 Maverick Model 88 shotguns from a Federal Firearms Licensee located in Kensington, Maryland. On April 21, 2009, Nwankwoala ordered an additional 25 shotguns over the internet from Impact Guns in Ogden, Utah, a Federal Firearms Licensee. Nwankwoala stated that he was purchasing these shotguns for hunting in Nigeria. The licensee asked Nwankwoala if he had an export license, and Nwankwoala falsely indicated that he did. Nwankwoala never obtained guns through this gun store. On May 13, 2009, Nwankwoala told an undercover agent from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) that for approximately ten years he has purchased shotguns and shipped them to Nigeria in shipping containers with vehicles and hospital beds. Nwankwoala further stated that he made a large profit from these arms shipments and that he knew that he needed a license to engage in this activity but had not obtained one because he could not identify the end user as required by the United States Department of Commerce. In July or August 2009, Nwankwoala prepared a shipping container with 22 Maverick 88 shotguns, two Mossberg 500A shotguns, two Smith & Wesson M&P .45 caliber pistols, two Bersa Thunder .40 caliber pistols, one Bersa Thunder 9 mm pistol, one Ruger SR 9 mm pistol, 850 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 150 rounds of 40mm ammunition, 180 rounds of 45mm ammunition, and 310 12 gauge shotgun rounds, secreted in suitcases, as well as a 2008 Toyota Camry, registered to Nwankwoala. Nwankwoala completed the Shipper ’s Export Declaration (“SED”) for this container which listed the address of the exporter ’s principal party in interest as Nwankwoala’s home address; but listed as the principal party an individual other than himself; and indicated that the container ’s contents were “used household goods and personal effects ” and “used auto.” The SED did not state that firearms or ammunition were or would be in the container. Nwankwoala, using a freight forwarding agent located in Baltimore, Maryland, had the container delivered to a ship in Port Elizabeth, in Newark, New Jersey, for shipment to Nigeria. The package was to be shipped to a person who was not licensed as a firearms dealer, manufacturer, or importer. On August 21, 2009, the ship left from Port Elizabeth carrying the container prepared by Nwankwoala. The container arrived in Nigeria on September 15, 2009, but was not unloaded based upon a request from law enforcement to have the container returned for inspection. On October 6, 2009, the container was inspected in Algeciras, Spain by agents from Spanish Customs, United States Customs and Border Protection, and ICE and the firearms, ammunition and automobile were recovered. A review of the serial numbers of the weapons seized revealed that five of the pistols and twelve of the Maverick 88 shotguns were purchased by Nwankwoala. Eight other shipments have been made to Nigeria based upon SEDs listing Nwankwoala ’s home address, from August 2006 through August 2009. The shipments are described as containing used vehicles and personal household goods. The two Smith & Wesson M&P .45 caliber pistols, two Bersa Thunder .40 caliber pistols, one Bersa Thunder 9 mm pistol, and one Ruger SR 9 mm pistol, as well as all the ammunition found on the container are controlled under the United States Munitions List and require a license for export. The Maverick 88 and Mossberg 500A shotguns are controlled under the Commerce Control List for export to Nigeria and also require a license for export. In February 2008, Nwankwoala applied for and was granted a license from the Department of Commerce to export one Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun to Nigeria for personal use. In February 2009, Nwankwoala applied for an export license from the Department of Commerce to export to Nigeria 45 Mossberg 500 and Maverick 88 shotguns. On this application, Nwankwoala stated that these weapons were to be used in the operation of a newly-opened range in Nigeria. When Nwankwoala was unable to provide further documentation or evidence of this newly-opened range, the Department of Commerce denied the license. Nwankwoala did not possess the necessary licenses or authorizations from the United States Department of State or the Department of Commerce to export the above-listed firearms and ammunition to Nigeria, nor does he possess a Federal Firearms License to engage in the business of dealing in firearms. Nwankwoala faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for exporting arms without a license; 20 years in prison for exporting controlled goods without a license; and five years in prison for willful delivery of a firearm to a common carrier without written notice. U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte has scheduled sentencing for July 21, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended Assistant United States Attorneys Christen A. Sproule and Barbara Skalla, who is prosecuting the case. |

Saharareporters has learned from highly reliable sources that Mr. Badamosi Kabir, a member of the House of Representatives and a son-in-law to the late Nigerian ruler, Umaru Yar'adua, is in a coma in a London hospital. Mr. Kabir reportedly fell down in the bathroom of a London hotel, but was not discovered for a day and a half, according to a source close to him. He slipped into a diabetic coma and is currently listed in serious condition in a London hospital. Mr. Kabir, who is married to Maryam, Yar'adua's oldest daughter, has since 2007 occupied the seat for Katsina Central in the House of Representatives. A source told Saharareporters that Mr. Kabir's condition is compounded by his use of hard drugs. Already, former “First Lady” Turai Yar'adua has moved to London to be with her son-in-law. Turai is staying in a multi-million dollar mansion. Mr. Kabir’s political career has been dogged by questions about his educational certificates. After the electoral commission declared him winner of the federal legislative seat, his opponents filed petition alleging that there were inconsistencies in his academic qualifications. Although Mr. Kabir claims a master ’s degree in Business Administration, his opponents ’ petitions accused him of submitting forged and fake primary school certificate and NCE statement of results to INEC. |
ADO-EKITI —At least, five people lost their lives at Ido Ekiti, headquarters Ido Osi Local Government area of Ekiti State, Monday, when a tanker conveying fuel hit a ditch, while a residential house belonging to a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and state Coordinator of the Goodluck/Sambo Campaign Organisation, Chaief Femi Akinyemi was completely razed down. The fuel tanker was said to be on its way to Abuja from Apapa, Lagos, when it lost control at Ido-Ekiti, killing four people who were on a motorbike popularly called Okada. The resultant inferno razed down Chief Akinyemi ’s house Vanguard gathered that no life was lost in the house of Chief Akinyemi , as he was said to have relocated to his Usi Ekiti country home three days ago to celebrate the New Year with members of his family. The tanker was said to have burst into flames shortly when it hit the ditch, while the house of the PDP chieftain which was at a very short distance was burnt beyond recognition. The driver of tanker and one other person that were also injured in the accident are now receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Ido-Ekiti. Some of the early callers at the scene of the incident was the immediate past former governor of the state, Engr Segun Oni who had to rush to the scene from his Ifaki-Ekiti country home when he was informed. Look at the number of people that are dead here now and see how a whole building has been razed down by an accident that could have been avoided if the driver had been careful enough. Just last Friday, the Secretary to the Government of Benue State, Dr. Audu Achigili was cut down in his prime by a motor accident while several Nigerians have been killed by agents of the devil that have been throwing bombs everywhere. It is my prayer that God in His infinite mercies will console those whose love ones have been lost to these avoidable incidents and that he will intervene in the affairs of this country because as it is now, we need divine intervention. ” Also speaking on the incident, Chief Akinyemi said he was short of words but can only thank God for sparing his life and that of members of his family. “What I have lost today cannot be quantified in terms of cash but I thank God that I am still alive because if myself and my family members were to be inside the house, we would have all perished in the inferno too. I also sympathise with the families of those who lost their lives and pray that God will give them the fortitude to bear the loss. |
