John Holter In 1955, John Holter became a dad, but it wasn’t the joyous occasion he’d looked forward to. His son Casey was suffering from hydrocephalus. This meant that his cerebrospinal fluid, which normally circulates around the brain and drains into the blood stream, was blocked from draining. Its buildup would cause brain damage and eventual death. There was no known, effective treatment. At first, Casey was kept alive with a twice-a-day procedure: A needle was inserted into the soft spot on his head and a syringe pulled out the excess liquid circulating around his brain. When Casey grew older, a “shunt” was implanted under his scalp to remove excess cerebrospinal fluid. Unfortunately, this shunt had problems, because its valve often failed. John wasn’t a doctor or even a college graduate. He was a machinist, or “knuckle-knicker,” as he called himself. But, determined to save his son’s life, John invented a prototype superior to anything medical science had ever seen—even though it was only a flexible tube that, on each end, featured an attached rubber condom with a slit in the top. The genius of the device was that those slits in the condoms worked like the nipples on baby bottles. When pressure built up from too much fluid around the brain, the slit opened so the cerebrospinal fluid could drain into the bloodstream. Once the pressure had been relieved, the slit closed, so blood and contaminants didn’t flow back into the fluid around the brain. Casey’s neurosurgeon approved the valve design, but John needed a material that could safely be used inside the body. He found a “new” material called silicon and rushed to produce his device in time to save his son. Unfortunately, only days before the invention was ready, Casey needed an operation, and the inferior shunt was implanted. The operation caused brain damage, and Casey died of a seizure a few years later. Meanwhile, another child who was implanted with John’s device recovered. Candido Jacuzzi Candido Jacuzzi was the youngest of seven inventive brothers whose family left a small town in Italy for Berkeley, California in the early 1900s. By the 1930s, the brothers were the owners of Jacuzzi Brothers, Inc., which designed submersible pumps for agriculture. It was Candido who made “Jacuzzi” a household word after a devastating illness struck his son. In the winter of 1942–43, Ken Jacuzzi wasn’t quite two years old; he caught a fever that eventually left him crippled “from neck to knees” with systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Candido sold off property so that he could afford to spend more time at home with Ken. He paid for physical therapists and all kinds of cures—everything from goat’s milk to gold injections—though nothing seemed to work. But Candido found a real chance to make a difference for Ken when doctors discovered that hydrotherapy helped relieve the child’s pain. The nearest hospital with a hydrotherapy unit was a long drive away, and Ken found the trip exhausting. So Candido went to work redesigning a sump pump that pulled water out of basements to create a water jet. Then he added an air inlet mixing the water and air that shot from the jet. The resulting pump created a whirlpool in the family bathtub, so Ken could have frequent hydrotherapy at home to relieve his pain. Doctors were pleased at how well the boy’s blood was circulating. It kept his limbs from atrophying. Dad was glad he was finally helping Ken. At the request of a doctor, Candido patented his invention and sold it for medical use. In 1966, he invented a tub with a built-in pump and was issued a patent for the first version of the Jacuzzi “hot tub.” Eventually known simply as “Jacuzzis,” these outdoor whirlpools became popular throughout the world for recreation, and for giving their owners a “celebrity lifestyle,” a term that referred to Hollywood sexcapades. This will probably not surprise many, but it looks like Microsoft is seriously planning on 'sunsetting' the Nokia brand. The software giant has so far continued to use the Nokia name for phones, most recently with the Lumia 830 and Lumia 730 that were officially unveiled last week. However, a new rumor claims these two will be the last handsets to come with the Nokia brand on them. As the image above shows (which is purportedly part of a leaked internal document from Microsoft), starting with this year's "Holiday campaign" the Nokia brand will be gone from Microsoft Mobile's devices. The same won't happen with the Lumia brand, which will live on. Interestingly, back in July a Lumia 830 render was leaked sporting "Nokia by Microsoft" branding on the back, but the actual smartphone is just called Nokia. Perhaps this was to be a transition strategy that Microsoft subsequently dropped for whatever reason. So expect the next phones to come out of Microsoft Mobile to be called either just Lumia something, or Microsoft Lumia. In this case, though, there will be a more gradual transition, during which the "Phone" in Windows Phone will fade away - until eventually it won't be there anymore. So Microsoft's mobile OS will be called Windows, just like its desktop OS. Since the two still aren't the same thing, this could of course confuse many people. Microsoft is slowly integrating Windows Phone with desktop Windows (or so it's been saying for a few years now), so at some point the unified brand will make sense. Hopefully the timing will be right, as apparently there will be no "Windows Phone 9" release. It will exist, of course, but sans "Phone" in its name, as you might have guessed.

2: Bugatti Veyron Topspeed Key. Without this key, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport will only do a piffling 220mph. But if you put it in a slot behind the driver’s seat, it lowers the chassis, changes the angle of the rear spoiler, and closes the diffuser flaps, and allows the car to hit up to 268mph.

3: Aston Martin Jaeger LeCoultre key. OK, so it’s a big, shouty Jaeger LeCoultre watch, but if you press the face glass it’ll open up your Aston Martin DB9 or DBS. Pretty nifty. And considerably less appalling than AM’s massive “emotional control unit” keys, which look like a cheap corporate trophy handed out for the “zaniest tie” or “tea drinker” award at the office Christmas party. 5: Pagani Huayra Horacio clearly wanted everyone at the yacht club to be sure what you’d rocked up in, so shaped the Huayra’s key like the car it starts. And incorporated a flash drive for your tunes.

6: Koenigsegg CCXR key. It’s a massive sterling silver fob in the shape of the Swedish supercamaker’s logo, with a little rubber button on the back to enable the car’s alarm. A tad gauche, perhaps, and more than a little Indiana Jones. But Koenigseggs aren’t for shrinking violets.

7: 2004 Subaru STi key. Hey, it looks like a motorsport-style kill switch! And it’s made out of titanium! It’s also RARE – the key design only lasted for a year before being phased out for something less awesome.

8: VW PCP key. The yin to the Bug key’s yang, this was part of VW’s unfortunately named PCP endeavour (building a people’s car for China), and like the i8’s, features a high-def touchscreen. It can also track the status of your ‘dub via satellite. Shame it’s vapourware.

9: VW Beetle/Microbus key. As wonderfully simple as the cars it starts, the VW key also doubles as pleasing necklace when your Beetle/Microbus rots away to nothing.

10: Chrysler Neon Glow key. It couldn’t make up for the violent assault of rubbishness that was the Neon, but it had a key that GLOWED IN THE DARK. Which inevitably provided some comfort for bored owners waiting for the RAC to turn up.

It’ll tell you the car’s available range, how much charge is in the batteries, how much petrol’s in the tank, and allows you to pre-set the car’s temperature remotely. Which makes it cleverer than roughly 82 per cent of the Top Gear office. Thing is, while it’s extremely clever and extremely cool, it’s not the only demonstration of a carmaker’s excellence when it comes to putting together a nifty set of keys. 4 of 20 Envisioning the V-280 in action Bell unveiled the V-280 Valor design in April of this year. It was only just in September that it partnered with Lockheed. The tilt-rotor technology demonstrator is intended to have a breathtaking — for a rotary-winged aircraft — cruising speed of 280 knots (about twice that of current rotary-winged aircraft), with a combat range of 500 to 800 nautical miles. Whatever shape the FVL aircraft eventually takes, it’ll need to be capable of multiple missions, in part “because it can be scaled,” Maj. Gen. Anthony G. Crutchfield, then commander of the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, is quoted as saying in an Army News Service story from April 2012. “It may be a medium variant, something that is the size of maybe a Black Hawk or an Apache is today, that can do the attack mission, or the assault/lift mission. I see the same aircraft scaled smaller that will be able to do the reconnaissance mission, similar to what a Kiowa Warrior does today.” Besides being faster and capable of lifting heavier loads than today’s helicopters, the FVL aircraft would be expected to help the Army save money through better fuel economy and a common design that would allow components — engine, drive train, cockpit fixtures, and so on — to be swapped, even between aircraft of different sizes.

3 of 20 V-280 Valor concept Another participant in the FVL/JMR initiative, and another tag team, is that of Bell Helicopter and Lockheed Martin, with the V-280 Valor concept (pictured here). That’s right — it’s not a helicopter but rather a tilt-rotor design akin to that of the Bell-built V-22 Osprey, which has been in service for several years now. And that’s just fine by the Army’s FVL expectations, which are open to either type of rotary-winged aircraft. We should clarify that JMR TD is what the military calls a science and technology program — it’s the conceptual phase. Although it is a first step toward the Future Vertical Lift family of aircraft, JMR isn’t about building FVL prototypes specifically; it’s about sounding out “advanced technologies and efficient configurations” to help “mitigate risks” for the eventual FVL program, the Army said in its statement this week. “We must continue to push implementation of the FVL Strategic Plan which will positively impact Vertical Lift Aviation operations for the next 50-plus years,” William Lewis, director of the AMRDEC’s Aviation Development Directorate, said in that statement. “Absolutely, that is what JMR is all about. As we understand the demonstrated technologies and the opportunities for future technologies, that will feed the desired and reasonable capabilities and requirements for the potential FVL solutions.”
