In a statement published on Friday, officials urged Target Malaria, the initiative's principal NGO, to halt "all activities" in the nation

“All samples will be destroyed according to a strict protocol,” Samuel Pare, chief official at the higher education and research ministry, said in a Friday statement.

The move is part of a larger crackdown on foreign-backed NGOs functioning under the present junta.

The research, which began in Burkina Faso in 2019, released its first swarm of genetically modified male mosquitoes in the hamlet of Bana, a tiny settlement of around 1,000 people in the country's west.

These mosquitoes were developed to limit the reproductive rate of malaria-carrying female mosquitoes, with the long-term objective of reducing the transmission of the illness that kills hundreds of thousands of people each year in Africa.

Since its first release, the program has expanded its study to other locations, most recently unleashing new batches of mutated mosquitoes only days before the government's abrupt order to suspend operations.

As reported by Bloomberg, campaigns in Africa accuse Target Malaria researchers of worsening the spread.

The suspension reflects broader tensions between Burkina Faso’s military-led government and Western-backed NGOs.

Since seizing power in 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s administration has increasingly sought to limit foreign involvement in domestic policy, particularly projects tied to high-profile Western philanthropists such as Bill Gates.

Officials argue that Burkina Faso needs “locally developed, safer alternatives” rather than experimental technologies imposed from abroad. The suspension also aligns with the military government’s populist agenda, which often casts Western-funded initiatives as undermining sovereignty.

With Friday’s announcement, all activities linked to Target Malaria have been formally shut down in Burkina Faso. The research consortium says it will continue to cooperate with authorities but has reiterated that its work complied with national laws and international biosafety standards.

The decision marks a significant setback for genetic approaches to malaria eradication, raising broader questions about how far Africa is willing to embrace radical biotechnology in the fight against its deadliest disease.

For now, Burkina Faso has made its stance clear: Bill Gates’ vision of genetically engineered mosquitoes will not be taking flight on its soil.

African citizens are paying some of the highest fees in the world for international passports, even as activists and policymakers call for a more unified continental immigration strategy.

In many cases, these travel documents offer limited global mobility, with most countries outside Africa imposing additional restrictions or higher charges for acceptance.

Across Africa, passports remain costly and often out of reach. Fee increases sometimes reflect government policies that unintentionally or deliberately discourage travel.

Despite the growing importance of global mobility for trade, education, and work, many nations charge fees that consume months of income while offering limited visa-free access.

According to the Henley Passport Index (Q3 2025) and recent government updates, Nigeria will be ranked alongside other nations with high passport costs, including Cameroon ($181), DR Congo ($178), and Zimbabwe ($170).

The fees pose a significant burden, especially considering the stark contrast with monthly minimum wages, which range from $46 in Nigeria to $90 in DR Congo, underscoring a notable affordability gap.

Several African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Kenya, have recently revised their passport fees to account for administrative and production costs.

While these updates aim to standardise fees and improve service delivery, they remain high relative to average earnings.

In Nigeria, the Immigration Service announced that effective September 1, 2025, citizens will pay ₦100,000 ($65) for a 32-page passport, ₦150,000 ($97) for a 64-page passport, and ₦200,000 ($130) for diplomatic passports, even as nearly half of Nigerians earn less than $31 per month, making international travel a costly undertaking.

In Ghana, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, recently announced a reduction in the cost of ordinary passport booklets from GH₵500 to GH₵350, easing the financial burden on citizens.

In Zimbabwe, the standard passport fee rose from $120 to $150, while in Kenya, the cost of a standard passport increased from Sh4,500 to Sh7,500, reflecting broader government adjustments.

By contrast, countries such as South Africa, Mauritius, and Seychelles combine moderate passport fees with higher minimum wages and broader visa-free access, granting citizens comparatively greater mobility. South Africa’s passport allows entry to 103 destinations, Mauritius to 149, and Seychelles to 156.

The police command in Anambra has detained a young man and his girlfriend for allegedly staging her kidnap in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s public relations officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Awka.

According to him, the suspects, aged 23 and 24, were arrested after intelligence-led operations revealed that the supposed victim conspired with her boyfriend to stage her own abduction.

“The operatives also recovered N1.2 million being part of the ransom earlier paid by the girl’s family members,” he said.

According to Mr Ikenga, further information reveals that the suspects demanded N15 million ransom, and after negotiation, N3 million was transferred into the victim’s account.

He said that the operation was carried out by police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.

The command’s spokesman quoted the Commissioner of Police (CP) in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, as expressing deep concern over the rising cases of moral decadence in the society.

According to Mr Orutugu, the incident reflects the rising moral decay in society, where young people increasingly resort to criminality for selfish gains.

He urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to intensify efforts in inculcating discipline, integrity, and sound values in their children and wards.

The CP also warned youths against engaging in self-destructive ventures, stressing that the long arm of the law would always catch up with criminals, no matter how cleverly disguised their schemes might be.
