A Nigerian man, Daniel Chima Inweregbu, has pleaded guilty to fraud charges brought against him by the United States government over his role in a romance scam that defrauded American citizens of more than $405,000.

The 40-year-old admitted to “conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, and using an assumed name to commit a mail fraud scheme,” according to a statement released by the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

The DOJ said Inweregbu and his co-conspirators ran “a lengthy romance scam targeting American citizens” between July 1, 2017, and December 16, 2018.

“Inweregbu and co-conspirators used online messaging platforms and email, to contact victims, introduce themselves, and appeal to victims’ longing for companionship,” the statement read.

“If the victim responded favorably, Inweregbu and his co-conspirators began to cultivate a romantic relationship that emotionally attached the victims to ‘Larry Pham’,” it added.

The US government said that once trust was established, the fraudsters posing as the fictitious “Larry Pham” persuaded victims to send money under false pretences.

“Once the relationship was established, the defendant and his co-conspirators, posing as Larry Pham, requested victims send them money under various scams and ruses to domestic bank accounts they opened and managed,” the DOJ said.

This is not Inweregbu’s first conviction for romance fraud. In December 2020, a federal high court in Lagos sentenced him to 18 months’ imprisonment with an option of a ₦300,000 fine for a similar offence. He was also ordered to pay $15,000 to the United States Consulate “being refund of part of the money he had unlawfully benefitted.”

The National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu, has suggested that President Bola Tinubu and his administration inherited an extremely bad government, particularly insecurity.

Comedian ‘Black Paddy’ says he was “terrified” after he was the victim of a shocking racist attack when two thugs manhandled him out of a bar in Co. Tyrone.

The shocking incident, part of which was filmed, happened last weekend when the Dublin man, who’s real name is Fabio-David, was in Carrickmore to promote a local Airbnb.

A video circulated on social media showing the famous influencer – who films his travels around Ireland – looking in a distressed state as he ran out of a pub.

Behind him was a group of men – one of who shouted “Get out, there’s too many c***s like you in this country” and followed up with “f**k off”

“I went to the first pub and they were very welcoming – there was good craic, we were ‘splitting the G’ (Guinness drinking game). I went to the second pub and had a great time there too. A guy walked in doing a raffle for the town’s GAA and took pictures and I gave him €20 towards the draw.

“After that I went to the third pub. When I walked into the pub I was like ‘what’s the story, what’s the craic’ and then two boys closed the door. I was like ‘what the f**k is going on’.

“They came down and they grabbed me and they were like ‘what the f**k are you doing here? Get the f**k out’ – I was terrified, it was really scary.

“They were literally pushing me, kicking me and shouting ‘get the f**k out’. Carrickmore was very welcoming but they were saying get the f**k out of the pub.

“They actually threw me out. At first I thought it was a joke, like a prank, because that’s the kind of thing I do, but I realised very quickly this was very serious.

“I had to walk fast because I thought they were going to hurt me. I thought it was a prank, but then the man was getting very heavy and serious and I thought I’d better run out of there before I got a black eye.

“The guys were holding me tight and saying get the f**k out of the pub. Afterwards, I was very scared and I’d been drinking, so I didn’t really know what was going on.”[/b]

The men who confronted him had nothing to do with the bar, and although the business has been widely identified locally on social media, we are not identifying it.

However, we did contact them and last night they issued a short statement to the Sunday World.

It stated: “The pub was not party to the incident and is therefore unable to comment on what happened. The pub strongly condemns and has a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of abuse and discrimination, including racial abuse.”

‘Black Paddy’ said it’s not the first time he’s experienced racist abuse on his travels, but revealed that the majority of locals in the Co. Tyrone town were welcoming.

“I was really shaken up, but what can I do. When I got kicked out, the guy who had invited me to Carrickmore said to me ‘you need to get the f**k out of here (Carrickmore) because those guys might not be really friendly to you after’.

“I rang my mate and told him to pick me up and drop me back to where I have a friend I could stay with.

“I was meant to stay in the Airbnb but I was afraid those guys might come back again. The night was ruined for me but the funny thing is, when I got kicked out of that bar I went straight to another bar on the far side of the road and they were so welcoming.

“I was there taking selfies with everyone, with the DJ, with all the people. When I got kicked out I had nowhere to go because I was out alone so I went straight to another bar to wait for my lift.

“It was such a different vibe, people taking pictures and dancing with me.”

‘Black Paddy’ says, as he was on his own, he wasn’t filming or wearing anything outrageous, like he sometimes does, and was just looking for a good night out.

“I wasn’t filming. I was alone, it was a day off for me. I had my lovely pink T-shirt, jeans, my black boots, my perfume – I was out for a good night.

“I dressed sharply, I wanted to have a good time, but this happened, it’s weird and I can’t explain it.

But he says he has come across this before sadly – revealing he has been called shocking racist names.

A couple of days ago in Dublin he was also racially abused.

“I was on O’Connell Street and someone stopped their car and shouted, ‘Black Paddy you black ni**er bastard’,” he says.

“I’ve come across this before – I nearly got chased out of Antrim recently but this won’t stop me from being a good person, it won’t stop me from shining my light and sharing my positive vibe with the world because I know the amount of good, loving Irish people that’s out there who are very welcoming.

“I was just smiling and the reason I just smile is because I think the only way I can fight it is to ignore it.

Another video which was shared online and taken in Carrickmore after his racist attack shows him having a more cordial interaction with another Carrickmore man dressed in a Tyrone GAA top.

In that video the pair chat about poteen and the woman taking the video asks Paddy what he thinks of Carrickmore.

He replies: “Carrickmore is the best place to be, it’s unreal – apart from being kicked out of a bar – I don’t know why, maybe it’s because I’m black but they kicked me the f**k out.”

His Tyrone mate tries to make him feel better by saying: “I get kicked out of bars in Carrickmore every day, but I go back in again.”

‘Black Paddy’, who grew up in Nigeria before moving to Ireland when he was 14, had enjoyed a successful trip to the Co. Tyrone town up until that point.

He posted a video of himself in the Main Street dancing with some kids and he also made videos of himself in other towns in Northern Ireland last week, including Dungannon, Donaghmore, Cullybackey and Kilrea.
