WOOD *Fill nail holes, joints and cracks with patching compound. *Sand smooth and remove all dust. *Prime the wood with a high-quality primer. *Easy-to-clean latex semi-gloss or gloss would be the best choice for the finished coat. NEW PLASTER WALLS *Walls must be clean and completely cured. *For textured or swirl types and soft porous plaster: -Treat with a solution of one pint household vinegar in one gallon of water. -Repeat treatment until the surface is hard. -Rinse with plain water -Let dry and apply the appropriate primer, such as Loxon primer. *Latex is an excellent topcoat choice because it's easy to work with. |

GET READY TO PAINT The key to making your paint job easier and the results better is preparing the surface you are painting. NEW DRYWALL * All drywall joints must be taped and filled before painting. * When joint cement and /or patching materials are thoroughly dry, sand smooth, wipe away dust, then prime. * Latex is your best choice here PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES * Remove loose paint and powdery substances. * Patch holes and cracks with sparkling or patching compound. Allow to dry, then sand smooth. * For the glossy or nonporous surface, lightly sand to a dull finish or use an abrasive cleaner. * Remove sanding dust or cleaner residue. |

HOW MUCH PAINT YOU NEED FOR YOUR PROJECT? 1. WALLS Determine the square footage by measuring the distance around your room in feet. Multiply that number by the height of the room. Measure all windows and doors using the same width x height calculation and subtract each from your wall total. 2. ANGLED WALLS For spaces with pitched roof or cathedral ceiling, measure how many feet the tallest point of peak rises above the standard wall height and multiply by 1/2 the width of that wall. Add this figure to the total you calculated in Step 1. 3. GALLONS OF PAINT Divide the total area by 350-400 (depending on your wall surface), which is the number of square feet that one gallon will cover. 4. PAINTING TRIM Multiply the number of doors by 21, the number of windows by 15, and add up the results. Divide by 350-400 to get gallons of trim paint you will need. 5. CEILING If you are painting the ceiling, multiply the room's length by width and divide by 350-400. |
