u say his father is dead, could it be dat he found out?knew his mother cheated on his father at some point or d oda?, thats one main cause of resentment and lack of respect a boy could have towards his mother, u can also try to get a bit closer to one of the siblings (now u are engaged dats very acceptable) and try to find out when this 'hatred/antagonism' started, and den with deep and intimate conversations about that same poeriod of his life, u can maybe figure out the issue and adress it.

i remember once, its like senior girls (i mean from SS2 to 3) have junior girls who are their official "plate washers", these girls pick up the dirty dishes from d seniors wash em and make sure they are on the table in time for d next meal, n d cycle starts again.
one unfortunate senior picked me to be hers, hmmmmmmm ok i took the plate after d first meal n washed it in time for the next and that was enough to lull her into d false sense of satisfaction. i picked it up after d next n it got broken when i tried to wash it, (honestly i didnt do it on purpose truth! )

for the next one to two weeks i bet she ate only 3 or 4 times, she tire for me eh! one excuse today or d oda, "no water in school to wash d plate" one minute," i came late to dinning n all d food gone" the next to "the plate got stolen "or "my bag is missing", thhis is after the two day straight missed meals before i had the nerve to tell her d plate was broken.
