He finally caves by not pardoning Snowden, Assange, and Kiriakou—which would have sent a strong message to the powerful elites in DC about its grim and dark politics.
The DC establishment wins once again. |

Foreign Affairs › Re: Germany's Merkel: Trump's Twitter Eviction 'problematic' by drediamond(m): 8:22pm On Jan 11, 2021 |
nextstep: You're right about we needing to understand our own history and not believe what we've been spoonfed. However, I need to respond to the comparisons you made between EndSars and this terrorist act.
There's a BIG difference between the people petitioning their government via protest, and the people invading the seat of government. There's a BIG difference between organizing a peaceful protest against maltreatment by government officials, and a President actively encouraging an insurrection to harm the country and its officials. Please don't conflate the two.
As we all know, EndSARS was remarkably peaceful for weeks, inspite of its size. It turned violent towards the end when some elements decided to become lawless, and when the Army decided to start shooting innocent people. The fundamental approach of these protest were peaceful, with a positive goal (end brutality). I'm focusing on the goal (and not on the unfortunate turn of events). Even with the violence, so many people remained peaceful, and social media was filled with messages and skits to not loot, to be peaceful, to stay focused on the message. There were many, but the ones by Mr. Macaroni and Brother Shaggi immediately come to mind. I wouldn't have have made sense for twitter and youtube to ban these messages. We also see parallels with the Black Lives Matter protests in the US.
On the other hand, the US President incited an insurrection whose end goal was instability and an unprecedented aim of disenfranchising millions of voters by Unconstitutional means. What makes this particularly dangerous is this was done by someone with remarkable sway over his followers, someone who swore to protect the Union and its Constitution. Nowhere before, during, nor immediately after the armed insurrection was there call for peace (I'm assuming the President's cabinet threatened his removal if he didn't). Can you imagine if an enemy of America casually joined the insurrection with a suicide vest or two? This was quite dangerous and allowing the instigator to keep fanning the flames would be unwise, despite that he is the US president.
Furthermore, freedom of speech refers only to the fact that a government will not restrict the speech of its citizens. It does not apply to private entities - for instance, a restaurant can kick out a patron who was "exercising their right to freedom of speech" by abusing the staff, and the courts will side with the restaurant. Users agree to a platform's terms and conditions, and are liable to get kicked off when they violate the agreement they signed on to.
It also is a good thing that America is the kind of country where even the President can be banned or censured by private entities should they prove dangerous - that's the point of the various checks and balances that have kept this Republic alive for over 243 years without descending into a dictatorship. We should celebrate this ban. I have been following this Trump Saga and his rather volatile administration, but hesitate to infer an opinion due to some members here that resort to insults, but I think I would like to reply to your submission because you seem cool-headed and you somewhat argue in good faith. And to be clear, Trump truly encouraged his supporters to march in DC in protest to stop the steal and take back their country, but he never said they should attack the capitol in rage or to be violent. Because some useless idiots did otherwise did not mean Trump incite insurrection. If we are to go by these standards then every person who advocates a protest in the US will be held accountable if it was hijacked by rioters. Remember the " mostly peaceful" protest of last year asserted by the media, which leads to over 1 to 2billion dollars in damages(the highest in over three decades), and many minority businesses were looted and destroyed, including cities burnt, Minneapolis comes to mind. And by the way, many protests of this nature, to vent about election certification has been going on through previous administrations and it's nothing new. The excuse for violent protests and rioters that lingers for months in America without strong condemnation led to what we are seeing in the capitol. Without excusing Trump, some of his actions and utterances prior to and subsequent events to the election are awful. And his refusal to come to terms with the reality of his loss is shameful. But, maybe you are new to US politics, these elections drama aren't new. Objecting to winning candidates or sowing discord to US presidential elections has been going on, especially among Dems. Do you know that Hillary when she was New York Senator among other Dem Congress members objected to Bush W when he's winning is being certified by Congress. Don't let me even start with Trump certification. Truly, Hillary conceded after her loss, but immediately after that, she continues to peddle the rather crazy idea that she lost because Russia helps Trump win and even write books on it. And of course, her minions and fellow Dems went the extra mile to asserts that Russia hacks the voting systems to ensure Trump win. These absurd crazies linger over Trump's presidency—They even called him a Russian asset and stooge. Have you watched the violent protests that erupt in DC during Trump's certification and his inauguration which were encouraged by Dems and cheer on in the media? So, do you called these actions by prominent Dems inciting violence because they encourage and speak positively of those protests and rioters? because their arguments was that they are literally stopping a Hitler-like person from assuming the White house. If yes, then why are they not censored by Twitter? These are the same Dems that failed to condemn a long eight-month protest last year that was mar with violence. During these rioting, more than 40 Federal buildings were vandalized, and a federal courthouse was almost burnt down, many police officers were killed and assaulted with police stations burnt down and a minimum of 25 Americans lost their lives. Where is the national outrage to these events? Even the present VP elect tweeted out in support of donations for arrested rioters to be freed, and some Dems urge more unrest on the streets. These rioters coordinated their violent acts on Twitter, but they are left alone because they are justified with the narrative of social justice. The blatant hypocrisy is what is continuing to leave America divided. And by the way, I am not a fan of this guy, but many Trump haters have not answered the most important question. What gives rise to Trumpism and the election of Trump to the white house? Calling 75million Trump voters white supremacists or any other name-calling will not solve the issue. And censoring these people will only lead to a reactionary tale that the US will not able to contend with. Furthermore, Trump did better in the last election with minorities than any republican president in modern history, He greatly increased his support among these demographic that even shocked the GOP consultants and Trump critics. So, using the racism card is somewhat laid back. What this should tell you that, they bought into Trump's message but not his person. Many of his voters will tell you, they don't like his personality, but they like his message and policies. This is what America should really take a look at not all the manufactured melodrama by media and Trump critics that surround his presidency. What are these policies that are so much popular among Americans? Trump's Twitter censorship is a great mistake that the US will later regret. Even Merkel and some other world leaders who do not like Trump can sense the danger from afar over this act. Giving social media that much power to silence the so-called most powerful man in the world and the leader of the free world is unprecedented. Let me tell you if you like to know, There are three forces in America that are far more powerful than the US president. They are; The mass media(they include print media, social media, news media, movies, music, internet, etc) Intelligent agencies, and the US military. POTUS does the bidding of these forces, you dare not go against them. They control the narrative and power that surrounds DC and beyond. They try to shape our world and control what we see, know, and many more. Many people do not realize how powerful they are and why the word deep state is a common saying among political pundits alike. And many wondered why politicians find it difficult to cut Military spending or go publicly against an intelligence outfit like the CIA, DIA, or NSA and always love to be on the positive side of the media. It will be said to be foolish for Trump to take them on and never suffer the consequences. Yes, Trump is greatly flawed and has his own issues, but never mince words, his undoing is trying to take down a system through which he came to office. There so much to say about this, but no much time. What I will say is, America almost destroyed their country through blind hatred for one man, and it shows how a powerful nation can be exploited. If the US can survive previous presidents that are very contentious, then America can surely pull through Trump. From the day he decided to run for office, I know it is not going to be a good ride if he wins. People need to not be led by emotions but logic and never allow the very forces they despise like media, politicians, and bureaucrats to turn them against each other. Trump's presidency and era is a complex one and an unfortunate ending it taints US politics and democracy. |

MadCow1: First of all, Let me say I am highly flattered by your compliments.. Thanks a lot! **Pressing my big head down before it bursts or I start to float**
**This response is going to be hard and long.... ** Here it goes;
Well to do?! **Dear Jesus, I claim it in Jesus Name...... Amen** Thanks for the hailing.. You don hail me pass hail Mary for just this one post..
Okay.. That said, this is not about being well to do or not. Unfortunately, the world isnt an Ideal place. Every service or product in the business world is divided along class & quality and the control factor for these are the PRICE. I will for the heck of it throw a couple of examples out there;
Airline:: You can Buy an Arik Ticket for 11,000 Naira that gets you cramped and uncomfortable seat close to the back (near the toilet) with one small shared armrest, a small over used toilet, a small plastic cup of water or cheapass juice and a thoughtlessly baked pastry... OR.. You can pay 45'k for bigger seats, wider armrest, a hostess at your beck and call, an reserved toilet, hot food served to you on a tray, as much drinks as you would like for the duration of the flight and a much more comfortable flight.
Now you would think that those who are flying Business class have it good, but it gets better.. For a little more money, you can get on a private chatter flight and enjoy Onboard entertainment (movies, music and news), sleeper seats, a full service bar, Attendants at your beck and call, faster check and check out, special treatment and exclusive pampering..
Even this can get a whole lot better.. Chatter a Custom G6 Jet..
Electronics:: You have a Samsung TV, I have a Samsung, the next guy has a Samsung, e.t.c.. Even though we have the same brand of devices, yours is the smart Tv, mine is the Super Smart TV, the Next guy has the Genius TV.. Whereas the other guy can off his TV from the office, watch his TV on his phone inside the toilet, watch 3D movies and all, ours cant.. But then, these are not even the pinnacle of Televisions.. I saw a Bang and Olufsen television in a friend’s house and was like WOW!!! The price of that TV?! #Foggerabout..
In phone technology, I just realized that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 sold by Samsung Niigeria in Nigeria and Africa is of a lesser quality than the variant sold in the U.S and U.K market in terms of some content. Example: The Note 3 sold by Samsung here is the N-900 version, which does not come with 4G and some other internal specs.. The N-9005 is whats sold in teh UK and is of a higher spec than the N-900.. Its unfair but if they sent you the N-9005 you would have to pay N-9005 money.
Infact, I could keep going.. Name one comodity/service in this life that does not have varying levels.. Almost NONE!! The reason is because the better it gets, the more money it costs the provider. In the U.K, matches are not shown live on cable TV because it discourages people from going to the stadium. For you to get a match live in the UK, you buy it like Pay-Per-View on your cable.
Its hypocritical of us to go after DSTV for the premium package price. Its called 'PREMIUM' for a reason. They have graded their services like the Hotels grade their rooms (from executive to standard), like Airlines grade their seats (First class - Business - Economy), Cars (Custom - Limited edition - full option regular - basic opition regular), Phones (Vertu - Porshe - Samsungs/iphones/Blackberries - Tecno - Sagem/talkabout) , Houses (from detached - semi-detached - face-me I face you), Generator (from Industrial - iPassMyNeighbour), Restaurants (from Southern Sun/Chinese restaurant - Mamput), Same way even water is graded from (Spring - Still - treated - 'pure-water') , Same way Food is graded from (Orishishi - 'Madam put 200 Naira rice with no stew or meat’).. .. Same product, different variants, different packages, varying prices..
Nothing is free in Freetown my friend.
I would love to drive in a full option brand New Range Sport Supercharged for the price of a Kia Picanto... (I hope you are laughing at this wish). Even amongst the Kia Picanto owners, their is still levels.. Its called 'OPTIONS'.. Do you want Manual or auto?! Do you want Cassette or CD or Aux or a combination of all?! Leather Seat or fabric?! 4 cyclinder or 6? Sunroof or none?! Tinted glass or transparent?! Alloy rims or Wheel cover? Normal dash or Nav screen? Sirius XM Satellite radio or FM/AM alone? Onboard Assistance or not? Power Windows or Manual? Chrome grill or plastic?
Every Commodity in life comes with options.. All these options come with a price..
You spoke about MTN.. Let me take you on that;
When MTN came into Nigeria, there were 3 Telecoms companies in Play then and all offering Mobile Telecoms services: MTN, ECONET and NITEL.. Before MTN and ECONET, the cost of getting a CDMA mobile phone on Nitel was reserved for the 'Well to do'. When Econet and MTN joined in, the system changed (not by telling Nitel to reduce their prices), but by the new companies offering better services than Nitel for way way less than Nitel.. Even at 35 thousand for a Sim (without Phone), it was still cheaper and better than NITELs cellphone. Naturally, even those who owned the Nitel migrated to MTN. Then amongst the 2 remaining competitors, MTN's sim was still pricier then because whilst ECONET was still in Lagos, MTN had reached Port Harcour and Warri faster. And remember that calling across networks were expensive then, so people naturally started buying more MTN than Econet..
Now one of the things that drove the price of services down was not necessarily competition alone, but also the cost of doing business reduced for most of them as they built their own exchanges and did no longer have to use Nitels overpriced and outdated equipments.. Thats when MTN built the Yellow Band project.
Now even amongst the Phone matter sef, options dey;
MTN trutalk MTN SmoothTalk MTN Smoothtalk Plus MTN Zone MTN free night call Post-paid Corporate.
etc.. All carry different content and the more the content, the higher the cost.. Same with Etisalat, same with Glo.. Even with the competition amongst themselves, they still will never give you 1gb data for 1 Naira, nor would Etisalat offer MTN's premium package for cheap.. Max you would see is for a few cents less than MTN.
I am not happy at the demise of HITV. It profits me nothing to see either company do better than the other or fail. I am a consumer and if the deal is better and well priced, I would migrate to that end.. HITV sadly didn’t get it right the first time.. Anybody coming into the market has DSTV to compete with. Unfortunately, they came late and unlike many Nigerian companies, DSTV is very forward thinking and innovative. They know they are the best and yet keep trying to outdo themselves. Maybe of a company had started with DSTV as far back as the 90's when they were not as big and as grounded, it would have been easier to break into the market.. But any company coming in now should not try to compete with DSTV but rather create their own market from scratch and stay out of DSTv's lane..
DSTV has earned their status as Kings of Cable TV in Africa.
So please forgive me if you see me supporting the DSTV business.. I am not coming from a 'well to do' perspective, I am coming from a purely business perspective and nothing else. It’s like Dangote trying to enter the cubed sugar game by getting the Federal government to force St. Louis to reduce their price.
If you use the 'Poverty Level' reason to push for the prices of DSTV to be reduced, then its only fair that we go after ALL SERVICES.. Car prices, Hotel Prices, Airline Tickets, e.t.c.. Sadly, the Science of Economics can never allow for that.
Thanks for reading this long epistle..
I have been following your objective and logical view to this topic,that's greatly commendable This just show how unrealistic our Reps can be.Dstv monopolly goes beyong pricing or sort..its so about the content.I am privilege to follow Dstv way back since 2000 and I can tell u that Multichoice has strategically monopolised content from foriegn stations and they own exclusive africa rights to majority foreign stations that matters and if you have to knw the legal battle between Dstv and Hitv before the could get some few free to air stations and sort like Nageo, nickooledeon,BBC WorldNews,BET and MTVbase Dstv were so smart that they went ahead to get exclusive signings with major movie distribution companies like Sony,Viacom,Universal and the rest.these acts make difficult for new start up companies to compete cos Multichoice already had not only south africa cable rights for for the whole of africa Majority of these stations like BBC which include entertainment,lifestyle and ceebies cartoon unit,Sky,travel,Nageo and its sisters stations and a lot of them already maintainn a special contract and relationship which multichoice has used to fend off competition. I agree that to maintain a quality cable business that multichoice has upheld is not cheap which must come at a great priceand that nigerian cable Tvs are not encouraging cos the quality is below par. So the monopoly here is not about the price at all but is my decentralizing rights which will make other cas compete and this feat might seems imposibble but its now left for nigerians cables Tvs to come up with the task and only if they can. |
