Politics / Five Things Senator Dino Melaye Neeeds To Do by driveiwe(m): 4:52am On Jul 22, 2016
Dear Senator Dino Melaye,
I hope all is well with you. I trust you had a safe trip back to Abuja after your ‘Show of Strength’ walk on Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. It seems your walk was not properly advertised in advance, otherwise you would have been very warmly received by Lagos boys. I am sure no harm would have come to you, it is only your pockets that would have suffered.
I am writing in connection with the very exciting week you have had, specifically on the floor of the Senate where you got into a serious altercation with a female colleague of yours, Senator Remi Tinubu. In light of this development, I will like to offer you some unsolicited advice, which I hope you will accept in good faith. I will like to suggest the following:

You have to apologise to all Nigerian women

According to media reports, the exchange between you and Senator Tinubu was a very heated one. It is claimed that you threatened to beat her, “f…k” her up and “impregnate” her. Oh dear! Considering the fact that it is not possible to impregnate a woman without intercourse (unless it is through IVF, but we know you were not thinking of that method) it means that you were actually threatening Tinubu with rape on the floor of the Senate. This is not only totally unacceptable, it is criminal. Two days later, you emerged with your own side of the story. You claimed she called you a “dog”. I know Tinubu is no slouch when it comes to verbal warfare, but she did not threaten you with castration. You could have called her names in response, and you would have been even. You did call her “Bonga fish” but apparently that was not enough, you had to go further, to show her that you are “the man”. Let us set aside “she said”, “he said” for a moment. Let us look at what you said. According to you, even if you were so inclined, you could not impregnate Mrs Tinubu because she had reached menopause! So now, menopause is a crime? An affliction? How is the gynaecological status of your colleague any of your business?

There have been calls for you to apologise to Senator Tinubu. I believe you need to do that. However, she is not the only person you need to apologise to. You have to apologise to all Nigerian women for such a vicious and obscene attack on a female colleague. By bringing threats of sexual assault and mockery of her menopausal status into play, you have offended millions of wives, mothers and daughters. The husbands, fathers and sons who are reticent about the women in their lives playing a role in politics will find themselves vindicated through these action of yours. What transpired on the floor of the Senate last week was not just a bad day at the office for the elected senators, it was a terrible thing for Nigerians, especially women. Dino, we will be expecting that unreserved apology.

You need to rebrand yourself.

Every political space should be broad enough to accommodate the brazen, the eccentric and the colourful. Politicians with your skills set who can do and say things others cannot, are necessary when unconventional strategies are required. I am not saying you are crying more than the bereaved, but if you take a look at your political leader, Dr Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, not even his many political foes would describe him as a thug or brute. It is therefore understandable that you feel the need to play the foil to your polished boss.

When people think of the name, Dino Melaye, in Nigerian politics today, the name is synonymous with negative controversy, brawling, sex scandals, reckless statements, allegations of domestic violence, distasteful flamboyance – an all-round bad boy image. You have all kinds of nicknames, ranging from “Shakiti Bobo, to Rofo Rofo Senator to Dino the Dinosaur.” Dino, are you sure you want these characterisations of you to become set in stone? Is this the brand you are comfortable with? We have many branding experts in Nigeria. I strongly suggest that you invest in them, perhaps, they can help project you as an articulate, charismatic leader and social justice advocate who speaks truth to power but is mindful of his age, status, words and audience. That is the brand that will take you to the next level. The brand you are stuck with now is one that brings diminishing returns.

You should re-position yourself as a positive male role model

Senator Dino, I am sure you will agree with me that our youths in Nigeria need positive role models. It is important for young people to be able to look up to both men and women for guidance, but it is even more powerful when young people can see themselves in role models of the same gender. We need our young men to have manners, and be polite, responsible citizens. We do not want to see our sons fighting over paternity scandals with their Baby Mamas, accused of beating their wives, or threatening their colleagues with sexual violence. The next time you feel like whacking one of your colleagues, please, remember that young people may model themselves after you.

Show us your own ‘local product’.

Remember when you took Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State to task for using scarce foreign exchange to marry and import a “foreign product”? We know you have had a couple of misadventures when it comes to matters of the heart. I wish you better luck in that department. You are entitled to privacy, however, you take an unseemly interest in the spouses of others. If they are not “foreign”, they are too “Bonga fish” for your liking or horror of horrors – menopausal! Senator, please show us your own local, curvy, far from menopausal product. And be sure to let us know when she hits menopause so that we can all help you inform her that she is no longer useful. At least, we know that Governor Oshiomhole did not waste his dollars on his own “import”!

You may not need the blessings of your elders, but you should avoid their curses

Regardless of where we stand on the ideological spectrum or the company we keep politically, our starting point is our humanity, and the imperatives that it comes with. We may not always see eye to eye with our elders. It is alright to disagree on matters of principle or strategy. It is not alright to dehumanise each other. Even if you cannot find it within yourself to respect Tinubu as a colleague, you can at least think about the fact that her husband, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is an elder statesman, a formidable leader well-respected within and beyond the country. We are brought up to respect our elders, and even when they upset us, we learn to rein in our tongues and tempers. We were also taught that one of the most coveted things in life is the blessing and prayers of elders. This means one of the worst things is the curses of an elder. The most garrulous soldier is not the bravest man in the garrison. A word is enough for the wise.

So, my Dear Brother, Dino, I hope you will do what is necessary and focus on your primary task of being a lawmaker in the Senate. Battles are commonplace in the political arena, and all kinds of weapons are deployed. The dignity of women should not be one of such weapons. I wish you all the best.

PS: Senator, we Nigerian women will forgive everything if you can deploy your unique skills in our defence when the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill is re-presented at the Senate. We need to see you in action – anyone who opposes the bill should incur your wrath. Spare no one! If you can do that, we will wipe the slate clean and your rebranding would be well on the way.

Crime / Ese Oruru:yunusa Finally Released From Prison. by driveiwe(m): 9:11pm On Jul 10, 2016
Mr. Yunusa Dahiru, alias Yellow, the young man accused of abducting 14-year-old Ese Oruru, from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, finally left custody after spending over four months in Okaka Prisons in the state capital.

It was learnt Yunusa was immediately taken to his state, Kano, in company with a team of his defence lawyers who usually flew into the state during court proceedings.

It was further learnt that contrary to speculation that no Bayelsa indigene was willing to stand surety for the suspect due to the ethnic and religious sentiments being whipped up, the person who eventually fulfilled the court conditions was from Bayelsa.

Yunusa’s team of lawyers had been battling to free him from prison since March but without success.

The development followed the stringent bail conditions handed down to the suspect by Justice Ajiya Nganjiwa of the Federal High Court, Yenagoa.
Justice Nganjiwa had set a N3m bail bond and two sureties in like sum, resident within the jurisdiction of the court as conditions for Yunusa’s release.

He had also ordered that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler, while the second person must be a civil servant on Grade Level 12 or above.

The bail conditions also stipulated that the two sureties must submit their three-year tax clearance receipts and that the defence counsel must sign an undertaking that the suspect must not jump bail.
But Justice Nganjiwa later relaxed the conditions after he was approached by Yunusa’s lawyers that they were unable to meet some of the bail conditions.

The court had reduced the bail conditions to a level nine civil servant and further granted the prayer of the defence lawyers to also allow any traditional ruler from any community in the country to stand as surety.

Recently, the court sessions to hear the case had been done in secret, after Justice Nganjiwa granted the prosecution team’s prayer that journalists and members of the public should not be allowed to witness Ese Oruru’s cross-examination.
But a source involved in the secret trial, when asked how Ese had been reacting on seeing Yunusa in the same chambers during sessions, said the minor had been very antagonistic.

Yunusa is currently facing a five-count charge of abduction, inducing by the use of deception and coercion, illicit intercourse, sexual exploitation and unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor.
Lead counsel for the Dahiru, Mr Kayode Olaosebikan, confirmed the release of his client, noting that “his people have taken him away.”
He added that the cross-examination of the girl (Ese) would continue in the next adjourned date.
Oruru was recently delivered of a baby girl and is still in the protective custody of the Bayelsa State Police Command, which is responsible for her upkeep in collaboration with the state government.
Her cross-examination by Yunusa’s lawyers will continue on September 13, 2016.

Politics / Avengers To Buhari, Why We Won't Allow The Export Of Crude Oil by driveiwe(m): 7:54pm On Jul 10, 2016
OWARRI- THE Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, weekend, said since President Muhammadu Buhari had decided to shun the demand for legitimate dialogue with militants and stakeholders on the Niger Delta question, it would continue to encumber all avenues by him to export crude oil from the region.

Avengers, in an exclusive interview with Vanguard, disclosed that the struggle has entered a new phase with Buhari’s disposition of winning the battle and losing the war.

It also denied the widespread belief that ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, recently nominated by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, as a member of its Aaron 2 Negotiating Team, was the sponsor of Avengers.

This came as another militant group, Niger Delta Revolutionary Crusaders, NDRC, declared that it was ready to fight government and the Saudi Arabia mercenaries it was allegedly engaging over the God-given resources of Ijaw people, while the Ijaw People Development Initiative, IPD, insisted that the way out was to conduct a referendum for the people to make their choice.

In a related development, a group, the Toru-Ebe State Creation Movement, said the quick fix to the ongoing bombings was for the federal government to create Toru-Ebe state for the Ijaw in the western flank of Niger Delta inhabiting Edo, Delta and Ondo states.

Crime / A Mother Of Seven Murdered While Preaching In Abuja Streets by driveiwe(m): 11:46pm On Jul 09, 2016
A 42 year-old mother of seven, Mrs. Eunice Elisha, was on Saturday morning murdered by unknown assailants while evangelizing around Gbazango-West area of Kubwa, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory.

Eunice, who was a Deaconess at the Divine Touch Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Old NEPA Road, Phase 4, Kubwa, was said to have been cut in the neck and also stabbed in the stomach.

It was learnt that her killers left her in the pool of her blood with her bible, megaphone and cellphone.
Her remains were discovered by residents who alerted policemen who came to evacuate her to the police station where her husband went to identify her.
Speaking to newsmen at their residence, Eunice’ husband, Mr. Olawale Elisha, who is also a pastor at RCCG, said his wife had gone out to preach in the neighbourhood at about 5am only for him to hear the report of her murder.
Olawale, who expressed shock over the death of his wife, looked pensive and dejected as he spoke.
He said, “My wife always goes out early in the morning for ‘Morning Cry’ (evangelism). There was a particular day she went out and she told me that there is a mosque at the back where they commented about what she said. So I just cautioned her.
“This morning (Saturday), she went around 5am and I was still in bed because we did vigil which she participated in for a while because of the ‘Morning Cry’ she planned to undertake. Two of my boys are footballers, so they went to the field to play. And when they came back, they told me that they heard some footballers saying that some hoodlums had butchered a woman who was preaching early this morning.
“So, when I heard this, we trekked down in the shorts I was putting on and we didn’t see anybody but we saw blood on the ground. I asked a policeman around and he said it is true but that they had taken her to Phase 4 Police Station.
“I went to the station with my children and when we got there, I saw the lifeless body of my wife at the back of the police van and from there, she was taken to the mortuary. The incident happened between 5am and 5:30am because she usually goes out 5am and comes back 6am.”

Elisha who said Eunice was born on July 23, 1974, said they got married in July, 2000.

“My wife was so committed to anything that is of God. She was a reckless giver to God’s work, she rarely missed any programme in church. We have seven children,” he stated.
According to him, his wife had no quarrel with anyone that could have warranted her murder, describing her as a martyr.

“I see her as a martyr and she died for Christ. And whether the people are caught or not, they should forgive them; my prayer is that if they can accept Christ, that will be a gain to Christ,” the bereaved cleric said.

A lawyer and friend of the Elishas, David Ude-Chukwu, described Eunice’ murder as hate crime brought about by religious insensitivity, noting that the constitution allows every Nigerian to practise his chosen religion.

A senior police officer at the Kubwa Divisional Police Station, confirmed the incident, but referred our corespondent to the Divisional Police Officer, who was not available in the office.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Manzah Anjuguri, could not be reached for comment as he did not respond to calls to his phone. He had yet to reply a text message as of the time of filing this report.

WHAT ATIKU AND SARAKI DON'T KNOW. BALEWA never struggled to be Prime Minister. BELLO was qualified but gave it to BALEWA...... SHAGARI never wanted to be President.......but he ruled! ABIOLA wanted it since 1983......he never got there even in 1993....We loved him but he did not get it..... OBJ never lobbied for or desperate to be President. Falae wanted to since 1992 but he never got it.....OBJ did. ODILI struggled and spent billions to get it....he never got it.....Yar'adua was not even physically strong enough yet he got it without spending his personal cash. ODILI got nothing! JONATHAN has neither the cash nor the finesse to be President but he got it. He defeated desperate IBB and ATIKU in the primaries and BUHARI in the general! BUHARI resigned to fate. He declared that he will not contest again. That is when GOD handpicked him and made him the President after HE had earlier watched him exhausting his personal energy and killing his desperation! The time when JONATHAN had no strength, he defeated mighty BUHARI....But when he had all the strength and money...he lost to a BUHARI who had given up! SARAKI...Your father used Yoruba name in the south and Fulani name in the North, yet he did not win.... This is for our reflection. Leading is not by hook or crook, but by destiny. God bless Nigeria.

Politics / EFCC To Probe Rivers State Government For Suspicious Withdrawals by driveiwe(m): 6:23pm On Jun 24, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) is going to probe the
Rivers State government over the
withdrawal of over N11b from the government’s
account that occurred between October 2015
and February 2016, according to a report
published by Punch Newspaper.

The anti-graft agency was directed by the
Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and
Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to conduct
the investigation.

The Director of Finance and Administration of the
Rivers State Government House, Kingsley Fubara,
allegedly withdrew the funds from the
government’s Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
account.

According to an EFCC source who spoke to
Punch Newspaper, roughly N5.1b was withdrawn
by Mr. Fubara in ten tranches between October
and December 2015. He withdrew another N6.1b
from the same account in eleven tranches
between January and February 2016.

The EFCC will also be investigating another
suspicious transaction in which N1.5b was
transferred from the government’s CBN account
to a Zenith Bank account belonging to one
Samuel Anya in late January 2016.

“We were also asked to investigate the
withdrawal of N1.5bn on or about January 27,
2016 by one Mr. Samuel Anya of 69B Forces
Avenue, old GRA, Port Harcourt, Rivers State,
from the State’s account with CBN through the
transfer of the money to his account
0248922015 with Zenith Bank,” an EFCC source
disclosed to Punch.

Rivers State Commissioner for Information and
Communications Austin Tam-George denied the
allegations made by the EFCC.

“It is clear that the EFCC is now a fully
integrated unit of the All Progressives Congress
with the sole mandate of hunting down
opposition politicians and critics of the federal
government,” he said.

“When will this embarrassing media roulette they
call anti-corruption come to an end?”

This development is the latest scandal to rock
the Rivers State government. It was revealed in
September 2015 that Governor Nyesom
Wike bribed Justice Mu’azu Pindiga , the
chairman of the Rivers State election tribunal. He
was subsequently removed from the case , but
ultimately the tribunal held up the results called
by the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) in favor of Mr. Wike.

At the time of publication, Mr. Wike had not
commented on the upcoming investigation into
his government.

SHOULD I BE DISAPPOINTED IN GOD, WHEN IT LOOKS AS THOUGH MY PRAYERS ARE NOT BEING ANSWERED?

Question – Joyce (Australia): Dear Pastor Chris, my sister was diagnosed with a hole in her heart. Both she and I prayed, and believed God for a miracle and we did everything we knew to do, but she died. I’m so disappointed with God. My faith is totally shaken, and I’m at my lowest point since she passed on. I’m not able to pray any more. Why did God not answer our prayers?

Answer: I wish you could see the heart of God at this moment! It will be painful for you that your sister died but two things she said which she should also consider, she said we did all we knew we could, she didn’t say we did everything we were supposed to do, according to the word of God. She did what she knew to do. There is always God’s Word for every situation, and we should also know that God is always ready to answer our prayers; the problem is always on the receiving hand.

She said why did God not answer her prayers, who said he did not answer? Very, very important, to Joyce and maybe several others who might be thinking like this. She says she and her sister prayed for her sister to be healed, and then her sister died and she says I’m so disappointed with God, my faith is totally shaken. She says we did everything we knew to do but she died. You did everything you knew to do, what if everything you need to do wasn’t enough, what if you don’t know enough, that’s why we teach the word of God, so people can know more in the Word of God, so that when the day of crisis comes, you will know what to do.

A lot of people just don’t know what to do when trouble strikes and when they are at that point in their life, they are trying to put a lot of things together, and that information just wasn’t there, and if you didn’t have the knowledge, you are going to have problems. I’m not sure you did what you knew, but what you knew of yourself was not enough. I will tell you why, first, from what you wrote, you didn’t believe because, you were disappointed at God, and this God never fails. How could you think that he failed? He never fails, and again, does death end? Do you realize one time somebody was sick, and his sister sent message to Jesus? Lazarus it was, the sister sent a message to Jesus and she said, hey, your friend was sick, and Jesus didn’t go. But Jesus said something to them, he said it wasn’t onto death. In other words, he is not going to die. So that was a word of faith that Jesus spoke.

The trouble was, the man died after Jesus said he wasn’t going to die.
Now you had an option to think Jesus was fake because the man died, Jesus said that he wasn’t going to die. So what are we going to do; oh! Jesus you lied. Jesus came there four days after Lazarus died. Lazarus was already buried and Jesus came and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said, “Master you want to go there? By this time, he stinks. Decomposition is set in, it’s four days.” Then Jesus said, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” And they followed him there, Jesus stood coming to the entrance of that cave, and he called that dead man by name, “Lazarus come out!“ The bible declares that he that was dead came forth, still bound with grave clothes, hopping, coming out, as soon as he showed up, Jesus said loose him and let him go.

I’m thinking about you Joyce, if you had the faith you thought you had, your faith shouldn’t have ended with death. Faith never ends with death. We give up too soon, a lot of times we give up, maybe the circumstances.

Jesus said, he asked a question, Luke18:8, “when the son of man comes shall he find faith in the earth?” Because a lot of things will be going on and sometimes you don’t even have the opportunity to minister to that one, sometimes when someone is pronounced dead, the authorities take the body away and you just can’t do more.

Because a lot of things have happened that work against your faith, does not mean it is about God, it’s what we allow. Think about it, it’s what we allow. Sometimes the family members don’t even let you do more. Jesus went to the grave, to where this man was buried four days.

How many people let you do more, once that person has been pronounced dead? You may have not been allowed to do more even if you had more things. So think about it, God didn’t disappoint you, God was waiting for you, and he gave you faith. He says cast out demons, heal the sick, he says raise the dead, he told you. So why do we give up? We give up because we couldn’t do it, we want God do it in our time. We think it’s based on God’s time, no, our time is important and it’s our faith that determines the time.

If your faith is weak then it will take a longer time. If your faith is small, it will take a longer time because the Bible says when the edge of a machete is blunt, you must apply more force. Something you should have cut with one swipe, when the faith is sharp, it goes and it cuts once. But when your faith is blunt, you try to cut two, three or four times because it’s blunt; that’s it. If it is working, once is enough but if it is not working you have to cut many times. So if your faith is working, a short time is enough, if it’s not working it takes a long time.
