(MUST READ: HOW I GOT CURED FROM HEPATITIS B)
I am from Imo state, I want to testify of how i got cured from hepatitis b, I got diagnosed of hepatitis b in 2013 I have visited several hospitals and herbalists but all to no avail, my world was gradually coming to an end until i saw a post in a health forum about a herbal spell caster from Ewu Edo state who casts herbal spells to cure all kind of deadly diseases including Hepatitis B, ALS, MND, Epilepsy, Leukemia, Asthma, Cancer, Ghonorhea etc, at first i doubted if it was real but decided to give it a try, when i contact this herbal spell caster via his email, he prepared a herbal spell portion and sent it to me via transport service, when i received this herbal spell portion, he gave me step by step instructions on how to use it, when i applied it as instructed, i was cured of this deadly disease within 3days, I am now fee from Hepatitis B. All thanks to Dr Aziza. Contact this great herbal spell caster via his email azizahealingtemple@gmail.com for cure to any kind of diseases. Goodluck

sorry to say,its ignorance to say one herbal spell will just cure so many diseases;things dont work that way.If you must know, hepatitis B can be acute or chronic and the acute cases may clear on their own without therapy.on the other hand if it does not clear, after about 6 months ,it becomes chronic hepatitis,So telling us your hepatitis B cleared is nothing spectacular, its just following the natural history of the disease.what baffles me is when we begin to attribute success to some herbal stuff, when in actual fact such success can happen on their own without any form of therapy.this is an age of info tech;evidence based medicine and information flying around all over;yet you want to bamboozle us with a herbal spell curing all illness, all in the name of promoting it.

Health / Bulimia Nervosa by drken33(m): 8:07pm On Mar 03, 2015
Bulimia nervosa(otherwise known as bulimia) is a serious, potentially life threatening eating disorder characterized by recurrent and frequent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food ( binge-eating), and feeling a lack of control over the eating. The binge-eating is followed by a type of behavior that compensates for the binge, such as purging (e.g., self induced vomiting, excessive use of laxatives or diuretics), fasting and/or excessive exercise. Bulimia nervosa affects 1-2% of adolescent and young adult women. 80% of bulimia nervosa patients are females.
Usually, bulimic behavior is done secretly, because it is often accompanied by feelings of disgust or shame. Similar to anorexia, people with bulimia often have coexisting psychological illnesses, such as depression, anxiety and/or substance abuse problems. Risk of death from suicide or medical complications is markedly increased for eating disorders. When struggling with bulimia, life is a constant battle between the desires to lose weight or stay thin and the overwhelming compulsion to binge eat.
People with bulimia, are probably preoccupied with their weight and body shape, and may judge themselves severely and harshly for self-perceived flaws. Because it's related to self-image and not just about food bulimia can be difficult to overcome.
TYPES OF BULIMIA
• Purging bulimia –Here there’s regularly self-induced vomiting or misuse laxatives, diuretics or enemas after bingeing.
• Non-purging bulimia – Here other methods to get rid of calories and prevent weight gain, such as fasting, strict dieting or excessive exercise.
SYMPTOMS
Bulimia signs and symptoms may include:
• Preoccupation with body shape and weight
• Fear of gaining weight
• Preoccupation with food
• A feeling of being out of control during the binge-eating episodes
• Eating until the point of discomfort or pain
• Frequent episodes of consuming very large amount of food followed by behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting.
• Compulsive exercise
• Abuse of laxatives, diuretics, diet pills
• Using dietary supplements or herbal products for weight loss
• Self-esteem overly related to body image.
• Swollen salivary glands(cheeks)
RED FLAGS /WARNING SIGNS
The chance for recovery increases the earlier bulimia nervosa is detected. Therefore, it is important to be aware of some of the warning signs of bulimia nervosa.
• Constantly worrying or complaining about being fat
• Having a distorted, excessively negative body image
• Repeatedly eating unusually large quantities of food in one sitting, especially high-fat or sweet foods
• Not wanting to eat in public or in front of others
• Evidence of purging behaviors, including frequent trips to the bathroom after meals, signs and/or smells of vomiting, presence of wrappers or packages of laxatives or diuretics.
• Calluses on the back of the hands and knuckles from self-induced vomiting.
• Exercising too much to burn off calories taken in
• Continued exercise despite injury
• Having damaged teeth and gums
• Discoloration of the teeth
• Withdrawal from usual friends and activities
• In general, behaviors and attitudes indicating that weight loss, dieting, and control of food are becoming primary concerns.
CAUSES
The exact cause of bulimia is unknown. There are many possible factors that could play a role in the development of eating disorders - biology, emotional health, societal expectations and other factors increase your risk

RISK FACTORS
Factors that increase the risk of bulimia include:
• Female sex - Girls and women are more likely to have bulimia than boys and men are.
• Age - Bulimia often begins in the late teens or early adulthood.
• Genetics - People with first-degree relatives (siblings or parents) with an eating disorder may be more likely to develop an eating disorder,
• Biology – in addition to the genetic linkage, it’s also possible that a deficiency in the brain chemical serotonin may play a role.
• Social Factors - Peer pressure and media influence may fuel a desire to be thin, particularly among young women. Professionals who are in the public eye, such as actors, dancers and models, are at higher risk of eating disorders.
• Psychological and emotional issues - People with psychological and emotional problems may develop eating disorder. Examples include low self-esteem, impulsive behavior, anger management problems, perfectionism, depression, anxiety disorders or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
• Sports - Eating disorders are particularly common among athletes, such as
COMPLICATION
There are numerous serious and even life-threatening complications associated with bulimia. Possible complications include:
• Dehydration, which can lead to
• kidney failure
• Severe tooth decay and gum disease
• Absence of a period in females
• Electrolyte imbalances
• Heart problems - irregular heartbeat and heart failure
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Drug and alcohol abuse
• Digestive problems, and possibly a dependence on laxatives to have bowel movements

TREATMENTS AND DRUGS
People with bulimia, may need several types of treatment; however combining psychotherapy with antidepressants may be the most effective for overcoming the disorder. Treatment involves a team approach that includes the patient, family, doctors, dietician, psychotherapist/ mental health provider amongst others.
Medications
Antidepressants when used with psychotherapy may help reduce the symptoms of bulimia. Approved antidepressants include fluoxetine an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.)
Nutrition
Dietitians and other health care providers can design an eating plan to achieve a healthy weight, normal eating habits and good nutrition.
Psychotherapy
There's evidence that these types of psychotherapy help improve symptoms of bulimia:
• Cognitive behavioral therapy - identifies unhealthy, negative beliefs and behaviors and replaces them with healthy, positive ones.
• Dialectical behavior therapy – helps to learn behavioral skills to tolerate stress regulate your emotions and improve your relationships with others.
• Interpersonal psychotherapy - addresses difficulties in close relationships, helping to improve communication and problem-solving skills
• Family-based treatment - help parents intervene to stop their teenager's unhealthy eating behaviors; helps the teen regain control over his or her own eating, and helps the family deal with problems the bulimia can have on the teen's development and the family .

LIFESTYLE AND HOME REMEDIES
In addition to professional treatment, follow these self-care tips:
 Stick to the treatment plan. Don't skip therapy sessions
 Get the right nutrition. Talk to the doctor about appropriate vitamin and mineral supplements especially when not eating well.
 Learn about bulimia. Education about your condition can empower you and motivate you to stick to your treatment plan.
 Be cautious with exercise.
 Don't isolate yourself from caring family members and friends.
 Resist urges to weigh yourself or check yourself in the mirror frequently..
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE
Not extensively studied but may help to reduce symptoms-
 Massage and therapeutic touch
 Meditation,
 Yoga,
 Biofeedback
 Hypnosis
 Acupuncture
PREVENTION
There's no guaranteed way to prevent bulimia nervosa. If you notice a friend or family member with symptoms or warning signs of bulimia, consider talking to him or her about these issues.

Health / TOILET DISEASE/INFECTION-REAL OR IMAGINARY? by drken33(m): 11:23pm On Feb 25, 2015
’A lady walked up to her doctor, and complained l have vaginal discharge and it itches me; I guess I have toilet disease because I remember I used a public toilet 2 weeks ago and it was not looking so clean. What drug can I take?’’
This is usually a common scenario; the question we‘ll ask ourselves is how come males don’t usually complain of this so called toilet disease. Is it that males don’t go to the toilet?
The truth is there’s nothing like ‘toilet infection’ – it does not exist in the sense it is used.
There can be plenty of bugs lying in wait in public toilet; so many people consider the toilet seat to be number one public enemy- a playground for organisms responsible for sexually transmitted infection like Chlamydia or gonorrhea. Fear not, toilet seat is not a common vehicle for transmitting infections to humans. The possibility of contracting a disease from a toilet seat is theoretically possible but extremely unlikely.
Be that as it may one can be at risk of contracting infectious diseases (faeco-oral diseases) from dirty toilets not because of sitting on dirty toilet seats but from touching toilet surfaces with one’s hands which can subsequently be used to contaminate other products we may take in leading to infection. These surfaces could be the door knob on entering/exiting toilet or touching the tap attached to the sink or even the toilet seat itself.
Faeco-oral diseases are infections that one can contract from using the toilet without observing the basic personnel hygiene. Examples of faeco-oral infections are cholera; dysentery, poliomyelitis, hepatitis A, hepatitis E, rotavirus gastroenteritis, salmonelosis, and shigellosis etc. This affect both sexes equally.
‘’WOMEN HAVE A WRONG NOTION THAT WHEN THEY HAVE VAGINAL DISCHARGE OR ITCHING, IT IS TOILET DISEASE. THIS IS NOT TRUE’’.

This is a quote from the former president of the American Society for Microbiology, found on WebMD: “To my knowledge, “no one has ever acquired a sexually transmitted disease on the toilet seat—unless they were having sex on the toilet seat!”.
So, you do not have to worry about contracting sexually transmitted infections such as herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV through dirty toilet seats. These diseases are spread via unprotected skin to skin sexual contact. Most of the viruses or bacteria that cause them die very quickly outside the body so it is very unlikely that they can be transmitted through a dirty toilet seat. The same applies even to people who still use the traditional pit latrines, though may have increased risk of feco- oral diseases
‘The lady who attributes her vaginal discharge or itching as been acquired from the toilet, often forget that she is sexually active.’
Someone will now say, how come I have vaginal discharge and itching despite not been sexually active? There are other factors that may increase your risk of having a vaginal infection, including prolonged or inappropriate use of antibiotics, use of steroids e.g. prednisolone, douching, diabete mellitus, use of vaginal sprays and even cancers of the genital tract amongst others.
So dear friends let us stop putting blames on the toilet when we do have vaginal discharges. It has nothing to do with it. I hope this helps.

Health / Hepatitis B Awareness by drken33(m): 12:03am On Feb 21, 2015
Hepatitis B is a serious liver disease caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV).
One-third of the world population has been infected with HBV. 350 million people worldwide have chronic HBV infection. In Nigeria ,the prevalence is about 15-40% depending on the state involved.
The chronic form of the disease is said to be a silent killer (disease) because most people with chronic hepatitis B do not know that they have been infected.
1 in 4 people with chronic hepatitis B will die from liver cancer or liver failure.
Thus, effective education, screening, and vaccination are necessary to stop this silent hepatitis B epidemic.
It is said to be 100 times more infectious than HIV.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY
This is marked on July 28th yearly
This focuses the individual, community groups, clinicians and other supporters to run awareness raising events.

NOTE
HBV is one of the varied causes of hepatitis which include other hepatotrophic viruses (A, C, D, E), EBV, CMV, Drugs (isoniazide, aldomet etc), alcohol amongst others,

SYMPTOMS
HBV damages the liver causing scarring and fibrosis and can lead to liver cancer.
Disease caused by HBV
 Acute hepatitis
 Fulminant hepatitis
 Chronic hepatitis
 Liver cirrhosis
 Liver cancer

ACUTE HEPATITIS B (infection within 6 months)
May have no symptoms, or may have mild flu-like symptoms, including fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored bowel movements, muscle and joint pain, and jaundice (yellow color skin or eyes). Most people recover uneventfully.

CHRONIC HEPATITIS B (infection longer than 6 months)
Usually do not have any symptoms (hence a silent disease) for as long as 20 to 30 years. Chronic hepatitis B may cause liver damage, liver failure, liver cirrhosis (liver scarring), liver cancer, and death.
Most people with chronic hepatitis B were infected at birth or during early childhood.

CIRRHOSIS/LIVER CANCER
This presents with abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, Leg swelling, weight loss, jaundice, bleeding, confusion, coma etc
They are usually very ill.

TRANSMISSION
Hepatitis B can be spread via blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or other body fluid, such as by
 Birth- Mother to child
 Unprotected sex heterosexual/homosexual(MSM)
 Sharing/use of contaminated needles(piercing, tatooing, acupuncture), syringes, razors, toothbrushes
 Needle stick injuries in healthcare settings
 Unsafe blood transfusion /organ transplant
 Direct contact with the blood or open sores of an infected person
NOTE
Hepatitis B CANNOT be spread by sharing utensils, breastfeeding, hugging, kissing, holding hands, coughing, or sneezing.

WHO IS AT RISK
 Infants born to infected mothers
 People who have unprotected sex with infected people
 Men who have sex with men (MSM)
 Injection-drug users who share contaminated needle, syringes, or other drug equipments with infected people
 Healthcare workers who are exposed to blood on the job
 Hemodialysis patients
 People born in or who travel to countries with high rates of hepatitis B.Countries in Asia, Pacific Islands, and in southern Africa all have greater than 8% of population infected with chronic hepatitis B.
 People with HIV

LAB TEST
 Blood test to detect the virus
 Liver biopsy
 Abdominal USS amongst others.

TREATMENT

Acute hepatitis B,
There is no specific treatment available, but people should be resting, have adequate nutrition and fluids, and may need to be hospitalized. (Symptomatic treatment).

Chronic hepatitis B
There are approved medications, but not everyone with chronic hepatitis B needs treatment. See your doctor.
Transplant is also a treatment modality.
You should also take care of your liver by avoid drinking alcohol and taking other medications that can further damage the liver including herbal medications.

Abdominal ultrasound scans 6 monthly – to monitor the development of liver cancer

PREVENTION
 Vaccination(Hepatitis B vaccine)
This is the most important method. It is indicated in all infants, children, and adults in high risk group.
3-4 shots administered over a 6month period
Newborn - birth, 1-2 month and 6 month
Adult - 0, 1-2 month and 6 month
 Safe sex-condom/abstinence/be faithful
 Avoid sharing sharps needles, toothbrushes etc
 Avoid alcohol, medications(including herbal) that could further damage the liver
 Prevent perinatal transmission by vaccinating babies at birth
 Bandage /cover all cuts /open wound
 Screening of blood and blood products.
 Use of PPE by healthcare workers-facemask,handgloves etc
 Eat vegetables/fruits in addition to normal CHO/Protein diet

HEPATITIS AND PREGNANCY
70-90% of infants born to HBV positive mothers will be infected.90% of infected infant become chronically infected.
Baby shots for hepatitis B if mother has hepatitis B.
At birth - Hepatitis B vaccine + HBIG
1-2 months - Hepatitis B vaccine
6 months - Hepatitis B vaccine

What do the baby shots do?
These shots help babies’ bodies make antibodies, which protect them from hepatitis B.When an adult or baby has antibodies for hepatitis B, this helps fight off the virus.
A few months after your baby gets H-BIG(hepatitis B immune globulin) and all 3 shots of HBV vaccine, the doctor will do a simple blood test. The test tells you if your baby is making antibodies.

What if my baby does not get these shots?
 Up to 9 out of 10 babies born to infected mothers will end up being carriers for the rest of their lives, if they do not get the shots.
 Babies who end up as carriers have a 1 out of 4 chance of dying from liver problems
 19 out of 20 babies who get the shots will be protected for life!
Can I breast-feed my baby if I have hepatitis B?
YES! If your baby gets a shot called H-BIG(Hepatitis immune globulin) and a shot of hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of birth, it is okay for you to start breast-feeding your baby right away. Be sure to take good care of your nipple areas to prevent cracking and bleeding.
REASSURANCE
It is not a death sentence, people may live a normal life and die of old age or unrelated cause.

Health / Anorexia Nervosa by drken33(m): 5:20pm On Jan 29, 2015
Anorexia nervosa is a serious, potentially life-threatening eating disorder characterized by self-starvation (immoderate food restriction), inappropriate eating habits, obsession with having a thin figure and excessive weight loss (irrational fear of weight gain). It is often accompanied by a distorted body self-perception. Due to the fear of gaining weight, individuals with this disorder restrict the amount of food they consume or exercise excessively. People with anorexia nervosa, often equate thinness with self-worth. Anorexia nervosa, like other eating disorders, can take over an individual’s life; such persons may think about food all the time, spend hours agonizing over options in the grocery store and exercise to exhaustion.
Anorexia nervosa is nine (9) times more common in females than in males. It is one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses in young women. It typically appears in early to mid-adolescence. Between 5-20% of individuals struggling with anorexia nervosa will die. It has one of the highest death rates of any mental health condition.
TYPES OF ANOREXIA NERVOSA
There are two types of anorexia nervosa -
Restricting type - weight loss is achieved by restricting calories (following drastic diets, fasting, and exercising to excess). Purging type - weight loss is achieved by vomiting or using laxatives and diuretics.
SYMPTOMS
No matter how weight loss is achieved, anorexia nervosa has a number of physical, emotional and behavioral signs and symptoms.
Physical symptoms-
• Extreme weight loss
• Thin appearance
• Fatigue
• Insomnia
• Dizziness or fainting
• Constipation
• Dry skin
• Intolerance of cold
• Irregular heart rhythms
• Low blood pressure
• Dehydration
• Soft, downy hair covering the body
• Absence of menstruation
• Bluish discoloration of the fingers
• Hair that thins, breaks or falls out
• Swelling of arms or legs
• Osteoporosis
• Abnormal blood counts
Emotional and behavioral symptoms-
• Refusal to eat
• Denial of hunger
• Fear of gaining weight
• Social withdrawal
• Irritability
• Preoccupation with food
• Reduced interest in sex
• Lying about how much food has been eaten
• Excessive exercise
• Depressed mood
• Possible use of laxatives, diet aids or herbal products
• Flat mood (lack of emotion)
WARNING SIGNS/RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR
 Skipping meals
 Making excuses for not eating
 Eating only a few certain "safe" foods, usually those low in fat and calories
 Development of food rituals (e.g. eating foods in certain orders, excessive chewing, rearranging food on a plate).
 Cooking elaborate meals for others but refusing to eat
 Preoccupation with weight, food, calories, fat grams, and dieting.
 Refusal to eat certain foods, progressing to restrictions against whole categories of food
 Repeated weighing of themselves
 Frequent checking in the mirror for perceived flaws
 Complaining about being fat
 Not wanting to eat in public
 Excessive, rigid exercise regimen despite weather, fatigue, illness, or injury.
 Withdrawal from usual friends and activities.
 In general, behaviors and attitudes indicating that weight loss, dieting, and control of food are becoming primary concerns.
CAUSES
The exact cause of anorexia nervosa is unknown. Combinations of biological, psychological and environmental factors have been implicated.
• Psychological - Emotional characteristics may contribute to anorexia nervosa. Young women with obsessive-compulsive personality traits make it easier for them to stick to strict diets and forgo food despite being hungry. They may also have an extreme drive for perfectionism, which means they may never think they're thin enough
• Biological - There may be genetic changes that make some people more vulnerable to developing anorexia. However, this is not fully clear as no gene locus specifically has been identified. There's also some evidence that serotonin, one of the brain chemicals involved in depression may play a role in anorexia. .
• Environmental - Modern Western culture emphasizes thinness. Images of thin models and actors splashed all over the media may contribute. Peer pressure may help fuel the desire to be thin, particularly among young girls.
RISK FACTORS
Certain risk factors increase the risk of anorexia nervosa, including:
• Female sex - More common in girls and women. However, males have been increasingly developing eating disorders; this may be attributable to growing social pressures.
• Young age - More common among teenagers. Still, people of any age can develop this eating disorder, though it's rare in people older than 40.
• Genetics - Changes in certain genes may make people more susceptible to anorexia nervosa.
• Family history of eating disorders
• History of physical or sexual abuse
• Body dissatisfaction
• Strict dieting
• Low self-esteem
• Weight changes - People who lose weight on purpose or unintentionally usually receive positive comments from others and negative comments if weight is gained. Such changes and comments may trigger someone to start dieting to an extreme.
• Perfectionism
• Troubled family relationships
• Transitions - Be it a new school, home or job, a relationship breakup, or the death or illness of a loved one, change can bring emotional stress and increase the risk of anorexia nervosa.
• Sports, work and artistic activities- Actors athletes, and television personalities, dancers, and models are at higher risk of anorexia nervosa. Sports associated with anorexia nervosa include running, wrestling, figure skating and gymnastics.
• Media and society - The parade of skinny models and actors in the media is a contributory factor. These images may seem to equate thinness with success and popularity.

COMPLICATIONS
If a person with anorexia nervosa becomes severely malnourished, every organ in the body can be damaged, including the brain, heart and kidneys. Complications of anorexia include:
 Anemia
 Heart problems – mitral valve prolapse, abnormal heart rhythms and heart failure
 Bone loss, increasing risk of fractures later in life
 In females, absence of a period (amenorrhea)
 In males, decreased testosterone
 Gastrointestinal problems, such as constipation, bloating or nausea
 Electrolyte abnormalities, such as low blood potassium, sodium and chloride
 Kidney problems
 Neurological disorders- seizures, tremors
 Death
In addition to the physical effects, mental effects predominate –
 Depression
 Anxiety disorders
 Personality disorders
 Obsessive-compulsive disorders
TREATMENT
People with anorexia nervosa, may need several types of treatment. For those in immediate danger, they may need treatment in a hospital emergency room for issues such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, heart rhythm disturbance or psychiatric problems. A team approach to treatment is often best since anorexia nervosa involves both mind and body. The team may include medical doctors, psychologists, counselors, and dieticians. Family support and participation also makes a big difference in treatment success.
Treating anorexia nervosa involves –
• Restoring the person to a healthy weight
• Treating the psychological disorders related to the illness;
• Reducing or eliminating behaviors or thoughts that originally led to the disordered eating
Medical care
This involves frequent monitoring of vital signs, hydration level and electrolytes, as well as related physical conditions. In severe cases, they may initially require feeding through a tube that's placed in their nose and goes to the stomach (nasogastric tube). Outpatient treatment is an option when they are not in immediate medical danger.
Nutritional treatment for anorexia
A second component of anorexia nervosa treatment is nutritional counseling. A nutritionist or dietician will teach them about healthy eating and proper nutrition. The nutritionist will also helps in developing and following meal plans that include enough calories to reach or maintain a normal, healthy weight. The family will also likely be involved in helping to maintain healthy-eating habits.
Psychotherapy
Individual, family-based and group therapy may all be beneficial.
• Individual therapy - This helps to deal with behavior and thoughts that contribute to anorexia. Also it assists the person to attain healthier self-esteem and learn positive ways to cope with distress and other strong feelings. A type of talk therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is commonly used. Counseling is crucial to treatment of anorexia nervosa.
• Family-based therapy -It begins with the assumption that the person with the eating disorder is no longer capable of making sound decisions regarding his or her health. The family is involved in making sure that healthy-eating patterns are followed. It can help to resolve family conflicts and muster support from concerned family members.
• Group therapy - This therapy gives a way to connect to others facing eating disorders. Informal support groups may sometimes be helpful.
Medications
There are no medications specifically designed to treat anorexia. However, antidepressants or other psychiatric medications can help treat other mental disorders they may also have, such as depression or anxiety.
Lifestyle and home remedies
In addition to professional treatment follow these steps:
• Stick to the treatment plan - Don't skip therapy sessions and try not to stray from meal plans, even if they make you uncomfortable.
• Talk to your doctor about appropriate vitamin and mineral supplements especially if you're not eating well.
• Don't isolate yourself from caring family members and friends
• Resist urges to weigh yourself or check yourself in the mirror frequently. These may fuel your drive to maintain unhealthy habits.

Alternative medicine
This is not well studied as a treatment for people with eating disorders; however they can help reduce anxiety and increasing a sense of well-being and promoting relaxation. Examples include -
 Acupuncture
 Massage
 Yoga
 Meditation
PREVENTION
There's no guaranteed way to prevent anorexia nervosa or other eating disorders. If you notice a friend or family member with low self-esteem, severe dieting habits and dissatisfaction with appearance, consider talking to him or her about these issues.

Health / PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE (PID) by drken33(m): 11:46pm On Jan 23, 2015
‘Untreated sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a serious condition, in women. 1 in 8 women with a history of PID experience difficulties getting pregnant. You can prevent PID if you know how to protect yourself’. (CDC FACT SHEET)

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of a female’s reproductive organs. It is a complication often caused by some STDs, like Chlamydia and gonorrhea. Other infections that are not sexually transmitted can also cause PID
It usually occurs when sexually transmitted bacteria spread from your vagina to your uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries.

CAUSE
Pelvic inflammatory disease can be caused by a number of bacteria commonly gonorrhea or Chlamydia infections. These bacteria are usually acquired during unprotected sex.
Less commonly, bacteria may enter your reproductive tract anytime the normal barrier created by the cervix is disturbed. This may happen after intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) insertion, childbirth, miscarriage or abortion.

HOW DO I GET PID? (RISK FACTORS)
The following factors may increase your risk of pelvic inflammatory disease;
• Being a sexually active woman younger than 25 years old
• Having multiple sexual partners
• Having sex without a condom
• Having had an IUCD inserted recently
• Previous history of Pelvic inflammatory disease or sexually transmitted infection.
• Being in a sexual relationship with a person who has more than one sex partner
• Douching regularly

SYMPTOMS
You may not realize you have a PID because your symptoms may be mild, or you may not experience any symptoms. However, if you do have symptoms, you may notice;
• Lower abdominal pain
• Unusual discharge with a bad odor from your vagina;
• Pain and/or bleeding when you have sex;
• Burning sensation when you urinate; or
• Bleeding between periods.
• Fever
• Nausea /vomiting
Promptly see your doctor if you notice these symptoms and be examined accordingly. Necessary test will be conducted by your doctor.
Pelvic inflammatory disease is often difficult to identify because the symptoms seem like those of other conditions, such as appendicitis, urinary tract infections, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis.

COMPLICATIONS
If PID is not treated, it can cause serious problems, such as
• Infertility
Formation of scar tissue both outside and inside the fallopian tubes that can lead to tubal blockage; this could lead to inability of the female to get pregnant.
• Ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the womb);
• Long-term pelvic/abdominal pain
The more times a woman has PID, the greater are her chances of becoming infertile.

TREATMENT
Ensure you present to a doctor early; the longer you wait to get treated, the more likely it is that you will have complications from PID.It is important to note that damage done by PID may be irreversible if treatment is delayed
See your doctor who will make proper diagnosis and place you on recommended antibiotics and possibly analgesic for pain.
During this period you need bed rest and abstain from sex
In more developed cases of PID, surgery may be needed to repair or remove reproductive organs.
During the course of treatment:
• Take all of the prescribed medicine.
• Ensure you take complete treatment even after symptoms have subsided.
• Drink lots of fluids, and eat a healthy diet.
• Do not douche or use tampons.
• Ensure your partner gets tested and treated even if he has no symptoms.
• Do not have sex until you and your partner(s) have finished all the medicine, have been examined, and know that treatment is complete.

PREVENTION
The only way to avoid STDs is to not have vaginal, anal, or MouthAction.
If you are sexually active, you can do the following things to lower your chances of getting PID:
• Being in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and has negative STD test results;
• Practice safer sex.
Since PID can be sexually transmitted, using a latex or female condom can reduce the risk of PID.
• Don't douche.
Douching upsets the balance of bacteria in your vagina.
It can spread infections from the vagina into the uterus and fallopian tubes, increasing the risk of PID.
• If you think you may have been exposed to Chlamydia or gonorrhea, get tested.
Most women with these sexually transmitted infections have no symptoms and may develop PID without knowing it.
• Wipe from front to back after urinating or having a bowel movement to avoid introducing bacteria from your colon into the vagina.
• Ensure your partner get tested and treated.

Birth Control and PID
The birth control pills offer some protection against pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). They thicken mucus in the cervix and prevent other infections from reaching the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. They do not protect against sexually transmitted infections of the cervix and vagina.

Health / Acne Vulgaris (pimples) by drken33(m): 6:13pm On Dec 26, 2014
ACNE VULGARIS (PIMPLES)
Acne is a common chronic disorder affecting the hair follicle and sebaceous gland, in which there is blockage of the follicle (with oil and dead skin cells) and inflammation. There are several variants with the commonest been acne vulgaris.Vulgaris is the medical term for "common". It is given this name to distinguish it from less common forms of acne. You may call acne "pimples", "spots" or "zits".
Acne affects males and females of all races and ethnicities but males are more predisposed in developing severe acne. It is common in adolescents and young adults, with 85% of 16-18 year olds affected. However, it may occur in children and adults of all ages.
Acne usually appears on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. These are seborrheic areas with high amount of sebum. It is a cause of emotional distress, reduced self esteem and in extreme cases depression and suicide and causes scar on the skin. Acne can be persistent despite effective treatment. Early treatment is the key because it lowers the risk of physical and emotional damage.. Acne tends to improve after the age of 25 years but may persist, especially in females.
CAUSES
Acne is due to a combination of factors. The following factors predispose/aggravate acne.
1. Family history - Genetics plays a role in acne. If both parents had acne, you're likely to develop it, too.
2. Hormones - Androgens are hormones that increase in boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum, predisposing to acne. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy, menstruation, use of oral contraceptives, corticosteroid or lithium also can affect sebum production.
3. Drugs - Use of oral contraceptives, steroids, exogenous androgenic hormones, anticonvulsants, lithium, and others also affect sebum production and worsen acne.
4. Infections-priopionibacterium acne is the bacterium implicated in acne; though Staphylococcus aureus is discovered to play some role.
5. Diet - Dairy products and carbohydrate-rich foods may trigger acne. Chocolate has long been suspected of making acne worse. Some has associated roasted groundnut and beverage like coffee with acne.
6. Greasy or oily substances - Acne may develop in areas where the skin comes into contact with oily lotions and creams or with grease in a work area, such as a kitchen with fry vats.
7. Climate-excessive heat and humidity aggravates acne
8. Friction or pressure on your skin. This can be caused by items such as telephones, cell phones, helmets, tight collars and backpacks
9. Conditions like polycystic ovarian disease, Cushing’s disease and application of occlusive dressing can all worsen acne.

10. Other factors like stress, anxiety emotional tension and adversely affect the course of acne.

FEATURES
Acne is often confined to the face but it may involve neck, chest and back. It is characterized by:
• Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
• Blackheads (open plugged pores — the oil turns brown when it is exposed to air
• Small red, tender bumps (papules)
• Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips
• Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin (nodules)
• Painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin (cystic lesions)
TREATMENT
The drug the doctor recommends depends on the type and severity of the acne. It could be applied to the skin (topical medication) or taken by mouth (oral medication). It can take many months or years for acne to clear up completely.
TOPICAL MEDICATIONS
Benzoyl peroxide.
keratolytics (salicylic acid)
Retinoid - these are vitamin A derivative-tazarotene, tretinoin. It works by preventing plugging of the hair follicles.
Antibiotics - These work by killing excess skin bacteria and reducing redness e.g. clindamycin; erythromycin
Dapsone
ORAL MEDICATIONS
Antibiotics - For moderate to severe acne, you may need oral antibiotics to reduce bacteria and fight inflammation. Choices for treating acne include tetracyclines.
Combined oral contraceptives - useful in treating acne in women and adolescent girls.
Anti-androgen agent - spironolactone (Aldactone), cyproterone acetate may be considered for women and adolescent girls if oral antibiotics aren't helping.
Isotretinoin - reserved for people with the most severe acne. Serious potential side effects include ulcerative colitis, risk of depression and suicide, and severe birth defects.

Other Therapies include
• Phototherapy (Light therapy).
• Chemical peel - This procedure uses repeated applications of a chemical solution, such as salicylic acid. .
• Extraction of whiteheads and blackheads - Dermatologist uses special tools to gently remove whiteheads and blackheads that haven't cleared up with topical medications. This can lead to scarring.
• Steroid injection. Nodular and cystic lesions can be treated by injecting a steroid drug directly into them.
TREATING ACNE SCARS
Procedures used to diminish scars left by acne include :
• Soft tissue fillers.
• Chemical peels.
• Dermabrasion.
• Laser resurfacing.
• Light therapy.
• Skin surgery - grafting

LIFESTYLE AND HOME REMEDIES
• Wash problem areas with a gentle cleanser - Twice a day, use your hands to wash your face with a mild soap and warm water
• Use an oil-free moisturizer with sunscreen. For some people, the sun worsens acne.
• Avoid irritants - oily or greasy cosmetics, hairstyling products or acne concealers.
• Don't pick or squeeze blemishes.
• Try products to dry excess oil and promote peeling – products containing benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol or salicylic acid.
• Keep your hair clean and off your face.
• Also avoid resting your hands or objects, such as telephone receivers, on your face.
• Tight clothing or hats also can pose a problem, especially if you're sweating. Sweat and oils can contribute to acne.
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE
Some studies suggest that using the following supplements may help treat acne.
• Tea tree oil.
• Alpha hydroxyl acid.
• Azelaic acid.
• Bovine cartilage.
• Zinc. Zinc in lotions and creams may reduce acne breakouts.
• Green tea extract.
• Aloe vera gel.
• Brewer's yeast.
PREVENTION
• Wash acne-prone areas only twice a day. But too much washing can irritate the skin. Wash affected areas with a gentle cleanser and use oil-free, water-based skin care products.
• Use cream or gel to help dry excess oil - products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
• Avoid touching or picking at the problem areas. Doing so can trigger more acne.
• Shower after strenuous activities.
• Use non-oily makeup.
• Remove makeup before going to bed. Going to sleep with cosmetics on your skin can clog your pores.
• Wear loose fitting clothing.

Health / Re: HALITOSIS (BAD BREATH) by drken33(m): 11:59pm On Dec 24, 2014
Zaikon:
Bro diaris cure nd it has been cured my boss gat it too but cured via kedi product.

REALLY,LETS GET DETAILS AND READ THE FIRST LINE UNDER TREATMENT AGAIN AND I QUOTE ''There is no one treatment for halitosis. The treatment will depend on what is causing the problem. ''.ITS SIMPLE U HAVE TO HANDLE WAT THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM IS.
Health / HALITOSIS (BAD BREATH) by drken33(m): 10:47pm On Dec 24, 2014
Bad breath also known as halitosis is a breath with unpleasant odour of the mouth present on exhaled breath. It is caused by sulphur-producing bacteria that normally live on the surface of the tongue and in the throat. These bacteria break down proteins at a very high rate and release malodorous sulphur compounds from the back of the tongue and throat.
Halitosis is not infectious. About one in four people are thought to have bad breath (halitosis) on a regular basis.

Bad breath can be an embarrassing problem and in some cases may be a source of anxiety. It has caused otherwise well qualified people to lose employment opportunities, caused job losses, and friendships/marriages to crash. The saying that ‘only your best friend will tell you that your mouth smells, may not be totally true especially in Nigeria. The best they do is to avoid you completely.
It can be caused by the foods we eat, dry mouth, tobacco products, or a medical disorder. Maintaining proper oral health can help reduce or eliminate bad breath.

CAUSES
Food. The breakdown of food particles in and around your teeth can increase bacteria and cause a foul odor.
Also eating certain foods, such as onions, garlic, or cauliflower and other spices also can cause bad breath. However their effects are shortlived.
Poor dental hygiene. If you don't brush and floss daily, food particles remain in your mouth, causing bad breath. There could also be infection around the teeth (periodontitis). Dentures that are not cleaned regularly or don't fit properly can harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles.
Dry mouth (xerostomia). Saliva cleanses the mouth, removing particles that may cause bad odors. Xerostomia contributes to bad breath because production of saliva is decreased. Dry mouth occurs during sleep, leading to "morning breath," and is worsened if you sleep with your mouth open. It can be caused by medications, alcohol, stress or a medical condition like sjogrens syndrome.
Smoking. Smoking starves the mouth of oxygen and causes its own unpleasant mouth odor. Smokers and oral tobacco users are also more likely to have gum disease, another source of bad breath
Infections in your mouth. Bad breath can be caused by surgical wounds after oral surgery, such as tooth removal, or as a result of tooth decay, gum disease or mouth sores.
Other mouth, nose and throat conditions. Infections or chronic inflammation in the nose, sinuses or throat, which can contribute to postnasal drip, also can cause bad breath.
Medications. Some medications can indirectly produce bad breath by contributing to dry mouth. Others can be broken down in the body to release chemicals that can be carried on your breath.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease- reflux of acid and bile from the stomach can be associated with bad breath.
Psychiatric illness — some people may believe they have bad breath, but others do not notice it. This is referred to as "pseudohalitosis’’
Other causes. Respiratory tract infections, Kidney failure, liver disease, various carcinomas, metabolic dysfunctions, and biochemical disorders, together account for only a very small percentage of halitosis sufferers.
In young children it may be caused by a foreign body, such as a small toy or piece of food, lodged in a nostril.
SYMPTOMS
You may not always know that you have bad breath. That's because odor-detecting cells in the nose eventually get used to the smell. Other people may notice and react by stepping away from you as you speak, or making a face.
The features of halitosis can include:
• Dry mouth
• A white coating on the tongue especially at the back of the tongue
• Morning bad breath and a burning tongue
• Build up around teeth
• Post-nasal drip, or mucous
• Thick saliva and a constant need to clear your throat
• Sour, bitter metallic taste.
• Other symptoms are dependent on the specific cause.

Having halitosis can have a major impact on a person. Because of bad breath, other people may back away or turn their heads. This can cause a loss of confidence and self-esteem.
TREATMENT

There is no one treatment for halitosis. The treatment will depend on what is causing the problem.
• Avoiding dehydration and good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, are important.
• Use of mouthwashes, lozenges and toothpastes can assist in fighting halitosis.
• Gentle but effective tongue cleaning may also be required. The tongue should be brushed in a gentle manner, from the back towards the front of the tongue.
• People with chronic sinusitis may find the regular use of a saline nasal spray helpful. A course of an antibiotic, effective against anaerobic bacteria (such as metronidazole, to reduce the overgrowth of sulphur-producing bacteria), may also help.
• Your dentist might also recommend replacing faulty tooth restorations, which can be a breeding ground for bacteria.
The summary is that speak to your dentist/ doctor to identify the cause of your halitosis and to find the most effective treatment for you.
LIFESTYLE AND HOME REMEDIES
To reduce or prevent bad breath:
Brush your teeth after you eat. Toothpaste with antibacterial properties has been shown to reduce bad breath odors.
Floss at least once a day. Proper flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth, helping to control bad breath.
Brush your tongue. Can be done carefully using a toothbrush or a tongue scraper.
Clean your dentures or dental appliances.
Avoid dry mouth. To keep your mouth moist, avoid tobacco and drink plenty of water — not coffee, soft drinks or alcohol, which can lead to a drier mouth.
Chew gum or suck on candy — preferably sugarless — to stimulate saliva. For those with chronic dry mouth, your dentist or physician may prescribe an artificial saliva preparation or an oral medication that stimulates the flow of saliva.
Adjust your diet. Avoid food and beverages that can cause bad breath. Avoid sticky, sugary foods.
Regularly get a new toothbrush.
Regular dental checkups. See your dentist on a regular basis — generally once or twice a year — to have your teeth or dentures examined and cleaned.
More recently, two Nigerian teenagers discovered that the use of wall nut gums and mouthwash was of benefit to reduce bad breath. Guess we can say kudos to them.
Do you have a bad breath?
